As a home user longevity and reliability are important factors. With the C2 i can purchase every single spare part for the rower, along with full schematics of the appliance. I can also log into the C2 forum if i have any technical issues and discuss with other users. I can’t do this with the Matrix or any other high end rower.
As a fat guy (for now), I was pleasantly surprised to hear considerations about how belly size can impact the experience. I think it is frequently overlooked by fit people to whom it would never even occur. Nice review. (Already bought a concept 2 E a couple of weeks ago before seeing this review and I am loving the machine and the rowing workout)
Anyone have any feedback on the Life Core R100 if you can get it at half the price of the Concept 2?
Great review, Jim…I’m currently debating between Concept 2 & Water Rower…I’m 6’6″ and my gym has both…Concept 2 for the general workout area and Water Rower for classes….I’ve used both and like both…I am going back and forth on one I should buy for home use…can you sway me one way or the other?
They should check the bicycle handlebars and saddles from the ergonomic aspect. They also can use a padded bicycle short for the hard padded seats.
Does the Matrix maintain online performance data? I am motivated by peer group competition, so I am afraid that the Concept 2’s data (and erg competitions) are too valuable to give up. Otherwise, the Matrix might be better for me.
Concept 2 have addressed the cushy issue regarding the seat. I.e you can have a tractor seat, or they sell a cushion for the standard seat, I know, mine has just arrived today.
I was hoping you would talk about the aspects of more expensive vs. less.
After going through Amazon reviews, I found conflicting opinions on resistance.
some say it was too easy and they couldn’t get a good enough work out and others said it was fine. Maybe some are elderly and some are younger people. Since you have a more expensive professional unit maybe you could share your experience?
I’m sure this has been said, but the best rower is the one you use. I have a concept 2 and love it. They have the water rowers at my gym, if that ever opens again, and I’m not a fan. Not bad but not great.
The indoor rowing community use Concept 2’s. If you’re going to want to compete, then it’s going to have to be on a C2 and finally, indoor rowing is tough, very tough, so a sore arse (which incidentally the C2 has never given me) will be the least of your worries.
I mean Concept 2 has been doing it since the early 70’s. I like the C2-PM5 when rowing.
тоже купил в зоне спорта гребной тренажер. правда немного другую модель, но все очень понравилось.
Concept 2 is built like a tank.
I’ve owned one for 22 years and it still works like new.
Funny how all machines except R3 and Concept2 have much lower split times. I row a 1:54 2000 (I’m 60) and on the water rower I was at 1:41
Guess which machine my coach looks at?
Nice video! I been rowing since 17 so 12 years and i love it! I wanted to mention though that it may be worth mentioning the bodymax rowing machines, I used to have a concept but as time went on the resistance became less challenging I understand however that rowers use a resistance of level 4-6, however the bodymax r70i has 16 levels of magnetic/air resistance and the level 1 = a level 5 on a concept they have newer additions nowadays like the r100 and i would definately put it on par if not better then the concept and 300-400$ cheaper it just seems these rowing machines are being less noticed would be great to hear an opinion thanks
Never seen a matrix rower in a British rowing club. On the other hand the concept is everywhere, every club has a long bank of machines as they are the preferred option for water towers.
Having recently purchased a rower, there is one additional consideration I’d add which is the monitor. I made the mistake of only looking at the information it displays without considering it’s ability to input workouts which require something more than simply counting down time, distance, etc. This makes it hard to participate with the follow along videos without the use of an app to keep tabs on each segment of the workout.
pretty stupid question lol whats better for weight loss? or is it the same
I have been using Matrix exclusively for the past year. Great review dude and I agree totally with assessment. Silent good seat bad handle design smooth cushy seat good computer.
If you replace the “Rowing Machine” in the video title with any product name, the same video still works.
Concept 2 mimics the feeling of rowing on the water as much as possible, the distance between your legs shorter for that reason. I apologize if there are any mistakes, I don’t know English so I wrote on google translator for that reason
I’ve used both and can’t stand rowing on the Matrix. When using the Matrix I really missed the woosh sound of the Concept2
Huge factor: the flesh. The people, customer service, owners,….the corporate culture. Matrix?: Taiwanese mega corp. Call for customer service > will get multi level auto select, possibly, with patience getting human being who has little knowledge of (for example) computer interactive procedure that was tested out on consumers/bleeding edge. Concept2: Call, or walk in the front door, you can talk to Customer Service people who have been there 9 years, 12 years. Ask to speak to one of the Dreissigacker, brothers (founders, owners, since 1976), and you can! While the other brother is not far up the road, continuing to operate a nonprofit that has supported and build many stellar coaches and athletes in rowing, nordic skiing, running and biking.
