Ibuprofen use by endurance athletes does not affect performance, muscle damage or perceived soreness but it is associated with elevated indicators of inflammation and cell damage. It’s a reasonable assumption that using NSAIDs has no positive effect on sports performance. It may, in fact, cause a serious health risk in some endurance athletes.Taking non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDS) before a tough workout may lead to bad stomach irritation, according to a new study in the journal Medicine & Science in Sports & Exercise.“In a number of studies conducted both in the field and in human performance laboratories in recent years, NSAIDs did not lessen people’s perception of pain.
Effect of Aspirin and Ibuprofen on GI Permeability during Exercise. Ibuprofen Administration During Endurance Training Cancels Running-Distance-Dependent Adaptations Of Skeletal Muscle In Mice. Effects of Ibuprofen and Vicoprofen (R) on Physical Performance after Exercise-Induced Muscle Damage. Naproxen does not alter indices of muscle damage.Almost 60 percent of runners use non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) like ibuprofen.; Taking ibuprofen before a race has not been found to reduce muscle damage and pain. Even in runners, long-term use of ibuprofen can lead to heart disease, heart attacks, and strokes.
Wrong. Ibuprofen (Advil, for example) and other nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) are known to damage the lining of the gastrointestinal tract, which can result in bleeding and ulcers over time. Strenuous exercise itself can also harm the lining, at least in the short term. But a valuable new study joins growing evidence that ibuprofen and similar anti-inflammatory painkillers taken before a workout do not offer any benefit and may be causing disagreeable physical.
The literature is conflicting, but the general opinion in the research I can find implies that NSAIDs like ibuprofen are good analgesics for pain control after exercise, but may interfere with the.Ironically, fitness performance, post-workout soreness, and the subjects’ ratings of perceived exertion were not affected by taking ibuprofen – which means that A) ibuprofen did not help at all and B) ibuprofen caused greater inflammation and muscle damage.Ibuprofen Has No Positive Effect on Sports Performance and May Cause Harm If you compete in challenging sporting events, then chances are you’ve popped a few ibuprofen in your time. In fact, seven out of ten runners in the 100 mile Western States Endurance Run took them, as did 60% of Ironman competitors in Brazil.“Our data indicate that ibuprofen use has no effect on the rating of perceived exertion, race time, or muscle damage, and soreness in triathletes,” explains Nieman.
That’s likely because, during. Thus, it appears that single, non-toxic doses of aspirin do not affect running or cycling performance. But whether daily, continuous ingestion or higher doses produce different results is uncertain. More clinical research is needed to determine the effects of chronic aspirin ingestion on energy metabolism during sustained aerobic exercise.
Some athletes joke about taking “vitamin I,” or ibuprofen, to blunt the pain of strenuous training and competitions. Others rely on naproxen or other NSAIDs to.The aim of this study was to investigate in healthy male volunteers whether a concomitant use of NSAIDs (Ibuprofen or Diclofenac) and a single dose of testosterone enanthate would affect the excretion rate of TG and EG, and hence the T/E ratio, to the extent that it could affect the outcome of.Pretty much this is aspirin, ibuprofen, and naproxen.
NSAIDs help to relieve pain, reduce inflammation, and to some extent they can help lower a fever. Many athletes experience pain and inflammation often, so NSAIDs might seem like a good idea to help you push through the tough times.

i had alot of pain this moring had a head ache os i took like 4 200mg and kinda feel high…
I take Tylenol for my leg pain but still my feet are cold at night I wear socks but still get cold can’t sleep any suggestions
I used to take ibuprofen for everything, I started feeling head fog and became somewhat addicted. CBD became an option it helped clarity and for pain the topical cream worked wonders for my daughter and a nagging hamstring injury from track. I’m glad I found this company for Certified grade a CBD https://demme.greencompassglobal.com/
I’ve found Ibuprofen causes agitation. There are studies that confirm this. It does take away pain however. So, be aware of the ‘making you slightly irritated’ in attitude.
