Silly advice. Don’t eat any sugar. You can be healthy and have a cookie don’t worry.
Do you have any recommendations for substituting unsweetened applesauce for brown sugar? I’m trying to figure that out with a current recipe for cookies , i’m also trying to reduce the amount of butter but I’m worried about what it’s going to do to the overall outcome. I know applesauce can be used as a sub for both so I’m just trying to figure out the right ratios.
Thank you so much for this chart Gemma!! Very useful, especially since I’m really trying to cut back on my refined sugar intake. I’m going to print this out and hang it on the fridge…thank you!!!

Hi Joyous, I have just been diagnosed with candida and my ND said I need to cut sugar out of my diet. Although I am not a sweet tooth, I still find my choices suddenly feel limited as I go to the grocery store and find so many things contain processed sugar. She said that stevia, honey and agave are OK in small quantities. Can I use any of the sugars you have mentioned as well?
Which one has the least after taste I can not take the After taste

I’ve tried them all but xyitol I hope it taste like sugar bc the other sweetener are horrible
My husband and I eliminated sugar and within the first 2 weeks, we noticed how much inflammation disappeared from our bodies. It’s been amazing! Been looking into Monk Fruit and can’t wait to bake with it.
What’s the difference between Dr. Mona Vand and Vani Hari, im confused, are they the same person?
I just realized that I’ve not had sugar for months now. I use honey and coconut sugar when ever i need a sweetener.

These charts are helpful, thank you so much Gemma, can you elaborate on the notes segment at the bottom of your chart.
If I have 3 kinds of liquids in a recipe, do I decrease all three or just one of them? And is melted butter considered a liquid?
Will switching these out change the wetness/dryness of your recipe? Should I try to compensate for that with the other ingredients?
i’m a classically trained pastry chef, but have recently had to go gluten-free (medical reasons). i feel like i’m learning to bake all over again. i think my biggest challenge though is the dairy (also dairy-free). i would love a video on that please!
so you have kids and like me multiple.. how do you do their meals? how do you not mess up your progress when preparing or feeding your children? thank yoy sio much gemma I’m saved now I can bake and enjoy too yahooo
Thanks to this video, I have just tried my very first experiment baking with Stevia. I made raspberry clafoutis (which I have never made before). I replaced the volume of the sugar with sour cream. The result is just amazing! Thank you again Gemma.
My son is diabetic is there a sugar free syrup you recommend?
Agave (Agave americana) from which the sweetener is derived is a medicinal plant and should be treated as such; healing many internal discomforts. Also Tequila is derived from one variety. Maple is also medicinal and is my suggestion from these 5, I have also sweetened with a good apple juice.
Thank you so much for sharing these substitutes. I just have one worry: Will the differences in volume affect the recipes? Say I’m making a cake that calls for 2 cups of granulated sugar and I substitute the 2 tsps. of stevia. I’m then missing nearly 2 cups of ingredients. Will that make a difference in any way?
Are there any negative side effects on the gi system with monk fruit or stevia?
Great video, Lacey! Thanks so much for breaking these products down. I love pure maple syrup and raw honey. But I have never used coconut sugar so I will give that a go! And my agave syrup will no longer get used. I had no idea it could contribute to raising blood cholesterol levels!
A Big Request. Pls show how to make BUCKEYE CANDIES. Thanks:)

Can you do a how to make a perfect cupcake/cake? Every time I make a cupcake it turns out dry and dense and there’s nothing I can find to help fix that problem.
He Gemma. Great topic. I just had trouble replacing Maple sirup with sugar without adding another liquid. Therefore a question. The note about reducing liquid in the chart is meant to work for the 1-cup-replacement, right?
Gemma, what will the substitution be for brown sugar? Is it equivalent to white sugar?
Thanks so much for this valuable information. However, I am confused as I am now wondering if cane sugar, which I think is natural, is bad for our health.
