I understand were Dr.Gregor is coming from, he is talking about the direct research on oils… But those studies are done on already sick populations most the time. Or rather populations that eat meat and/or don’t consume a whole foods plant based diet.

One of the points is purely deceptive.
I agree oil isn’t a health food, but using the increase in coagulation factor as a point against oil is pointless. It doesn’t matter how high the concentration of coagulation factor 7 in your bloodstream is, it won’t be used to initiate the formation of a clot until it is able to react with tissue factor found on the OUTSIDE of our blood vessels. The only way that will happen is if you start bleeding through a cut/scrape etc.

Also saying that eating fat means you will have fat in your bloodstream doesn’t need studies to be backed up lol. It’s obvious. Just like eating poison or cholesterol means it will end up in your blood.
Furthermore, fat will stay in the blood for much shorter if it isn’t eaten with carbs. The issue is when you mix a lot of carbs with a lot of fat. (especially in their processed states). High carb is ok. High fat is ok. But high carb and fat isn’t.
Mediteraen Diet is healthy, but you cannot draw the conclusion that olive oil is related to this only because it was part of the mediteranean diet. Neither can you mention fish as the reason. What about the abundant fresh veg and fruit typically available in the mediteranean?

If you want good Olive go to these places and why not go and do olive picking. Sometimes you can find some decent small brands on the internet but forget buying anything from the supermarket! Go for first press but also Cold PRESSED and pref organic

Dr. Greger, but what about those that already have fairly clogged arteries? I believe those advocating to remove avocados and nuts from the diet are doing it for their patients with advanced atherosclerosis. Since the blood flow through those type of arteries is already severely compromised, any fats will cause the blood flow to be further reduced. Wouldn’t that sound reasonable?

Make sure when you buy. Its extra virgin organic olive oil unrefined and it is cold pressed. Also that it is in a dark GLASS container. A good product from Braggs is excellent.
People, stop listening to cranks like this (be they vegan or not) with their retarded dietary doctrines. Give fussy eaters who are out to convert you the middle finger and simply enjoy your life. Eat everything just try to eat moderate portions. The greatest mistake people do with their diet in times of plenty is that they don’t know how to stop. Beyond that point there’s no magical diet that will prevent you from dying or completely eliminate your risk of getting sick. Eat sparingly, keep your body moving a lot, surround yourself with people that love you, get passionate about something in life and do you check ups every once in a while. There’s not a whole lot more you can do about your health.

Is there a cutoff point where the harm caused by oil becomes somewhat negligible? About a week ago I decided to move towards more whole foods and have pretty much entirely cleaned up my diet with the exception of oil. The thing is, it’s not like I cover everything with it, I just find it difficult to cook certain things without using a little bit of oil and the times I’ve attempted it they turned out really bad. I would say I consume 1-2 tablespoons per day, which I guess would be 1.5 on average.

Speaking of antioxidants… look for extra virgin olive oil that is first cold pressed. First cold pressed is the best grade because of the least amount of acidity and highest level of fatty acids and polyphenols (antioxidants). After the first pressing, the oil begins to lose its antioxidant strength. The most powerful polyphenol in extra virgin olive oil is hydroxytyrosol, which is what also gives the oil its great flavor. It is found in highest concentrations in olives grown in the Mediterranean region, particularly Spain. So, look for oil from Spain that is first cold pressed and has a harvest date.
My dad passed away a couple of years ago from a heart attack. He was vegan and very athletic. A runner and a cyclist. I truly believe it was the oil that caused his heart attack.

Sorry to bother, but the extra virgin olive oil is the pure one. The light one is refined and has no nutritions in it anymore. When you cook in cold pressed oils (like extra vergin olive oil) it will not turn into trans fats. These oils are more sensitive, their boiling point is much lower then refined oils. That’s the reason why the risk of cancer is much higher, the oils simply burn when heated

Adding fats can cause adverse or beneficial affects on blood lipids…. most folks they test this on are on the SAD… so eating some nuts will likely benefit them. If you are already on a healthful diet…. you just have to try and see.

As usual Dr Greger leaves out the information that isn’t supportive of his biases. In this case look at the abstract at 1:38. The conclusion says that canola oil is beneficial. Yet here is Greger saying don’t eat any oils just whole foods. Either quote the whole study or don’t use it Dr Greger. This is why I have to double check everything he says before I incorporate his recommendations into my diet.
I never use oil,sugar or salt. You can cook in a non stick pan w/ water or bake on parchment paper. Lots of no oil,salt and sugar recipes on line!!