Dr. Chris looking at them while they are saying/doing their intro, and he thinks when they will be done cause he can’t hold this laugh anymore:D.. I really love the intro and the videos, subbed recently and watching any video adds to my knowledge, much love <3
Here in the UK doctors no longer prescribe Ibuprofen, there is a scare that long term use affects the stomach, kidneys, heart and bloods, they tend to prescribe Naproxen instead. You can however buy Ibuprofen in the chemists, low dosage only. I find that it works better than Naproxen.
I took ibuprofen and I started to get hives just on the face.
How come ibuprofen with or without food causes upset stomach in some people?
Wow..!! Hey I like you guys… But… That was almost an infomercial… Cooks Illustrated -&Consumer Reports… Let their readers know in the beginning that they do not accept advertising… Do you guys..?
Is Tylenol in the group. I’ve heard from other sources that it is an anti inflammatory? Especially if it says pain reliever too.
Can’t take those or naproxen. Can’t get a doctor to write medical marijuana card
Layne can u please make a video on dairy. Seeing more stuff pop up on igf increase and cancer.
Also dairy cholesterol link etc. Vegas are citing studies on one side meat eaters on the other. Wondering what your take on the body of literature is.
Totally confusing. Asprin IS an NSAID. Sounds like your saying Asprin will decrease the beneficial effects of Asprin. Then you say NSAID’ s cause problems, so instead reach for an NSAID.
Cant believe this information is coming from Mayo Clinic.
“For I was having a stroke or heart attack & did not know it, but this voice inside my head it was God telling me to go down to the dollar store and buy these pills I said what pills he said I’ll show you what pills to buy to take & he led me straight to ibuprofen on the shelf on the bottle it says take one or two a day, but the voice “God said first take 3 for that day, if it don’t help U next day take 4 that will help U, must take 4 of them a day each day for 4 days, then U will not have no more trouble or problems never after that with a stroke or heart attack, for “God saved my life, if I did not listen to “God I wouldn’t be here today! “For I owe my life to “God & his voice & the company that made ibuprofen, for this is based on a true honest 100% story that I have told “God bless U “Amen!
I don’t have it handy to check but, wasn’t one of the conclusions of that older study involving elderly subjects that ibuprofen likely did blunt muscle growth to some degree but that the use of ibuprofen supported better training consistency which, on balance, trumped hypertrophy inhibition?
This video dropped at the right time.. yesterday my doctor prescribed 1200mg for ten days due to shoulder joint inflammation. Now I’m not sure should I take it at all.. but my shoulder is killing me tho:/
Great, now i really don’t know what the hell to take now…i have imflamation in my left i..so what can i really take without messing up something else…please help P.S even if it’s something natural
i think ibuprophen can mask the sciatic symptoms so after 4 weeks I have only been taking it after a doctor appointment and using ice which helps the pain go away temporarily so far. i wish this video had addressed this situation. what do you think?
Geez, pharmacist and doctors really scrub each other‘s back‘s.
That’s great, but ibuprofen works for pain and Tylenol is worthless for pain. So I had a stroke, and take aspirin, and on occasion ibuprofen.
I was advised to take Ibuprofen when I had injured shoulder tendons but it no effect whatsoever, went through a variety of prescription drugs ending with high dose Endone but still not much help with pain. Finally in desperation I worked out 1/2 a bottle of neat rum did the trick, it either dulled the pain or knocked me out so I could sleep. I sort of count rum as a “natural” remedy not a drug. Your YouTube stuff is great, very informative, I love how you are “the most famous PTs on the Internet, in our opinion, of course” love it.
So if I’m a healthy 25yr old and take ice baths after a heavy leg dayam I possibly impeding muscle growth by lowering my levels of inflammation? Or is an ice bath going to work differently since it’s not something ingested?
one to two tablets of what strength? I’ve been taking one of the 600mg.
If you dont know what the drug is doing then how do you know it’s the drug that is increasing cardiovascular death?
“if it makes you feel better you take whatever you want” whatever you say dr.
This is super interesting! It explains what I’d usually do: only use it when needed (and get you in that moderate state) but leave it when I’m fine. (I’ll come back to this video when im old ) thnx for the video Layne!!
Thank you Bob, Brad, and Special guest Chris. Was prescribed Ibuprofen, after a tooth extraction. I’m scared.
