I am curious as I have had this piriformis syndrome past month on right hop area.. if I should stop doing any hip exercises like squats, deadlifts, lunges etc till it heals? or are they separate issues and I can continue with those with light weights. I have 6 herniated discs.3 lumbar, and 3 cervical. C6/7 has been replaced. Eventually, my lower back will need surgery. Im a contractor, so im often seeking pain relief. I dont take pharmaceuticals, because they are addictive and dangerous for my trade. My personal choices are to take Kratom for pain relief, and ive stopped driving completely.I used to sit in my truck going to work, and sometimes even a short ride left me unable to move.I know everybody cant do this, but riding a bicycle every day has helped me tremendously! I can even pull a trailer now on my bike, with 200 lbs of tools! Everybody’s back issues are different, but maybe riding a bicycle could help you. Good luck!

My question is do I have to perform all workouts since I also struggle with knee pain too? I can’t get over how much your videos help me. I practice yoga relatively often and I’ve used your videos ALOT. The other day I was very ill. I wasn’t eating due to nausea and I passed out unconscious. I fell against a wall and landed in a pile. The fall caused me to hurt my back something crazy. Pain shooting down my legs and numbness and tingling in my toes. I was put on anti-inflammatories and muscle relaxers. It’s been getting better slowly with lots of stretches and basically being bound to laying on the floor. Last night I was wondering if you’d ever done specifically a sciatica yoga routine. Of course you had. Just like all my other weird yoga searches (yoga for depression anyone?! Adriene has a great one for that too!). I tried this routine this morning and although I still have pain, I feel so calm and relaxed and just… warm? I have immediately got more movement in my hips and leg. Your so welcoming and you make practicing yoga such an enjoyable thing for everyone. As I said, I’ve been a fan and I’ve used your routines a lot but you really do never fail to impress me. Thanks! I hadn’t experienced sciatic nerve pain up until three days ago. After two sleepless nights and continual throbbing generalised pain i decided it was time to look for some self-help. Gm i been searching so im gonna try you out my right side under my buttocks its like a pinch nerve it hurts but when i stretch it feels better you a few months ago i fell on my knee caps straight down on all fours didn’t feel it until later now my left knee is bigger than the other it swells up a little on top of my knees i can hear the grinding from the fall but im still walking thank God but sometimes i feel a little ugh so im going to try you you seem easy ( but while on the floor my daughter says get up off the floor its hard for me but it’s fine( her joke is i hope you can get up) it takes a min but I’m 54 and this didn’t start till.after i turned 50 years ugh

I came upon your videos while randomly searching for ideas to relieve sciatica pain that had developed from a lot of cycling. I had tried a lot of rolling and other stretches but wanted to let you know that I firmly believe that the modified pigeon stretch in this video was the cure for my issue. Just wanted to thank you
I doubt repeating these three postures will result in any meaningful improvement in sciatica. I’m a yoga teacher and the three postures described are all commonly done in a yoga practice. The problem is if you repeatedly do these 3 postures you will create other issues because your body will eventually become out of balance, as 2 of these postures are back extensions and only Cat/Cow somewhat counters the extensions. I’d recommend taking a yoga class where the focus is on heart opening (extensions) and you’ll be better off because yoga is based upon balancing your entire body. By the way, the posture where the model is on his belly is called Sphinx pose and where you position elbows relative to your shoulders is important and not described. Position your elbows under your shoulders and wrists in line with your elbows. If that’s too much for your low back, position your elbows forward. The model has his elbows behind his shoulders which is the most intense position. I would not start there given you really haven’t warmed up properly. Very importantly, and not mentioned, all extensions are supported by your core, so make sure that’s active. By the way, when he says the pose on the belly isn’t cobra pose in yoga, that’s true. But he says in cobra you are lifting from the back muscles. Really you are lifting from the core. Plus as soon as the model placed his palms on the ground next to his chest and lifted his chest, that is cobra in yoga. After you completed cobra or Sphinx do Child’s pose to counter the back extension— hands and knees with hands and shoulders stacked, hips over knees, rest your hips back to your heels and forehead to the ground. Avoid the poses on the belly in shoes. Better off doing all 3 barefoot.
If I do these and the pain stops will it come back later if I stop doing them?
is this good for the lower back to? and I would like to add that focusing on breathing for those 30 seconds because the muscle stretches most on the long and full exhale of normal breathing because it relaxes.

I have been having pain for more than a week now and I just wanted to try these stretches but in the moment I lied down and lifted up my leg, I got very dizzy. Had the same kind of dizziness couple of years ago when I was diagnosed with herniated disc in my neck. It gives me a lot of anxiety:(. Not even sure where to go with this pain/dizziness. I am not even sure if it is sciatica. Have the feeling that my entire spine is misaligned.

