I cut out milk months ago, then dairy creamers, now ice cream, yogurt, and hopefully cheese soon. I have found non-dairy options to replace all of them I’ve been lactose intolerant my whole life and now my stomach feels better than ever.

This video really didn’t address the environmental impacts of our current level of meat consumption in a meaningful way. We are not only eating a lot more meat, but there are more and more people who want to eat that way. People just enjoy the taste of meat, I do too. but everyone is also starting to understand that our current level of meat consumption is unsustainable. We really all are guilty of that, and I like the humility demonstrated in the video. But no one should leave thinking this is something they can just shrug their shoulders. Animal agriculture is responsible for far far more relative impact than the 14.5% number at the beginning of the video, which doesn’t quantify indirect impact like deforestation and top soil erosion.

hi rawvana! I am into transitioning to veganism. but I cannot go cold turkey. I have tried twice before going vegan but had gotten sick because of the immediate cold turkey response. this time around, I am slowly cutting out certain foods. I am very impatient in being able to eat vegan and hoping in doing so, to have my BPD more under control in hopes of becoming vegan. I have heard how the right foods can help “cure” certain disorders for example. I am hoping to become healthy enough to not be so dependant on medication for the rest of my life. (and I’m 21!!!)

I know dairy or milk affects some but l drunk tons of milk as a kid, l didn’t eat much. Milk was lovely then. Cream on top. I have strong bones today at 75. I don’t drink much milk now, eat cream and butter.

I’m trying to remove dairy milk from my diet after 43 years. So far, hemp milk nearly made me vomit, nut milk I’m not keen on the aftertaste. The best of the milks I’ve tried really is the oat milk. Trouble is, I like my coffee but not sweet and the store purchased oat milk is too sweet but if I make my own in the blender I can’t get the taste or ratio right for me.
Any tips you can give to help wean off dairy on to the plant based milks?

My son have mild autism, and when we eliminated the dairy he was a completely different baby, no tantrums, no crying, digestion improved. However I believe the milk is not the problem, the problem is the pasteurization. My son drinks raw milk and his digestion improved significantly.

Some facts:
What kind of digestive systems do our closest relatives that are herbivores in the animal kingdom have?
Gorillas, chimps, orangutans and other monkeys who are mainly herbivores have what’s called a cecum. It is in their digestive tract, and it is used to extract protein from the plants they eat by fermentation. The cecum in humans has atrophied and is useless. That’s why we call it an appendix. So humans don’t have the ability to ferment plants very well to extract the protein like other primates do. If this is true, (and it is, look it up for yourself) then how are humans supposed to get enough protein?
Humans also have a highly acidic stomach. Our stomach pH is about 1.5. That’s for digesting meats. Most carnivores and scavenger animals have acidic stomachs with pH’s between 1 and 2.
Most herbivores have a higher normal stomach pH’s than humans, and all primates do too.
Human digestion is not designed for only digesting plants. If it was, our stomach pH would be higher.
84 percent of vegetarians and vegans go back to eating meat. Do 84 percent of meat eaters go back to a vegan diet?
If the human digestive system is like I described, and cannot extract enough nutrients to maintain muscle and overall health, you would expect to see vegans becoming sicker and sicker the longer they stayed on the vegan diet. The expected reason would be because since the human digestive tract cannot ferment vegetables like herbivores can without a functioning cecum, humans who only eat vegetables should lose muscle, lose weight and not look very good.
Do we see any of this in the hardcore vegan community?
Of course we do! It’s not very hard to find sickly looking vegans.
We also know vegans design some vegetables to look like meats to make them seem tastier.
Do meat eaters design meat to look like vegetables to make trick themselves into satisfying them?
One of the reasons vegans go back to eating meats is because of meat cravings. Do meat eaters go back to being vegan because of plant cravings? What are cravings telling somebody? Are meat cravings which vegans have not natural? Is mother nature stupid?
Since humans have digestive systems that have limited ability to ferment vegetables for nutrients, what is left that humans can eat? It’s pretty clear that the design of our digestive system is for eating meats.
Is their any anthropological evidence of humans eating meat in the past? YES! and it’s easy to find.
Is their any vegan societies that have lasted for hundreds of thousands of years, like their are meat eating societies?
Nope.
It’s pretty clear that meats have been a normal part of the human diet for hundreds of thousands of years.
Just look at our digestive system, our history, our biological cravings and common sense.

I took out dairy from my diet after more than two decades of having milk and cereal for breakfast (I’m 30) and noticed instant improvements. No more untimely stomach cramps, no more diarrheas, no more bloating, no more farts so gasesous that the US actually considered invading my ass, and clear skin as the bonus.

I also think food allergies or sensitivities can also keep people from pursuing a plant-based diet, as many of the most useful sources of protein (nuts, soy, other legumes) are some of the most common food allergies. Some types of grain (namely wheat) are also fairly common as allergies, and are abundant in plant-based diets. So for some (like myself), it is physically impossible to pursue a plant-based diet in a way that is safe for their health. I’m just going based off of what I know of food allergies in the US, if anyone has any experience or knowledge on the effects outside the US, I would love to know more!