Hi Gemma. Can u recommend some brands of Stevia as a substitute. I am from India and a bit confused as far as Stevia goes. There are several of them available on the net and for fragile health reasons don’t wish to choose the wrong one. Please advise. I really like your videos.Thank you so much and keep up the good work n God bless you.
I use stevia but that yacon syrup sounds wonderful. I already eat Lara bars which are sweetened by dates and are yummy!
Institute of Holistic Nutrition in Canada there is a Toronto and Vancouver campus. I’m not sure what to suggest for the U.S because I don’t think any of the programs are exactly like IHN.
what are your feelings about splenda and raw natural brown sugar? We tried Stevia for our family but could not get over the weird after taste. Any suggestions to overcome that?
I have a question.. you can use them for any recipes or not??. like if you want to bake cookies you need the texture of sugar or you can use any of this options..??. i hope you can understand my bad english haha… hugs from México
I find it odd that shes pronouncing every single word lol
Ive always liked her fast pace accent
She’s contradicting herself when she says artificial sweeteners aren’t good for you but yet she’s recommending the brand LAKANTO in the description box which have erythrol. I know she isn’t trustworthy! You should too.
Honey is the best for me and my Family. We use it for cooking and making out Tea and coffee Sweet.
We also use Honey with milk for baths.
Please don’t fear monger against sugar like all the syrup options you included are still sugar nonetheless with almost negligible amounts of nutrients or antioxidants that you probably shouldn’t rely on sugar as a source for. They are ALL processed so instead of buying some $20 coconut nectar, you’re probably better off buying $5 sugar in the raw and some greens to get like actual amounts of nutrients. As for chemical sweeteners, all reliable studies show that they’re only harmful in exorbitant doses that are practically impossible to meet eating normally, they’re still not healthy but it’s not healthy either to be scared of cane sugar and Diet Coke.
I love aunt j syrup but I’m trying to eat better I have tried monk fruit sugar I might go with the liquid stevia though
hy,i’n from Brazil,a goodhoney is easy to find, one doubt demerara sugar is good?
I know when it comes to healthy foods, this is a long shot… But would you consider making a video with tips for people who want to try these types of healthier products but may be on a lower budget? While it may be worth it health wise to pay more for these products, it’s not always attainable on every income.
I would also be interested in hearing you talk about some of the gluten free foods on the market right now. I have celiac disease and I’m just curious about how some of these ingredients like xanthan gum and starches might affect health? Thanks for your thoughts.
Thank you Gemma! I downloaded printed and pasted these charts on my fridge.
I tried a sample couple months ago of stevia zing. It was bitter
Recently, my family has been experimenting with erythritol & xylitol. The package says that erythritol is 2/3rds the sweetness of sugar. So far, I have used it the same as sugar in a few recipes, one of which was an angel food cake. I can tell though that it still not quite right. Do you have any suggestions?
STOP CALLING YOURSELF A DOCTOR!!! HAVING A PHARM.D. DOESN”T MEAN YOU INTRODUCE YOURSELF AS “Dr. Mona!”
Great informational video. Totally advocate sugar swaps. Like you I opt for healthy low GI swaps. Grated fruit peal also works in recipes
Ideas for monin caramel (any flavour
coffee syrup) swap? Sugar free like skinny cow and Jordans have an after taste…for me coconut sugar doesn’t do it, maple syrup is OK but only for cinnamon milk not coffee. Almond milk coffee changes taste profile. Skimmed milk coffee with cinnamon is sufficient but not for almond. Blended a date and fig to get sweetness sonetimes
This may be late but congrats on 1 Mil! Haven’t been here in a while but glad to see you are getting more popular.
can you please show how to make homemade savory taco shells
Wouldn’t substituting stevia in a recipe change the consistency or dryness of a cake?
