Thanks for the great video, it helped me a lot to hear your point of view. I was confused because I heard Ornish and Esselstyn talk about detrimental effects of olive oil.
I personally don’t include olive oil in my diet but maybe it there’s a chance to gain weight by including more calories = olive oil. From a “whole foods” perspective, I would still prefer whole olives over olive oil.
Until there’s more data I will take the standpoint “I don’t need it but if it replaces inferior oils -> go for it.”
so what to use for cooking instead of oil? just some water or nothing?
Your studies are bogus and fake! Look who funds the study… people against olive oil.
A better study would be to find out if olive oil is real or not since alot of it is diluted with other vegetable oils which is probably what there using in these studies.
He never once mentions olive oil is a fat bomb. Liquid fat. You want to see the results look at all the fat balding Italian and Greek grannies who have to shave their moustache. There’s your future if you drown your food in this liquid fat.
Other than the sodium, wouldn’t a small amount of olives be healthier than olive oil? I rinse my olives to reduce sodium. I also keep my overall sodium levels low. Olives are a whole food. Olive oil is processed. Wouldn’t olives give the same benefits in a whole food form?
My first and biggest issue with this video is the screenshot of the conclusion from the study you mentioned at the end. WHY did you blank out the rest of the sentence after “vinegar”??? The full sentence reads “In terms of their postprandial effects on endothelial function, the beneficial components of the Mediterranean and Lyon Diet Heart Study diets appear to be anti-oxidant rich foods, including vegetables, fruits, and their derivatives such as vinegar, and omega 3 rich fish and canola oils.” WHY would you not quote the rest?? I am vegan as well… but I think presenting results like can come across as dishonest and can hurt our movement in the long term!
In the European cohort mentioned, why didn’t you mention that they still found a modest reduction in CVD risk when adding olive oil to a Mediterranean diet even after controlling for dietary patterns? Meaning it seems to have provided an additional benefit. Not only that, but in the conclusion of the study, the authors say that their “findings back the need to preserve the culinary use of olive oil within the Mediterranean dietary tradition.” Seems misleading to have left this out of the video.
Additionally, there was a more recent systematic review and meta analysis (higher level evidence) that included the large cohort that you brought up. It had even more participants (over 100,000) and looked at case control, cohort, and intervention studies. It found that the available studies support an inverse association of olive oil consumption with stroke (and with stroke and CVD combined) but no significant association with CVD alone.
About endothelial function, there was another more recent meta analysis and systematic review of randomized controlled trials (again higher level evidence) that looked specifically at olive oil and it’s effects on markers of inflammation and endothelial function (and yes they measured FMD). It found evidence that olive oil might exert beneficial effects on endothelial function as well as markers of inflammation. I am just very confused as to why you chose to only bring up these individual studies when there are meta analysis and systematic reviews that pool the results of multiple studies and have higher statistical power and significance??
Dude all of these studies what the hell do you do you give people a cup of olive oil to drink or whatever? If not how do you know if it’s the actual olive oil that does the damage and not other ingredients in that meal?? And ever heard of MODERATION?? If I eat 1 kg of broccoli won’t I have digestive issues?? 50 g of olive oil per day is what should be consumed max according to Drs in S. Europe!! You overload those patients with oil and then oooh olive oil is the devil!! Veggies neutralise the damage but you even bitch about adding extra virgin olive oil in SALADS in the whole food plant based diet?? Mediterran diets are rich in WHOLE grains??? Have you even been to Italy or Greece?? Whole grain pizza, carbonara and gyros anyone? And let’s not forget brown rice risotto, huh? You’d invent pretty much everything to prove you’re right!
One concern that didn’t come up is how healthy olive oil is once it goes rancid. I think Dr. Greger mentioned once it goes bad after about 4 months on a shelf and would lose whatever good qualities it has.
In these studies, are people getting fresh, high quality olive oil? I’m assuming lots of people in the US don’t have access to olive oil that hasn’t been shipped & sitting around for months before they buy it & consume it.
Also on another video (maybe mic the vegan) there is a mention that extra virgin is usually cut with regular olive oil and there isn’t enough money to constantly test to regulate it.
I go to a grocery store that sells stuff that didn’t get sold at regular grocery stores. I always see giant containers of olive oil that’s been sitting around for who knows how long and people are buying it thinking it probably has the health benefits of people in these studies not knowing about rancidity and such.
Great video though!
I rly love your videos.. i watch a lot of nutrition influencer doctor in youtube..but almost everyone try to sell me diets..like dr greger (nutritionfacts) plant based diet or KenDBerryMD keto diet.
Thank you for your objectivity.:)
What about Canola oil? Please do a video on canola oil! I checked out the studies you represented here and in one they said that canola oil is healthy, olive oil is not.
What about algae oil supplements for plant based DHA/EPA, given the poor conversion rate of ALA in the body from sources such as flaxseed and walnuts etc?
I never use oil, and try to avoid things that have oil in it. The only exception is going out to a restaurant a couple of times per month, in which food is often cooked in oil; the family loves to go out and eat, where I prefer to make my own meals. Extracted oils are not whole foods, they are highly processed (and have so many calories). No thanks.
olive oil makes my balls bigger, and increases my erection quality
Am confused i have being told that extra virgin olive oil is healthy fat
Excellent informations, haven’t seen any in YouTube talk about olive oil like you did, very unique. Do video about honey please if possible. your fan from middle east
Many variables. Consider this, many counterfeit olive oils on the market. Maybe the trials used the counterfeit.