I’m much interested in the force-curve/feeling of rowing of this machine.
Everyone says concept 2 but Idk it never pushed me I know it’s based on effort but it just hasn’t worked for me but this morning I used a matrix rower with resistance knob and I loved it. So does that mean I should purchase rower with resistance?
Well done, like your other vids.
Of course, rowing studios are pretty much closed and the prices for machines has gone up.
I hadn’t realized this channel existed when I decided it was time to augment swimming with rowing and I found a UK based site that seems to do a good comparison between many models (maybe most/all the ones available in the UK). https://www.rowingmachine-guide.com/compare.html Each listing links to an individual review page.
Note the top of their comparison page says pretty much exactly what you list here.
I ended up ordering one of the FirstDegreeFitness adjustable resistance water rowers for dynamic resistance, adjustability, quietness, fits my space, availability, and, finally, price. Should have it tomorrow.
matrix rower seat looks like its made of sponge this over time will ware and bum sweat from other people will soak in to seat Grose the concept 2 seat its make of hard plastic and wont Soak bum sweat
The cult of Concept is almost as bad as the Crossfit cult. OLD design. And the patent is out. Lot of alternatives that are better and quieter. And have better features.
I rarely hear anybody say anything positive on the noise the concept 2 makes. For me it’s what makes it a perfect machine. Not only does it give the impression you’re putting in a lot of effort, but once you’re familiar with it, you can keep the same split time with your eyes closed so you can focus on every sensation in your body. Just thinking of the sound makes me want to workout!
My experience with each of them….The Concept 2 such comfortable and challenging rower…..wonderful feelings into 1 hour…… The Matrix the handles are too
thick and no ergonomic to me and make deep hurt and sleep my arms in just 5 minutes of training….useless(I tried it during 3 different days and it happpen the same again)
I have used the matrix at a gym in Norway when travelling, I hated it it felt really weird.
Had my C2 for nearly 20 years, takes minimal servicing and just built very well, in all that time only had to replace the PM as I broke it when moving a deadlift bar.
Poignant! Your words of wisdom can be applied to just about any purchases.
Link to buyers guide is not working, just takes you to the web store…
I’m trying to pay off debts, and can only afford to spend $500 for the Schwinn Crewmaster (or something similar). Do you think the Crewmaster is good enough to get started on while I work on saving up for a Concept2?
Matrix wins hands down but I’ll replace the handle with a Concept2 handle. I’m a bit shocked Matrix use such a stupid string attached handle. Can you also tell us all about the BodyCraft VR500 and the SpiritFitness CRW 800. I hear both of those have adjustable resistance we can change directly from the handle. Now isn’t that AWESOME! ✔
Matrix looks good and indeed there are many machines out there but the Concept2 has stood the test of time and is still used by most top rowers.
I bought my own Concept2 twenty years ago and it is still going strong. A big initial investment but an absolute bargain considering the use it has had.
Great review though, always good to see other machines! Thanks for posting!
Concept2 closer foot placement is better if you are practicing for rowing in a boat
Great video. After shopping for a used concept 2 model D, I decided it only made sense to buy a new one and get the full 3 year warranty for a couple of hundred dollars more. It holds its value. Thanks Shane.
but which is used by every national team. that’s right the concept
This guy cannot even row! For instance, he does not postpone his back movement at the start of the stroke. Is that a licensed sports trainer or a paid actor?
Good, sensible video. I love my rower but it’s a cheap one and I’ve had to do quite major repairs on it. It works well as a rower but build quality is really important if you’re going to use the machine regularly. Superb exercise machines though and very satisfying to use once you get used to them. Go easy at first!
How did you not compare that the C2 requires maintenance on the chain and the Matrix requires no maintenance?