Hi Gemma! I do have a question. When you say decrease liquid by 2-4 tsp or tbs, do you mean the additional liquid in the recipe. So for example: I’m making a cake and it calls for 1 c sugar and 6 tbs milk. I would use 3/4 c honey and 4 tbs milk correct? Also another example concerning stevia: I would substitute the 1c sugar for 1 tbs stevia but why am I adding in apple butter for bulk? What’s the bulk? I’m so sorry if I sound confusing. It’s because I’m confused lol. Thanks so much in advance and I absolutely love your channel.
I use Stevie the most..I like xylitol but I don’t like the laxative effect that it gives me.
I became diabetic just watching this sweet mama…Hot damn girl you’re fine…
Thanks for the video. I’ve got into a bit of baking since the lockdown and I’d like to make everything sugar free. I’ll need to get ordering online. Thanks again.
Hi Gemma, i am enjoying so much these series. Thanks for making them.
Patricia.
What abt store bought snacks? As opposed to baking and using the replacements. I have trouble when shopping bc I want sweets!
can you talk about why the cake some times has a eggy taste and how we can get rid of it
These are certainly true
Here are the top eight natural sweeteners and sugar alternatives:
1. Raw Honey
2. Stevia
3. Dates
4. Agave Syrup
5. Blackstrap Molasses
6. Coconut Sugar
7. Xylitol
8. Yacon Syrup
Gemma, some cakes like pound cake or cookie use the creaming method, ie mixing white sugar and butter until fluffy and that give a light but rich texture to the product. I wonder the liquid form sugar substitude can also be ‘creamed’ with butter?
hi thank you for the information. could you mention here the second option that you mentioned?
Great info!! This is the first video i watched of yours and its the only one that i needed to see to subscribe!!!
Thank you for helpful video.
Is maple syrup natural sugar?
How about Indian jaggery?
Does coconut sugar have a strong coconut taste because I don’t like it?
Please make a video on yogurts! There are a trillion out on the market and feel so overwhelmed when trying to find the healthiest option.
You’re gonna do the flour alternative chart I asked for!!!!! AWESOME! I’m gluten free so that’s gonna be such an amazing help!!!
thank you for this video made sense, already using raw honey and will be buying the coconut sugar, I already use coconut water in my smoothies depending on what I put in it and unsweetened coconut milk also, I have cut down on my buying of pre-processed products that include sugar as my doctor said i’m not far from being diabetic so it’s a must & with all my other health issues it’s viral, so ur video and a few other food health videos are a big help and given me a good luck up the arse to get sorted so thank you
You are exactly what I have been looking for… great inspiration. I was diagnosed with cirrhosis in March of last year and still do not know the exact cause. They are still searching for a possible underlying autoimmune disease. Immediately after being diagnosed with cirrhosis I took it upon myself to cut all processed foods and sugars and always looking for ideas and recipes. Most channels and sites are geared more towards vegetarian or gluten free. Keep it up!
My mom won’t let me have sugar In the house and I love to bake. This will really help! Can you do flour substitutes if it’s possible?
What type from that group if sugars you listed is good to make and bake a Red Velvet Cake???
I’m really confused about stevia now I’ve read both that it’s really bad for you and that it contains bad ingredients and other people said that it’s really good and that it’s 100 percent healthy??
Gemma, I’d love to see a video on Cremeux, I saw a bakery online that makes it really thick and uses it as frosting which sounds delicious.
That type of monk fruit is very processed and is mostly dextrose derived from corn. You can get pure monk fruit powder.
1) Raw Honey
2) Stevia
3) Dates
4) Agave Syrup
5) Blackstrap Molasses
6) Coconut Sugar
7) Xyliyol
8) Yacon Syrup
” baking is science but not rocket science” I love this line.
if your not a huge coconut person…..for the coconut sugar is it a strong taste?
These are going to be so handy . Thank you for all of these amazing and helpful tips!
Very helpful! I love coconut nectar and started replacing it in my tea, and it’s so yummy.
