I have been using a pair of North Face hiking pants, zipper shorts. Just retired them this year. The zipper broke. They gave me 10 years of hard use. To date, I have found nothing better in terms of longevity. I like the look of the Prana…….they need cargo pockets. I’m going to look into a pair
Good review. I have trouble finding clothes that fit too. I often get them altered. Take Care and Keep Exploring The Outdoors.
These are definitely the best work pants I’ve ever owned.
I buy the non convertible insulated ones for winter. Super light and warm. $15 Canadian at Costco.
They are pretty rugged. I do rebar, so always climbing/bending and lifting.
These pants (unlike jeans sometimes) wont get your balls all twisted while performing acrobatics.
Great review. I will have to check out those pants. Awesome ✌️
Great energy, video quality and b-roll on this Matty! Love it! I actually just found these on amazon and remembered you had just released a review. Thanks for this! I have a pair of Costco convertible pants and they’re so baggy!
Think I’ll buy!
I love all the pockets on there. I really love the two belt system!! Cool video guys
Will have to check these out, hiking pants are usually so expensive. Good review.
Interesting……never heard of them. Sounds like a good deal. I have been using the same pair of NorthFace convertible pants for 10 years now. No joke. They have gone on almost every trip I have been on in 10 years. They are starting to fail now. I don’t think they will make it through this next season. The timing is right for me to see this video. I will be looking into these. They look legit. Thanks for the share guys!
I second the inconsistency in sizing. I purchased a pair of these pants maybe two years ago in an ongoing search for a favorite all around pant and they have become my absolute go to! This mostly has to do with the comfort and fit. I have ordered three more pair online and they were all about 2 inches longer and a much looser fit. With a fairly high price tag, Prana needs to get their s#%t together.
Sizing is getting worse too. I’m pretty thin, and even the 28 waist is too big for me now. I measure 31 and have owner 28 inch waists from prana before and they fit tighter. Fit is great if the waist fits you. I second them not actually breathing very well.
These are what I use as well. My latest pair I found for $9 but it’s an ugly color but oh well.
I have 4 pair of Prana Zion and I prefer them over the Brion for the pocket arrangement; some pockets have zippers also. And I love the fact that the legs roll up mid leg high and snap in place for a shallow water crossing. I agree that sizing is inconsistent, for that kind of pricing that’s a huge letdown. You really have to try on every pair before you pay. Other pants I use are some I did not expect to like. They’re the Wrangler Outdoor series for a third of the Zion price… and you also have to try on every pair for inconsistance in sizing. I did try the Brion and liked them but but zippers will save my knives and gear from falling.
Dude, I absolutely agree! I love prana! I also wear their shorts and love them.
You mentioned the sizing issues. I struggle with this do to being a 29×31. Not ever an option from any manufacturer. Any idea if they run small or large or long…?
PLEASE dont start featuring Charles Tyrwhitt shirts! So few Americans know about them, keep the hidden gem a secret! Otherwise they’ll adopt an American pricing model and will never be the same shirts again.
Preston is doing great though!
I highly recommend using Oakley golf pants for hiking pants and general slacks when you need good ventilation.
Nice review! Great content! I need to check those out. I used a columbia stretch pants that worked well but like to try something different.
Oh man, I just went through the biggest hunt to find hiking pants for myself. Nothing fits me, I have thunder thighs and a butt to go with them and every single pant that fit in the waist was way too tight in the thighs and crotch. I eventually found Coalatree trailhead pants in the regular fit and oh man they’re awesome! They’re total dad pants but they’re super comfy. I really like the elastic drawstring waistband!
Lol. French cuffs only exist in the USA. The rest of the world has double cuffs. (I’d never heard of French Cuffs before, even though I’ve been wearing them for over 20 years).
Single and double cuffs are especially well suited for guys with large wrists/hands and in humid environments, as they breathe a little more.
I wear Wrangler synthetic stretch pants ever day hiking in Alaska..fleeced line in the winter, non-lined in the summer….$19-25 at Walmart….quick drying, good stretch, good breathability, fleeced line are extremely warm, extremely durable for everday backpacking.
I just subscribed to your channel! Thank you for the helpful tips. Keep up the good work guys.
Great video! Thanks for sharing! I too am a Prana fan. Like you I have a whole gamut of colors that I wear 98% of the time. Lol so far my coworkers haven’t said anything. But my closet is full of the Zion stretch. I was wondering if you could elaborate or compare and contrast the two pants. I haven’t tried the Brion, but I like the five pocket jeans style look. I like the fit of the Zion stretch because my thighs are extra thick and I find it hard to find a good pair of pants that fit. I wonder if you have any insights on the differences. Thanks!