I bought a water rower
I thought I loved it. Considering that I have been rowing on a concept 2 all my life..well I took it back and bought THE MATRIX!!! Excellent rower!!! Its an investment for me as I row almost everyday and on a dragonboat team!!! The water rower had no resistance challenge. Beautiful sound of water but thats about it!!!
matirix
rower at the gym had the beam break. The heel cup is more narrow, so my feet slip out. poor design.
You had a lot of good points but you never talked about any different rowers at all. You’ve been bought and paid for by concept
Matrix handles hurt my blister-filled rower hands Austin, at least C2 provides better grip. RP3 or a C2 Dynamic Rower champs them all though
Some people just don’t like noise. That’s why we consider that. We are considerate people over here. I’m searching for that absolutely silent rowing machine that a serious professional athlete would enjoy. Hopefully with great range of resistance levels adjustable from the handle just like on a bicycle. Still haven’t found it. Thanks
I bought a $400ish water rowing machine and it’s perfect. That’s what I’d recommend you get. Water rowers are the best and really the only thing you get with higher end machines is a better little tracker screen. That’s the only thing about mine that I could complain about, the distance is off considerably. Honestly all I really need is the timer and stroke count.
Can you make the model d 20 inches above the floor?
In other words, is there a part for the model d that make it 20 inches above the floor like the model E?
I had the concept 2. I sold it. The truth of rowing machines is that rowing is mind numbingly boring. It sucks but it is what it is.
Is there some reason you don’t put the handle of the Concept in the provided holder? It’s drivin’ me nuts!
the BEST equipment are ones that are easy to fix at home and their websites sells every single replaceable part, i seen so many £2000+ machines out there that have zero support zero cheap replacement parts ( charges a premium if they do ) concept 2 is the best for competition stats maintenance and user friendly
I have a WaterRower and I’m totally satisfied with it…. it’s so smooth and quiet. I’ve also tried the Concept 2 I prefer my Waterrower
A great video and exactly what I need at this moment looking for a CP2 as a good dark horse that I’m now and trying to get there ( on the other side). Txs again.
New Subscriber; Good Presentation, But, Needs To Make Mention Of It’s Cons, As Well As It’s Pros. Thanks.
I think it’s important to mention the Matrix is twice the price of the C2.
I can’t find ANY legitimate review on a budget rower. The useless “Top 5 Best” videos dominate youtube. I can tell most designs are bad just by looking at them, but there HAS to be a good rower for $500 or less.
I bought a Concept 2 last week. Love it. I set it up in 15 minutes out of the box!
I’ve rowed here and there over the years in gyms, but recently watched a lot of videos/read up quite a bit in advance of actually purchasing one of my own. Came upon this video (thank you!), which featured the two rowing machines I was looking most closely at and it answered a lot of my questions. Only thing left to do was go in the store and try them both out. Having now done this, the Matrix is the best machine for me (purchased!). It was a lot more comfortable to sit on and I really like the fluid, nearly soundless movement. I did see what you mean about the finishing pull being easier than the initial pull, but there is definitely still resistance at the end. In other words, to me, it doesn’t at all feel like the final pull is too weak; I actually think it feels to have a normal/standard feel at that phase of the stroke. Rather, if anything, the initial pull is more difficult than other machines, which makes the end seems easier than it actually is hope that makes sense. Regardless, these are incremental differences when compared to other machines. Comparatively, what I most disliked about the Concept 2 was the slack in the chain that seemingly results after each stroke and causes a slight delay before you are able to begin the next stroke. To each their own and all, but I didn’t really think the comparison was all that close between the two machines when compared side by side.
Might need an update there’s quite a few new high quality machines out there
I’m trying to figure out what rowing machine to by, what I’m looking at with most consideration is what give you the best workout. I’ve only ever been on the concept 2 but I would love to consider a water rower or this magnetic one. The handle thing isn’t an issue if you ask me, looks easily replaceable. I’ve got no problem dropping 2k on a machine i just have so much issue figuring out what to get.
I’ve actually looked with great interest at the Dynamic Concept rower.
Anyways thanks for the info.
You never touched on the PRICE!!!!!!!!
Nor on the COMPUTERS??!!!??!!