Of a sudden I’ve developed a small bit of mucous buildup in my body in the mornings!?? I use a teaspoon of organic cream and even that small amount is causing my body to react. I’ve gotta figure out if anything else I’m eating is causing that! I’m 58 and pretty clean and I’m having this reaction.

I’m not ‘lactose-intolerant,’ and I used to be a ‘leche’-guzzler: I would sometimes easily go through up to three gallons of whole milk per month per one person (me). I became a nutrition expert some 17 years ago and I unbiasedly believe that there is all kinds of overwhelming evidence, sound indesputable research, and statistics that unequivocally demonstrates that meat and dairy, perhaps more so than any other foods are the leading causes of most types of cancer, heart disease, and strokes. They aren’t the ‘sole’ causes however fast foods, processed, foods, packaged foods, etc. are also empty calories’ that lack micronutrients and vitamins and phytochemicals which produce has in abundance and do damage to the body little by little over time which eventually leads to more serious maladies and health problems.
I still, admittedly to consume various forms of dairy here and there (milk, butter, cheese, etc.) but try to limit my intake as much as possible. Great tasting milk alternatives which I have quickly become used and have now utilized for many years are high quality (most often the “Silk” brand) coconut milk, almond milk, and soymilk. They have pretty much all the HEALTH BENEFITS of regular milk and none of the DRAWBACKS (cancer-causing properties, cholestrol, etc. etc.) of regular milk. “Soycream” (which is sometimes hard to find but is found in “Trader Joes”) is a very good alternative to regular icecream.

There’s no ‘need’ to buy meat alternatives. Yes, it’s easier if you have them but, many of the basics are allot cheaper than meat and dairy.
Removing dairy cleared my skin and helped my “IBS”, which was actually a symptom of greater digestion issues. Removing soy fixed most of my hormonal issues. Removing processed grains cleared my Candida and reoccurring yeast infections. Now on to treating my hypothyroid and iron deficiency! One step at a time

I had to go dairy free when I was breastfeeding. Milk caused blood in my baby’s stool and horrible cramps. As soon as I went dairy free I had less skin issues, less allergy issues and I noticed my digestive system functioned better. Plus it helped me shed the baby weight faster because it heavily limited the processed foods I could eat. Even the meats at KFC and Mc Donalds contain milk and no pizza for me.

Dairy is a heavenly drink. People in my country drink it a lot. They don’t interfere with the makeup of their food at least they didn’t a few generations ago. Science isn’t the only source of knowledge in the world. There are plenty of people who drink dairy and have lived to 100 or over. I will say though modern dairy in “developed” countries probably is no where near the quality of true natural dairy. I’ve drank dairy fresh and raw straight from the teat and immediately squeezed into a glass from a grass fed buffalo in a lonely isolated village and I have tasted nothing tastier in my life. Warm, fresh and sweet. The nourishment of that I find hard to describe. The taste I haven’t forgotten for maybe 17 years. I don’t know why people in the west complicate life so much. Health isn’t complicated. I’m totally surprised listening the reasons to avoid milk. Milk is very good healthy natural food for human. Only problem is the preserve using to reserve milk long time. Milk rottens so fast, it stays fresh only 2-3 hours in room temperature. But you can buy milk from any store says you can keep 3 months in refragerater. I have to stay away from almost all carbs. This reduces my choices of food. When I hear discussions about dairy, it’s almost always aimed at milk specifically, but milk and dairy are used interchangeably. For example, the lactose intolerance isn’t a problem with cheese since the lactose is used by the cultures that make the cheese. I don’t like milk but to completely eliminate a food group like dairy I would have to be able to justify it. Also, I realize that there are usually hormones and pesticides in dairy, but this is true of any animal protein. And pesticides are found in vegetables and fruits too. So using that argument would reasonably extend to animal products altogether and many vegetables. I have to choose my battles or there would be nothing left to eat. OK, no milk. But probably I’ll continue to eat other dairy products.

You do not need to buy speciality items to be healthy on a vegan diet. You should be having your 5-a-day of fruit and veg. You just need to sub your normal milk for blant-based and have beans, rice, peas, lentils, etc, etc. You don’t need fake meats or vegan cheeses.
If vegans took a stand with these kinds of facts instead of saying “You’re disgusting for eating animals” they would accomplish a lot more and more people would listen. I’m not vegan but I’m making my diet more plant based. I have done it in slow steps and the first one was to cut out dairy and as soon as I did that i dropped 5lbs in a week just from dairy and I stopped getting my normal stomach cramps and I was far less bloated. I’ve also reduced my portions of meat when I have it and go at least two days a week without any meat. Slowly getting there.