I’m only 19 and I’ve been having pain on my left side back and it goes down to the back of my thigh. It’s been a week and it hurts the most when I try to move while sleeping. I was wondering if I’m having sciatica and if it’s dangerous or not because I’m at a pretty young age. These stretches did relief my pain but I’m still kind of worried. Thank you!

Instant results!! I hurt myself at work lifting something heavy and twisting while bending down. My mobility hasn’t been the same since with deep pain mostly in left thigh. But I did these stretches for less than 15 mins and i felt much more normal than I have in a long time. I’m never ignoring stretching again thank you very much.

Back in June, I experienced unbearable pain in my tailbone area that increased with movement. It developed into sciatica. As the day went by, i felt as if a charley horse was developing in my leg. Nope. My sciatica became excruciatingly painful that put me into tears. After 2 days or so the same charley horse sensation developed in my other leg. I now suffer from sciatica in both my legs. Is this possible? Is this rare? I would like to know if what im experiencing is something different. Thanks!

I’ve just started with this momentary sharp pain which weakens my leg briefly behind my left femur/hip joint, so sciatic nerve it does seem. Only seems a problem when I rise in the morning, need to firm up my mattress, I do know. These pains now though are my fault, I took on a dancer’s exercise named ‘frog pose’ in a rather extreme fashion…. bad idea!!!! Anyhow, this set of exercises is so very gentle and relieving for me, thank you!

I have a constant sciatica in my left side due to a chronic spine condition. The first fold with bent leg is how I usually sleep as it’s the most comfortable. When I put pressure on the knee in the direction in which I twisted I could feel a good pain in my left glute (where the knot is always)….basically that felt amazing. I will always have some pain and sciatica but that has helped the annoying knot that I just couldn’t get to lessen. Thank you!
You said that forward bends are not good to do. What could we do instead? I occasionally like to do classes at studios so I am wondering what I could do when the group is doing that.
This was really nice but my lower back injury is preventing me from doing the pose where I sit upright with my legs all the way out in front. Even with two pillows I have to bend my right leg because to have it out straight is pulling something awful in my lower back. Can I do that sitting and to ning pose with one leg bent at the knee instead of out straight?

I am coming back to this regularly and it is awesome. The pressure I was feeling in my back is gone now and the pain in my leg is also gone and I am back at walking on my normal route which has some inclines. I was not able to do that for over a week with the pain I was having to stay on level ground to walk. I have always able to find a practice on your channel for any issue I have you are amazing. So I’m not the only one. I feel it in my lower back. I gained mine 4 years ago by squating a heavy bag 100 times. Recently aggravated the nerve rolling Jiu Jitsu an It’s a reality check for sure. I stay in shape and now I’m struggling to get out of bed let alone get in the gym or roll. Scares the piss out me.
I love this, but I have such terrible pain that I can’t sit on my butt with my legs straight on the floor like that. Any other way I can do it? Or just do it with my knees a little bent?

Well I am back today to say I should not have gone back to my normal walking route the past few days. My sciatic pain was gone but I am feeling the pain again. This short practice really relieves the pain. I will have to give my body more time and just walk on level ground for a while and keep doing this practice daily. I am 63 yrs old I was in a car accident on Dec 10th of 2018. At first I didn’t think I had any injuries but after a week I started having sciatica pain and it has just increased to the unbearable point. My job is a sit down job and sometimes the pain is so bad I don’t know what to do.. I am using essential oils I walk very slow and leaning forward due to the pain. My insurance stinks! I am overweight and today I did do what I could on your video. I will let you know how I feel tomorrow. I have to sit in a 3-4 hr meeting Tomorrow for one of my PCA boys that I work with. I want to say ty so so much was in severe pain for around 2 years easy maybe longer. One day woke up couldnt move called off work to start off 2019 and was tired of pain pills & patches. I have a question. In the pose where we drive our knee into the ground, we release when we exhale, I think. Would it be the same on the last pose when we are pressing our elbows into our knees? Would we press on the inhale and release on the exhale or press into the knee the whole time?
I lose some rest due to my low back pain. I like to rest on my side and this was tossing my hips out of position. Using this certain back pain guidebook. I could now sleep well once again now that my back ache is fully gone. Research this guidebook on Google, the tip name below.