I just bought my used concept 2 D on Saturday….. Solid machine ✊
Static rowing ergometers such as the C2 Model D should have been relegated to the dustbin of history years ago. A dynamic rowing ergometer is the only sensible choice. On a static device the user flings his or her body mass up and down the rail at every stroke. On a dynamic, the inertial stresses related to that body mass movement are almost eliminated because, relative to ground, the user’s mass moves very little. Also, on a dynamic, the energy that is used on a static to move one’s body weight up and down the rail, is instead imparted to the flywheel, which results in a more efficient stroke.
”This thing is heavy”, he says, miming trying to lift the machine WHILE SITTING ON IT.
LA Fitness has Matrix. Garbage rowers. Complete garbage. I own a C2 so much better. Nothing right now is close to the C2.
Great to get work in and break a sweat. Work on the rowing techniques.
Got my Concept 2 3 day’s ago. Super excited to start rowing!
I need a lighter weight machine that is semi silent any suggestions??
Before finalizing your review please try out a Matrix with a few years of use on it. There are 3 of them at a gym near me, and all three are like rowing on cobblestones. I don’t know if the rollers get out of round over time or what, but they were so bad I decided to join a different gym with a Concept 2. I have never seen a Concept 2 with that problem.
I had no idea that “noise” was not mandatory for a rowing machine. That is definitely cool. Had that been a concern, and had I known of the Matrix when I was researching prior to purchase, still that double weight and double price tag would have been hard to swallow. (Mobility was a plus in my case, and I really would have choked at 2 grand). Now that I have a Concept 2, I’m thinking there may be a not-so-small market for a sorbathane seat cover…
I have a concept 2 but new tecnogym rower is a lot better. Unfortunately its over £3000, nearly 3 times the price.
remember you can buy diferent seat-options for concept 2…..
Thank you! I had a fan rower in my shopping cart and took it off after your video. I live in an apartment in bldg with thin walls. I bought a water rower instead. Lower decibels. Your review was very helpful!
Extremely well built, sturdy, and great quality for home use.>>> t.co/XglGxUY5Za Both my son and I enjoy using it. He’s on a rowing team and I just use it for exercise. The seat is pretty hard so if you don’t have natural padding you may need a cushion seat. I bought one on amazon. You will also need oil to keep the chain moving well. Otherwise, there’s not much to keeping it maintained. This is NOT a rickety piece of home exercise equipment. It’s definitely worth the investment!!!
Thanks for the review. Sounds like Concept 2 made very few enhancements from one model to the next.
@Training Tall… Will you do a comparison between Dynamic (Oartec Dx, RowPerfect/RP3) versus Static (Concept2) rowers? And no, Concept2’s verison of the dynamic is supposedly not even remotely the same as the Oartec or the RowPerfect. Dynamic rowers are supposed to be easier on the lower back, emphasis on leg drive and reinforces proper technique with every single stroke.
Technogym skillrow beats both hands down, unfortunately it costs more than both these rowing machines put together.
I would love to see a comparison between static and dynamic rowers, as the C2 is what most people have access to, but the RP3 is what a lot of rowing clubs use, and what you prefer to train on
If it were 60 second video, it may have been somewhat useful. At 13:06 it is huge waste of time.
2020 resolution:get myself into a row machine and this video really helped.
I have a model E. It is ideal for training and the extra height makes it simple to get on and off
Another great video! I currently have a concept2 D but will apply this to a GHR machine I’m thinking of purchasing.
You can get a designed seat cushion for Concept 2 which I have and use all time, especially good on longer (5k+) rows. The C2 at our gym is not that loud either. Cheers Peter
I have a C2 that I use on non lifting days. Really is a good full body workout but doesn’t replace weight training
I got click baited. Smh..I really wished-You know what?…I already wasted enough time..I’ll keep the value comment to myself.
Think the current C2 is loud? Go find a Model B! That sucker sounded like a jet engine!
I’ve been using the C2 since 2006. Best rower around. As for price, I bought directly from the manufacturer and saved a bundle. Their web site is great to keep track of you progress, have virtual rowing teams and some great inspirational motivation to keep you rowing.
I would be interested in seeing a review of the Octane Ro and how it compares to the Matrix and the Concept 2.
concept 2 would drive my neighbors crazy i live in a apartment my water rower is pretty quiet all though the wood creeking is a little annoying
Thanks for the advice. Super straight forward, sensible, and most of all, helpful.
