so how many squares of 90% or 100% dark chocolate per day is safe to eat?
Dark chocolate has anandamide in it which is a cannabinoid linked to pleasure reward systems. That’s why it’s pleasurable. Theobromine is just a small part of it.
Wonder how many mg of theobromine is in 2tbs of raw cocao nibs?
GREAT video. How many teaspoons or tablespoons Cacau powder per day? Thank you. [email protected] jimclarkretirement.com
“It isn’t a good idea to eat a whole bar of dark chocolate.”
Oops.
Interesting but I wouldn’t eat cocoa on a regular basis if you paid me.
Would like to see a study on cocoa and neurotoxicity.
I have a bad reaction to chocolate. Doctors have been no help, they basically deny that I have an allergy or reaction and blame it on the caffeine. I think it might be the theobromine? My heart rate speeds up and sometimes goes into an irregular heartbeat, and I feel like I am gasping for breath, a feeling of hot flashes, feel nauseous and can get stomach cramping. It lasts for hours.
When you say milk blocks absorption, does that include whey protein?
Yea veggies are really good for you, too. Like the ones found on pepperoni/sausage/veggie combo pizzas and pasteurized V8 veggie drinks!!! Fruit’s good, too. Like lemon-lime sodas and fruit-flavored Jelly Bellies!!!!
I am a serious chocoholic, originally born in PA. LOL. Love dark chocolate with a small amount of sugar even in small amounts. Must have it everyday.
Pure coco tastes like shit…. what a shame… I love dark chocolate with a little sugar. Dark chocolate with no sugar not so much…
Ate 100 percent cacao bar a while back and it wired me up in an unbelievable way. I loved it
The increase in fmd is interesting but it’s so brief I wonder if there’s really much benefit to eating cocoa.
Moderation means 1 bar of Lindor 70% dark choc a day is ok or not?
I hate the taste but I still eat it for my health and especially my brain
Is cacao safe for eczema since you mentioned that theobromine has a lot of good benefits in the body?
Would you make a video about cocoa being a neurotoxin.. I’ve switched to carob powder And would love to know if I’m really making a difference
What this video sounds like to me: djdnxkdbdkdk. I am too stupid to understand this

Watching this video while drinking a huge cup of my special cocoa. A full oz. Of dark chocolate baking bar, butter, mct oil, stevia and heavy whipping cream. Sometimes I add a bit of turmeric.
I was buying my cacao from David Wolfes site longevitywarehouse.com for years because I really trust him. But they have bad customer service and shipping is so high. I don’t think they even have an office phone number anymore. It’s been impossible to get ahold of anyone from the company for help. I now question the product quality too… looking for other options. Any ideas? David Wolfe suggests his cacao is the purest on the market. Any other brands with good quality? Raw and organic.
What about the neurotoxin theobromin in cocoa? Weird he even did not mention it. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Theobromine_poisoning
Please do a vid or email about processed soy products and whether they are healthy or not….Thank you.: D
I will tell you chocolate is bad and more people agree https://youtu.be/E8ayXCzIIJc
These terms, “cacao” and “cocoa” are confusing. There’s a good you tube video explaining the difference. Cocoa powder can be processed thus reducing the beneficial aspects. Apparently cacao “nibs” (pieces of the bean) are the best. Anyway, notice the different spellings.
1.45 I think this may be a little incorrect the way youve phrased it. There are multiple adenosine receptor subtypes in CNS caffeine is an antagonist of these receptors which block them like you said. HOWEVER adenosine would activate these receptors, not block them like you were saying. adenosine receptor activation, specifically 1 and 2a subtypes (as per wiki, I dont walk around carrying specifics on subtypes of adenosine receptors in my head) is thought to increase fatigue. So antagonising these receptors via xanthine derivitives reduces this fatigue, like you were saying.
I think you just mis-worded how adenosine works.
Maybe add a little note or something over the vid:) hope this helps.
good video otherwise
I have chocolate almost everyday. because I sell chocolate at school and I keep grabbing the bars and eating them -_
Im deing of laughter right now And I go to the doctors because I ate way to much chocolate and I got really sick
Frozen bananas & cocoa powder -BAMChocolate Nice cream
I make my own “dark chocolate” from Medjool dates and raw cacao beans!
https://michaellustgarten.wordpress.com/2014/09/21/homemade-chocolate-in-2-minutes/
How much fat/cocao butter or added oils were in the chocolate in the story? Fat definitely reduces insulin sensitivity.
Hello there! What about cocoa vs cacao? Is there any research out there comparing the two? I find conflicting information online with some people calling cacao, which is less processed, healthier (nutrition dense) while others call it acidic or support that its nutrition is not actually getting absorbed.