Hi gemma, if im making a cream cheese filling for a carrot cake that requires 980g of icing sugar how can i replace the sugar but still get the bulk…. As liquid substitues wont work, and stevia isnt enough quantity…. Many thanks
This video is AMAZING! Thanks so much for posting it! Never knew so many different types of sugar and sweetners existed. I’m obsessed with baking and love sweets, but really wanna become more healthier. So it’s great to know I’ll still be able to satisfy my sweet tooth and have the foods I love!
Incredibly helpful Dr mona I’ve heard of half of what you’ve mentioned I’m trying to be healthy and lose weight but the sugar cravings get the better of me. These suggestions I will be definitely trying. Changing diet and replacing these alternative would help in weight loss too? Xxx
In Sri Lanka, in addition to Coconut sugar we use Palm sugar as well and ‘sugar’ is referrd to “Jaggery”.
It is Pol Hakuru (Coconut jaggery) and Kithul Hakuru (Palm Jaggery).
Both kinds of jaggery are consumed in place of ‘so called’ refined sugar and ofcourse are much much healthier!
What about raw sugar. I’ve seen it in the grocery store in the baking isles. Would that be a good substitute? Can’t eat a lot of fruits because of the acidity and products which are acidic because my body can’t handle acidity well. I deal with Interstitial cystitis.
The best that I have tried is Xylitol (around $10.00 a bag) which measures and tastes like white sugar with no after taste like the many that I have previously tried. The granulars are a bit large so if you want, you can grind them into a finer powder. Great for diabetics like me!!
While artificial sweeteners are very controversial, this video is full of misinformation and claims not backed by scientific research.
i hope to see you make a bake from our Beautiful middle Eastern cuisine, which is baklava, how beautiful it is!!!
LOVE LOVE LOVE these ‘alternatives’ videos!! Thanks a lot!!
I can’t get on with Stevia, it leaves such an after taste which reminds me of artificial sweeteners. Keen to try Coconut sugar and Yucon Syrup
1 tea spoon of stevia is enough to replace a cup of sugar??
Why on Earth, if she is a doctor, didn’t she realize that Monk fruit has MALTODEXTRIN. GMO!
what about using different types of sugar for example if a recipe calls for white sugar can i use the same amount of brown instead?
The moment I heard the name “Ireland” it made me remind of the movie “P.S. I LOVE YOU”:D
Can you substitute brown sugar for regular sugar or….not a good idea?
Hi! New to your channel and love your videos:)
I was curious, what exactly is cane sugar and what makes it unhealthy? I know people say the sugar in the raw brand is better for you or “healthy,” but what is it that makes it bad?
look at the cautions for XYLITOL: It states you should not feed it to animals…. If dogs shouldn’t eat it, should we? Think about it
am first Tim watching these all sweetener.except of dates honey and white sugar. and I think these are not available in Pakistan.
hi that was really and intresting and am going to try some of them thank u so much
Love it! I have gone 4 months without processed sugars and felt awesome!:)I do eat fruits, maple syrup and honey in moderation. I love the way I feel and definitely have lost weight and feel so much happier with my life

They got it very wrong on honey, it’s 50% fructose which enters your bloodstream directly and messes you up just like sugar if not worse
I am 20 years old. I weight 113 kg. Could there be any possibility that I would lose weight without loss-weight skin??? Please I need help.
Please do not quote Govt Agencies when providing healthy food information. Most of them are infiltrated by food industry people. They are the ones who recommended trans fats in the past and still recommend vegetable oils (Corn and Soya) over health alternatives.
Hi there! It all depends on how restrictive your candida cleanse is because any sugars no matter the form (good or refined) will feed candida even fruit. However, the anti-candida diet can be extremely difficult to follow. If you are really committed, then stick to stevia.:)
For those wanting a fructose free alternative dextrose is great. I use it at 1:1 ratio and have rarely had a problem.
please tell me what type of schooling you had to take to become a holistic nutritionist I would love to become one also I am 47 years old but I am very interested in nutrition. I love you and all of your videos thank you for taking the time to make them. Also can you list any schools in the states that might offer it. Thank you.