This is more like How to Buy Any Piece of Exercise Equipment. I was hoping for something that was specific to rowing machines.
Well done video, but a bit misleading on the title.
have you heard or used D Master r3000 rower? Apparently its supposed to be a concept 2 d knock-off and a little cheaper.
Magnetic ones are most of the time cheaper. And it doesnt give the same feeling.
Feet closer together is more like real rowing. A good thing imo.
I have just ordered the C2 and waiting for delivery this week. I started with a $350 Chinese magnetic “home rower” and… Broke it during normal workouts in 2 months. After inspection it showed, that there was a design flaw inside. Under the plastic hood I could see, that there were savings on every possible part. The ribbed belt propelling the flywheel gave up badly. If I replaced the belt it would last another few weeks… It has no sense. The guarantee would replace the belt and after next belt torn, the retailer would accuse me to use the device commercially. No sense, no time, futile fight, not worth the price of this home toy for (weak) kids. Who invented the term “home rower” in the first place? If you are training seriously and want to do your best at workouts, the rower will be loaded the same way it would be loaded on a commercial gym. The place of training does not matter.
I am too poor to loose my money on scrap metals and cheap plastic. I just want to train rowing, not to fix the rower all the time.
Be prepared, that a decent rower (as a brand new one) costs around $1000. And remember the price does not guarantee quality, but cheap rowers barely can stand a lightweight girl’s stretching exercise, not a workout of a moderately trained 200 pounds, 6 feet 2 inches tall man. Avoid buying rowers for “home use”. This is euphemism for low quality, that will not endure more than few tens of normal workouts. Aim for these intended and licensed to use in commercial gyms in non-stop regime.
This is my personal experience. It costed me several hundreds of bucks. Quite an expensive lesson. I hope, that somebody will read this and saves his heavily earned money. One loss is enough.
I am an enthusiastic beginner of this sport and I thought, that this sport does not have to be so expensive at start. Actually the cheapest way is… the expensive one. The only pro of this situation is, that I started to like this sport and what it does to my body and mind. But I could do it much more cheaply just by buying a ticket to a local gym and checking it out…
I found the Matrix to be harder per meter than the Concept 2. Of course I spend my whole life on a Concept!
Very pleased to announce the release of my new eBook, ‘Row Your Fat Off!’. If you have just began using the rowing machine or recently purchased a machine for yourself, THIS is the ultimate guide to get you started in the right direction towards your fat loss goals! You can check it out from the link in the description box above! THANK YOU for all of your support!!
Really appreciate the information clears up everything you need to know many thanks
I’ve worked in Houston for a commercial fitness repair company since 2001. First as a tech, then estimating parts since 2008. You’re best option is Concept II. The parts are readily available, even for older models. The parts are inexpensive. All the other brands y’all have mentioned, most aren’t commercially rated. The Matrix is, but the longevity of their units aren’t. The owner of my company had a C2 in his house until he put a stepmill in there. Matrix consoles are super expensive to replace, after the warranty expires. You might as well buy a new machine. I don’t know how much the units are, but the console on Matrix RXP is $2,065.99 + installation, labor, trip, shipping. Concept 2 consoles are about $500 + service charges.
Thank you for the video. I am a huge Concept 2 fan, and I really appreciated the candid, no marketing glitz style that is consistent with a product that is the best (and best value) on the market.
Hey, you need to put a disclaimer at the beginning: For millennials only, for old school athletes fast forward to 16 minute mark! There goes 20 minutes of my life I’ll never get back and I don’t have too many minutes left. A demo of the rowing machines would’ve been nice but I digress it was a comparison right?
Austin, another great video. I have learned a lot from you over the last couple of months on proper technique and how to increase effeciency. Wondering if you have any experience or had a chance to try a Sole Fitness SR500? Not sure if this is a new competitor in this category, but not finding much out there. Sole is no slouch when it comes to building quality durable treadmills (mine has several thousand miles) so I would expect the same of their rower. Thanks and keep up the great work.
Thanks for this I am actually going to pay a day rate at a fitness club so I can try out their Concept2 for awhile.
Классный тренажер. Около месяца занимался на таком в зале, поэтому когда захотел домой купить вопрос с выбором не стоял. Цены в интернете разные, самую адекватную нашел в магазине Зона Спорта. Спасибо за обзор!,
Why would you ever use anything other than a concept 2? It’s what they use at international level competition and it’s also what real rowers use. The noise is most similar to real rowing along with the foot plates and the seat.
