I NEVER touch olive oil and for good reason and my Arteries are PERFECT!!! Over 70% of the olive oil you purchase in any store is adulterated with other omega 6 oils. You want real olive oil make it yourself or go to Italy. The Mafia controls the distribution and has tight controls on it. Using cheap oils as fillers means HUGE PROFITS for them!
I am confused. Some MDs advocate the positive effect of olive oil for interrupting plague formation, some against this! Science has no 1 truth? I planted olive tree to make virgin oil, and I could not do it as MDs said “any oil including but not limited to olive oil is harmful…”. Now Dr.Stefan says “no go ahead!”. And we are not talking of any organ but the main power house of the body-machine!

One question on my mind is how do black olives affect heart disease? That’s part of my diet.
Always remember when your buying anything, MAKE SURE you are buying THE RIGHT AND REAL stuff, there are lots of fake olive oils, and there are different grades of olive oil, extra virgin is the most healthy. Even with tea, I drink tea and buy tea online I have to make sure I’m buying REAL good qaulity whole LEAF tea, and not that dirt floor sweeping stuff in bags.
My point is if you don’t get the REAL high QAULITY stuff, then you aren’t getting any of the health benefits. And the real experience.

When I think about what olive oil actually is, I can’t believe that it’s healthy for the body. I’ve often thought the health benefits of the so-called Mediterranean diet must be down to the quantity of fruits and vegetables consumed rather than the olive oil.

That’s funny, almost all of the noteworthy plant based doctors do not recommend refined oils in the diet. Dr Macdougall, Dr. Fuhrman, Dr. Ornish, Dr. Essylstyn, Dr. Barnard, Dr. Klaper all recommend a whole plant based diet lower in fat with NO OIL!!! This may not be backed by scientific research.

Wow this conclusion has been highly criticized and with good reasons. Fish oils have such a beneficial effect on the body, it manages inflammation and is highly beneficial for your brain (managing ADD and preventing dementia). Just write omega 3 on pubmed and you’ll find hundred of studies showing the benefits.
I would be more convinced if there are scientific microscopic photos inside the arteries of someone with heart disease before consuming Olive oil and photos after 4-6 months of consuming Olive oil. Thanks

imho Oil goes straight into the bloodstream, we are not meant to use too much oil, which accumulates & causes heart issues -veg, hemp, olive, coconut, sesame etc
Same with eating animal products & dairy which are high in saturated fats and increases the bad cholesterol plus all the bad farming practices and hormones injected into these animals.
Eating leafy greens produces Nitric oxide, folate, enzymes, which protects and regulates blood flow without any blockages, also cleanses the blood vessels not the oilive oils.
I do not think having olive oil, even with monosaturated is healthy, also the fat remains around the gut area as with most men on bad diet (Italy, Greece or the USA)!!!

The main fatty acid in olive oil C18:1 (Oleic Acid a monounsatuarted fatty acid) And this varies according to climate where the olive tree grows. Most people are conditioned to think olive oil is the primary whole food fat (oil) of the so-called Mediterranean Diet. The reality is saturated fatty acids from dairy, salamis, meats, cheeses, etc comprise the greater percentages of fat(ty acids) over all. Most doctors and people FAIL to understand the ‘profile” of whole food fat meaning in terms is of the individual fatty acids. The notion Italians use so much olive oil is misguided; conveys lack of awareness the image of olive oil in all the pictures shown as the Med. Diet has conditioned people to think olive oil is THE primary fat ingested. Look and see… olive oil is ALWAYS the image blown up alongside the fruits and veggies. Cream, salami, and cheese should be the images replacing the olive oil with the olive oil in the background.

Mediteraen Diet is healthy, but you cannot draw the conclusion that olive oil is related to this only because it was part of the mediteranean diet. Neither can you mention fish as the reason. What about the abundant fresh veg and fruit typically available in the mediteranean?