It’s good to know that my healthy diet also includes my favorite food of all time!
Cool however cacao is getting a bad rep now amongst 811ers because of its stimulant nature which is pretty powerful. Also the neurotoxicity reports.
I just came here to know whether dark chocolate contains high amounts of iron in it to improve my cycling sport enhancements but now I fricking learn what to consume when I want to have sexual intercourse with a woman. LoL
I put coco powder in my green tea in the morning. No sugar, no fat, no milk!❤️✨
Started eating dark choco daily, now i wake up with a morning boner erry day!
I just pour some cocoa powder into my protein shake, is that wrong?
I have a question for you. I’ve noticed your promotion of coffee. As a Mormon, I cannot do coffee. What I have done is gotten some cheap baking cocoa and added that to a mug with some heavy cream and or almond milk with some stevia for sweetness. My question is, less the fats would you say this cocoa would be a good subsititue for the benefits of the cup of coffee?
Again proving that milk is absolute garbage. Cocoa for the win!
I just ate 85% cocoa ( nearly a whole bar)
And My heart is going 120-130 bpm
Theobromine is linked to tachycardia
Do you know if Theobromine has any affect on the adrenal glands? I know with caffeine it does causing cortisol to get released. I haven’t noticed any stress after eating cacao at all, but was curious if you knew.
I hope to God that i’m NOT! shooting myself in the foot because on AUG 21ST I started blending 1 ounce of Ghirarddelli 100% unsweetened dark chocolate with 1 cup of silk unsweetened coconut milk and a lil raw honey. once daily to hopefully start reverseing inflammation and oxidation in the body along with eliminating the majority of inflammatory foods what I can say is that an hour or so after my drink I feel elated like I can fly or wanna run through a brick wall like a SUPERHERO! wonder if that’s good or bad?
This man sounds whiny, bitchy and smug! He also appears very blasé, or tired because he fails to enunciate properly and therefore non-English speakers have trouble understanding what he says half the time!
Cacao vs Cocoa:
Cocoa powder is processed with alkaline and heated, most of the antioxidants have been destroyed. Cocoa powder is also called Dutch Processed, it’s used to make brownies and hot cocoa because it has a sweeter taste.
Cacao powder is ground nibs but has the cocoa butter removed, most of the antioxidants have been preserved. Dark chocolate uses cacao powder.
I don’t think 70% cocoa is dark enough to make chocolate healthy. 85% and higher are better choice
How about kidney??? Too much dark chocolate could lead to oxalate concentration in kidney….Well that was adviced by my GP.
Look forward to hearing more about that DNA thing and stuff being held back in regards to excelling.
Dr. Gabriel Cousens did a study that shown that raw cacao didnt harm the liver. a study published in the October 2009 issue of “Food and Chemical Toxicology” indicates that rats fed cacao demonstrated improvement in liver injuries Two alsmost valid studys and there are no valid studys on that raw cacao harm the liver YET. there is no TRUTH to that yet.Over 20 pounds of pure raw chocolate would need to be consumed all at once to reach toxic levels of this phytochemical they belive. It dilates blood vessels which naturally lowers blood pressure (taking strain off the heart) and increases nutrient uptake during digestion. only anyone with liver damage should avoid chocolate products, its copper content and not so much because of their theobromine content the studys says that animals cant tollerate theobromine as musch as humans can without side effects.
+Thomas DeLauer Can raw cacao powder be toxic if taken regularly in small amounts? If so, what’s the most you should take per day? Thanks for the upload.
Thomas how about a video on the benefits of fasting in relation to meditation
I basically lived on nothing but chocolate milk for my entire childhood lol
I love dark chocolate! It is great for your heart health and also for your tastebuds. Leave the milk chocolate alone and eat it DARK!
I buy dark chocolate and always inspect the ingredients list because so many manufacturers add milk or dairy butter and non cocoa fats to make it softer at room temperature. Even with that ingredients list 70% cocoa, cocoa butter, sugar 100g has around 2200kj which isn’t much different than a sandwich. Also interesting is that Lindt 70% constipates me yet Whitaker’s 72% does not. I’m presuming the difference is in how much the beans were roasted. BTW even with maybe 30% sugar (I’m guessing that cocoa butter is included in the 70& cocoa solids) the GI is around 20-30 which is quite low.
Observations:
I find that if have 100g of 70% dark chocolate instead of a sandwich with my lunchtime apple my blood pressure drops from it’s usual 145/95 (with medication) to 128/85 (chocolate & meds).