As a Vegan, I thought I would disagree with some arguments. However i completely agree that we should normalize reducing as much as possible instead of completely eradicating. That said I do think people with the means to do so, should put in more effort to be vegan or as close to vegan as they can to make up for the many people for whom veganism isn’t an option.

I am almost 17 years old and have been a pescatarian for almost a year. I have cut down my dairy intake by almost half and do not eat eggs unless they are in pastries and no vegan alternatives are available. As a child, I absolutely hated drinking milk and I have never broken or fractured any part of my body nor have I ever had any type of deficiency while my 11-year-old brother, who did drink milk all his early childhood, broke his arm a few years ago. I hope in a matter of a few months to go fully vegan.

Person who has grassfed livestock locally grown is much more sustainable for planet than majority of vegans who are living in cities that are biggest pollution sources. If you want to cover all nutritional needs you need to combine food from around the world which means lot of fuel used in transport. Majority of crops are sprayed with pesticides killing millions of insects (“care for animal life” side of story). People who are working on those fields are heavily exposed to all chemicals used. Majority of plant based foods, especially imported are packed in plastic. Abolishing animal food industry will create only temporarily results in CO2 emission because nobody is talking how food distribution is irational. Officially, average American waste 250 lbs of food each year, 60% of that is plant based. People think that they will save world just by switching to vegan bit keeping with decadent spendings and disparity with third world. Its not gonna happen. Just look at that khinoa price case and you will understand that its not about humanity but business.

I have tried veganism, vegetarianism, and everything in between. Today, I’m done trying to put myself in these labels. I call myself half a vegetarian. I do not buy anything with meat in it. I eat dairy, but I try not to buy as many animal products at restaurants, stores, fast food chains, etc. Occasionally, I will eat meat with my mother when she cooks family meals out of respect. I do not directly contribute any money to animal products except for cheese. Okay so 2 things real quick I need to get off my chest about vegans:
1. People tend to be vegan because they “appreciate life” and don’t want to kill animals. It’s ok if you don’t want to kill animals, but if you are vegan because you don’t want to collaborate on ending a life, you’re a hypocrite. Vegans do harm and kill plants, which are, if I remember correctly, living breathing fucking beings.
2. Those who are vegans collaborate on ruining the human’s natural diet. We are omnivores, we like it or not, and we need both meat and vegetables in order to have a healthy diet (also if you want to argue whether being homosexual, bisexual or transgender is also going against the human nature, this kind of sexual behaviors are regarded as universal throughout every mammal species we know, A.K.A. lions, horses and etc. have a mild chance of being homosexual, bisexual and/or transgender).
Just be an omnivore eat plants and meat the healthiest way to go.

There’s some flaws in this video. Some of the cheapest items at a grocery store are plant-based: Rice, beans, legumes, fruit, vegetables, bread, oats, peanut butter, etc. Part of the issue is educating people on how to be healthy and eat plant-based. As far as all or nothing veganism, it’s definitely true that no one’s perfect. Perfection in logic and morality is the goal. But in regard to meat and dairy, this industry is the leading contributor to animal abuse and a prominent affiliate in climate change, so it’s not a light issue. Many people take racism more seriously and more hardcore about it, but animals are sentient individuals too (and although this thinking is not status quo, people decades from now might look back with disgust at how okay we were with meat and dairy consumption. I eat a primarily vegan diet, but I am still struggling to cut out cheese. It’s hard because I know it’s super bad for me and sometimes makes me feel gross, but it’s still so delicious and in a lot of recipes I enjoy. I wish the vegan community would acknowledge how addictive some meat and dairy products are (especially the highly processed foods!) and it isn’t as simple as “stop eating”. Just like it isn’t simple to just “stop smoking”, or any other addiction one may have. Anyways, interesting video! Love the info as always:)

Restoring grassland by using animals is funded by big animal ag industry. They are not accounting for ch4 emissions and only reporting co2 captured by the pastures. grass fed or pasture raised beef emit net more ghg per pound beef not less.

I am currently doing research on marine macroalgae (Seaweed) as an alternate protein source for humans, I think we need to look at the sea for sustainable protein needs of the rapidly growing human population. I am strongly against industrial factory farming on reasons of Health and ethics but it is absurd to go vegan.

I’m surprised at the number of “thumbs down.” I’ve always had nothing but issues with dairy. Seems like a no brainer after putting it into perspective. Sure, there’s nutrients in it, but at what cost? I think it can sort of be addicting too which might be why some want to disagree because they just don’t want to give it up. That’s my guess. I love the elimination diet because you can really start to notice the problem foods and when I did this, a lot of issues disappeared including: digestive issues, acne, psoriasis, mood fluctuations, random inflammation/aches and pains throughout my body. Sometimes we just need to pay attention and notice the difference.

I went vegetarian in 1985, vegan in 1987. You made great points, though I think grassland for cows grazing needs to be repurposed while the excess cows are not bred in the first place. You said “less people” which should grammatically be “fewer people.” These alleged “Food deserts” need to be publicized so more good vegan food can become available there.