This is one of the dumbest videos I ever watched in my life. Putting aside the fact there is no evidence that 7% saturated fat is a magic number that you must stay below, but the fact that olive oil is 14% saturated fat doesn’t mean shit since *you are not eating exclusively olive oil*. You can still put olive oil on your salad and have as little as 1% saturated fat in your diet if you are a vegetarian. You are not eating 2,500 calories a day in olive oil, but more like 200-300. Dumb. Dumb. Dumb. And what is the relevance of the blood getting fat after eating a high fat meal? That is NOT the same as arteriosclerosis.
Then, olive oil has been eaten since the Bronze Age, and yet heart attacks were extremely rare in areas where people eat lots of olive oil. What matters when it comes to heart disease are the types of fat and the ratios to other fats. The fats that clog the arteries are saturated fats. And they clog the arteries only when they are ingested in large amounts and without unsaturated fats to balance them. Olive oil is 14% saturated fat, true, but that doesn’t matter since 80% of the fat in it is oleic acid, which lowers blood cholesterol. Two tablespoons of olive oil will give you 1 gram of saturated fat, which is a really small amount, and it will come with 10 grams of heart-healthy oleic acid. Compare that to the fat in cow meat, which is 50% saturated and only 20% oleic acid. Again: amounts and ratios matter.

Hi doctor. I bought organic raw, unfiltered, first cold pressed extra virgin olive oil from Tunisia. I send a message them to know if their Oil comes from non-hybrid olives but they send me unclear respond.I put it in the fridge it got hardened, but I know most olive trees in Tunisia and in US are hybrid. I would like to know if the hybrid olive oil will harden if I put in the fridge. Thank you in advance. Unfortunately all vegetables, herbs and fruits are hybrid even organic ones. EX: I’m biracial and I know that i have a diet that’s very different from my husband due to him being full African American and him being male and I female. So there are many factors that have to play key in making “healthy food choices. Yes we are both healthy nut still can not have the same things due to me coming from an overweight family background and he doesn’t. Thats a factor that needed to mentioned to my doctor in order for them to make some “healthy” food adjustments.

Dr Gundry, your analogy fails because what it actually shows is that the chemical fabric protector does work to protect fabric. If you would have used an olive oil pump mister and sprayed the same fabric with olive oil and showed what that would do it might have been somewhat more analogous.

What the fuck? This is the same sort of analogy like pouring fat in the drain. It doesn’t represent the real world. Have a guess what happens to solid fats when you enclose it in your fist. It melts!

This nonsense about olive oil was started from a study done by Vogel. And it is true that depending on the fat and how much is consumed at a single meal AND what it’s consumed with the arteries do tighten up to some degree and restrict blood blow. However, with Omega three oil as when eating fish there was no restriction at all. Canola oil showed very little restriction with olive oil and saturated fat showing the most. And this has been confirmed by two follow up studies done by other researchers. But even Vogel’s researched showed that if various fats were eaten with any food that had antioxidants (any veggie) the effects disappeared regardless of the fat or amount consumed at a single meal (this shows us why the folks in the Med aren’t dropping like flies from heart disease). HOWEVER, no damage was shown to exist in the arteries. Any damage was assumed and never actually shown. It seems that the tightening is a normal physiological reaction to eating fat. Since fat in the blood stream doesn’t cause damage to the organs or arteries the body allows it to circulate in the blood stream for a greater length of time. That’s why fat is so satiating when consume with other macros, and eating almost no fat as some discovered after eating a white rice and veggies only are hungry a few hours later.. Since high levels of blood sugar from carbs is damaging to the arteries and organs the body tries it’s best to drop the blood sugar to a safe level as quickly as possible. And in it’s effort to do this the body EXPANDS the arteries. The higher the glycemic load of the food the more the arteries expand. Sugar and white flour products cause the greatest expansion of the arteries. It however doesn’t follow that as a result of a greater meditated flow of blood that sugar and white flour products are healthy any more than a temporary restriction of flow is unhealthy, or that it damages the arteries. But of course since Dr. Esselstyn has always been anti-oil it makes sense that he would jump on the bandwagon of any study that seems to confirm his bias. But science doesn’t back his opinion. And that’s all it is…..an opinion.
I thought I’d add in a bit that I forgot when I wrote this note originally. Way back in to 70’s Armstrong and his researchers showed reversal of heart disease in monkeys by feeding them both a low fat diet as well as a diet containing 40% of its calories from corn oil. The only difference was the level of reversal. The low fat group reversed by 25% while the 40% oils group reversed 20%. This study was repeated first by Wissler at the University of Chicago and Blankenhorn from the university of Southern Cal. a few years later. These studies were highlighted in Pritikin’s book. Sort of puts a halt to Dr. Essy’s claim that oils cause damage to the arteries. It would seem from every study done with oils including the dozens done on the Med diet that this just isn’t true.
I wonder: what brand of olive oil should we buy? I hear a lot of oils are loaded up with fillers.