Virgin Olive oil thanks to its OLEIC acid content actually activates Sirtuins. That alone is powerfull stuff to consider. So basically Olive oil is good for aging. I dont use it, but I do eat olives from time to time.
thank you Dr. Klaper for always sharing great information. Good vibes to you!!!:)
A very important piece of information is missing from this video….Vogel tested the effects of three different meals on a group of 10 volunteers who had normal cholesterol levels. One meal consisted of canola oil and bread. Another was olive oil and bread. The third meal was a piece of salmon. All three meals contained 50 grams of fat. The arteries didn’t constrict much after the salmon meal. After the meal containing canola oil, they constricted slightly, reducing blood flow by 11%. After the olive oil and bread combination, however, blood flow plummeted 34% exactly the effect that Vogel had seen in previous research after volunteers ate a Big Mac with fries. HOWEVER….Vogel’s own research, in fact, has shown that when olive oil is combined with foods rich in antioxidants, such as vegetables, the vessel-constricting effect disappears. All you have to do is combine olive oil with red wine vinegar, which is loaded with the same antioxidants found in wine, and it appears you can prevent the deleterious effect on blood vessels.
Plus other results indicate an overall risk reduction of all-cause mortality (11%), cardiovascular mortality (12%), cardiovascular events (9%), and stroke (17%) when comparing the top versus bottom third of MUFA, olive oil, oleic acid, and MUFA:SFA ratio. MUFA of mixed animal and vegetable sources per se did not yield any significant effects on these outcome parameters. However, only olive oil seems to be associated with reduced risk

It’s weird. Everyone I know who has lived a long healthy life, has not lived a healthy lifestyle. They ate and drank whatever they wanted. Explain that to me. Oh, it’s called genes. If you have good genes, good mental outlook and exercise a healthy diet is helpful but not nearly the most important.
When it comes to olive oil, extra virgin high phenolic is the best substance you can offer to your body regarding your cardiovascular health, and protection from chronic inflammation, cancer, diabetes and alzheimers tons of recent studies support this!
This is shocking. Olives are very good for us, so naturally I thought that olive oil would be fine, especially as a supplement.
Great oil! We’ve only purchased our oil from this company for the past 8+ years. Occasionally, you can find their oil “Sun Grove Foods” at TJ Maxx, Marshalls & very rarely Home Goods! Great teaching!
Dipping bread in oil vs. a light spray to coat a pan Must have some significant differences.
does impair endothelial function mean the same thing as it clogs arteries. I’m concerned if olive oil, more specifically EVOO, will contribute to clogging of the arteries.
Thank you so much for your work. You are very clear and give great detailed explanations that really help us understand. Can you please do a video on the effects of alcohol?
Aren’t AGEs a result of heating sugars to/past browning point, which oil simply facilitates at higher temperatures than water? I’m more concerned with aldehydes
This guy’s verbal communication skills are awful…sounds like he’s afraid to open his mouth. And hey, periods and commas apply when speaking, too! Very annoying. Geesh.
Keep in mind that the addition of fat (like olive oil) to your salad or greens helps absorb some vitamins (liposoluble: ADEK) and antioxidants.
people swearing by vegan-ism… if Vitamin K (sourced from plants) is used in the body for clotting blood and you move to a diet in constant excess of this surely this puts a higher risk of heart disease?… also the sun is the source of all life, surely we could just rely on the suns energy? no..why? because we dont have the mechanisms for converting that energy, plants do but specifically in a way for plants (not brains/complex systems)….. travelling animals eat these plants vastley and have body systems designed to convert and engineer the incoming energy for supporting say the classifications of a mammal…. this process from sun to the mammal chemically takes a lot of work/converting that the human body is not sufficient/unable in doing therefore to rely on plants is stupid…. and to state that in ancient times we wouldnt have access to this and that and who the fucks waiting months on a cabbage?…. there wernt no b12 supplements then…. and in the course of evolution our bodys have adapted to dealing with these diets of complex intakes meat and plant alike… it is the artificial changes to food that brings problems and plant foods are not exempt from these changes
Olive oil has no taste! Just try tasting it alone you’ll see…..it only adds fat to your body, is highly processed, and it does not make food taste better.
It seems I feel sick no matter what I eat. Meals mess me up and all I can do is fast to feel better.
But the good doc is so thin that he wouldn’t make it if he was ever really stressed by life. Lumping salt “sugar” and fat together may have validity, but leave out sugar and processed vegetable oil and you have something completely different. Quit throwing the baby out with the bath water. Grow up. Take the high road by sharing facts without bias or manipulation. Quit preaching to an immature audience. Man up!
I use the extra virgin olive oil cautiously. A bit on my buckwheat or salad for taste. Still sucks that it’s not the best choice, though:(
Great stuff as usual! Do you have any videos like this on supposed benefits of having wine and chocolate?
saturated fat and cholesterol are some of the most ill observed things found in medicine.
I’m new to the Chanel and love your content. Youre awesome! Thanks for simplifying everything
I don’t like the taste of olive oil so mostly use extra virgin rapeseed or avocado oils but whenever I hear controversial or argumentative comments they’re usually about coconut or Canola oils. Apart from the confusion over the smoke points I wasn’t even aware that some people think olive oils are unhealthy.
If you listen to this guy you won’t eat anything at all. I know guys that have smoked worked in a factory and ate Bologna sandwiches every day of their life and live to be 90. While the vegan dies at 40. Enjoy life, it’s too short. 40 or 90.

Eat the whole olives, not the olive oil (if you even believe that unregulated stuff they sell in supermarkets is actually olive oil). Chopped olives on a salad are delicious.
Heared this from Dr. Greger and now from you. This really helps me motevate:)
When it comes to b12 whould you recommend methylcobalamin or cyanocobalamin?
And fun with the word SOS free diet salt, sugar and oil free diet
One needs to know what the best oil is for salad dressing. Or dipping bread in oil and good salt & herbs.
OK, so in conjunction with other healthy foods, it appears at worst that there is a neutral effect to using a nominal amount of extra virgin olive oil. Is anyone chugging extra virgin in hopes of improving their health?
Brilliant DoctorKapler! I admire you so much!!
Gretting from Cartagena Colombia!

THANK YOU! It’s soo refreshing to hear someone being so un-biased. Seeing from both sides, not identifying with with either, just out after the truth. While also seeing the bigger picture. My new favourite nutrition channel, keep it up!
We have our own olive trees and every year we make oil and soap from them, 100% natural, I rarely use it now as a food and it feels better, I am wondering about topical use of it, is it bad?