The more I work on lab reports and read studies the more I understand that people don’t really get study design at all. Like, a study (or method) can have plenty of flaws but it doesn’t necessarily imply that the conclusions are invalid. In fact, they can offer insight to improve future work. Much like you’ve pointed out here that the combined data from all studies might shed light on what’s happening. If we had perfect study designs we would probably already know the answers. But you always see keyboard warriors complaining about some factor or another but it’s likely they’ve never actually undertaken any work in the field. Anyway, I digress. Great stuff as always Layne! Thank you:)
Please Ma’am tell me that why only aspirin is given to the heart patient.. and why not other NSAIDS use for that reason?? Pls ma’am tell me the exact reason…
so inflammation = healing. ibuprofen reduces inflamation therefore reduces healing. Correct or not?
All pain from the body comes from inflammation. Even if you break your arm what causes the extreme pain is the overall inflammation. NSAIDs are extremely problematic. I stick with aspirin because it is acetyl-salycilic acid and it its a NATURAL compound. It was used back in columbus’ time by the indigenous americans. BTW not every pain has to be immidiately done away with if you have pain obviously your body wants you to know theres something wrong
Plus afaik it is unknown what ibuprofen exactly does in the body and i am pretty sure they did not make long term studies with ibuprofen. so as far as i am concerned thats huge red flags. i mean you wouldnt take thalidomide because it makes you more relaxed and you sleep better??? Who knows what these things are doing long term plus who knows what they are metabolized into and what the metabolics do to the body
I remember seeing a study that claimed taking over-the-counter painkillers on a daily basis caused people to get headaches and other painful conditions, i.e. the body became dependent upon the meds./created an imbalance unless taken
lul y’all are probably the last I’d trust on medical advice.
I’m just lucky how well I tolerate Ibuprofen, it saved my life. I had such a bad inflammation in my chest and head I head cardiac arrithmia and loaded gun ready to pull the trigger. I couldn’t take it anymore! Ibuprofen saved my life. I change to different NSAInflamatories so I don’t get allergic to Ibuprofen. Aspirin,Naproxen, try Turmeric recommend by Wich docs nature freaks with limited results, try pineapple but too much Oxalate, so I change. I change because Ibuprofen is like a gold for me.
Was training age taken into account with any of these studies? It seems like that factor vs. untrained participants might influence the results.
In chronic elbow pains where cartilage damage is than better to get an MRI scan and surgery done other wise ibuprofen gel need to apply on elbows the pain can spread if one has tennis and gofers elbows and with cartilage or tissue damage that can spread pain up to wrists, shoulder, neck, brain feels like a brain injury or head injury, sleeping can be difficult, irritated, moodswings, ear popping, vision changes occur in serious cases, sugars, long term use of ibuprofen has side effects avoids caffeine drinks like tea, coffee, fizzy drinks, alcohol, acids, organic foods, organic veggie foods, fish with scales and bones is great, avoid fatty meats, take iron tablets with vitamins use turmeric in foods
i also was having blurry vision, went to evry specialist all told me my eyes fine.i as taking 6-8 ibu at a time 2-3x day on average.stopped and no more blurry vision
Ibuprofen has an increase risk of stroke and heart attack. What about that?
CNN just ran a story today that recent findings are that ibuprofen causes infertility in men.
why would you use Ibu on a daily basis? sending mixed messages. 7:44 Bob you hit the nail on the head about the healing cycle. Would look into arnica as long as you have no allergies.
I have been taking ibuprofen for the past 5 months for herniated disk pain and have recently realized that it has been actually making my pain worse causing muscle cramps and spasms, I switched to acetaminophen and realized twice now that the intense pain is gone and just 2 Tylenol every 6 hours is doing the trick now, how is this possible? Is this all in my head or can ibuprophen cause pain to be worse in certain situations?
I read that ibuprofen causes bone density loss. I used it for up to a week each month for bad cramps and now I have osteopenia. I also drank soda though not excessively.
I get migraine head aces I end having to take IBUPROFEN to get rid of them fast because they are bad I take 6 I have told my doctor this and he said that this is OK is that right.