You skipped a step there doctor. A Mediterranean diet has lots of fruits, vegetables and fish, as well as olive oil. So you need to account for that. Maybe the fruits, vegetables and fishes are what’s giving the health benefits.
I pour extra virgin on everything. Down from 200lbs to 90lbs, olive oil shuttles fat out of the body. Obviously junk food is junk food but quality food is Extra Virgin Olive Oil.

Drs. Caldwell Esselstyn, Lawrence Rudel, Robert Vogel, and Dean Ornish blew the “healthy olive oil” myth out of the water years ago.

And the reason is simple he speaks from the perspective of ‘adding oil’ to a meal. Take a salad, add oil, you get a salad with more calories. That’s indisputable. What he completely ignores is the fact that such a salad will be more filling, and the idea behind diets high in fat is that you should feel less hunger, and eat less as a result. If adding 100 kcal worth of fats to your diet will cause you to eat 200 kcal less of carbohydrates, it definitely can result in weight loss.
Now, I’m not advocating high-fat diets, since there are other ways to achieve a similar effect. Say, swapping carbs with high glycemic index for ones with low index, and adding fiber both result in more filling meals and less hunger. Still, I’m just pointing out the flaw of his argument.

Okay, this guy does not neccesarily say anything that isn’t true. He actually highlights a big issue. A lot of people have this weird idea that just because you add a “healthy” food to your meal, you’re now suddenly eating health. In that respect he is correct, all adding olive oil to your already high calorie meal will do is add calories, and if you’re already eating over your daily caloric expedenture, then yeah, that is the furthest thing you can do from an action that will help you lose weight.
HOWEVER, it is still innapropriate to suggest that olive oil in itself is not a health food. “Healthy” and “calorie dense” do not have to be synonymous. Monounsaturated fat is heart healthy. Olive oil is primarily monounsaturated fat. If you take a meal of chicken breast, veggies/salad, and then add 2-3 Tbsp of olive oil to it and don’t eat a high amount of refined carbohydrates/snacks/whatever in addition to that, I think you’d be quite crazy to try and tell me that you don’t have yourself a very healthy meal. I use olive oil religiously and I’m a competative wrestler, grappler, and Mixed Martial Arts athlete. I’d say my cardio is 10x better than the average persons, my blood markers are all great, and my levels of inflammation are pretty low. I lift weights and grappler daily and haven’t had a joint ache to speak of since eating this way.
That last bit is anecdotal, but there’s plenty of evidence to suggest that olvie oil, is indeed a healthy food. It’s just calorie dense. You need to still understand how much calories you are consuming if you’re going to have it as a regular part of your diet.

I recall a woman who fed her very large family of children steaks cooked in a black pan with about a half stick of butter on a daily basis. She’s over 100 years old now and none of the children have had heart or cardiovascular issues, to my knowledge.

Olive oil i disagree with, the rest i agree with though, you can make olive oil right in your kitchen by squeezing the olives, its one of the most healthiest oils out there along with coconut oil, it has alot of phyphenols in it which has alot of antioxidant properties, the oils that are the worst you can consume are vegetable oil (soybean oil), canola oil, corn oil, and cottonseed oil. Sunflower oil is a little bit healthier omega 6 fat because it has linoleic acid and the fact that it has vitamin E, unlike the other omega 6 oils, canola oil is highly toxic to humans because it has erucic acid in it which can harden your blood up. Animal fats are the best type of fat to eat because our bodies can use it for energy so quickly unlike plant or nut oil except for coconut oil because it has medium chain triglycerides which is quickly converted into energy in our body by producing ketones (along with animal fats). Palm oil is the only type of saturated fat that will cause heart disease (except for red palm oil because of it antioxidant properties) because its main type of saturated fat is palmtimic acid which is the only type of saturated fat that will cause heart disease because its a long chain fatty acid.

Hi people, as an answer to many questions im reading I will give my experience. in Spain we use to consume extra virgin olive oil, raw (not heated) daily, “picual” olive variety (which has the higest amount of poliphenols). The younger the best, if its posible buy an oil of this years harvest (if its almost Green is beter). the taste has to be a Little bitter and spicy. these are the best indicators.

