Loved this workout! Will switch the low intensity hour for this. First proper endorphin rush since I bought my bike
Makes sense. I can feel the strain on my knee with the recumbent as opposed to the upright.
I ran across this by accident. I just happen to have a recumbent bike I haven’t used in a couple of months. I bought the bike to help recover from hip surgery. After walking around in pain for a decade, I finally decided to get the recommended corrective surgery to fix a problem I acquired while on my second all expense paid ‘vacation to Iraq. I have always been in great shape, but I really went down hill doing the year of recovery from the surgery. After trying this for a couple of sets, I think this HIIT program can get me back to where I want to be.
So glad I found your video. I stumbled across it by accident, but I am so happy. I am now doing this with you. I don’t have the same bike. My bike works your arms and legs, but I am still following this
I just ordered a similar bike. I’m glad you said they’re a good choice because treadmills are so big and expensive, and tbh, I’ve gotten so out of shape that walking for long hurts my lower back.:( This is like taking a leisurely peddle around the park and out of nowhere a giant dog is chasing you. Haa I’m going to give it a go. Thanks for the great video.
I used to use your Elliptical HIIT workout while I was at the gym and loved it. Now that we’ve been under quarantine & social distancing, we workout more at home. Having bought a recumbent bike for a steal on FB marketplace, my desire is to maximize my usage on it. Imagine my pleasant surprise, Dr. Kevin, when I saw that you also have a HIIT workout on the recumbent bike!!!!! THANK YOU SO MUCH! This will definitely help me on my fitness journey.
Great video What RPM did you manage to achieve on average during the 30-second bursts.
Its a cardio. You must be sweating from head to toe I believe.
A truly exceptional video. Timers, coaching, inspirational speeches and intense music during the high intensity parts. I was dripping sweat and feel the positive energy in my body afterwards. Perfect workout on my lunch. Will definitely revisit this.
After knee replacement surgery which is better spin bike or air bike
I loved it!! I was able to do 6 sets with the help of fan. I’ll keep trying.
Good day! I’m Samantha.I did -10 lbs in 30 days.Open hddiet.gs\#Hey5
Very good video! Not 100% sure but appears some of my recent knee pain is related to recumbent bike, like implied in this video. Back to walking and less knee pain. I would say do what works best for you!
Done this video plus insane treadmill and insane no equipment needed. Like all of them. These are the best of all HIIT videos I looked at.
Does your heart rate gradually get higher even if you’re at a certain speed?
I love how he plays music during the hard parts. I wouldn’t be able to keep going otherwise.
Bought myself the right bike, a Kettler. Thanks for the info about the set up and the consequences.
Functions great is a great exercise bike, without the front handle bar i can watch TV, play a game, or use a tray table to use a laptop.
Quiet i can use this right next to the wife while watching TV, its practically silent.
here is the link to it in case anyone is interested:amzn.to\18pR1hP
My stairmaster and treadmills were closed so I did this instead. What a workout, thanks
This account of recumbent vs upright is so preposterous that it’s really potentially harmful. Virtually every point is either wrong or misrepresented. Balance ‘bents actually demand more of the rider for balance. Knee extension is the same on both types. Not involving upper body so much can be a plus; support of the back, not calling for hyperextension of the neck can make the recumbent the choice in many cases. I won’t go on. He may know knees but this guy knows nothing about bikes. IMHO.
Hi, I want to ask how many times a week should I do this to lose weight? Thank you
I’m 282. 36. Just started using a schwinn 201 stationary bike and love your video so far
Thank you soooo much for this vid. I hope you know how much this is helping me and motivating me.
It beginning workout for first timer especially for those never been workout
I switch the hit workouts between all three and it makes such a big difference for me! Do more please!!!!
Could I still do this Hiit recumbent bike workout if I’m trying to gain weight/bulk in the lower body? Or would it take away from my gains since it’s working the legs?
Dr. Kevin I enjoy this one too. And I worked out with out batteries and still feel it.