Go Butler Bulldogs! I grew up about a mile from the Butler campus.:)
Ugh it’s help on my ear fluid ache, Should I stop taking ibuprofen?
Any drug ending with…fen causes my asthma to flare up.
Why do doctors miss out on that fact?
Ibuprofen has been recommended to stop uterine bleeding..like 600 mg during the day for prolonged period of time till ceasing. Isn’t that unsafe?
Would acetaminophen would possibly have the same kinds of effects? Thanks
Eating aspirin is not going to reverse heart disease like eating a low-caloric-density, high-nutrient diet.
Great video. This video helped interpreting studies, instead of just reading the conclusions of studies.
Ibuprofen withdrawal can cause tension headaches, the pain in the back of your neck for months after the last dose.
So we can NOT get pain killers and now you’re against NSAIDs how ridiculous. CARPEL TUNAL SUFFERER
Great video! Would like to watch more pharmacology lectures like this one!
My doctor told me to always drink lots of water when taking Ibuprofen flush the kidneys.
I stoped using it after taking it for pain using 6-8 a day for two years I feel 100% better with out taking it 2 months later I feel I was dying before feel I am healing from the toxic effect of the ib
people need to take the minimum effective dosage…. says it on the damn bottle…
For a long time I couldn’t take NSAIDS because of chronic dyspepsia. Fortunately thanks to modern medicine and doctors willing to prescribe off-label I have found a good treatment for the stomach pain. Now, NSAIDS are the best thing for my migraines. However caution is still needed. NSAIDS are responsible for my father-in-laws death. His doctor had warned him that he shouldn’t take NSAIDS due to anomalies with his blood tests for kidney function. He was told only to take prescription pain meds. He was afraid of pain meds because of all the hype about them and still would take OTC pain medicine. He went into kidney failure. Again he was still too afraid of prescription pain meds and would only take OTC. He had a massive gastric bleed. I was in the room with the GI doc told him not to EVER take an NSAID again. He said, “what will I take for my pain?” The doctor replied: “Something that wont kill you.” but it was too late. He never recovered.
Why on earth would your doctor tell you to take three or four pill instead of just writing you a prescription for some 800mg tablets?
Where is the Packers representation? Get that Viking football down
Ibuprofen killed my gma..stay away from it it will kill you!
I had spinal fusion surgery and lumbar discs completely removed and replaced with artificial bone material and was told post surgery not to take ibuprofen for at least 3 months as it would hinder my recovery and healing process.. thats major surgery healing let alone muscle hypertrophy, so clearly it effects the process negatively
I used to do ibuprofen even with the food and I can’t anymore because I get an upset stomach. So I’d take acetaminophen instead
Confused ?
Don’t take anything our body does not do Chemicals, as Humans we are extremely limited & ignorant and we can’t even do process Food without serious health risks to others ♀️♂️
.
Yes this pills can Fix Pain However most can cause death, don’t believe in Side effects either, Fruit, does has side effects is good for you, I don’t understand some medication is good for you however it can give you Cancer ♀️ or its good or its not good Period
Thanks a lot… I have been getting root canals I haven’t been to the dentist in ten years and the dentist told me to go a week without ibuprofen but I feel like breaking my head on the door! So I take 2 morning 2 at night now instead of 7 a day.. I been taking for 3 weeks straight now
Ibuprofen is it’s down side its toxicity can make one forget, best to boil 2 tea spoons of turmeric powder or get fresh root turmeric by boiling 2 spoons of powder in water and drink it once a day or make paste of turmeric with water spread around the affected area use a bandage,it can stay on the area for 2 to 3 days and renew the process until healing begins in joints any area it will bring the swelling down rapidly it has no side effects at all it’s a root and natural it works avoid acidic fruits, tea, coffee and sugars drink lots of water fatty foods like pork, lard, eat normal organic foods it also helps with arthritis, bone pains, swelling many other uses.
1 was living on them for 35 yrs with no probs, recently i started getting rebound headaches and my pressure was high.i stopped taking and everything normaal mow
Well I thought about listening to these guys till I saw that miserable lousy purple ugly Viking football. I couldn’t shut these guys off fast enough go Packers. Who by the way in the 2019 season they kick the Vikings ass both games.