Hi Brett, I firstly wanted to thank you for your superb videos! I am very new to yoga and unfortunately suffered an injury to my back left thigh during my 2nd local yoga class last night, sadly it was too advanced and fast for me and I’m sure I managed to do many things wrong! The pain was deep under my left glute’ (gluteus maximus I think!) and down my thigh at the back and top of my calf and in my achilles tendon. I thought this video would be a good place to start and it certainly has eased, however I’m left with an ache under my left shoulder blade. Have I done something incorrectly and if so how do I correct it please? Are there other gentle healing videos I should try? Thank you for the video! I was a little curious why you discourage taking forward folds. Of course, provoking the nerve is no good, but the movement does stretch the muscles that press on the nerve. At the moment, I cannot take forward folds without warming up through a yoga sequence, but once I’m warmed up, I can take them without pain. In this video, for that matter, I couldn’t fully take the seated stretch, so I adjusted, but I could take it while being warmed up.
I can’t straighten my left leg for most of these poses, as the pain is too severe. Do your legs need to be straight?

I tried this video a couple of times while seeing a chiropractor and meds from my doctor. I feel the stretching exercises gave me instant relief after the second time. Will be doing these exercises everyday for as long as I can.

First and foremost, if the muscles of the hamstrings are tight, coulc.it/painfix they are more susceptible to tearing. No matter if you’re an elite athlete, stay-at-home-mom or average Joe, a muscle tear in the back of your legs can take months to heal and recover from making life very challenging.

Having suffered from lower back pain and sciatica, from Gymnastics, for over 20 years these stretches have changed everything. My tailbone hurts when i sit too long. Right now, i undergo physiotheraphy treatment with laser, ultrasound and electrifying machines.

I’ve had back problems for 10 yrs, MVA, tried physio, didn’t help chiropractors did nothing, have some disc problems, but mostly soft tissue damage. So lately in a lot of pain, thought I blew out my hip, but turns out to be my muscles around hip, found out about Piriformis muscle and that’s the culprit. At the one minute mark, the figure “4”, I can do it but no way can I get my leg and knee to be close to 90 degrees, like you with your ankle closer to shoulder. It hurts my hip, don’t think I could ever bend that way, is that normal. There is hurt that feels good and a hurt that you know your hurting something. So if it won’t bend that way is thst fine. Then while doing more research, I think my gluteus medius is all tight too, could both be frigged up at same time? Thanks, great video. Would it help if I had my wife massage that area when I’m stretching? Also ice or heat?
I dont expect it to fix me instantly but I feel a lot better and loosened up after doing this and will probably be doing this again tomorrow. Anyways, thank you guys.

I would love to understand how to help the nerve mot be mad as I try to get stronger.: ) I want to get back to dumbbell lunges but that nerve says no. I will keep trying. Dear Dr Jo: I was in a traffic accident last Christmas and it left me in a bad condition. I could barely walk, had to take pain pills to sleep, poor vision on the left eye, libido gone, little control of the bladder etc, and I visited several doctors and physiotherapists, tried hot baths and massage and nothing helped. It was only after I started watching you and Bob & Brad and began weight training that my health problems disappeared.
Today I’m stronger and happier than before the accident and I also live a much healthier life. I really wish though that I could quit my office job and leave the city for the countryside where I’d work with my hands instead, because I’ve realized how unhealthy our modern life is. Thank you.

Thanks for this vid! I suffer from scoliosis and being away from my monthly treatments for 4 months due to covid, my hips are out of line and the sciatic nerve pain has been killing me. I’ve done some of these stretches before but never all of them and man o man, it makes a difference. I’ll probably put this into an at least weekly rotation in my home exercise. Really loosens up those muscles and bones so I can sit in my chair and do some work. Keep up the good work: )

Hello! Idk if you’ll see this comment or not, but wanted to let you know that these steps helped me a great deal. I have not been diagnosed with sciatica, but I do have lower back pain and sometimes feel numbness in my leg. I went to the doctor in and they prescribed ibuprofen and strong muscle relaxers. I don’t like taking meds, so I only took the muscle relaxants hoping they would work. In the meantime I looked up my symptoms and saw that it could be related to sciatica. I saw the videos for yoga and decided to try one and yours was the one I chose. I don’t know much about yoga at all but it seems to work! Thank you!

I’ve had sciatic pain for years. I’m 53 and I can’t walk a mile without limping in pain. I’ve always been in good shape. Biking forces me to use my muscles on both sides evenly but I am on my feet all day for my job (which is better than sitting for me) but I pray that my pain will go away if I do this video every day religiously. I haven’t heard of SI injections but I do see a chiropractor very regularly. There has to be some relief. It’s embarrassing and painful to limp every day.

