I think over consumption of the wrong foods has led to metabolic disorder which in turn leads to more over consumption and so on.

Hi, currently reading Dr. Lustig’s book Fat Chance and am on the fiber section. However, Dr. Lustig mentioned that only insoluble fiber is correlated with insulin sensitivity and so psyllium supplements are out. But what about the actual psyllium fiber (not the pill) commonly sold in health stores? Are those okay for insulin sensitivity or is it the same thing as a pill?

Physicians have abandoned the nutritional approach to patient diagnostics and medicine.

The missing element here seems to be healthy fats. Fat provides the feeling of having eaten enough and prevents one from feeling hungry within just a few hours. See videos with Dr. Stephen Phinney for more info.NOT the stuff our ancestors never saw and we therefore are not evolved to eat (corn oil, canola oil, soy oil, etc) but animal fats from healthy animals raised naturally, and fats like olive oil (NOT for high temperature cooking), butter, cream, and coconut oil. Some claim that humans did not evolve to eat dairy products, but dairying has been around for a lot longer than anyone suspects. For fans of the Paleo diet, consider that the ‘stone age’ Masai of Africa lived only on meat, blood, and milk. Some northern people used reindeer milk. Yak butter in the Himalayas… mare’s milk for the Mongols… camel and sheep goat milk… It was a short step from nomadic people following the wild herds to becoming herders.
I’ve been monitoring my weight, body fat percentage and water percentage meticulously and keeping a record to help me stay focused and lose weight. I have reduced sugar and this has definitely helped.
I usually make my own food from scratch and I saw a reduction in my weight over time. I eliminated wheat and dairy and saw a further reduction still.
However, a strange thing happened… I craved some extra flavour for my food so I purchased some vegetable bouillon.
From there on things changed. I became addicted to the ‘umami’ hit and started to crave things containing MSG. I fell off my usual healthy diet and ate Doritos, cup soups and snacks and added stock flavouring to all my food. I ended up feeling hungrier and hungrier, but I wasn’t worried because I had increased my exercise routine at the same time.
I’ve just weighed myself and I’ve gained two and a half pounds of body fat in one week. I’m astonished!
I’ve researched MSG and weight gain on the web and I’m shocked to see the link mentioned in various articles. It seems people already know that MSG causes weight gain. Rats in labs are injected with MSG to make them gain weight.
Needless to say, I’ve thrown out all my flavour enhancers and I will stick to homemade food again. The food industry are responsible for the obesity epidemic and they know it. It’s not just sugar that is the enemy. If you want to lose weight you have to make your own food.
I am a Registered Nurse. For a long time I wondered why people were becoming so over weight/obese. Way back in about 2011, I came across Dr Lustig’s youtube presentation ‘Sugar the Bitter Truth’. I must have watched it about 6 times. Since then I have told anyone who has mentioned their concern regarding their difficulty in losing weight to watch it. I thought that once they understood what was really going on it might make standing by their eating choices easier.
A couple of years later I was impressed to find Dr Lustig was instrumental in having John Yudkin’s book ‘Pure White and Deadly’ republished. I recall reading it back in the 70’s but back then didn’t appreciate the information. It is so difficult to go against mainstream especially when you are in your 20’s. So here we are 40 years later with ‘Fat Chance’. All I can say is thank you Dr Lustig (and all you other researchers) for talking about the elephant in the room. It makes the lives of Health Care Professionals easier when there is good science to refer to. Thank you all.

Hey guys, The best success that my ma has ever had was when using Jims Simple System (just google it) It is the most helpful program out there.
Step 1: Added sugar section on the nutritional value label.
Step 2: Have a tax that is equivalent to the % of calories from added sugar in all products.
Soft drinks, sport drinks, energy drink, candy, fruit juices, etc. would be the most affected by this as price would nearly double. Other food that have a smaller % of added sugar like yogourt, cereals, bread, would have a small price raise.
It would encourage food compagnies to add less sugar.
It would discourage people from buying these products.
It would reduce carbohydrates intake and inscrease healty fat and protein intake.
It would push people towards natural food.
We also need to stop thinking that fat is bad,
Satiated, yes that’s the key. Sometimes I go beyond being satiated until I’m full. Then when I’m full, I become uncomfortable. I hate to waste food thought I get to the point to where the wasted food doesn’t matter. I’m really starting to understand where my limits are. It’s a good feeling to actually know when to quit. I start with a salad and end with meat and vegetables, all the while, remember I’m drinking water with every meal. That’s enough to get full really fast. It’s getting better and better though. This morning, I had a boiled egg and a Hebrew National beef link. At this point, 2 hours later, I’m still satisfied with that meal until lunch. I learned to cut my breakfast in half and it’s working. About those Keto snacks, I can’t get into dealing with those types of products. I like to keep my meals and snacks simple and inexpensive. As for Jillian Michael, I think she’s suspect. Unfortanetly we now live in a society where the citizens have to be protected from Big Company. We need govermental control. We need to check government better, a lot of them are getting paid against our interests.
The tactics of the Tobacco industry (‘smoking does not cause cancer’) are being used by other companies now to protect their product:
Food industry: denying sugar is bad.
Building company: denied asbestos is bad, now we know better
Big Oil: denying that antropogenic global warming is happening, that it isn’t due to fossil fuels;
Insecticide an herbicide producers: denying that their products cause a mass die off of beneficial insects, like honey bees, bees in general, etc… + denying that soil life is destroyed.
Knowing this I feel sick. I hate being controlled. BUT those companies should. If they do something wrong, they should take up responsibility. Same thing if I break the law, I get punished too. Why is it that they get away with it?