I eat a plant based diet and I feel a life without olive or coconut oil would be a challenge for me. Props to those who can do it though! I just can’t see how organic cold pressed extra virgin olive oil can have such a contrast with olives in regards to health.
I love the benefits from polyphenols in olive oil, and I like that it’s a good combined with salads rich in fat soluble vitamins.
A tahini and lemon dressing without olive oil is a good stepping stone for an oil free approach though.
I have also learned you can get “stone pressed” olive oil. In this method there is absolutely no heat (not even from pressure), thus leaving you with pure olive oil taken from the olive. Well it gets oxidised, but combined with other foods and heavy physical training body should burn it eazy by eating 3kg of deffensive healthy food, so it wont get absorbed. But lazying all day body rots easier and negative effects are a lot more prone. Its bad but washing olive oil over your skin i ve seen claims it is good. What about coconut oil? I get stronger and more cognitive and better mental state from it, but i get pops on my face and hairfall, also eating it near a consumption of carbs or sugar I assume it gives me more negative faster catabolic processes on my body so the opposite. Also sweat from running kill all negative effects on my face and sitting infront the monitor my face gets bumpy and oily. I eat it on a slice of bread with himalayan salt in the morning or a 1/2tbsp in my coffe then lift and walk all workday.

Sorry but this is not true. Look at the evidence. The first article that was pictured was from 2000 and the other from 2007. Do your research, and I am not talking about google. I have found only positive results while searching for randomized controlled trials and meta analyses, which are the highest form of evidence.

I have the following remarks:
1. They served meals with 50 grams of oil in them for one person. When I use oil for frying veggies (mostly onions) I use about 5 grams of oil. The meal I cook is for four individuals and we have leftovers for the next day, so its actually for 8 persons. The 5 grams of oil I use only accounts for 5/8 of one gram per person. A little more than half a gram about 100 times less than the amount in the study. Used in this sparse amount I doubt that the effects are gigantic.
2. In the study only the Triglyceride levels are affected by the meals. But the study does not have a control group, so there is no measure of how much the triglycerides increase for people eating meals without oil. A serious study would compare with a control group this study only compares with other HIGH FAT meals. It would be interesting to see the effect from a normal plant based meal without oil or with the amount I use to cook in.
3. The study only has a population of 10 people. That is not a lot to base evidence from. A larger population would have produced a more conclusive result.
Disclaimer: I totally support the plant-based movement and I think it is very exiting that Dr. Esselstyn, McDougall and other likeminded are trying to get the truth about nutrition out in the open.
I see Esselstyn still disagrees with the numerous INDEPENDENT (as opposed to paid off by the sugar industry) scientific studies on olive oil and fat. Pretty stubborn man.
I used to believe olive oil was good for you too. I’ve been off it for a number of years now. This video led me to another conclusion. No Oil, is now my mantra. I’m careful to not tell others how to eat. I remember being so turned on to the benefits of olive oil and had a little booklet on it….I told my brother in law who was quite over weight and subject to heart disease too that I’d give him the booklet if he’d follow it and even if he didn’t eat anything with olive oil in it, he should take a couple tablespoons full every day. Now I’m ashamed of myself….He has since had a heart attack and a couple stent surgeries. I do my own research for me but can’t justify telling anyone else how to eat. I think I know but, can only know for me, for now. I’ll leave the proselytizing to the doctors. Now, I offer to send a link.

Any food or substance taken in large quantities becomes bad for you. Olive oil is incredibly healthy for your heart as its ingredients clean out your arteries of any build up of bad fats. I don’t think it’s a coincidence my African family (who use olive oil in everything) have immaculate health in general and never get sick were as my British family who use no oil or sunflower oil have bad heart health and are get ill very frequent. Of corse health is effected by your chosen diet and lifestyle as well, but Olive oil over centuries has been proven to be an amazing fat. Just like anything else, not in large quantities.

I think that is great information but I have one question for you.How can we influence meat and dairy eaters to give it up in favour of a plant based diet not only for health but environmental and ethical reasons? Why are we assuming a temporary decrease in blood flow is necessarily a bad thing. Maybe the oil has a relaxing effect…This study took place in 2000, and involved 10 people, that’s it. There many studies that show olive oil is good for you, in moderation. Basing your diet off of one study makes no sense at all, though the information is obviously worth considering. The core question is what in is the effect of the decrease in blood flow on the body?