I started shopping for a rower just before COVID shut it all down and now there’s almost zero chance of getting a Concept 2 before July. I don’t want to wait that long. What’s your 2nd favorite rower?
Considering a slightly used Bodycraft V400 for 675. I know everyone likes the C2, but what do you think about a cheaper machine.
Video could’ve been 10 seconds long. Couldn’t find the price on matrix’s website (gotta call) so I looked up what a place nearby that sells decent equipment lists it as. $900 for the concept 2….. $1900 for the matrix. Is there even as debate exploring further? Rowers are simple machines… even the concept 2 at $900 is a bit extreme imo…. but compared to other “high end” rowers (in quotes because… it’s a rower…. it is literally a seat that slides and a handle attached to a string/ cable/ chain which is attached to a flywheel or whatever medium used to supply resistance. I never understand how companies decide upon price points for equipment. I mean how does as piece of equipment that weighs 57 lbs cost 900 bucks? That’s almost $16/lb. To put that in perspective… going on metalminer.com, titanium is $25.50/lb. Yeah.
Still, for the money the concept 2 is (irrationally… and pathetically) the best bang for your buck from what I can tell after months of research.
I had spent about a year trying to decide if I wanted to buy one vs just using the ones at the gym. Finally bought a Concept 2 and wish I wouldn’t have waited and had just bought it a year ago. I love it. And I love being able to separate my rowing workout from my lifting workout, instead of just tacking it on at the end.
Wanted to get a concept2, but the noise is clearly not ok for my building. I went for a WaterRower. Not the best, the wooden style and the lack of noise makes it ok.
Excellent video, I rowed in college (5 years ago) and now want to get back into it… do you think the Concept 2 Dynamic would be louder than the static counterpart? I live in an apartment building, and I am mainly concerned about it being heard by neighbours below and I’m considering the dynamic for Form and lower back reasons, just wondering about noise
Good information. When I started looking for a rower, I checked Amazon (of course) and read the reviews. I would have loved to get a Concept but budget was very limited. After much research and agonizing, I went with the Sunny Magnetic rower. Yes, wish it had more of a monitor but it works for me and still using it today (purchased 2017).
crystal clear from Will, just as the rest of his explanations. Flawless customer service
I bought a Marcy magnetic rower a year or two ago, and was happy until I started using the Concept 2’s at the gym. I think it was built by good engineers who never rowed. The track length is decent, but the catch is directly over the pedals, and you lose about a forearm’s length from your stroke.
Bought my rower last week…. can’t ever go wrong with Concept2
I use a concept 2 at work and it’s great. But at home I have a stamina X air rower and I equally love it as well
sorry, no real info, just lots of talk and links, download at your own risk
This should have been a 10 seconds video. Buy a Concept2 or go home.
I’m new to rowing and find it quite enjoyable as an alternative to Bicycling during winter months. Having said that, the only reason I haven’t bought a rowing machine is because my local YMCA has several and even when it is crowded, its always available. They use the Concept 2 also. Finally if it wasn’t for the YMCA, I probably would’ve never looked into rowing
Excellent and very clear video on the facts on the two machines. Thank you for keeping it quick and to the point.

If you really want to do sports and rowing!
3:00 id like wider foot placements because my gonads do get very cramped on the concept2.not joking it can get very er uncomfortable
Really great video. 5 stars. Even though I already have a rower, your advice could be applied to pretty much any equipment. Covered points that never even crossed my mind when I bought mine. Luckily in hindsight I made the right decision for me.
@ 5:07…. I wouldn’t necessary say the C2 (static erg) is the only rower one should be buying. Maybe if someone is dead set on a static erg, then C2 are probably the best. But having done some reading on the web, I found out that dynamic rowers (Oartec Dx, RP3, etc) are better than static rowers (C2, Water Rower, Matrix, Xebex, etc.). Dynamic rowers are suppose to be better on your lower back, mimics the mechanics of actually rowing a boat better, and they better reinforce one’s technique. Unfortunately they’re also more expensive. I’m still debating between the Oartec Dx vs the C2 static.