I ordered these pants and I LOVE them! More comfortable than my REI convertibles and cheaper. The material is more durable and they fit great.
I’m using the Fjällräven Keb pants. Mainly due to the ventilation and the quality etc. Might be a bit overkill for some people tho. And the price is like $220.
For hot/humid weather you need air permeability. The higher the SPF the lower the the air permeability. What tests are you using for your breath ability.
real sick video! gonna cop these. You should come out to BC and hike here!
Thanks for the great information, just ordered two pair. I also wear Columbia pants but do not have the convertible pants. Awesome job on explaining everything on the pants.
I don’t like your style, but you have some great tips and you’re one of the better Canadian/Albertan YouTubers because you don’t pretend to be an expert, you come across as you being you, which is awesome.
morning mate! is the shorts inseam 8 inch or 10 inch? thanks!
Wow! Great review guys and great modeling Missy! You just upped your game as a star! ⭐️
Hi Matty. Good review! These pants are very similar to the ems-mens-camp-cargo-zip-off-pants, of which I have two pair. The one advantage of the EMS pants is that they have a side bottom hem zipper, so that you don’t need to take off boots to get the lower half off. If you’re wearing trail runners, that might not be a concern but I wear mid-height boots. The advantage of the Columbia pants is that one zippered pocket.
So you can wear them in a barrel style.. That answered a question I’ve had for a while… Edit: How about wearing them with jeans? Is that a no no?

Thank you! I have worn barrel-cuffs for years. But now have two double-cuff shirts and wasn’t sure if i was to fold the cuff outside or inside. I was familiar with the kissing cuff method but I wasn’t sure if it was acceptable to configure the cuffs more like barrel cuffs. You’re video helped me! Thank you. I do enjoy your channel!
I´m a classic man (even i have 35) and that´s why i never wear a french cuff shirt without tie or a suit. I understand that other men would like to wear a more relaxed style and for they your recommendations be perfect. Let the successes continue.
I love French cuffs my goal is to eventually have all my collared shirts be French cuff and wear them everyday they just feel so much better
Look up the story of Hercules Tyrwhitt and how he got his name.
I will tailored French cuff shirt with detachable collar, or better I just use without collar interlining and permanent sewed collar so I can skip tie?
My understanding that I read once was that the French Cuff is not French at all. It’s English and was either created or brought to fame by someone with the name French. Can’t recall the first name.
And this guy seems like a real nice guy but I just looked up dork and a picture of was there.
Why is he straining when speaking. Does he have hemorrhoids? Sorry but I vote for a new guy.
very informative and useful video. keep them coming my friend
French cuffs/cufflinks -with a nice darker colored sports jacket and dressier (dark) jeans (with also derby shoes)… would that be to much of a stretch though -jeans and cuffs?
I value your opinion.
but I’m a guy who likes/needs to have his sleeves rolled up. Some gentlemen do work with their hands. French cuffs, while stylish, are often impracticable..
When I was teaching in Thailand I would wear “French Cuff” shirts unless there was a special occasion that the school required me to attend. i was teaching special classes that suggested that I should wear shirts and ties that would show the students that they needed to dress at a level above the others as they would be in the higher positions of business and also public service.
I rarely suit up here in the desert, but when I do, I love breaking out a pair of my granddad’s mid century links. People treat me like royalty, lol.
Devin. I’m a smallish guy wear 29” waist, and most hiking pants I look up start at 30-32” waist. Do you have any suggestions on brands for us little guys?
I guess you can wear shirts with french cuffs with a tracksuit and Nike shoes.
OK. After you go over the French border into Germany, change into handcuffs.
Another myth of the “French Cuff” is that the French military ordered the extra cuff so when they surrender the Germans can see the Frenchmen’s arms raised more easily.
I like the professionalism. Actually it’s good to know history behind every styles. Please release more videos I am hungry to learn these type of minute details.
Paul Frederick online is excellent. I get the 100% Egyption Cotton French Cuff for about $48 when waiting for sale. Absolutely love the material and made very well.
shout out to Charles Tyrwhitt!!! the best shirt for the price. my closet is also filled with these shirts! once u buy one, it becomes ur “base” shirt
I always thought of FCs as more formal. Someone on Quora recently said that does not need to be the case, just go with an informal cuff link (like silk knot) if you’re pairing with a sports coat. And I just today thought about seeing if I could turn the FC into a barrel style and hook with the links that way and… you can! Now I’m going to get a lot more use out of those shirts! I just don’t like how the extra fabric feels under my jacket with the “kissing” cuff. Not sure what I think about wearing them with a cardigan. As with all things sartorial, all the components need to complement each other. Best from Indiana!