A person of normal weight can be TOFI (thin on the outside, fat on the inside). Sorry, a person’s weight on the scale is not evidence of health. Lustig’s research shows 40% of normal weight people have the same chronic metabolic diseases as 80% of obese people. If obesity is the cause of metabolic disease then what causes so many normal weight people to get sick? As the doctor said, “It’s not about obesity. It never was.” It’s not about who is fat, but who is sick. Lustig says obesity is often a marker for chronic metabolic disease NOT a cause. What is required is a paradigm shift in the way we think about health and disease doctors included. I think we’ve been getting backwards.

At 9:55 minute: Was it intentionally left out that about half of those so called ‘normal weight’ are overweight? What percentage of the overweight would come into the 40% of 70% part? I can say that it would be similar as with obese groups: majority of this right part of the oval would be filled with overweight and latently obese like South Asians whose metabolic problems start at lower BMI than among the rest of us. Let’s be real, guys.
I like what Lustig has to say. But apparently there is no evidence at all that giving children sugary foods causes hyperactivity in either normal children or children with “behavioral problems” (whatever that might be). It seems he is happy to perpetuate a known myth here. I don’t have any doubt that a chronic intake of excessive sugar is devastating to the human body. But Lustig hurts his credibility with the “bouncing off the walls” characterization.

I wish I could do 20g consistantly like you Violet. I would probably break under my plateau and lose my last 10 lbs. But I do eat too much sometimes because I love the taste of food. But my diet is basically high fat, moderate protein, and carbs around 50g or less.
I agree with the man and the science, but he lost me when he stated he wanted to pursue litigation against food companies as has been done against tobacco companies.
We don’t need another organization sticking their nose in the private lives of citizens. I am a low carb, whole food eater and have been eating this way for years. I don’t eat fruit or grain and only eat cruciferous vegetables and eat whatever meat I can fit in my budget. I don’t need Lustig to limit my food choices through litigation because he and his organization thinks they know what’s good for me.
I also disagree about his statement that all diets work, but only for two months. People need to find what works for them physically but also socially and emotionally. My diet works for me, variations of this and other diets will not work for me, but will work for others. Likewise, by his own argument, eating at his direction will also only work for two months if it is not the right diet for the person eating the food.
We may all have similar biology and the same nutritional needs. But we are all unique in other biological and certainly emotional ways.
Stick to research and let people decide for themselves what they want to eat. If they get fat and sick, that is something they must deal with in their own way. People need to want to be thin and healthy more than they want to find satisfaction and rewards in food. Until that changes you can publish all the science you want and sue as many food companies as you want, but lawsuits will not change individual behaviour. The people must want to be healthy for the sake of being healthy. Eating well has to feel as good as eating poorly.
Lawsuits will not make broccoli any more palatable to someone that does not want to eat it.
Government should ban or stop bringing fertilizer to the country so many sicking now because the chemicals

Omg thank u I finally found a doctor, I had ds surgery 6weeks ago. I have been a pescatarian for the past 6 years…the doctor and nutritionist has been pushing me to eat meat stating that I am lacking in protein even though I have told them on countless appts that I dont eat red meat or poultry.

I had a work colleague that every day ate for breakfast a Sumol orange or pineapple juice, a big cake and a butter and ham sandwich. On top of that he also would have his coffee sweetened with sugar. In mid morning a coffee with sugar. At lunch he would have his coffee with sugar on top of his meal of pasta and meat or potatoes and fish…..he was slim like, a little slimmer than you are, not much but a little. And he smoked 2 packs of cigarettes a day. Go figure it. Some people may have anything to eat that they just go fine, others, like you and me, they better watch out. Peace and love. Great video.

i had VSG in 2016 and lost around 90 lbs…and in the last 2 and half years I regained about 40 of that.. i was taught the same thing 65 gm protein a day minimum and less that 70 gm carbs ( even complex veg carbs). 10 days ago hubby and I switched to WFPB way of eating and its been amazing. my energy levels have boomed and my pain and inflammation levels and my sleep have really improved significantly… i really wish i had found this information early but im running with it now and thrilled