Layne, can you do a video discussing that if money wasn’t an issue, what supplements you would recommend for someone to best support lean muscle mass gains?
You are DISSING CBD oil and RECOMMENDING NSAIDs????
NSAIDs can cause high blood pressure, kidney damage, severe allergic reactions, higher risk of heart attacks and stroke and gastrointestinal bleeding.
But make it your go to drug?
Just have a piece of toast?
According to WebMD
“Except for aspirin, all over-the-counter NSAIDs now must carry a warning about the risks of heart attack and stroke along with other side effects.”
…
“The most common side effect from all NSAIDs is damage to the gastrointestinal tract, which includes your esophagus, stomach, and small intestine. ** MORE THAN HALF (emphasis mine) of all bleeding ulcers are caused by NSAIDs, says gastroenterologist Byron Cryer, MD, a spokesperson for the American Gastroenterological Association.”
https://www.webmd.com/osteoarthritis/features/are-nsaids-safe-for-you
I was in a serious accident back in 1991, after a few weeks in the hospital the doctor put me on ibuprofen. I thought it was safe. I had total knee replacement in May 2018, I did not want to take the opioid medication, I went with ibuprofen. Bad idea. The past week, Jan 26th, I was hospitalized with a server GI Bleed. When the GI doctor finally showed up the first thing he asks me. “Do I take any of the NSAID or aspirin?” A. Yes! He took me off of both. The doctor in the hospital said they were seeing more and more GI bleeds even in young people 20 and up. I have been on a steady diet of ibuprofen for almost 27 years.
Thankyou for this video. With this information I have chosen to cease use. Great channel.
No positive effects or results whatsoever. I went from complaining of sciatic pain to complaining about stomach issues. I agree with the study that said it’s a placebo. I reach for prune juice instead. Lol. Healthy eating is my first medicine.
Ibuprofen inhibits the healing process. It blocks the COX 1, COX 2 enzymes and prostaglandins. It can also cause your joints to deteriorate.
How could I know what is the exact volume for me for each exercise..? And how many reps and sets I should do to recover better?:/ somebody can help?
Ibuprofen is addictive as hell.
i found this out the hard way. after using it for 7 years, off and on, i suddenly started getting withdrawal symptoms when i tried to stop using it. (joint pain, headaches, anxiety attacks, blood in bowel, night sweats, itchy skin, ringing in my ears, chest pain, breathing problems, and even depression.)
I found this out when i started keeping a chart of when i took it, and when the symptoms started. usually after about 14 days or so without it. I noticed i started having symptoms at that point, then they went away if i took even one pill.
Ibuprofen also causes wounds to heal slower because they cause the blood not to clot. I hurt my foot and the wound wouldnt seem to heal, after months of suffering, i related the slow heal to the ibuprofen. as soon as it was out of my system for about thirty days, the wound started to heal fast.
Ibuprofen also gave me a gluten allergy, which i never had before.
my advice: only take this stuff if you absolutely HAVE to and only in the smallest amounts! if possible find another more natural relief for your pain.
Ibuprofen was slowly killing me causing me chronic prostatitis and giving me headaches once I stopped using it all my problems cleared up stay away from it
I take 30-40 ibuprofen a day. I truly believe I am immune to its effects. No one will help my pain and I am a just taking the medication to try to belp. I gave fibro, severe neuropathy, arthritis, spinal issues. You named it. (No, I’m not diabetic.). I have lost 7 toes to neuropathy. I suffer from severe migraines. No effects have occurred. Some days I’ll take 30 at a time since I know I’m immune. Can you tell me why I’m immune to this? I’m also on Eliquis 5 mg, twice a day. Have you seen other patients with this immunity?
Informative video. One correction in your listing of ibuprofen names: Bufferin is not ibuprofen-it is aspirin, 325 mg, with buffering agents calcium and magnesium. Thanks.
To the geniuses who think she is clueless.. thats how modern medicine works in reality.. deal with it.. at least she is honest enough to admit it..
Responsible for 15% of Americans on Dialysis from Kidney damage.