Preston, you have the most amazing cheekbones and contoured face! That’s the kind of cheekbones and face contouring only a guy in his 20s and 30s has.
“some traditionalists may give you a questioning look” who is more traditionalist than Raphael? lol
Hi, thanks for the video. I’m wondering what you think of using ‘sleeveless’ sweaters (or ‘sweater vests’ also without buttons) with French cuff shirts under a suit jacket? Many thanks!
Thanks for this excellent video! I’ve been thinking about getting into French cuffs lately, but had been afraid to since I remembered they were only appropriate for formal wear. Glad to know the rules have changed! The explanation of the outfit at the end of the video was also a great example to get me started thinking about possible outfits.
I sincerely appreciate how informative this video was. Also, I’ve known and utilized the barrel cuff with French cuff shirts and links for years, nice to see someone discuss and share. The only thing is that your shoe game is severely lacking. So many great shoe options for men these days besides just the traditionals. You shouldn’t be scared to try a ‘no show’ sock with brown dress shoes instead of the old fashioned knee high style you’re wearing in this video.
Way too seldom I wear them would say. I don’t own any french cuffed shirts to be honest. I should invest in some. But I do own many convertible cuff equipped shirts. Is that style wise okay do you think? Thanks for great videos and ideas, greetings from Sweden.
There are some designers that do French cuffs for women, too. I’m really happy that I found this video because I’m currently looking for a vintage blouse with French cuffs. (I found one the other day, but it was already sold to someone else.)
Nice and informative video. The problem is that all cuff links i ever encountered are supposed to be worn with french cuff shirts, which is pretty disappointing, because there arent many french cuff shirts at an affordable price and many shirts i own have the option to use cuff links too. The problem here is that there isnt enough fabric so the cuff is extremely loose:/ I would really appreciate it if there where any cuff links around for the single cuffs specifically:)
Excellent explanation Preston. Thanks for the great tips..!!
I will wear my french cuff shirts without a jacket in my warm and humid country. It still looks fantastic and makes me stand out because most people in my country just wear standard mass produced shirts.
I was taught the older convention of gold cuffs during the day ( sun) and silver ( moon) in the evening. I only collect double cuffs with chained links and discovered oval cuffs are difficult to put on VS squared corners.
A button cuff could be converted to wear with cuff links. Remove the button and replace with a button hole. Easily done on a home sewing machine or at the laundry or tailor.
My only thought about french cuffs is that if worn with a tie, they should also be worn with a jacket, lest you look like a member of the wait staff.
My own recommendation is not to where French cuffs with denim jeans in the “radical chic” style. It’s just “outre.”
Brion are 100% the best outdoor/travel pants I’ve owned. The Zion were really good but these fixed any gripes I had. Love them!!!!
GREAT VIDEO. PERSONALLY, 90 PERCENT OF MY SHIRTS HAVE FRENCH CUFFS. I THINK THEY LOOK DIFFERENT AND ALWAYS ONE MAKES A STATEMENT.
Who the heck is this robot dude? Look like he is going to pierce my soul with his eyes, Loosen up!
Would the Barrel style be appropriate for black tie or is it considered to be a more casual style of wearing double cuffs?
Great video, but I have a question. I have a French cuff shirt that I bought from Charles Tyrwhitt to wear with a pair of beautiful cuff links my wife bought me. When I wore them with a sports coat they wouldn’t show under the jacket. I wanted them to show at least a little bit because they match perfectly with the shirt. What am I doing wrong or what can I do. Thank You
Very good vidio. I love shirts with french cuff shirts. Very informative. Regards from Jakarta
I’m 48. I dislike “French Cuffs” or double fold style cuff dress shirts. . I noticed the sleeves or cuffs would collect sweat, grit, lint, grime, etc over the day(shift). No matter what you may do or how you avoid dusty or outdoor spaces, the cuffs get dirty-stains over time. . Actor & film industry legend Charlton Heston wrote that he “always” wore French Cuffs.
On most occasions, I’m suited and booted and that means a tie, French cuffs and links.
Wrong to worry about your shirt sleeves being longer than your jacket sleeve as suggested in this piece. Shirt sleeves should ALWAYS be longer than you jacket, normally by one inch (2.5cm)
An excellent tutorial. I like your suggestions regarding the more informal use of the French cuff, particularly the neat trick of converting to a barrel cuff. I will now get greater use from my French cuff shirts.
I always wondered what the extra holes were for! Love the channel and company Fort Belvedere.