The last pose was very painful for me on the right side but it overall the poses eased the pain to the point where I could walk a bit easier
I’m a teacher and after sitting at my desk, and after grading several classes’ papers my lower backis always in so much pain that I can barely walk/stand normal. I always walk bended like a very old person even though I’m just 29 years old:/. So looking forward to doing this after grading!
I am so thankful for this video. I have now done it daily for the last seven days. I have sharp, burning pain in my left leg and buttock. I am unable to stand straight or be mobile. I have been active until now with dog sports and am now a cripple. I will be unable to see anyone for diagnostic testing for at least two weeks. The doctors are too busy to see me sooner! I am a keen runner in my early 60’s and have been suffering with piriformis or sciatic issues for a while now. Watching and actioning this practice is undoubtedly easing the problem. But my issue in trying to follow the practice is I find it sore on my neck/shoulders trying to hold my legs up with the strap for a while. Am I doing something wrong or is it just because i am so unsupple??

I have no idea if I even have piliformis, but for the love of god, I can’t sit down on any surface for more than 5 minutes. I have consulted a doctor and he gave me some medicines, but it’s not working. My left buttcheek starts hueting the moment I sit down. Walking/ lying down is fine, but sitting/running/jumping just downright hurts. Please help.

I did a lot of work around the house yesterday, maybe it was the bookshelves that did it, I don’t know, but at the end of the day I was having trouble walking and my kids joked that I looked like Alistor Moody. I’m a marathon runner who suffers from sciatica and L5-S1 issues. My go to is always acupuncture but with being in Covid quarantine, the offices are closed. I do yoga but found my pain was getting worse with it. I googled ‘Yoga for back pain” and your videos came up. I am soooo glad. After just 2 days I went from barely moving to now finding some relief. Thank you so much for this video Adriene this was the first time that I felt a direct and immediate pain relief after doing something to relieve my lower back pain and twinges….and it feels b****y marveouls
One slight critique for the McKenzie stretch at the beginning, some people can only lie flat on the floor at the beginning. Maybe then they can raise themselves up on their elbows and hold that. Doing the full stretch upwards is not feasible for most people for the first few days and certainly not in the acute phase of sciatica when lying flat with some ice is advisable.
I have a very sedentary life and spend hours on the computer and phone so this has really helped!
I know this video is old, but I really appreciate the way you speak about pain in this video. I’m 24 and have had to deal with sciatica for the last 2 years of my life. Mine is caused from muscle spasms in my back, and even though I am one of the lucky ones in that I don’t have pain daily, I still get massive pain every time I sleep on a soft bed or work out too hard. I often feel so frustrated by my pain (so many people have told me that I’m too young to be in pain, which is such a horrible thing to hear) so hearing how you talk about pain in a positive manner really struck me. Thanks for posting this!

Love this back pain guideline! I had been a little unsure however used it yesterday and woke up with a more relaxed back. This amazing! Especially how you tell us how to get out of the position. I’m always so aware of how I come up from any laying or sitting position on the floor because I’m scared to hurt myself again. Spot on! I was injured at age 13 with a knee sprain and I’m now 24 and having multiple problems with my legs. I’m currently looking for answers but these exercises help me stretch since I’ve only been resting and they’re getting stiff. I hope I find the answers but for now, I need to stretch. This is lovely, thank you!!
great video, helped a lot. i will continue these amazing stretches as they provided immediate relief. Not full relief, but it’s better than it was. i’m sure continued exercise and diet routine i will be able to tackle this issue thanks to your video help.

For over 24 hours I had excruciating pain in my lower back. I barley got two hours sleep last night. I watched and did what is in the video and I am amazed. i think i have BOTH Sciatica and High Hamstring Tendinosis. So I don’t think I should be doing figure 4 hamstring stretch
I’ve been working out lately and I’ve been making sure I’m not doing damage to my back but my sciatica just snuck in and this really helped me. I love to work out but it was really hurting me. I just did this and I feel so good! Defkntelt gonna do it every morning and night!

I was in constant, crippling pain for YEARS before being diagnosed with lumbar stenosis. Thankfully I not only found a wonderful group of PT’s, I discovered YOU after they recommended yoga after I graduated PT. (I also found out along the way that I have cervical stenosis as well…which explained the stiffness, stinging pain, and one-sided headaches I’d been having!) You were the first recommendation here on YouTube, and I’ve found no need to go anywhere else. I’ve been seeing several articles about you in the news lately, and how people are discovering you. That you’re a refreshing gem in the mire of online tutorials. I’m glad I figured it out sooner. Don’t ever change, please. And thank you for helping me in my journey to get my life back.

I can’t even sit down without my lower back and leg going numb with that sharp shooting pain. Hope this helps.