The drs. here in GTA (toronto) often recommend otc tylenol, advil, etc. anti inflammatory diet is helpful, but suffering from osteoarthritis as I do, it is something I need on a daily basis. thank you for offering this talk, it is very informativde.
This is soo horribly SAD to listen to….Why do drs ONLY KNOW how to COVER UP Pain…??? I pray for all to research,, there are soo many b=natural ways to help w infamation.. CBD oil is powerful and OUR bodies need it in our system,, and the stem cell patch I have been using is beyond WORDS in healing.. relieving pain,.. almost immediate for most.. Please let me know if ud like more info.. Drs remedies always.> ALWAYS damage in the end..
In Australia we only sell 200mg of ibuprofen, and it’s HIGHLY regulated. It’s considered very safe so….
Asprin is a miracle anti-pain anti-inflammatory drug and it’s actually healthy for the heart and can reduce heart attacks.
My cynical view of the medical profession: don’t go into a panic about Ibuprofen. This stuff has been on the market since 1974 = 44 years. Suddenly, it’s a danger. Want to make a bet on something? Let’s bet that Big Pharma has a “new, improved and safer” product coming out (never mind all the warnings about it). The patent on Ibuprofen (et al) has run out, it’s dirt cheap, and they want to make a big killing on the new product.
One of my family member treated in top 4 hospitals for pain and 30-40 vomiting in day during periods. Suffered for 8 months.
Fed up with top hospitals treatment and after losing 20 kg during treatment with frequent drops from school.
I gave 200 mg Ibrufen 4 time a day for 3 days and she cured 100%.
Result against 3040 vomiting every day now for last 4 years not a single vomiting.
Now I am working on getting rid of ibrufen also.
Thanks big doctors of big hospitals.
This is so informative! Thank you so much, Bob and Brad xoxoxo
he is promoting quasi savety by using it almost daily. i think he lies
If you don’t like Ibuprofen just switch to Fentanyl, it’s stronger too….
I was taking it for lower back spasms, and after taking naproxen (another NSAID), I switched to Ibuprofen when my naproxen Rx ran out. It caused me to break out into a rash on my neck and scalp. The rash went away when I stopped taking it, although it took about a week. I have never had a problem with it before, but your body will tell you when you should not put certain things into it. I am not taking it again. You admit it causes GI bleeds, and you still take it all the time?
Ibuprofen inhibits prostaglandins, we need prostaglandins to heal, robbing peter to pay paul tho every illness is different. Do your due diligence,
So use of NSAIDs can increase the risk of having a heart attack or stroke by about 20-50%. The average male has a 1% chance of having a heart attack. Taking NSAIDs increases that to 1.5%?
I have a slightly torn tendon will this help my tendon heal? doctor prescribed meloxicam which is a NSAID 15mg
also a 1 year old hamstring issue seems like tendon
Heard you were no longer with Avatar. I’m sure you’ll talk about it when you can but what a bummer man!
Ibuprofen is a nonselective COX inhibitor. COX-2 specific inhibitors are drugs like celebrex and vioxx, etc. May want to correct this.
This is one of the most concisely stated videos on this subject I have ever seen. Also, amazing advice. Dosage is important in just about anything, I didn’t think it would be different on this subject, but you are the man for explaining. Danke!
I don’t know why, but it really helps me sleep. I don’t often have trouble sleeping but when I do, 1 or 2 Ibuprophens work very well.
I prefer to take Nurofen it seems to work better no Sid effects!
This drug will kill you! Do your research and find out how dangerous it is. It almost killed me because it created a peptic ulcer with no symptoms until one day it ruptured causing me to almost bleed to death. Please do your research and get the facts, it may save your life.
Any update on this 2 years later? What about Aleve Naproxen?
I have a friend who’s in his late 50s and runs marathons. He also has bad knees. His doctor has him take FOUR Advil before he runs. He says he couldn’t run without it.
What was the actual result? How much less development did the ibuprofen group get?
why is your volume so low! great content but please fix the mic. thanks.