First of all, does this study account for the rest of the diets excluding the dishes that involve olive oil in every test subject? Did they all eat olive oil in moderation? Did they track their physical activity or genetic predisposition to heart disease? None of this is recorded in the data, and this study is too broad to call fact.

The “meal” with olive oil seems to have been, as far as I can figure, three tablespoons of oil and 120 grams of bread (I don’t know how many slices that is).
This is why I hate “studies” like this. Is that a meal? Is that a typical amount of oil for a salad? Why would anyone do a “study” like this and not test 1 tablespoon of oil in a regular salad? And why would you add bread without testing its effect by itself? And what is “FMD”? What exactly are they measuring?

Oil (any oil) is not healthy. Its the most calorie dense processed food there is. 1 tbspn = 120 fat calories, nothing else, what is healthy about that? This was a really awesome video. Today I ordered six bottles of extra virgin olive oil from a one estate farm, called Moroccan Gold. I am pretty excited. I have not only high cholesterol, but also bad arthritis and diabetes. And I have been on a whole vegetable, high fiber and low red meat diet. I am only 51 years old, but I got really heavy… But I have lost 25 lbs so far. I’m excited because I’m hoping it will help me with all of these issues. I appreciate you posting this video. I read somewhere that’s it’s cooking with olive oil (i.e. eating heated oil) that’s bad for you.
But I dunno, I pretty much eat what I want. Salads everyday, plenty of pulses nuts and seeds, little bit of meat, don’t fry anything (you don’t need to just replace the saute part with simmer.) Works for me without racing off to the latest food fad all the time.

What is the source of the claim that says 98% of the Extra Virgin Olive Oil out there is not truly Extra Virgin?
Sine I knew that I have heart problem, I started using olive oil:)
I have olive oil on almost anything, even ice-cream. Not cereal though. Melted butter in the cereal.
So what do Americans pour olive oil all over? Dipping bread in it? Who does that? Salad is the only thing I can think of and then the truth is that a lot of people don’t even eat salad, and if they do, they buy a bottle of commercial salad dressing with canola oil and all kinds of chemicals in it. I readily agree that oils in general are not so good for us just as squeezing the juice out of fruit is no good for us since they are “isolates”. Eat everything whole, the WHOLE olive, the WHOLE
The olive oil i use comes straight from our coves in northern Jordan.. delicious and bitter, fresh, full of flavor like no other oil I had had from anywhere else in the world and super rich
there’s still no correlation here between olive oil and heart disease. this guy’s already been discredited.
Guys there isn’t a brand! The best olive oil producers are small producers in Greece, Spain, turkey, italy there the olive oil comes in limited amounts each season. If you want good Olive go to these places and why not go and do olive picking. Sometimes you can find some decent small brands on the internet but forget buying anything from the supermarket! Go for first press but also Cold PRESSED and pref organic
Will drinking your olive oil help clear up gunk already in your arteries or will it just help prevent more?

Wow this guy really hates Olive oil. Fast food joints are the leading cause of obesity and any help related issues. You would assume they would bathe their food in Olive oil the way this guy is presenting it. No they don’t cook with olive oil, and pouring a little on your salad isn’t making you fat, it’s other factors. So don’t all rush and pour your olive oil down the drain just yet. Ask yourself some obvious questions. One of these questions would be, how would vegetables and fruits undo all the harm that this guy claims olive oil can do and help the Greek live so long? Don’t you have lettuce and tomatoes in your burger? Shouldn’t that count the same?

Just find an extra virgin olive that’s not from the US and you should be fine.
But there have been studies that proved Olive had positive health benefits. The claim made in this video did not even specify how much Olive was given and what kind to the person before noticing negative health effects. I personally known individuals who have been using 2 to 3 tablespoons a day of extra virgin Olive for over 30 years straight and they are still healthy.

I have Bertolli. The only ingredient is olive oil. I don’t see any other oils included. Isn’t that saying something? It says it’s extra virgin.

Olive oil is a much healthier cooking fat and salad oil. If you sprinkle oil on top of butter, that does not make butter healthy!:)
