The amount of protein you need depends on your weight, goals, and lifestyle. The daily minimum recommended by the National Institutes of Health is 0.36 grams per pound for a sedentary person. [1] However, if you do intense workouts or have a physically demanding job, you’ll need more. Why is it then, a gorilla, that is strictly a plant eater, can have a tremendous amount of muscle, or an elephant, or an elk, or deer?… I could go on. I like your videos, and if you want to eat meat that’s fine, but eating plant based is a perfectly fine way to get protein. To say it’s incomplete and won’t be effective for muscle building is nonsense. For anyone interested, look up vegan body building, you’ll be surprised.

For 15 days of following the plans, I lost TWELVE pounds There is certainly still need of workouts even only a couple of times weekly and also the food to have should be right. yeah, i tried the 1 gram of protein per pound of body weight thing a few years ago. i found it wasn’t sustainable in the long run. There wasn’t any great difference in that to the 0.7 grams to me. id say a better strategy is to get to the lower end and make sure all the other nutrients are being met to give the best chance of absorbing it properly.

I like your stuff, however hopefully you have updated your views on soy since making this video. Only foods that enter the body through estrogen receptor alpha raise estrogen, foods that enter through estrogen receptor beta do not raise estrogen. Soy enters through the beta receptor and will not raise estrogen levels.

Or am I just buying it cuz I see everyone drinks it?” I’ve lost 17 lbs in 2 months by just eating healthier and being active ( doing FitnessBlender video workouts). doesn’t a cup of broccoli have more protein in it than a pound of beef? I realllyyy think they should do more research on a vegan diet before they say that the only source of protein out there is meat….protein comes from plants…that’s where animals get it from…animals cannot just naturally create protein in their bodies, to supply us humans with it, why get second hand protein when you can go to the source…plants are the only living thing that can take nitrogen from the air and turn that into protein…if our bodies just naturally created protein on its own we’d be set. But we don’t. plants do though.

I took Shakeology I personally think it’s over rated. Eat a good balanced diet. My CPT said it was rubbish as it only contains 16g of protein!

Wow finally hearing the things I have always thought!!! We don’t need as much protein as we think and the protein you eat BEFORE a workout is already on its way to being absorbed and bio-available. Muscle repair takes time, so thinking that a protein shake needs to be consumed immediately after a workout is just not logical. Just get the right macros throughout the day and get a good sleep, thats when it matters.

I have been taking a protein supplement powder post-workout for quite a while after doing P90X for a little while. I didn’t buy their beachbody powder, but I suppose I got brainwashed into thinking that the supplement would be good post-workout. I somewhat like the taste of the protein supplement that I currently take, so I’m going to check what’s in it and if it’s still good no sweeteners I might significantly reduce the amount of protein that I’m taking and use it differently as a tasty reward. That’s so true what you guys said about carbs, they’re not bad at all if you take the good types of carbs and in moderation. If I don’t have carbs in the morning I feel like I don’t have enough energy to go through the day.

When I ate meat I took in 170 grams of protein per day. Since I went vegan I’m down to about 100 grams per day. I carry more muscle mass and less fat now than ever and my workouts are about the same. I don’t know why and don’t really care but I do think protein intake recommendations are blown up too high by the supplement/food industry to some degree.

Our body breaks proteins in amino acids….so why complete and incomplete protein matters?..because at the end of the day if u eat variety of foods like seeds, legumes,nuts, grains,and little bit animal product then I think it will be enough….bcoz finally protein will break down in individual aminos
The Incomplete Protein theory was started by someone unqualified (a Sociologist) NOT a Scientist & then took Decades to get it out of Basic Nutrition Courses.

my biggest issue is trying to find enough vegan protein that isn’t high carb like beans and quinoa are incredible it the protein content is too little for the amount of calories and carbs. i usually use tofu tempeh, hemp seeds (10g of protein @ 180 cals ☹️) and processed foods like beyond meat. pls halpppp!

Hi Jeff. I’ve been watching your channel for a while, and really like your no BS approach. There are a lot of channels out there in YouTubeville, but I keep coming back to yours because I feel I can trust your recommendations, based on your background and dedication to your craft. I know you will probably never see this comment, but putting it out there anyway. So I am a middle aged guy. 6’4 and been thin all my life, which I’m kinda ok with, but I have been pushing myself for the last year to condition myself to be a little more cut, and have the ability to be active much later in life. So basically, where most people would say a person is on the decline, I want to turn up the gas and change some things inside and out. How does that relate to a protein video you may be asking? I’m lactose intolerant. Even the protein brands like Muscle Milk that say they are lactose free mess with my constitution, and it’s just not worth it for me to use them. BUT they are the HIGHEST is all the right stuff in a complete protein. So, I know nutrition, not supplements, is the foundation of making a change in your body, and I am challenged in being able to get enough of the right proteins on a consistent basis to make any type of lasting change. So do you have any nutrition plans specifically for those who are lactose intolerant to be successful? I feel like I’ll just be just starting over again, rather than actually beginning to make progress otherwise. I’m not going to just throw up my hands. What if I’m at 13.5% body fat and eat at Maintenance, can a body recomposition occur? At least until I reach 12% body fat or so, then I’d move to a surplus until I reach 15% and then cut. I don’t want to only cut right now at 13.5% bf because I want to build muscle, but I also don’t want to eat at surplus bc my body fat is already higher than I’d like.