YOU need to shut up the background blabbermouths, it’s killing the video.
it depends on when you take it. Ive experimented a great deal and found taking a low dose 3-4 hours before a workout and then having caffeine as well pre workout to have the best effects. Taking them after a workout seems to have negative effects. When I take the ibuprofen 3-4 hours pre workout it seems to leave my system by the time i am done with my workout and then my body has a rebound effect where it jacks up its inflammatory markers post workout increasing gains. it increases your bodies response to weight training if you can get the timing correct.
Blaha’s first vid?
Just joking man.
Keep up the knowledge flow!!
Please don’t recommend regular NSAID use in the elderly, especially those with diabetes. NSAIDs increase the risk of ischaemic heart disease and worsen heart failure, along with risk of gastric ulceration. I’m actually surprised they managed to get ethical approval to give elderly patients 1200mg of ibuprofen daily. Also the singular of nuclei is nucleus. Otherwise was an interesting update, thanks.
Subscribed. Right on topic, and explained well enough for what I was wondering. (Was wondering from the angle of recovering from pain Monday morning, 200 mg of Ibuprofen Monday morning, after a weekend of pushing the muscles.)
Update on my comment below..just found out and tried…L-LYSINE.. MSM and FISH OIL specially the first 2 almost instant anti inflamatories..not drugs..no side effects..check out videos here on YouTube they really really work incredibly fast…but if you also have pain then maybe a couple of abuprofin plus some L-Lysine or MSM… good luck
can you define inflammation in this context are you using tnf-a or just off il-6 or other cursors.
Check out the anti-inflammatory properties of invasive plants and weeds, or just drink green tea.
Bob’s reference to working out as “weight lifting” and when he said “when you lift” gets all my respect!
This video has really helped my understand some of the side-effects I’ve been having while “weightlifting”. I think the drug is messing with my gains as well as compromising my high blood pressure. I’m glad I came across it!
Hi Layne…I studied at FAU with Dr. Zourdos…Now here at Purdue working under Dr. Chad Carroll; this is a cool topic for me, as my current advisor did work at a previous institution on ibuprofen and acetaminophen on skeletal muscle adaptations in elderly individuals. There was actually some data to suggest NSAIDs could augment hypertrophy, at least in elderly individuals on a resistance training protocol.
That being said, there certainly is evidence from our current lab to suggest that long term ibuprofen usage could negatively affect tendon tissue.
Y does this guy always sound like his nose is being pinched as he talk highly irritating
I am only taking it for sciatica in order to be functional 400-600 bid. That and the McKenzie exercises
I feel like it effects people differently I’ve been taking 800mg for a year w bad shoulder pain I’m 46 been training since I was 16 so it’s paying a toll on me now but I just train in high volume now not trying to be strong and mass monster no more, so what in saying it didn’t seem to effect me nor the cut I just finished 260 to 160 lean, great video and this always crossed my mind for years awesome..
Thank you Vivian I’m Steve Rush with your local weather partly scattered showers and mild temperatures today with 40% chance of rain today…over to you Tim lol
Ibuprofen and other nsaids can cause leaky gut among many other things. Please don’t take them regularly and only use them when REALLY needed. Try a tsp of tumeric with a pinch of pepper in a PLANT based milk (almond, soy, oat, etc.) with a little bit of natutal sweetener (stevia, monk fruit, maple syrup, etc.).
So what you’re saying is, the answer’s always in the middle?