I have a recumbent bike and have been using it for 9 years now. I do HiiT occasionally but decided it’s time to do it right. I follow the 1:30 minute rest at resistance of 6 ( 8 mph) and then 30 seconds gonads to the wall with resistance of 9 at 23 mph. I did 8 sets, getting my heart rate up to 160 and then down below a 100. Total time was over 20 minutes. I’m 72 this year and in better shape then when in my 20s. I do the bike M-W-F and dead-lifts 2x weekly (stacking up from 160 to 230 lbs), also include a Total Gym workout. Thanks for the vid!
I like the tough music and lyrics during the high energy intervals!
Excellent workout! I was able to finish the routine. I’m preparing for L5 S1 surgery and this will be the bulk of my exercising pre and post. Great work!
I’m a mountain biker and I ride a recumbent at the gym for training for XC races. I had no idea I was “advanced.”
I always select Level 12-15 because it’s the only range where I can feel the resistance. LOL
My workout routine a bit different though. The LifeFitness bikes at my gym have the LCD display for “virtual rides,” so the resistance varies between 11-16 depending on the incline of the hill I’m on.
Also, I do intervals as follows:
1) I ride the first mile at a moderate pace to warm up. Start slow, gradually put more power down until I work up to the 50-60% effort range.
2) Starting at mile 2, I lean forward and grasps the handlebars (similar to the attack position on a mountain bike) and go 70-80% for the full mile. This usually lasts for a little over 2 minutes, depending on my pace. It’s brutal.
3) The next mile, I lean back to relax and reduce effort to 50-60% to recover. Usually about 5 minutes, depending on how punished I got the mile before.
4) I repeat this for a full 60 minutes, then use the 5 minute cool down period to round off to the nearest whole mile. I typically do about 17 miles in a 1 hr workout and burn a little over 700 calories.
Will this workout get the afterburn after it is long over? Will this also help you tone up your butt?
Thank you for this video. I have a different bike but I still use this work out. Thank you.
Watched this video and I’d like to try it. I have a cross trainer fan bike. Since the arms move, would I have to make any modifications to the workout? Any suggestions? Thanks in advance
Download the “Exercise Bike Workout” App, I use it to do this on my recumbent bike, with a big fan in front of me. The app keeps my time for me. Also I use the heart rate monitor on the bike to adjust resistance to stay in a safe zone. Only do this after you have ridden at a steady state for a few weeks if just starting. This is the bomb. I have back issues so the recumbent is the only thing that doesn’t hurt my lower back.
Nice video! I do 25 miles per day on my recumbant exercise bike (15 miles before work and 10 during lunch). I want to incorporate your HIIT exercise. What if I do your HIIT Monday, Wednesday and Friday or Saturday and do non intensive riding on my exercise bike on the other days?
P.S. I grew up in Lancaster, Ohio. I will have to look you up for some adjustments when I visit family down there.
Why is it recommended only a couple times a week? I do it a couple times a day.
I love this video and work out with it three days a week on my stationary bike. #5 and #8 no longer have sound,
can it be fixed to add sound again? I know there was sound when I first started using this video.
Wow insane!! Made it to the end
I usually bike but I wanted something more and came across your video. Amazing for only 20 mins
I am going to get one of these bikes for my mom coz she is having problems with her knees.
But after watching this I am tempted to get one for myself too!
It will be fun to have it as an option for my training routine. ♂️♀️
I enjoy this workout day two of doing this I love it really gets your heart pounding and a nice sweat I am down 2 pounds thank you
Thank you for your reply. We are talking generals here sir, not specific cases where a patient should be avoiding Neck hyperextension for example. And the Hip angle is terribly different on the ‘bent compared to upright, which changes the forces on the Knee dramatically. Thanks for helping out though, just careful with the criticism please. Potentially harmful? Preposterous?
Good thing I was sitting down. They were able to hoist me onto a wheelchair easier
Loving my bike>>> ur2.pl/1144. It was quite easy to assemble, no issues at all. I followed a YouTube video about assembling it and that helped a lot. Only small issue is that moving it around is a bit of a drag because you can only bend the bike to a certain angle to be able to move the bike around, which to me isn’t the best angle since i have to be constantly moving it. Wish the wheel was a bit larger or situated further back so one could bend it further out and make it easier to move around. Other than that, i have no issues.