Question about the recommended protein intake: I think Kelli said.5 to 1.5 g protein / lb body weight, but then later Dan said 2 g / kg bodyweight is way too high (he was using a per kg bodyweight measure). So is the recommended amount.5 to 1.5 g protein / kg body weight? For me, 160 g protein (calculated from a per lb measure) seems way too much, but 73 g protein (calculated from a per kg measure) makes more sense.
Plant protein is great for avoiding the issues with whey like diarrhea. However research the brand you are buying. The green label project conducted a study on 150 proteins and their BPA and toxic metal levels and generally speaking, Plant had less BPA but had double if not more lead and arsenic than whey. For more info look up “Green Label Project Protein Powder”. The Green Label project rated Vega consistently at 1 star which is a very popular organic brand at Walmart and Target. The Orgain Brand at Costco is also garbage. Two stars.

So, know which vegetable combinations to put in your meal. Know which meats give the adequate amount of protein for the current meal. Rely on casein and your Whey protein if all else fails.
Body weight (lbs) x 13 to cut, body weight x 17 to bulk is my sweet spot. And yes I agree it totally sucks once you get below 1500 calories. It’s not even worth the effort at that point
I always struggle with my protein intake. Some days I’ll quite literally eat an entire water buffalo and then other days I barely manage anything past a single, pitiful protein shake simply because I want something chocolatey.
So I have been under eating for a while now and I honestly don’t get hungry too often. Should I eat in maintenance and continue resistance training? I want to start getting some more definition in the abs, but I think I have loss enough fat.

Great video! But your comment on plant-based proteins being “deficient in other essential amino acids” ( 02:00) is misleading. Although it is commonly believed that plant proteins are “incomplete” or inferior to animal proteins, the scientific evidence for this is lacking. In fact, a recent scientific paper published by Stanford researchers states that “the claim that certain plant foods are “missing” specific amino acids is demonstrably false. All plant foods contain all 20 amino acids, including the 9 indispensable amino acids”. I take like 8 scoops of star nutrition pea protein (protein powder) every day. I do full body work out 4 times in a week. I eat only plant based whole food. Is 8 scoops to much? I don’t have a lot of time to eat.
My problem with proteins is that I’m vegetarian that’s why I have to supplement with plant based protein powder very often! Also, I’m doing my best with Reverse Diet but it’s so hard to eat more calories and do not follow into a bad “mental” place around calories and it’s so hard to eat more calories too because with a plant based diet you don’t have many calories dense food to add in. The other day I tried to educate myself around dairy and I’m very curious to know what do you think about it! I read many doctors think it’s not a good choice to eat dairy products or many eggs during the week (because of colesterole). I was kind of expecting a more negative view on the vegetarian proteins… So many people in fitness talk about vegetarian sources not being complete, not realizing that you can in fact make them complete by combining them.. Knowledgeable as always!
Great tips! I have been doing better about reaching my protein goals when I started counting my macros (plus my deficit is a lot more manageable in terms of hunger levels and mood when I’m eating plenty of protein!) my one crutch is using protein powder almost every day, and I mix it with milk for more protein plus flavor. I’m trying to get off of using it every day but it’s just so easy lol:(
vegetarian amino acid sources…incomplete protein…yet animals get all of their amino acids from plants….hmm
FACT The human body (no matter how large or small, fit & strong or unhealthy & weak; everyone is the same) cannot digest more than an average of 9 grams of protein PER HOUR, which means that anything consumed in excess of that in one sitting will potentially turn to fat. Post-gym, sure, make your protein shake but only drink a small portion of it (this will depend on how many servings you make yours with plus other factors, such as milk and other ingredients), but it’s highly recommended that you drip-feed your body of protein and not slam it all in one sitting.
Also, if you’re Intermittent Fasting, ensure you go to the gym towards the end of your cycle (no BCAAs before as they break the fast!), but absolutely make sure you break your fast gently. Because your digestive system has been sleeping you may lose probiotics, and so THE best way is to gently reintroduce food by consuming a few small mouthfuls of non-fat Greek yoghurt for it will replace any depleted probiotics AND supply the 9g of protein. And while the yoghurt is being digested, go ahead and prepare your next meal; wait between 30-60 minutes. Good luck!

I have such a hard time getting in protein. I weight 165 and I’m 6ft. I’m trying to hit about 135 grams a day but I can’t get over 100 grams. I’ve added eggs, chicken, and I’ve needed to add protein to my coffee, which I really don’t want to have to consume my protein through powder.
I usually do strength training in the mornings right after waking upthat works best with my schedule. I also don’t eat breakfast and have lunch around 12:00 pm and eat my protein then. Is this okay or am I missing that protein window?? I tend to skip breakfast because it makes me nauseous and helps me stay in my calorie deficit!

Animal based proteins better than plant based protein if you compare about protein synthesis. But what you get when consumed animal based protein? Lack of fiber minerals, enzymes. but high is saturated fats and toxins. if you learn how to compliment plants the benefits from the plant based proteins much much higher than any kind of animal based protein. Casein gets a lot of flak, personally I don’t understand why. I have a very fast metabolism and tried whey protein for a while, and got minimal results regardless of how much I took in during the day because I digested it before it could do anything. I’ve been on casein for a couple of years now, and not only does it taste so much better, but I see much better results and recovery, and I feel way better afterward. I like that this video explained that sometimes you have to do what’s best for you personally when it comes to protein supplementation instead of blindly knocking one source or another based on circumstantial and subjective evidence. That’s what I love about this channel, it really does put the science back in fitness, and in a way that everyone can under it. Plus it motivates me to get into the gym and bust my fuckin ass every day (without overtraining of course).