Great video. I myself stopped taking ibuprofen at around 800-1200mg/day over concerns that it could blunt muscle growth. A few points: 1) ibuprofen isn’t COX2 specific, it also hits COX1 hence the GI concerns with it 2) folks in the comments please don’t bitch about the dose go to CVS if you doubt how much ibuprofen is consumed in the US. 1200 or 1600mg or more is taken by HUGE numbers of individuals. Just look it up 3) the elderly piece is interesting. I’m a physician/lifter who works in inflammatory research on IL6. One thing that is noted is that individuals with elevated IL6 due to autoimmune disease (e.g. Rheumatoid arthritis) have artificially LOWERED lipid levels. This is a concern because cardiovascular disease is what kills RA patients at an increased incidence rate vs. normal population, yet if they have lowered LDL/HDL/trigs then what is going on? Well, it turns out that the inflammatory state drives lipid levels below normal in these patients while keeping them at increase risk for CV disease (this is referred to as the “lipid paradox”). We now know that lipids are only a part of the picture in reducing CVD risk. If you block IL6 in these patients, their lipids bump up, but their CVD risk goes down. So I do think that there could indeed be a “sweet spot” also in the elderly in general, who are likely hyper inflammatory where some NSAID exposure could help bring them back into a range where muscle growth could improve. Of course the elderly in general tend to suffer from muscle wasting generally with aging. So, bottom line for me, I’ll only take it if I really need to like during an injury, but it should also be noted that you need to be exposed to ibuprofen over a longer term in order for the full anti-inflammatory effects to be noted. If I recall correctly, this is at least for a few days. I wonder what the COX2 specifics do to muscle growth (celecoxib, etc), which BTW folks are also not the same class as ibuprofen/naproxen, which also hit COX1. Cool video. Thanks
BioLayne do NSAID’s have a negative effect on training adaptations?
Is this MD correct? Do NSAID’s cause cartilage degeneration? http://www.prolotherapyphoenix.com/pdf/Read-More-Osteoarthritis-and-Nonsteroidal-Anti-Inflammatory-Drugs.pdf
Can you make a video on how to breakdown a study and go beyond the abstract?
Ive got arthritis…my doctors told me to take them long term 1 in morning and 1 at night,200mg each dose…..is this safe to do…..I also go to the gym 4 times a week….
They need someone else as She doesn’t have a answer for anything
Cannabis is great for pain and healing. CBD, THC-A and THC are great natural way to treat pain and inflammation.
Always good timing on your videos. I have a pharmacology course right. Last year you released a how to study video and you talked a lot about your experience with organic chemistry and at that time I was taking that course too
Layne, is it true arachadonic acid could increase chances of cancer?
Layne, do you think this is limited to Ibuprofen? How about other inflammatories like Celebrex?
Great video. “each year more than 100,000 patients are hospitalized for NSAID-related GI complications alone….it has been reported that 16,500 persons die annually from these complications.” https://www.ajmc.com/journals/supplement/2013/a467_nov13_nsaid/. a467_nov13_fine_s267Fine, M., 2013. would something like supplementing curcumin (has anti-imflammatory properties) cause less muscle gains?
What pain medication can you take for the first 7 days of a painful injury,if you shouldn’t always take Ibupofen,no one can just tolerate extreme pain for 7 days!
So to sum it up for myself. Taking some ibuprofen for a sprain, strain or other acute injury is fine. Popping a few for a headache is fine. Don’t hammer them because I happen to be sore and try to figure out the cause of chronic low level pain instead of reaching for the advil.
I am currently enrolled in the Doctor of Pharmacy Pharm.D. Program in Calfornia. I would like to offer a few suggestions and clarifications regarding the information share in this video.
1. Aspirin is part of the NSAID family
2. Yes it is correct that combing aspirin 81 mg with other NSAIDs can diminish aspirin 81mg’s effect as a blood thinner, however, as long as a patient spaces out taking the medications then it is ok. We were taught by our professor to recommend the patient take the aspirin 81mg first then two hours later take other NSAIDs as needed for pain. If the patient takes the NSAIDs first then they have to wait for 8 hours before taking the aspirin 81mg.
3. Like the video stated, Tylenol would be ideal to use in patient who takes aspirin 81mg. If the patient is using over the counter pain killer for a joint pain, then naproxen can be used due to its anti-inflammatory properties.
I hope this is helpful.
Once in the blue moon when I can’t stand the inflammation any longer I take one, the relief lasts quite a while so I am thankful for them! I woke up a few days ago to an excruciating back pain where I never had pain, so off to the chiropractor and came back a bit better but still sitting sideways as it still hurts, back on tuesday, (friday today) and hope she can fix it!
amazing video. very clear and understandable. This was very useful for my pharmacology module on NSAIDs drugs:) thank you
What if I take it before running or swimming to get rid of cramps
You can take 800mg Ibuprofen for 2 weeks straight every 4-8hrs and you’re fine. As long as u don’t take it more then that ur fine……
As a vet student it’s so important to remember always everything you said in your video. Thank you
