As you hit your stride, your body releases hormones called endorphins. Popular culture identifies these as the chemicals behind “runner’s high,” a short-lasting, deeply euphoric state following intense exercise. Surveys have revealed runner’s high to be rather rare, however, with a majority of athletes never experiencing it.
Chasing the Runner’s High The idea that exercise creates a huge endorphin rush entered popular culture soon after endorphins were discovered 40 years ago, says Matthews. “ Long-distance running was quite popular in the mid-1970s around the.Scientist state that endorphins are behind this ‘neurochemical state’ called the Runner High. Anthropologist David Raichlen, from the University of Southern California goes one step further and identifies the brain chemicals endocannabinoids as the crafty characters that contribute to the high. But recent studies in mice suggest that endorphins actually might not have anything to do with the runner’s high.
The problem with the endorphin explanation is that they’re very large molecules so large, in fact, that they can’t move from the blood into the brain. In addition to endorphins, new research has shown that endocannabinoids play a more significant role in achieving a runner’s high than previously thought. This chemical is a natural version of THC (yep, the marijuana kind of THC) that gives you a full-body buzz once you reach that feeling of euphoria. It pumps up your endorphins.
Physical activity helps bump up the production of your brain’s feel-good neurotransmitters, called endorphins. Although this function is often referred to as a runner’s high, a rousing game of tennis or a nature hike also can contribute to this same feeling. It’s meditation in motion.
Endorphins are not only the feel-good hormone then, but a natural pain reliever as well! Have you ever heard of the runner’s high? Named after runners because it takes long periods of physical activity to reach, a runner’s high reduces pain and anxiety while heightening euphoria.Nature’s home-brewed opiates, endorphins are chemicals that act a lot like their medically engineered counterpart, morphine. Runners have credited them for their feel-good effects for decades, but.
A small 2008 study found natural opioid production correlated with long-distance running (the runners ran for two hours!) and feelings of euphoria afterward. There may also be a release of other chemicals, called neurotransmitters, including norepinephrine, dopamine and serotonin that can increase feelings of euphoria, says Matthews. That feeling, known as a “runner’s high,” can be accompanied by a positive and energizing outlook on life.
Endorphins act as analgesics, which means they diminish the perception of pain. They also. The same endorphins that produce runner’s high also relieve stress and boost mood.
If the thought of these running-related maladies makes you want to toss your sneakers, you may want to reconsider.”‘Runner’s high’ is a phrase that we use to describe the feelings of psychological well-being that are associated quite often with long-duration, rhythmic-type exercise, and marathon running. While endorphins are often credited with producing that euphoric post-run feeling known as the runner’s high, recent research has identified many flaws in this hypothesis. A different class of molecules, called endocannabinoids, is now being considered as.Turns out endorphins are not the end-all-be-all of the happy feeling, and that the runner’s high you experience could in fact be, well, a marijuana-like high.
More: 73.Endorphins are primarily made in the hypothalamus and pituitary glands, though they may come from other parts of the body as well. The well-known “runner’s high” that is felt after length.

I had my first runners high yesterday it was my first time running 6 miles and I wanted under 60 minutes I had half a mile left to go and saw it was possible so I bolted all of a sudden my felt my body lighter my right foot wasn’t hurting anymore and my breathing was on point I I was going so fast sprinting and felt unstoppable it was great I got 60 minutes 19 seconds but at least the last mile was only a 6 second difference from the first one
Get out of my head! You put words to something I could not explain until now.
Nicely done!!
I told you, you have an ease @ speaking effortlessly, so don’t be lazy and keep making videos (That’s what I tell myself as well lol) I’m sure it only takes you 30min 1h to make and publish one.
You are an unapproachable person.
Because you run so much faster than everyone else.
I run and bike but running is by far the best. This video is poetry + great footage. Still dre as in OG:)))
I love it on a cool day in fall and running a decently fast 5 mile on shady hilly terrain. I forget that I’m running and just enjoy life.
In this Covid-19 age people have a lot of time on their hands, so I’m sure that there are a lot more people running. You can run and still practice social distancing even in big cities since there are less people aout and about. Less automobile traffic, and less pollution are added bonuses. I saw a video of somebody riding a bicycle through Central Park in NYC a few days ago, and there were so many runners. They outnumbered walkers by 3 to 1 it seemed like. It would be interesting to have a social distancing road race!
Great video, completely relatable. I feel like you truly encaptured the running high experience and the race for the high.
With the public it’s a catch 22. Running would make everyone happier, less anxious, less stressed, if they got into the habit of doing it, but to get into the habit of doing it they have to do it unwillingly for a while.
i used to love running but then something happened, i filled my life with unnecessary habits and became lazy. one day….
Cicirunner this is the best video and most motivational you ever made!!!! Awesome!!
Marijuana helps you achieve this while being sedentary and lazy. Running is truly natural and primal. But to me they are the exact same high.
Can you get a runners high if you try it for the first time?
You are like 4/5 hours north of me. I want to make a trip up to run with you. Awesome video man!
You definitely deserve more subscribers!!! Explanations are crystal clear! Keep going
Might be my imagination but the more fat I lose, the better my knees feel.I’ve gone carnivore and am certain I can stick with it so will lose the weight and please God,the inflammation.I’d rather go on one good run than 50 bike rides!
MAn this video was purely amazing!! the cnematic. images are great. You gave me goose bumps. Bravo sir. great movie. I am going to watch it one more time.
Thank you for this informative video, was great to learn a lot about runners high!:)