This article suggested that cocoa butter raises cholesterol and I have read an article that agrees with it but adds that it seems to prevent adhesion of LDL to the artery walls. Maybe this is because it was funded by M&M’s but I’ve had high blood pressure for at least 25 years and a recent echocardiogram suggests that I have zero plaque on all inspected arteries which is interesting considering I medium to high cholesterol. This was one of the reasons my doctor did the ECG.
So am I a freak of nature or is the story about cocoa butter being beneficial true?
I do generally have a good diet with unsweetened unprocessed nuts and grains with light milk (30ml) for breakfast, 2 slices of high fibre multi-grain bread with a slice of lean roast turkey or ham with the fat sliced off and a a light spread of olive oil based spread and evening meals are green salad or steamed greens and cauliferous vegies and carrots/parsnips or lentils/chickpeas/quinoa or sweet potato and topped off with around 120g of turkey/chicken, lean lamb, lean beef or fresh Salmon. The lamb and beef is all grain fed and the poultry is all real free range breast or thigh without skin. If I have snack it’s usually a few almonds, walnuts or brasil nuts or macadamias (and of course chocolate usually 20g per day). I drink decaffeinated tea/decaffeinated green tea and decaffeinated coffee or water and no alcohol.
I don’t know if any studies cover these sorts of details, but my diet is fairly consistent for content and quantity, except for an occasional French style lamb roast or other traditional restaurant quality meal (home cooked of course)
On the usual stats (blood pressure/cholesterol) I have a 10% greater risk of a heart attack compared to the control group of 120/80 and <4.8 but I have none of the precursors to heart attack like blockages, Diabetes II, left ventricle enlargement or palpitations & fluid retention, so who knows.
Maybe the answer is try to do no harm (to your body) and do as much good as possible that is the answer. Anybody have an idea?
I eat 25g 100% dark chocolate daily which is about 1 ounce and I can confirm that it DOES indeed lower stress and boost energy.
Did anyone else do a double take when chocolate and a salami showed up on the thumbnail?
I do enjoy some dark chocolate every now and then. It’s rather annoying how manufacturers feel they have to add milk (and even eggs) to almost everything.
Thanks, this information was pretty informative. I wonder if there is still more information to discover.
Love how educational your videos are! Btw, you have amazing smile

At what percentage of dark chocolate are you talking about? Starting at 70%? 78%? 80%?..or maybe something as low as 60%?
That explains why I’m not dead. I’ve put a tsp full of 100% cocoa in my coffee twice a day. No sweetners at all. Just need to rid the cream… one thing at a time!
On the subject of cacao, I just watched Gabriel Kalei Bocanegra, have you seen it? Who is right on this subject? When researching such foods, the contradictions can be so confusing and disheartening, not to mention time consuming. It makes it so difficult to know who to have faith in.
I’m a cacao boy. I’ve got the night on my side, and I’m wanted.
Dead or alive.
Damn. I just made a sour cream, walnut, and dark ccacao pudding with Monk fruit sweetener.
Does coconut milk blunt the impact too?
I mix pure cocoa powder with a tiny bit of honey and dip fruits. It’s like having dark chocolate covered fruit! I especially like it with strawberries and oranges.
The cacao powder I have here has per 100g 357kcals, 20.7g of fat (12.5g saturated), 19.8g protein, 8.8g carbs (0.5g sugar), 27.9g fiber. Dark chocolate has more fat, though, with around 30g per 100g.
I have high blood pressure (140/90-160/100) even though I’m on blood pressure medication. What I’ve found is that with dark chocolate it drops to as low as 128/82, even thought the chocolate is 70% cocoa/cocoa butter and 30% sugar. Because of the high fat content the GI of chocolate whether milk, dark or even white is actually a very low 20-30 although the GL may be somewhat higher. Also being in my late 50’s I’m getting to the stage where keeping my weight low is getting harder and surprisingly chocolate helps here too. I don’t why, but when I went from a low calorie/low GI diet with 20g of dark chocolate daily to the same diet with 100g of dark chocolate daily I’ve actually lost 2kg in that 2 week period. I’ve got to stop eating so much chocolate, and I’ve got to find a more effective blood pressure medication, but I thought I’d share my experiences with you given your knack for research.
Wow great video! I feel abit heavy from too much cacao but a teaspoon works.
So bad i Just started eating them at aroud 18
Wish i know about it when i was young
You should mention that chocolate on it’s own in small amounts is okay…however nobody has a small amount of chocolate I guarantee everyone eats more than the recommended daily dose. Now combine that with the consumption of tea/coffee…I was drinking 2 tea’s a day and eating 4-6 chocolates I got theobromine poisoning and almost died plus the effects of caffeine on my heart was unbearable felt like extreme anxiety when I just had fast heart rate. You should never eat chocolate everyday and if you do don’t eat it with tea or coffee or any other source of theobromine/caffeine…and don’t eat more than the daily recommended amount.