You can also get your potassium from “No Salt” salt substitute. I like to put a 1/2 tsp of that in a bottle of water with some lemon juice, and or apple cider vinegar and like 4 drops of liquid stevia and it tastes to me almost like lemon lime Gatorade.
i found keto harder than 16-18 hour fast. i fall off often for a sugary thing after i break my fast for something sweet. sugar is an addiction for sure but i keep working on it. i did a keto diet when i was a young men 25 years ago without knowing it was a keto diet. and frankly it was a breeze then. sugar is addictive like heroin. the more time you consume it the harder to ditch sugar
Excellent presentation, answered many of my nagging questions about the increasing obesity in America and my own difficulties with losing weight I especially appreciated the hypothetical description of what happens when you take a healthy and slender person (the MIT moderator) and pump her up with extra insulin, and I now understand better how the vicious cycle for many insulin resistant people begins almost a yo-yo effect of overeating to compensate for brain starvation mode, with the result of more fat storage and gaining weight thank you Dr. Lustig for your excellent work

You’re blowing my mind, Pat. The biggest loser pushes the calorie in/out theory. What you’re saying seems true, except that they do push carbs and dismiss the effects of grains, etc. Honestly, I think beer is no worse than bread, probably better, as it’s fermented.

Insulin isn’t a bad thing, necessarily, it’s anabolic.
But, we don’t want it to spike. Carbs from vegetables, or even low carb ice cream, do not spike insulin as would high glycemic index or high glycemic load foods. I’ve cream is easy to make at home. The sugar is optional. It’s otherwise keto. No chemicals.

Your space still feels some what ‘live’ it might be the context where your shooting which is seemly a standard corporate office. I had a work colleague that every day ate for breakfast a Sumol orange or pineapple juice, a big cake and a butter and ham sandwich. On top of that he also would have his coffee sweetened with sugar. In mid morning a coffee with sugar. At lunch he would have his coffee with sugar on top of his meal of pasta and meat or potatoes and fish…..he was slim like, a little slimmer than you are, not much but a little. And he smoked 2 packs of cigarettes a day. Go figure it. Some people may have anything to eat that they just go fine, others, like you and me, they better watch out. Peace and love. Great video.

i wish i had someone to help me i keep trying to eat cold foods like salad because i love it so much but since i have had fibro i just cant eat it with out such awful pain cramps and dirooreh, i have not been able to loose weight since my last child his 27 now, after the birth of both my girls i lost the weight, the strange thing about it,is with the girls my cravings were sugar i drank tons of fizzy pop which i dont like normally, 2 ltre tubs of ice cream in 2 days, mars bars honestly it was disgusting, but i only gained a couple of stones in weight,and lost it within months of having my girls.

cakes i eat home made with organic ingredients and then i only have a slice and i am done, even with fibro i struggle through the pain to work out 30 mins a day doing 2 /1 and recover within the minute rest period,so i cant be that un fit, you can feel all my ribs and hip bones most of my weight is front and thighs, and unlike a lot of women who gain weight i have small breasts, i also have brilliant skin for 57 yr old no crow feet no wrinkles on top lip no frown lines and the pinch test on the back of my hand skin goes back almost straight away,and you cant see the veins on the back of my hands like you can with most people of 57. so what the fucks going on.

My love of onions may be more carbs in a day but I love them and the flavor they add to food. I will never limit how much I use them. I think it evens out the days I don’t eat them. Just my opinion.
I’ve always thought this myself, that there’s no way she’s eating junk and just going by calorie count! Even if she’s not doing straight keto, I’m sure she’s at least low carb and clean eating. The other point I agree with is that she may have never had a bad weight problem and it’s into fitness, so if she’s maintaining and staying fit and not gorging on junk food and counting calories herself, it’s a very different situation than a person that has metabolic problems and it’s extremely overweight and needs to make drastic changes.

It’s 2019. I saw a news broadcast some months back that said Alzheimer’s was showing up in people in their late 40s and 50s. I think Dr. Lustig had it right! And he and other doctors on YouTube are still trying to get the word out. I have talked to any one of my family and friends that will listen about the dangers of sugar and processed foods!

I grew up in a large family single parent home. I was taught to appreciate food when I had it because my parent grew up with less so we had to eat everything on or plate regardless of whether it was healthy or not. We lived in survival mode all the time because if rice and corn is all we had thats what we ate. I was always overweight from eating carbs and sugar all my life. Im now 33. Now I’m teaching myself to appreciate food in a different way. Not eating tons of processed foods or little to none. I still have those days when I feel weighed down emotionally and I want to be comforted by food but now that I’ve been eating low carb I don’t feel the comfort anymore. The peach cobbler doesn’t give me that same experience as it did. I’m recognizing that my attachment to carby foods is in my head and thank goodness for your videos because I wanted to eat that cookie today but instead I asked myself what will this cookie do to me? It’s not going to help. I might be able to fit it in as a treat later but in that state of mind being emotionally driven I didn’t want to turn back to food as as a comfort. Are diet sweeteners real food? No way. Would you feed Diet Coke to your dog or cat? No way. I don’t have scientific evidence, but my gut says Splenda, aspartame, and Stevia are all bad for you. I’ve heard they jack up your insulin level in seconds even though blood glucose doesn’t go up. The elevated insulin will make you hungry.