How you lie do 30-minute lose weight workout on my Nordictrack bike and I sweat. But today, I was Dripping in sweat this was an amazing we’re so and I’m definitely going to do it 6 days a week thank you Doc. Have an amazing weekend guys and a good holiday sending love joy peace happiness and light
I don’t know who needs to hear this, but I started Dr Kevin’s recumbent bike HIIT Workout protocol around 270 days ago and I have literally lost 100 pounds.
It started with terrible allergies and knee pain that stopped me from running outside and as terrible as that was, I am thankful because I ran, but did I lose any meaningful weight? No.
Worst, even when I did lose weight, it was almost impossible to keep the weight off. With this HIIT protocol, I’m able to workout when I want in the comfort of my own home. Gone are the time and day “excuses” for “why” I couldn’t get in a workout because I can just get on the bike and have a little fun with it. Whether that’s 8 am or 11 pm, it does not matter with his technique.
Again, I don’t know who needs to hear this, but I wish you all the best because if I can do this, I KNOW YOU CAN. Godspeed and know, even as I write this, even now, I still REMAIN in disbelief! But truth is truth. GLTA
Thanks for this video Dr. Kevin!!! I’ve been doing this for a month and a half. At first I was doing this 3 times per week, rest at 3 RPM, MAX at 6 RPM. It was very hard initially…wasn’t controlling my breathing and I hadn’t started to change my eating habits. SO OUT OF SHAPE… Now things are getting better. Rest at 4-5 RPM, MAX 6-7 RPM. Averaging 3-4 days per week. I hope to post in 60 days with updates on weight lost, etc. This Takes Discipline Self-motivation, and Consistency
Can I do this workout and another 30min on the bike after this? I usually complete 20 to 25KM.
Thank you for stating the obvious, duh. You might as well have just said it encompasses your leg muscles. How stupid do you think we are that we need you to explain this?
Sorry to disagree. Try this simple experiment. Ride your upright for a couple of weeks and then do a hard workout on the recumbent. You’ll see that it is quite different the next day by which parts of your legs are sore.
easy on my joints!!! when i got up my legs felt wobbly lol love it. the guy next to me was like on min 20 and barely breaking a sweat.
Thank You… Great Video… Simple and to the point
I’m just do finishing this workout now!! It was great! Do you recommend doing two rounds of this? Like 40 minutes total? What about incorporating light weights during the breaks?
I don’t agree at all. ride an upright for a few months and the go on a good long recumbent ride and you’ll see your legs hurt in the back and at a different part of the calf up higher.
Stretch stretch stretch when you’re done. Elite athletes say if you don’t have time to stretch when finished, DON’T do the workout.
Hey Dr. Sarich, if I were to combine this workout with a leg workout, would you suggest before or after the ride?..or is combining a bad idea?..if so, when/how should I combine a leg workout (ie weights) if doing this program 3 times a week?..thx
Love it thank you. I work up the same amount of sweat as when I do moderate cardio for much longer. The problem is I’m addicted to this video (and the insane elliptical workout) and want to do them every day!!
Yeeeeeyeauhhhhhhhhh my bike is on its way so excited I order it in red I can’t wait it’s out for shipment
Thank you so much for this video. I just got a recumbent bike and I high diabetes and I wanted to do HIIT. Don’t stop with your videos because you never know who you are helping. I will update my progress.
I use this at my gym as it’s better for my back since I had surgery. My only issue is… I slip forward and am constantly slipping forward on the seat. What do I do? Bear in mind it’s at the gym and not my equipment. It has an adjustment to move the seat nearer or further but not to deep the actual seat. Any suggestions on how I can stick my butt to it are welcome?:D
Let me tell you something about knee pain. One size does not fit all when dealing with knees. For some any forward motion that puts pressure on knees is a trigger for pain. Such as going downstairs,. Leg press machines. and yes that forward pressure of pedaling a bike. Or even using an Elipitical machine. I do not understand why so many can’t figure that out. For those that can ride a bike that suffer knee problems. Well more power to them. Depending on the degree of problems with knees. Some are better off sticking to walking on flat surfaces preferably a trail. The bike pedaling may trigger tendinitis or problems in the knee cap area. We are all different when it comes to knee deterioration
Should I be concerned that your last song in the last 30 seconds is ‘The Funeral’! LOL! Great workout!