Still there are many other uses for it, and I hear olive leaves tea is good
Oils gone, sugars gone, you might have to pry the himilayan salt out of this whole food vegans dead hands though
eat what the F**K you want to eat.Being so anxious and worried about whats getting into your body may do you even more harm than the thing itself WHY THE FUCK CANT EVERYONE JUST CHILL AND PEEEEAAACEEEEE freaking INTERNET HAS TURNED US INTO FUCKING MUPPETS PEACE and out bros
” What do I do before I go to a restaurant? I eat” LOL. I thought I was the only one. I eat and then I only buy a drink or two. I’ve saved hundreds of dollars a year doing this as well as my arteries.Nobody cares you’re not eating and if they do, find new friends.
Thanks for another great video. I’ll repeat what others have said here and what I’ve said in the past that your approach to nutrition and science is nuanced and extremely clear, although those seem to contradict each other, lol!
Speaking as a unicorn (someone whose been on an Esselstyn no-oil and even no nuts or avocado regiment for almost three years), I know that the way I eat is helping to reverse my disease, as a followup angiogram has confirmed a lot of progress. Would that have happened if I’d consumed higher fat foods? It’s impossible to say, and I’d rather not test it out.
I do think that the FMD test is relied on a bit too heavily by the non-fatters like Esselstyn, Ornish and McDougal (and their attack dogs ;-), but here’s my own odd logic and let me know if you think this doesn’t hold up. We have Predimed and epidemiological studies which seem to show a Mediterannean diet reduces CVD risk, and they include not only olive oil, but nuts, avocado, even some fish and chicken The problem I have is what the control group is eating, and how MUCH they reduce risk. It seems they reduce the risk but they don’t eliminate it, and the control groups are generally just a standard American diet, so of course they are going to see a benefit. If predimed simply added olive oil, then did the people who were in the test group end up eating fewer calories of other foods? It seems unlikely that they would eat exactly the same calories as the control plus whatever additional amount of oil they were told to? My question is always ‘what are the people in studies who are getting X food removing from their diet in order to fit those additional calories in?’ Unless it’s a ward study where everything is controlled and not ad libitum, it seems it’s going to be very difficult to tease apart whether X food actually provided and absolute benefit or just a comparative one over some food that is not as healthy?
As someone else here also pointed out, when it comes to heart disease, it’s very tricky in terms of suggesting one person definitely has it whereas another person doesn’t in that people who’ve had heart attacks, stents, bypasses, etc., obviously have the disease, but what about those just with high cholesterol? Plaques have been found even in young children, in addition to teens and those in their 20’s, none of whom had any signs of heart disease. By their 30’s and 40’s, and 50’s, many of those people will have been diagnosed due to an event or serious symptoms like angina, but many will just show as having perhaps elevated lipids and get sent home with some statins. Does that mean they don’t have heart disease? My point is not to suggest that olive oil (or nuts or avocado) CAUSE heart disease. I think that’s more of a stretch. But in terms of trying to heal from heart disease, where do we draw the line of who actually has it? If I’ve been on Esselstyn for 3 years (or for some who’ve been on it for 10 years), do we assume they somehow no longer have it and so then they can safely eat oil?
I do get the conundrum of telling a wide audience they should avoid oil ON TOP OF staying away from animal products. I’ve had vegans who call my diet choice “extreme” and I suppose from a demographic basis it is. I know it is perfectly sustainable and I don’t need oil in my life. My only complaint is that because 99.9% of people use it regularly, it is very difficult to find food I can buy ready made that doesn’t have oil in it, especially at restaurants. So I’m not necessarily suggesting that we should tell everyone to remove oil completely, but I do think it’s reasonable to say that if you know you are health and don’t have weight issues or underlying problems like high cholesterol, diabetes, heart disease, etc., that you should at the very least limit yourself to 1-2 tbsp of the stuff at most. I don’t think that should be a huge imposition and it would at least get people used to using a very moderate amount, since when I was on a Mediterranean diet myself before going on Esselstyn, I did tend to “slather it on” because of all the hype about it being so healthy.
Sir, I respect you and believe in much of what you say. However, the question “What do we use olive oil for?” is more complex. Moderation is indeed possible, and olive oil is culinary. This is the issue I have with many panacea diets; they are boring and unimaginative. I eat very little meat. I eat very little unhealthy fat. But I love food. There is a place in every diet, barring pathological issues, for good, flavorful foods like butter, olive oil, and eggs. What we need is measured, intelligent, and thoughtful approaches. Not imperatives and black and white thinking.
Very informative, visual explanation of why we should simply eat a low fat plant based diet and wonderfull easy Quick examples of how to make a simple well tasting salad just by mixing slices of Apples or oranges and a few walnuts or nuts into the veggies or if you prefer vinegar is also a possibility.
And how can we stirfry without using oil simply stirfrying in water or vegetable broth….
Do these studies take into account the food the olive oil is served with which could have a big impact on the outcome of the study? The first chart you showed indicated white bread was served with the olive oil. Might it not be that the bread is impacting the results? I think a study showing a green salad served with lemon and cold pressed organic olive oil dressing versus the same salad being consumed with “regular” oilve oil vs a third served without any dressing would be a more credible study of the impact of olive oil on health.
“Paralysis of our arteries for hours after eating fast foods”, omg.
LOOK UP TYPES OF PRECURSORS FOR INFLAMMATION AND PRECURSORS FOR ANTI-INFLAMMATORY CHEMICALS. OMEGA 3 VS OMEGA 6 AND YOU WILL SEE OLIVE OIL has huge benefits. Read The Great Cholesterol Myth to understand it is NOT THE FAT that is the problem.
i am so happy that you now have a youtubechannel. for me, you are the greatest source of nutritionaly informations. sorry for my bad english:-).