EX: I’m biracial and I know that i have a diet that’s very different from my husband due to him being full African American and him being male and I female. So there are many factors that have to play key in making “healthy food choices. Yes we are both healthy nut still can not have the same things due to me coming from an overweight family background and he doesn’t. Thats a factor that needed to mentioned to my doctor in order for them to make some “healthy” food adjustments.

I come from a mediterranean country we make our own olive oil here as many do, I did quit adding olive oil to salads and and other dishes and I have to say I felt much lighter and better ever since, not as in I lost weight but as in I feel like my blood flows much better, I am more energetic, and I take longer to get tired, it’s like I am 5 years younger, I only add olive oil to dough for pizza now to keep it from sticking to the tray, and for greasing doors and we also make soap from it

1. Oils do NOT “generally” raise LDL-cholesterol, you just made that up. Most plant oils do NOT raise LDL-cholesterol levels. Coconut oil and palm oil are two of the very few exceptions, which many vegans do not consume EVER.
2. The protective effect of extra virgin (this is important, because lots of polyunsatured fatty acids are what we’re looking for, do never use refined oil) olive oil on endothelial function and the reduction of oxidative stress is a well-researched area. These were successfully documented in dozens of studies and the physical effect has also been identified. Some studies contradict these findings, but selectively quoting these studies, that only make up a minority of the research in this field and are, in part, of questionable quality, does not make you be right. Why don’t you ever try do “debunk” the huge scientific evidence that contradicts your statements? Oh yeah, because you can’t. You’re cherry-picking studies and thus deliver a biased image of the state of the art of research in the field, just to support your agenda. That kind of behavior is UNSCIENTIFIC. Using Dr. Klaper to underline your statements, who is the laughing stock of the scientific community for excessively using pseudocientific statements only underlines your unscientific mindset and that you’re open to quacks.
3. Avoiding fat alone will not help you to avoid getting diabetes as a vegan, which is basically what you’re suggesting. This is a dangerous statement! Many vegans eat too much sugar and other short-chain carbohydrates. There is no scientific evidence to support this yet, but I claim that most vegans become obese because of their carbohydrates intake and not because of fat.

On average Israeli live 14 years longer because of a mainly Plant based diet of fresh salads, legume based dips such as Humus and not eating a lot of Meat, Chicken and Fish.

At the conclusion of this video it stated that the Mediterranean diet is healthy because it is largely whole plants foods based so if you took the fish and animal foods included and the olive oil away I am confident that all those who follow the Mediterranean diet would still live long healthy lives. Any time a raw food is “processed” you run the risk of not knowing what was done to it. Even pressing and juicing are a type of process. Both of which create a product that’s higher in some concentrations and lower in the fiber of the raw food.
The main contradiction within science in modern era is that it is placed within a capitalist system where wealth accumilation dictates over everything, even reason itself.
In order for this to be overcome every single human possible must be involved within the scientific community, quite literally becoming scientists themselves to some degree or another, and the people must be allowed to have access to every and all the resources and the instruments of science necessary for the discovery of new knowledge. Science means nothing if it is knowledge that is being passed down by an individual or small groups of people whom may have monetary interests or who are simply bias. When we are all involved this allows for greater sums of information (whether right or wrong) to be acknolwded and tested. Conflict will then start to ensue which will be necessary to create an even more perfect and pure form of knowledge.
Science will then have to be democratic and this type of democracy will have to be scientific.

The thing we all forget about “the healthiest diets” is the everyday life of the people who originally followed them. Sure the mediterranean diet or the Okinawa diet are amazing but as a Greek if I decide to follow the Okinawa diet most of my food would be highly processed, cause the products naturally grown or produced here are totally different. That’s why eating fish for example in any mediterranean country is so different from any other fish in the world. Foods are different because the ecosystem from place to place is so different! Even if all goods from elsewhere are imported, still not the same in taste or nutrients. Ramen soup in Greece totally different than same ingredient ramen in London or Tokyo! (Tokyo definitely wins!)

Some oils were tested by a German consumer’s association and scored badly because some of them had been heated (to preserve them), some had been mixed with cheaper oils from Morocco or other countries, some others contained bad substances because oil from the oil presses had leaked and fallen into the virgin olive oil. The real olive oil is produced by pressing fresh olives with simple machines. It resembles the juicing of fruits. This real oil looks very green and it is not clear at all like in the picture below (see link). I know because my family also produces small quantities of oil.
