The actions of the sartorius include: 1 Hip flexion: Bending at the hip, as when you march in place with high knees Hip abduction: Moving your leg away from your midline, as when you take a step to the side External hip rotation: Rotating your leg outward so your thigh, knee, and toes turn toward. The sartorius muscle is a superficial muscle. It originates on the anterior superior iliac spine (asis), which is commonly referred to as the hip point, and sweeps down at an angle across the front of the thigh and inserts into the pes anserine. The pes anserine is an area just below the inside of the knee.
The movements that the sartorius does is: Flexion of your hip. This means that it bends your hip up as if you were marching. Other muscles, such as your psoas External rotation of your hip.
The sartorius has a line of pull across the front of your thigh, and this line of pull Flexion of your.Sartorius muscle It originates from the anterior superior iliac spine (ASIS) and from the notch between ASIS and anterior inferior iliac spine and gets inserted into the superior part of the anteromedial surface of tibia in the pes anserinus. It is innervated by the femoral nerve and artery supply is through the femoral artery. Here are more facts to stitch up your knowledge of the sartorius: Its name is derived from the Latin word for “tailor,” since the hip and knee movements it facilitates mimic a tailor The sartorius is the longest muscle in the human body (Barclay 2017). In yoga, the sartorius contracts during fire.
The sartorius muscle originates from the anterior superior iliac spine and part of the notch between the anterior superior iliac spine and anterior inferior iliac spine. It runs obliquely across the upper and anterior part of the thigh in an inferomedial direction. It passes behind the medial condyle of the femur to end in a tendon.
To strengthen the sartorius muscle, you need to train the combined movements of hip flexion, abduction, and external rotation. Resistance band exercises allow you to work the sartorius muscle through its range of movement, and build strength. In a previous article, I published a video showing a great sartorius stretch for runners. The sartorius muscle assists in flexing, abduction, and lateral rotation of the hip.
If you are seated, extend your leg so that it straightens – the quads are doing most of the work with the sartorius contributing. Now, push your leg out toward your side. Once. The sartorius muscle is part of a group of muscles in your hip that are known as hip flexors.
Hip flexor exercises include sartorius exercises that help with sartorius muscle strengthening. These exercises can also help with sartorius rehab, in case you’re recovering from an injury. It stretches from the anterior superior iliac spine (ASIS) to the medial knee. The sartorius is a hip flexor along with the rectus femoris, iliopsoas and tensor fasciae latae. Causes of Sartorius Muscle Pain. The sartorius muscle is the longest muscle in the entire human body.
It is a long, thin, band-like muscle found in the anterior region of the thigh. The sartorius functions as an important flexor and rotator of the thigh at the hip joint. The sartorius muscle arises from the anterior superior iliac spine on the lateral edge of the hip bone.At the tibiofemoral joint, the sartorius is a synergist in knee flexion (working with the prime movers – biceps femoris, semitendinosus, and semimembranosus) and involved. The sartorius muscle is kind of the forgotten hip flexor muscle.

Excellent. Straightforward. I don’t know for sure if it’s the Sartorius. It stretches down the inner thigh? Mine feels sore so I’d like to stretch it.
That’s given some instant relief, thank you so much! I will continue to do this regularly with my other stretches I do daily.
This video was lovely! The instructions were beautifully simple and I like how calm you two are.:)
Hi. So which sartorious are you streching? The right or left one?
Very knowledgeable and straight to the point! Thanks for the video
So I have a sharp pain right on my asis, I assume it’s the sartorious muscle at its origin. I do alot of squats, because of strength training and omfg this had me tapping in like 30 seconds. Some of the pain feels lifted but it’s hard to tell right now. I will check back to let you know if it helped. All other sartorious stretches didn’t do shit for me.
So just rubbing it can get rid of the horrendous pain? when standing up, it feels like my hip goes out of the socket right where you pointed. I am waiting on MRI approval to see whats going on. Will they find that it is this muscle?
Perfect! Thank you so much. I think this is really going to help.
When stretching for taekwondo and karate any of the legs apart stretches or high round or side kicks really pull on the pes anserine area and cause awful pain (not so much with the front kicks). It also happens when I sit cross legged. I know I am very tight in my hips and legs and I am convinced this has something to do with tight sartorius and other pes anserine muscles. This stretch felt fantastic. I’m going to stretch nearly every day with this and other stretches and I think it will help.
Will update this post in a few months for anyone interested or with a similar problem.
Ofc if you can get into this position then you probably dont have any issues
I love your pants. I like to know exactly where my muscles are and what they do. Where did you get it? I want one!
Nice stretches for a healthy sartorius muscle. I need baby steps to reach this level of stretching for my right satorius muscle.
I love your pants (legging’s) They are awesome coming from an A and P perspective and nursing student!
Great video this long muscle it was causing me all sorts of problems I’m a skateboarder and it’s my leg that I stand on in the front hard not to have a muscle imbalance in that sport
I have never stretched this muscle in my life, and my right leg is heavily externally rotated. I’ve been trying to stretch every other muscle, but what you showed in this video works amazingly! Again, I have never stretched this muscle, and I have no chance of getting as flat as you did, but this feels great. Thank you (can’t believe people don’t mention this in every other tutorial I have seen about externally rotated hips).
Good vid but I am not sure…I already have a problem with that muscle.
Hey colleague
Good demonstration but I think u need to speed your throwing
Keep the good work
Great instructional video, and holy crap this stretch is insane!! I’m now gonna start doing this stretch daily because I really need it. One question though: I noticed that you’re slightly arching your lower back, but my lower back has to be seriously arched for me to be able to lean back and get into position. What do you recommend: should I use my elbows as support instead or allow for some arching and work on pressing my lower back closer towards the ground instead (it naturally gets closer to the ground after about 30 secs in the position)? Again, great video and thanks a bunch!:)
From a physical therapist’s viewpoint: I think he is confused between the sartorius and rectus femoralis… Which are two very different muscles who do very different things, therefore stretch very differently. The main actions of the sartorius muscle are flexion and external rotation of the femur. The best way to stretch the muscle would then be to do the opposite actions, which are extention and internal rotation of the femur. Thats why personal trainers should not give specific muscle indications, but rather general muscle groups (ex: Physical therapis: this is a typical quadriceps stretch, most precisely the rectus femoralis, which is indeed the longest muscle of the body, since it attaches from the pelvis to the anterior aspect of the tibial tuberosity. Trainer: this is a quadriceps stretch).
For us that are not so flexible, is there any modification that you can suggest?
That’s a basic streching of the quadriceps not the sartorius…
Thanks I’ve been dealing with satorius muscle problem for over a year. Been doing your stretch for a week now feels great.
Two orthopedic Doctors said I need full hip replacement.
They didn’t want to listen.
When pointed to the problem area. The point in the front area. I knew I didn’t need replacement. They seen my top notch insurance
Plan. 80k per hip.
Thanks again!
Great video, just have a quick question: I’ve been struggling with inner knee pain for over a year now but it only hurts when my knee is in full flexion either when sitting on your heels like you were (hero pose in yoga) or sitting cross legged trying to pull the heel into the groin. I’ve eliminated the common issues like meniscus problems and can’t seem to figure out the problem. Do you think it could be the sartorius insertion at the pes anserine?
I have a huge pain what will be a good recommendation! Help!!