No, especially considering most (upwards of 85%) labeled “olive oil” tested is not even olive oil. The “olive oil” syndicate is wrought with fraud and are selling things like grapeseed oil and other adulterated poisons as olive oil. Do the math. Add up how many olives it takes to make olive oil and then contemplate the oceans of shit being sold as such and then ask yourself what other planet are they importing these olives in from cause they sure aren’t getting that quantity on this planet alone. You’re being robbed and poisoned
oh yes, lets trust a study of sample size 10 people. 10! 2:11
Here I thought for years, by eating french baguette dipped in 1 cup of extra virgin olive oils was doing me a favor. FML.
@ Dr Klaper is there an oil you like? I would some oil to take with my Vitamin D3 and K2 supplement.
Take any drop of joy out of life. Poison is in the dose as is the medicine…dose matters
I tried the vegan keto diet for 3 weeks and totally regret it. Making oils the base of daily consumption is the worst thing you could do. So happy to be back on my regular vegan diet that is full of nutrition following Dr. Greger’s daily dozen! Also, I’ve eliminated oils completely. 2 meals a daya big bowl of oats with lots of healthy fruits, nuts and seeds toppings and a salad for lunch with beans, greens, cruciferous and 1 other veggie with balsamic vinegar or a lentil soup with veggies is perfect. Don’t need oils for anything! No trans fats yay:)
When i cut every possibly negative thing from my diet i become depressed, every single time. Not worth it for me.
What a load of crap..olive oul isxa natural product..anything that comes from nature is goid for you..The unnatural chemicals they add imto things like margarine are the killers…Its a well known fact that the Meditteranean diet results less in heart disesae than the western world…
Your right. I say keep total oil and salt low and your golden. Use oil if you want judiciously like you say minimally….
I had a chloesteral of only 90 my dr said it was genetic that I had a heart attack and 3 blocked arteries. Many studies show people who live longer actually have higher chloresteral so confusing. Why do people lose more weight on high fat diet. I was eating low carb cheeseburgers instead of chicken, no bread and I finally lost weight. On diet competitions the high fat bacon eating butter coffeee guy lost the most
Wonder what you eat? As you are mentioning what you are not eating. Would like to see one day of your diet.
What about the higher Omega 6:3 ratio in olive oil (I realise it is better than most other oils) and the negative consequences of that?
People have been eating olive oil around the Mediterranean for millennia. The surrounding countries are one of the healthiest as well as having really high life expectancies.
Just be sure to get extra virgin olive oil which has been cold pressed which basically means no heat or chemicals were used.
Some Drs advocate that to little salt can cause problems as well as too much salt.
I’ve just begun my vegan life (just turned 50,better late than never!)and its a lot of things that must go.Can you recommend something i can use instead of salt? Food tastes kind of awful whitout it
Rational? Olive oil 14% saturated fat, dietary advise less than 7 % of your total daily calories intake from saturated fat…..the two facts are not linked, he is not rational in his statement about this.
Please study nutrition. There is documentation from almost every country in the world and from almost every natural health practitioner about the health benefits of olive oil. Thank you but i will continue to use olive oil and many other oils. I will also continue to be slim and healthy.
I can see by your wrinkled appearance. YOU ARE VERY FAT DEFICIENT
Olives are important for collagen boosting. Very important for skin and divinely given.
Olive oil is the most fraudulent oil on the market! Why don’t you do a video on what type of olive oil is real olive oil! Cold-pressed and virgin! That would help us more
Olive oil is probably “less bad” than whatever it replaced in tests such as beef tallow, bacon grease and some worse vegetable oils. So, it looks like a health food in comparison.
Actually after your video on coconut oil, I have stopped using it for cooking. Now I use a moderate amount of olive oil for cooking and works great so far. Thanks for the eye opener!
i find it hard to believe that deep fried was no different than fresh olive oil *!!!!!!!! study was dodgy
Dr. Greger, you do realize that most people don’t have an inkling of what endothelium is, right?
The day i realized i was a unicorn. I used to drown my salads and sauces in extra expensive dark glass bottled extra virgen greek organic hippy olive oil, till i saw the studies which were mostly conducted on ppl who already ate a largely plant based mediterranean diet, so maybe the protective benifits came from eating all those plants instead of all tht red wine and oil. When i found out about all the calories in just one tablespoon of olive oil, i was in shock. Now i stopped using oils, the only oil i still take as a supplement every 3 days is a DHA algae oil supplement while the rest of my daily oil intake comes from whole foods like nuts and line and chia seeds, sun flower seeds etc.
This guy is a joke. Anyone can read studies by other people, but only this guy can do it and sound like a complete jerk.
Another issue with this video: in the screenshot of the Study at around 0:23, why did you leave out or not mention what it says right after “these high fat meals”?? The next sentence reads “This impairment, however, was also totally eliminated when vitamins C and E were given. As with antioxidant supplementation, olive oil, eaten with vinegar on a salad did not impair endothelial function”. I feel like not including or mentioning this leaves out important context
Maybe you should have said you just dont eat oils regularly because simply for a recall it is a very processed products (even if most people dont get it) which lost fiber and water containing most nutrients but also protein and carbs…100% fat with only some vitamin E, K and some essential fatty acids left and not much at all for olive oil actually!
If EVOO have some benefit in this chart you put in the video then extra virgin cold pressed canola oil and similar (maybe walnut oil) should be better because it does contains much more omega 3, and more E and K, i use a spoon of EV-CP raw canola oil occasionally, also to add easy calories because i’m very lean and almost in underweight BMI range and i find it hard for me to eat much more calories from whole foods.
Thank you so much for the video, it is easy and simple to understand.
So what the hell do I eat! Everything is bad for you! I’ll just eat air. Wait, that causes gas. I’ll just starve. Wait starvation causes death! I can’t win!!!:l
If you don’t have atherosclerosis. Autopsies have found in the real world atherosclerotic plaques streaks in 8 to 10 year olds. That seems to point to most of the population has some atherosclerosis.
A good controlled study would not be people on the SAD diet but take those on a whole foods plant based diet. Placebo control maybe muffins cookie etc one with olive oils one without (you would have to adjust the calorie density).