I am 100percent this dude never uses this machine in his workout but hes a good salesman
Il trying To loose weight… i started a few days ago by doing 30sec maximum speed then 30 sec rest and go on for about 15min. Is it good also?
I am very deconditioned with severe fibromyalgia and chronic fatigue syndrome so I am buying one of these recumbent models. (Esp with hip bursitis and daily ankle swell/pain) thanks for tips and mentioning it’s easy on joints!
why do people always want to sell shit? that don’t work $$$$$$$ just work out and sweat…that’s all it takes..
As if a recumbent bike is only for geriatric populations. Unfortunately this person (video) has very limited exposure to cycling. Both upright and recumbent bikes are excellent devices for moving and exercising the knees. His bias (geriatrics, people with balance disorders, etc) exposes his unfamiliarity with what he is addressing. I do worry that his `I know it all’ attitude will be persuasive with people who need help. Why do I know this? I have no physical disabilities or limitations and am a world class recumbent cyclist. I prefer the recumbent bike because: no saddle sore, no numb wrists, no neck or shoulder pain, no pounding of my vertebral column… and, if I have and accident I don’t risk breaking my neck.
if you dudes would like to get ripped a lot quicker without spending a one another minute in the gym, then you really want to check out this online video SIXPP.COMEddie saw great things and near misses. Albert Einstein as a child, not quite struck by a run-away milk-wagon as he crossed a street
I would like to do this everyday is bad for you as you mentioned max 3 times a week?
Thank you:)
This is a really good workout! Been doing it for 2 weeks now!

Wow, wow!…, just finished riding this with you.. I’m only 30 days in riding my incumbent bike… I actually made it through the workout and am so thrilled! It challenged me but was still attainable to get to the end. I feel like I just had my first REAL workout! Yay! Thank you,!
I like this for cardio because I can jump right in with no warmup. I crank it to 17 (max is 21) and go hard af for 15 minutes. I’m always sweaty, and hit 4.2-4.5 miles consistently, with gradual increases.

Can I switch off with your elliptical workout and this work out in the same week?
Love this workout. FYI, Sound is out on the 5th set. Timing seems to be slightly off for start times.
Wow! This is so helpful! I have started using exercise bike from today!
I am a new subscriber, the vídeos are great! I have gained weight after a knee surgery (4 years ago) and have chondromalacia in both knees, would you recommend this workout? Or maybe a variation? I usually can ride a bike but not for long. Thanks in advance for the answer.
What is this going to help you with? Like is it good for weight loss?
You confirmed what my Knee Specialist told me. Thanks much!
Hi Dr K,
Is the recumbent bike as good as an upright bike for HIIT benefits? (I find the upright bikes absolutely painful to sit on for long periods of time) but I do find cardio sprints the most beneficial HIIT for myself
Definitely, it is a better option than not exercising at all. You are using some part of your muscles in your body and burning some calories. Do everything moderately. If it hurts, stop and opt for a workout that suits your body. Simple as that.
I prefer this bike than the other stationery cycle because of the back support and the seat is more comfortable.
Replaced my upright with a recumbent. Best thing I ever did, terrific results and much more enjoyable to ride, which prodouces longer rides, using it more frequently and actually looking forward to using it.
Hello! I’m Michael.I did -45 lbs last 1 week.Go to agivura.io\#j7Ll
It’s hard to find good workout videos for recumbent bikes thanks for this!