Personally, I am a sucker for a French Cuff (AKA Double Cuff) and Cufflinks. I have designer Cufflinks (well over 15 sets) and wear them 50% of time. Twenty five percent when I am wearing tradetional clothes and twenty five percent of the time when I am wearing Jeans or sports wear, I do not wear them.
Thnk you for bringing this topic up. God Bless
What about cufflinks with a jacket with surgeon cuffs? Do you leave the top button of the surgeon cuff open?
“Although the occasional traditionalists might give you a questioning look, you may feel free to…. destroy Western Civilisation. And nobody will have the balls or righteousness to publicly object.”
Hello, do you think i can wear them as i am security officer with black suite, pants white shirt and black tie and black waist coat. Thanks
Very timely, as I have to decide to wear mine to an event or not. Thanks again!
I do a variation of the single french cuff style. I take the cuff and sew a fancy button, ie. gold, leather or an artistic button to replace the normal button
Then I sew a duplicate fancy button on the reverse side of the other button. When I “kiss” button the cuff together it forms the single layer french cuff with the button replacing the cufflinks.
I prefer this than using cufflinks, as I find them all with a wider link to accommodate the more common double cuff.
The slimness of the cuff and the use of beautiful button make the shirts a less formal and more casual sporty while giving it an eye-catching look.
Preston, if you’re so great, why did the Gentleman’s Gazette hype cra++py Ace Marks shoes? I mean really, get off your high horse. Your video content is generally superior. Your advice vis-a-vis what to buy stinks. Money corrupts everything, even The “Gentleman’s” Gazette. P.S.: You also charge way too much for shipping. Do you think we’re all fools?
How should french cuffs fit your wrist? I noticed you have rather loose cuffs and I’m wondering if that can also be a proper fit as it would be based on preference
I am a doorman and wear French cuffed shirts. Is this appropriate?
I love French Cuffs, and the cufflinks at the site are just outstanding. One of the things I love about being almost 70 is can wear what I want, and I get a pass for faux pas. This is my very favorite YouTube Channel., I like the owner’s last name too.
Can French Cuff be worn with Oxford Collar button down shirt? I have made some of my custom made shirt with OCBD Shirt and French Cuff Style.
Excellent choice of background music.
All my shirts are French cuffed and I wear them with anything up to my old rugged leather jacket, which may be up to taste:-)
Very useful and informative video about Cuffs/Links. I wear French cuffs most of the time. Preston good job.
stop with the drums in the background… try varying up the sounds. It’s very distracting
I am a working manager and I love French cuffs. Thanks for the tip about rolling the cuff for use with sweaters. I always wear with a tie and generally try to match with a tie bar. Keep doing what you guys do!
I love my hiking trousers from Norrøna. I once fell and cut up my knee so it was bleeding, but not a scratch on the trousers, haha!
I use the Kuhl Renegade cargos and love them. Those pants look comfortable though. Prana makes really stellar outdoor clothing.
If you wear French cuffs and have a wedding ring or a ring you should not wear a wrist watch because you’re adding too much decoration to that part of your arm.
I believe Preston could benefit a lot by putting on a bit of muscle mass, he looks really lost in his clothes at times
Big fan of French cuffs. I like that it gives me another way to show off my own style with the cuff links.
I own the Columbia Silver Ridge “Stretch” Convertible pants.
I love them, and have no complaints about chafing, or heat build up, and I live in a hot climate. Light and Comfortable! I actually find that they help me feel cooler.
I purchased the Green color, called “Major” thirteen months ago on Amazon for $7.99, and the the Black color a month later for $16.01.
I think I scored some deals, and the pants have performed great.
Columbia states that the Silver Ridge Stretch Convertible Pant feature Omni-Shade UPF 50 fabric for maximum protection against the sun and Omni-Shield water and stain repellent fabric for weather-heavy days outside.
The Columbia technologies seems to work, but I have noticed that the water repellency has diminished with use over time.
I have been washing them with the Gear Aid Revivex Pro High Tech Fabric Cleaner, and I have tried to restore the water repellency with the Gear Aid Revivex Wash In Water Repellent Concentrated Formula for Outerwear, which I apply separately after washing using the “Soak” cycle in my washing machine.
This seems to restore the water repellency at least for awhile.
I could also use the Gear Aid Revivex Spray, but have not tried that yet.
The pants dry super quick, so really not a problem, but I do like that they don’t retain dirt, soil, and stains that easily.
I just got back from a multi day adventure, and I had to do some “crawling” (don’t ask), and after washing, I see no evidence of any stains on the knees of my pants.
Doug, thanks for taking the time to produce this review!
love them!..got a 1in. rip on the back pocket, though not running, you wouldn’t happen to know how to fix it?