When you actually look at the study designs the meta analysis is based upon you seen serious flaws different base diets, diets so poor in antioxidants that oil oil antioxidants make a clinical difference, olive oil replacing butter. The nut studies also are flawed as it does not account for calories absorbed as heaps of nut particles are pooped out a calorie is not a calorie it’s calories that are absorbed that count.
Fat gain it requires more energy to convert a carb to fat than an oil back to a calorie not bring a calorie.
FMD given most heart attacks occur post a meal within a 2-4 hr window it is a serious consideration. Again back to percentage of those with signs of atherosclerosis in the general population.
Whilst I agree zooming in on one pixel will not give you the entire picture. Scrolling around and zooming in on a few more pixel of information helps but you still don’t see the whole picture.
Did we evolve to consume oil. Nope.
oils are not good. But if you have to use one oil then choose olive oil. It has better resistance in heat and more nutrisients
It’s like when everyone focuses on BLM, but neglect to realise George Floyd was a violent criminal and there was no evidence the cop was actually racist. In saying that, Police Brutality and reform seem to be the actual issue

What about natural peanut butter then? It has peanut oil. Is that unhealthy?(edit): Peanut butter is healthy in small uptakes. (2 tbsp)
I love oil olive, specially on roasted veggies! And i will continue using it!!
Darn it. Didn’t know it was this complicated when weighing the pros and cons of olive oil. I love the idea you gave on sautéing veggies with stock and then adding a bit of oil after. Going to try this on my next recipe I do love a little touch of oil when cooking, even if it’s just a teaspoon:). Thank you!!
Thank you, Dr. Klaipeda this was so concise and convincing! Sharing this on FB for the “ olive oil is healthy” people! I love all your lectures!
Dr Garth Davis just said on instgram that olive oil is good for you and that vegans saying it’s bad is hurting veganism because of misinformation. Im beginning to think the guys a joke
“People love to hear good news about their bad habits.” -Dr. John McDougall
This is ridiculous! Enjoy extra virgin olive oil! You’ll live along time.
Wow! I was looking for which oil is better to use as my cholesterol is high and this talk made me realized there’s no such thing as better oil. Thank you Dr. Klapper!
So happy that you have a YouTube channel now Dr. Klaper. Thanks for all you do!
While I am typically an oil avoider, I certainly see your point. Very refreshing and nuanced keeping it real.:-)
there are foods that dont have any negative effects, oid and fat do have negative effects.

[….] derivatives such as vinegar, and omega-3-rich fish and canola oils. deleted from conclusion. Agenda much?
Food for thought. The Okinawa people eat 65% of their diet from purple sweet potatoes and have the highest longevity and centurions.
Look at the Mediterranean diet. Olive oil is a huge part of its health benefits.
great video from a great company. Keep researching how to provide the healthiest EVOO.
Um so the people in different parts of the world that consume a good amount of olive oil.
So supposedly their unhealthy.
You need to update your view https://www.yourlifechoices.com.au/health/wellbeing/a-spoonful-of-olive-oil-can-fix-ed the latest science says olive oil helps with blood flow
The Vogel studies he cites showed that adding vitamin C and E either immediately before the olive oil consumption, or chronically, completely eliminated the reduction in artery function as assessed by flow mediated dilation. These Vogel papers also just use one technique, in one arm artery, on 10-20 subjects.
Hey Gil.
First of all, I love your videos and you are one of my favorite Youtubers when it comes to nutrition: you talk clearly and tend to be as impartial as possible. So, I would like to give you an idea for a video, since I see it as an extremely important subject: the hormonal impact (and not only caloric) on weight loss. Well, in the same video I’m commenting on, you talked about being in caloric deficit (the same in your video on weight loss) but this seems to me a very simplistic approach that disregards all the metabolic and hormonal characteristics (for example: the levels of leptin, insulin, cortisol and changes on basal metabolic rate) in weight loss. Therefore, I would like to hear from you more on the subject!
Anyway, keep up with your good work!
I love your videos!!! and thank you for your time and the effort you put to give us such a great information!! Actually now, all information I find in Internet I double check with your videos ))
But I can’t find if there is the video which explains the differences (pros/cons) of yeast and sourdough for our home made bread? I cook everything by myself and it is now a very interesting topic for me..
Thank you anyway 😉
Errr. can we stop waging war against one food group. Yes olive oil is not healthy if you eat in the quantities as americans do. I use 1 ltr of olive in 3 to 4 months. That is less 11 grams per day. This war on fat has lead to these highly processed food with too much sugar, salt and chemical additives. Just use it in small quantities and your foot will be so much tastier.Yes quinoa might be a superfood but it still taste as cardboard.
Dr Gundry eats a bottle of olive oil a week. He touts huge benefits.
Olive oil has a whopping 132 grams of Saturated fat per 100 mls. What does that tell you about Olive oil
Awesome! I really like your nuanced approach to nutritional science!
Liked and subbed!
Thank you for the video. Your saturated fat comparison between olive oil and nuts was a somwhat poor one. Olive oil is refined, while nuts are whole foods with fiber and phytonutrients that are bound to that fiber.
I was so reluctant to give up olive oil being Italian etc. Now, no problem! Thank you!
Yes salt, sugar, fat is what makes it taste good. I’m not sure one can gain much new insight in any area from this presentation.
Saying this in 2012 and now heaps more studies backing up poor endothelium function from fat.
2018 dec, unexpectedly Low fat group had enhanced flow mediated dilation.
https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/30513768
So which dr is trying to save you and which is trying to kill you?
I have some concern with the value of this “endothelia function” test because after eating, blood is naturally shunted to the gut while digestion is occurring and the heart works harder during this process. https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/10095388
I will eat less olive oil, I still use some to cook, but not as much anymore:)
Health-wise, is it okay to take a teaspoon or tablespoon of EVOO daily? If so, should you take it on an empty stomach or not, and what are the health benefits? Thanks so much!
One(1) question…..I’ve deep-dived into Olive Oil researchCan I drink one(1) tablespoon daily of quality Olive Oil?