Thank’s a lot for sharing your knowledge. I have a question, is this a good exercise to reduce cellulite? Considering that I eat healthy, drink a lot of water and have a normal weight
My local gym has recumbents and they’ve been great training for XC mountain bike racing. I do intervals on them, but I actually set my seat a little closer to the bars than normal so that I can lean forward with my head looking down at my knees during the periods of intense effort. This simulates the attack position on a mountain bike during hard sprints where riders get low to maximize power on the pedals and to increase aero efficiency.
The bikes my gym uses has a LCD display where I can go on “virtual rides” around various places in France. The resistance automatically changes depending on the incline. After a 1 mile warmup, I start alternating between 1 full mile at 70-80% effort, then a recover mile at 50-60%. I repeat this for the 1 hr workout duration set by the bike, followed by a short cool down segment where the bike automatically reduces resistance to beginner levels.
It’s a brutal workout especially on the quadriceps but it completely transformed my climbing game out on the trails.
I feel my legs giving out the most man, I don’t lose my breathe but I push super hard on 11 and my legs start burning so much at like 20 seconds
Can they hurt the knee joints in the long run if we push the resistence level too high???
This video is quite helpful. However, I want to let people know that there’s an economical solution now for increasing strength, mobility and balance when recovering from an injured knee joint. The best exercise device for knee, calve, quadriceps or hamstring strenghening is hands down: https://www.amazon.com/smithshaper. This SmithShaper Ab & Squat Roller Multi-Purpose Exerciser is compact, portable and even wearable for perfect posture rolling wall squats. It’s used indoors or outdoors for performing twenty-five different fully-body exercises. This includes three squat alternatives as an alternative for what’s discussed in this video. That is the strengthening of the critical leg muscles and tendons required for knee stability and improved range of motion for those with so called “bad knees.” I had an ACL surgery thirty years ago and back then, you were in a full leg cast for 6 months. This caused arthritis to start in my twenties. I’m now 58 years old but thanks to the amazon SmithShaper my legs are strong. I play competitive beach volleyball three times per week for three hours each outing and my “bad knee” is holding up quite well..
Add some light dumb bells and really get a good workout in for upper body.
Let me start by saying thank you for your guide to a recumbent bike indoor trainer. With that said let me post up a couple of guide lines from an actual recumbent trike rider, one who puts thousands… yes thousands of miles a season on his road machine. I have posted a link below on finding the best starting point for setting you “X frame” pedal distance up. You’ll have to fast forward through to the trike boom setup, or go ahead and watch the complete video if you like. I use this method on both my road trike and indoor recumbent trainer. Unfortunately the seat angle adjustment is not available on a good 98% of the indoor machines out there. IT SHOULD BE, as the seat angle and tilt of the base seat are vital to have for full comfort and full muscle use to get the watts on the road bed. Pedaling a recumbent in the correctly tilted and angled position is just as vital as the correct pedal distance. You can get more of your Quads, calf, and anterior shin muscles into the mix as well as a better core muscles input. Any how here’s the pedal distance set guide. Maybe some day some trainer design engineer will have actually owned and ridden a road recumbent & design a proper seat for a trainer!

Go ride, have fun!!!
Been riding for over 35 years, including 100k. With the venous return not having to work against gravity,my knees feel better after a recumbent ride, not to mention the comfy seated position,i’d say.
I love the inspirational commentary/music during the 30 second sprints. Where can I find that?
Promised an update…LOVED IT!!! Did it on a cross training stationary bike and it worked out fine. Loving this channel, especially that Dr.Kevin isn’t a yeller to motivate and gives clear cues. Thank you
Hey, thanks for this video and check out this 10 best recumbent bikes here
http://www.thefitnessmojo.com/best-recumbent-bike-2018-2019/
This is very helpful thanks. I had different thoughts about the recumbent bike I purchased mainly for my wife’s back injury, and thought that it was for slow biking for long periods of time and zoning out like I always see people doing at the gym. I did your workout and it was great! The inspirational sound clips during the intense portions was a fun and nice touch. There should be more recumbent workout videos. I may try to adapt some spinning videos. Cant wait for more sessions!
What if your overweight and haven’t ever worked out? I’d do good to last 10 minutes with no resistance. lol