Thank you for the nuance and dedication to evidence-based advice.
Wow! Here we go again! I been involved with food from A-Z! First you said a very general thing about all Americans. They can’t do moderation with their diets. What! I know hundreds who do it every day! I have worked at very healthy resturants. According to you and others. They are doing every thing right. I look at them and a lot of them are some of the most unhealthiest miserable people I have ever seen. Life is about balence! Moderation! Your attitude in life. That is something I hardley have heard folks like you never say. I have volumes more too say. I hope someone will listen and understand what I am saying. Ps. I was cooking and teaching before healthy foods was the in thing. Plus anyone can die at any moment. And be living a lifestyle of being healthy. Doing every thing right! Walk down the street and your breathing air pollution! Please stay positive everyone. It will help!
I eat olives and drink olive oil everyday. I am gonna live until 200 you suckers. HAHAHAHA
I quit all oil, my cholesterol dropped from 198 to 165. My bad cholesterol dropped from 109 to 95. My primary oil was EVOO. I ate it everyday.
what’s your view on grape seed oil or avocado oil for cooking?
What about medium chain triglycerides, doc? Butyrate or butyric acid (C-4) produced by good gut bacteria from the fibers we consume has been know to be beneficial to health; so does C-8 (caprylic acid) beneficial in similar ways? You said that a bit of added oil is needed to guide the oil soluble nutrients from vegetables into the blood to protect the arteries; so would MCT oil on salads do the same?
Sharp blood vessel constriction can injure the inner lining of blood vessels, according to Vogel. After a meal containing canola oil, the arteries constricted slightly, reducing blood flow by 11%. After a meal with olive oil and bread, however, blood flow plummeted 34% exactly the effect that Vogel had seen in previous research after volunteers ate a Big Mac with fries https://www.webmd.com/food-recipes/features/say-no-to-olive-oil#1
Your videos are always educational and to the point. Thank you for the great content!
The blue zones disagree just another American in his American bubble not realising the rest of the world doesn’t have such terrible farming practices. No foods perfect. Every food on the planet has flaws.
He seriously just compared the level of obesity with those in Greece with a higher rate of adverse outcomes yet has no evidence of this.
What one needs to know is that the type of fats in olive oil are omega 3’s to a higher degree vs meat fat which is mostly omega 6’s which are well known to be precursors to inflammatory products.
Furthermore, FATS are not the issue sugar is.
Olive oil paralyzes the blood vessels? The study he references says that they are “probably getting healthier in spite of the olive oil ” is nothing more than a guess.
It was inconclusive.
Hello Doctor Greger, how about this study that came a month after your video? Would love to hear your thoughts on this, maybe an idea for a future video https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC4586551/ with conclusion “The present systematic reviews provides some evidence that olive oil might exert beneficial effects on markers of inflammation and endothelial function. Since improvements in these parameters have been described in individuals adhering to a Mediterranean diet, olive oil might represent a key ingredient of this dietary pattern”
Klaper cut out sugars, oils, salt
Me cut out all sugars, seed/veg oils (not fruit oils like avocado and olive), starches, grains.
I’ve done the latter. I add 2 tsps. salt/day to make up for salts lost when I cut out all processed foods. Lost 45 lbs to 178 and waist/height ratio of <0.5, bp had been high now around 110/70, A1c now sub 5, fasting glucose in 80s, tryglcerides way down. Metabolic syndrome gone.
I agree with the doctor but he should see this study..
https://www.nutraingredients.com/Article/2010/03/31/Orange-juice-may-protect-against-bad-effects-of-high-fat-meals
The post prandial effect can be mitigated.
Same when vitamin C is taken with high fat meals.
Thoughtful treatment of a complex topic! It seems that whether to use olive oil or how much to use is the equivalent of a first world problem for healthy eaters. As you noted, if you are worried about olive oil, you are probably doing a lot of things right that have a bigger impact. Thanks for yet another great video!
Some stuff here is good but there is some really bad science here. Some of which was disproved years ago. Firstly just because something is calorie dense it doesn’t mean you will get fat. It is possible to have a small amount and it depends how many calories you burn. Next there is some really bad science around the whole saturated fats being bad for you idea which was disproved years ago. Look the bottom line is we need to move to a situation where we take responsibility for our own health and test things out ourselves. If you look on the internet or youtube you will find a million different suggestions for healthy living. Guess what there is no ONE way. We are all individual and just like medicines affect everyone differently so do foods. Hence you can find someone on a carnivore diet who cured some disease and someone else on a vegetable diet doing well. All I would say is a common thread would be stay away from processed food and sugar (by the way the standard American diet says some sugar is ok and drinks producers would have you think that their soda is part of a balanced diet). I found out by naturally eating in the evening and for a small time period I felt great an then discovered this has a name which is intermittent fasting. But my body told me this was good and I still experiment with different foods and time periods but I did lose 3 stone over a few years and feel great. Its a lifetime adventure but I think we need to move away from being lectured about health and we to take responsibility for how we feel and what works for us. Yes experts can give suggestions but the simple idea that a particular food like olive oil would be bad for everyone in every circumstance is really bad science and goes against years of experience and data on people who have used olive oil. Please lets be wise and not simplistic life is much more rich and complicated than this!
Dr. Greger! Thanks for this. At some point, could you address whether these studies on olive oil differentiate between using the olive oil in it’s raw extra virgin state, which as you suggested, might be protective due to it’s closer proximity to plants compared to refined products. Some people who teach about the volatility of oils under heat conditions argue that these extra virgin oils are volatile and not for cooking is because they contain chlorophyll, which is very heat sensitive and can take what could be neutral or less harmful than refined oils and transform it into a highly risky form. In these studies, as in many cultural cuisines, is there any differentiation? The meditteranean diet also seems like it might be more olive oil in it’s raw food form, whereas Italians might incorporate it a lot more into cooking etc, as a cultural norm. Curious to see if this has ever been empirically studied!
Life expectancy is much higher here in Spain than in other vegan countries like India. And that’s because we consume a bit of everything; meat, healthy fats, and vegetables.
Start from there instead of making a biased vegan propaganda video.
Olive mentioned in Holy Quran. This tree is blessed.
In Holy Quran:
Allah is the Light of the heavens and the earth. The example of His light is like a niche within which is a lamp, the lamp is within glass, the glass as if it were a pearly [white] star lit from [the oil of] a blessed olive tree, neither of the east nor of the west, whose oil would almost glow even if untouched by fire. Light upon light. Allah guides to His light whom He wills. And Allah presents examples for the people, and Allah is Knowing of all things.
Great lecture…Thanks and good luck with the new channel…… Instagram = mikewakethefoodup
This if confusing love oil one program says it’s good for you anther says it’s not? Confused.com
This video should be removed, what a load of trash. This quack is stating the macros of olive oil, as if that’s the only thing it does. Not everything is “calories”. Everything has calories so what’s this clowns point. The olive tree is called the tree of life, it’s benefits are tremendous and can prevent heart disease. If you are obese, of course this should be the focus, you have a plethora of issues to resolve. Olive oil is one of the most healthy things you could ever consume.
where’s you scientific references because I have found a bunch of research that says different. https://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2017/09/170912161025.htm

Fat doesn’t make you fat, excess calories with little or no exercise does. The thing you need to be careful about with olive oil is to not consume too much. Oils are still extremely high in calories since they are purely fat, so if you’re cutting or trying to lose weight, watching your oil consumption is imperative. They’re 800-900 calories per 100ml.
I never really understand what he is saying und would like to have alsways a short explanation for dummies and what I consequently should do or stop to do.:-)
Which better alternatives do we have please? Now that we are aware that Coconut oil and Olive oil are not good. Can you give us some suggestions please?
My high fat meal (with olive oil) is my big salad at Lunch. If there is no Olive oil on Salad, what do other people do make the Greens/spinach taste good? Does the vinegar mixed with oil negate the bad effects? Just curious if anyone has any ideas.
Thanks, great video. When you split a group in two, are there not many things that counts? What if 50% of them smoke? or other stuff?
Thats not sure EV olive oil is that unhealthy but i dont see how it would be better than EV canola oil since this oil contains much more omega 3 and less omega 6 and it is cheaper.
Im extremely underweight so i just drink 1/3 cup of olive oil each day for weight gaining
What about that oil that floats to the top of natural peanut butter?
Is olive oil good for you? Hoping this one sheds some light and ends the “oil wars” on social media!!
Thank you Dr. Mikael Klaper, you are a true doctor that heals people by looking for the causes and how to stop what is ailing us. I have been listening to your webinars for a few years now that have been posted, it has help me and family and friends, by passing on your name and what I have learned from you. You were the starting of my journey for a healthier life. Thank you for a quality life in my retirement years. God bless you for helping.
Cut out sugar, wheat and grains dude, and increase your fat to remove the look of the walking dead .
This speaker must understand that he should eat what he likes and enjoy without getting any stress, because he has’nt got much time left to leave this world on a OneWay Ticket.
People in this moderen time know good enough about food and about healthy food and they do care about their health and food too, offcourse there are always some exceptions, but where are no exceptions, a lot of people get killed on roads but it does’nt mean roads are not safe.
This speaker has very less information about The healthy life style of Mediterranean. Olive oil is the best people can consume.
There are two types refined and virgin(and extra virgin) olive oil.
Don’t buy the refined one.
I HAVE BEEN PLANT BASED FOR OVER 50 YEARS. EXPERIMENTING WITH RAW VEGETABLES, FRUTARIAN AND MACROBIOTICS. MY PERSONAL CONCLUSION IS COOKED WHOLE GRAINS ( & PASTA, ETC. ) VEGETABLES, SOME SALAD, BEANS, FRUIT AND SOME NUTS & SEEDS. I HAVE FOUND THAT OIL WHEN HEATED DESTROYS ITS INTEGRETY ( WHY DO WE WANT OUR OILS COLD-PRESSED…. THEN HEAT OR FRY WITH IT? ). ONE CAN TELL THE DIFFERENCE IN THE ODOR OF ONES ELIMINATIONS …. COOKED VS NON COOKED OIL. OIL IS NOT A ‘WHOLE FOOD’. IT IS A REFINED SUBSTANCE…. EXTRACTED FROM THE OLIVE, SEED OR NUT. WE NEED FATS, HOWEVER.
Love from india..!!
U r doing great job by putting information about gigantic myths, you are making this world a better place to live and u will definitely get your reward directly from that infinite consciousness…
I wonder whether Dr Steven Gundry has ever considered this. He claims to consume a liter of olive oil per week.
Save our Stuff…. throw out salt and you will get diseases like cancer…. throw out oils and switch to what…. vegetable trans oils… equals heart disease and throw out sugar for fructose and you will have diabetes…. Hummmm the biggest killers are heart disease, cancer and diabetes….
Why are people saying this specific video is vegan propaganda? I thought olive oil was vegan so how is this vegan propaganda? lol
When olive oil is not good then nuts are fats too can have same effect.
Someone please elaborate on perilla oil and arterial function. It’s the highest source of alpha linolenic acid so does it thin the blood or thicken the blood?
Dr.Gundry says the only reason to eat food is to get olive oil in your mouth. Your response to this & the lectin free diet would be greatly appreciated.thank you in advance.
This is why everyone should experiment on their own and run serum cholesterol test to determine the results over time. Heal thyself
grazie Dr. Klaper! i’d really love to know what do you think about drinking coffee. is that healthy or is it the opposite? i’m italian and love coffe a lot i drink it but i don’t know if it
is good for our health. thank you
Greece is not the fattest country of EU. And one of the least obese nation in EU is Italy with very high consumption of olive oil. https://bigthink.com/strange-maps/two-maps-and-one-graph-comparing-obesity-in-america-and-europe
I don’t believe what you say about olive oil. https://www.independent.co.uk/life-style/health-and-families/health-news/olive-oil-viagra-impotence-sex-life-men-performance-a8513936.html
When I gave up all oils, my cholesterol dropped 14 points. My primary oil was olive oil. Oh and my A1C dropped from 5.0 to 4.7.
Been trying to convince people like Mic the vegan of this for awhile. Some people just don’t care about being objective.
So glad you have a channel. Thank you for your time and hard work.
What is the best oil to use? I’m sure Dr. Gregor has a video on this, can someone point me to it? Thanks!
Endothelial function is not impaired by oil. What you are calling dysfunction is nothing more than the normal physiological response to eating fat. The arteries open wide after eating a high sugar candy bar meal. Does that mean that candy bars improve endothelial function? No it doesn’t. That opening of the arteries is the normal physiological response to eating high carb meals. The body is trying desperately to dump out as much glucose as possible since high levels are damaging to the body.
What is this? This is a joke…
This presentation is for 70+ retired women…
Hello: I’ve one (1) question…..i’ve done my ‘due diligence’ on an Extra Virgin Olive Oil. Its’ EVOO. I”ve the harvest date; and its’ location here in California. Harvest milling process, date, ectera. Question: Can I drink one(1) tablespoon/day5 days/week? Pls. advise. Thank you.
Idiot. Olive oil blows away canola oil, sunflower oil and all that industrial processed garbage. And what is wrong with consuming fat?
Given that Olive Oil is the most counterfeited oil in the world it should come as no surprise that certain results are negative. If you are going to use “studies” which are not necessarily equivalent to the hard facts of laboratory statistics and then imply with words like “perhaps” that when positive results are found that it may be due to the vegetable and fruit consumption then you should also specify that that is speculation. Speculation is arbitrary and not necessarily scientific. We could just as easily “speculate” that there are other still undiscovered substances in Olive Oil that make it favourable or not and that the result of that is accountable to things that the “studies” have not factored in as of yet. The facts are that there are “studies” conducted by intelligent and reputable scientists that contradict each other and that alone should give us cause to doubt and not take everything as unimpeachable truth. As long as there are outliers and statistical anomalies with these “studies” and presumably known “unknowns” then I err on the side of tradition. I personally believe that “genetics” and “ancestry” play a huge role in what is good for you or not and I doubt that these “studies” have taken that into account.
What a nuanced and educational video.
I totally agree that the debate over olive oil is…passionate, to say the least. But the irony is that in the grand scheme of things, EVOO is really just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to a healthy diet. It really plays a small role when you compare it to the other components of a healthy WFPB diet. It is really missing the forest for one tree.
And that really should be the take-home message right? Get the basics right first: fruits, veggies, legumes, nuts, seeds, and whole grains. If you’ve gotten those down, I will not dissuade my patients from using EVOO, unless they are using pints of it at time (there are a lot of Italians in my life, so this actually happens).
I personally think the process of making olive oil is very interesting, as many brands cut EVOO with things like canola oil and other vegetable oils, which we go over in a podcast: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/how-to-choose-your-olive-oil-ep-40/id1451308876?i=1000463243118
I would love to see how that plays a role in studies if your “extra virgin olive oil” is actually half canola oil too!
I personally use EVOO. But you know what? Sometimes I’ll saute in veggie stock. It depends on how I’m feeling that day. But in the end, the focus should be on getting the pillars of a WFPB down, because if that’s not in place, focusing on EVOO is really a moot point.
Awesome video!
Love the video, thanks Gil! But I never understand why using water in a pan is called „sauteing“ by the „plant based community “. It‘s still steaming and it tastes steamed. I cook exclusively plant-based as well but I don‘t want to give up on veggie oils. Might canola be a better choice concerning AGEs?
46 seconds and i had to stop. too much speaking in the mouth makes it hard to understand.
So when the f-k did anyone ever suggest to eat olive oil alone??? Of course you’re going to have olive oil with a green raw salad, with an acid( lemon, lime or cider vinegar). On would cancel out the other.
Super informative and entertaining. Thanks for sharing this critical message!
There’s some thing called common sense, and you need to start using it. For one, get clues from historical trends, and see that moderate amounts of good olive oil in a good balanced, diversified diet are not bad for you.
Secondly, try to understand how statistics works. Proving even an obvious statement can be extremely challenging. Conversely, there are several tools to make bogus facts look real to the unexperienced eye. Let’s make 2 examples to prove to you the following statements.
1. It took decades to ”prove” that cigarette smoking causes cancer. Why? because although any researcher or any person with common sense knows it, how do you prove it? How can you isolate a set of people, and subject them to only cigarette smoke? there are always other factors, and you can never say with 100% certainty that it is the cigarette smoke that caused that cancer. Even if it’s obvious. Statistics means gathering a bunch of data, making a model where you assume 1 or 2 or few more relevant factors, and run a regression. In reality of course, there are an infinity of factors. So it’s really really hard to prove things that are even completely obvious in front of you.
2. It’s very easy to make bogus correlation. One important principle of statistics is, statistics doesn’t mean jack sh it by itself. It doesn’t prove anything. It does not, at all, imply casuality. That is the first thing you will learn if you study statistics. Even if you find 2 factors have an almost 100% correlation, it does not mean they cause each other. One textbook example? The increase in divorce cases is almost perfectly negatively correlated with the decrease in murders in most given areas. So, by bogus anectodal thinking, you would conclude they must be related. But they are not. The reality is obvious, as we have progressed, we are not stuck into having to live forever with the same person… we have the choice of divorcing. On the other hand, increased welfare from our progress has lead to a general decrease in murder cases. However, as you can see, it is not that the divorce cases are directly related to the decrease in murders.. although the correlation function might suggest so.
One of the main lessons in statistics is that you must use your common sense. Some studies may show 99% correlation between two factors, and they really mean nothing. Others may show 5% correlation, and you may truly infer a 5% effect of one factor on another. By itself, a statistic means 0.
So needed! Can you do a separate video on gall bladder cleanses?