Well cacao plant grows in the rain forest of central america ( mexico, belize etc), south america (guatemala, peru etc), most of the caribbean islands (jamaica, st lucia, dominica, st vincent, trinidad and tobago etc) and africa naturally for centuries. Ancient mexicans eg mayan, incas etc used cacao as currency and for ceremonial purposes and still use it till this day. People in the caribbean use cacao often, picking and eating the fruit off the cacao, drying the cacao beans in sun, toasting them and hand grinding them, mixing them with other spices and molding them into balls or logs and this is then grated into hot water to make cocoa tea. Almost Everyday children and adults alike from greatgrandparents time drink cocoa tea in the morning or at night traditionally for years……
High fat worsens blood flow, but nuts improve it, despite being 60% fat, anyone care to explain?
Another success in making a compressed scientific video, thank you!
The only trouble is its bland boring bitter horrible. That ll be why its good for you.
wow…man…made my life….
Nice one, Subscribed. Please keep them coming…..
Chocolate and nuts tend to feed the growth… Lysine helps to starve the growth.
I always mix 20 gr cacao with 500 ml of milk, and that gives me monster erections:p
You do realize that you said when adenosine attach to adenosine receptors it blocks fatigue. That’s what you said if you replay it. Iam assuming you meant to say caffeine blocks fatigue at that particular moment. You should clarify so you won’t confuse the layperson.
I have a grandma she boil cacao every morning and drink it then work in the farm every day she lived 100 years.
The stimulation effect of cocoa can’t be healthy. Look at the caffeine and theaborne (don’t know how to spell it) content
Yeah, I add four teaspoons of cocoa powder to my banana smoothie almost everyday.
Cacao beans or nibs might actually be the best. Cacao powder has recently been under scrutiny since findings suggest high levels of lead and cadmium contamination.
http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC1281277/
http://www.naturalnews.com/045545_cacao_powder_cadmium_lab_testing_results.html
Interesting! I love making my own version of Mexican hot chocolate and chocolate fudge using a mix of organic raw cacao from Peru and high quality Divine brand cocoa powder (silkier and darker).
I have Ehlers-Danlos syndrome, and rather than losing weight, I need the nutrients, deal with chronic fatigue and am a bit sensitive to coffee!
It’s like just because I have Ehlers-Danlos, my body works like I’m a different alien species, lol.
I’m interested in the genetic aspect too considering EDS is a genetic collagen condition.
Thanks for posting! I am pretty in love with chocolate^_^
Seems like a bunch of reductionist studies (according to Dr. T. Colin Campbell’ book “Whole”).Anyway, cocoa is a refined/processed food, not something humans would be able to have whitout the current tecnology. Certainly not a whole food.
Great vid very informative!!.!! kindly please can you also do one on chest fat loss pleease?! thank you…☺
Time to address cadmium contamination in popular cocoa products? http://www.consumerlab.com/news/More_Popular_Cocoa_Powders_Contaminated/08_05_2014/
Love it! Just eat the 90% cocoa barlow sugar, no milk. Cocoa is like wine or coffeerich flavor that doesn’t need to be covered up.
Any concerns about heavy metals? I’ve read reports of cadmium and lead in cacao.
Yea, dark chocolate! eating some now:-P I always check the label to make sure there is no milk in it, though.
Dr. Greger,
There is evidence that at least some cocoa has higher lead concentrations than
other food products. Here is a link to such a study: https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC1281312/.
Can you comment about this concern in light of this evidence.
I do find your videos helpful and informative.
If a person were consuming a tablespoon of cocoa powder a day 30 to 60 minutes after drinking a quart of yogurt, kefir, or buttermilk, are the benefits of the cocoa negated?
Better than a large side of BACON, a large HAMHOCK, or pint of ICECREAM washed down with quart of HEAVY CREAM I suppose?
“Eliminating sugar appears to amplify the beneficial effects of cocoa” Or you could just state more clearly that the ADDITION of sugar decreases the effects of cocoa. Sugar is pretty terrible stuff.
Sorry Doc, you sounded seriously under the weather when you recorded this. Perhaps a nice, warm, uplifting hot cup of cocoa would do the trick?
On Wikipedia it says that the longest living human ate 1 kg of chocolate a week and the source of that info was from a newspaper. She also smoked, but many did back then, so it could be a statistical anomaly but eating the amount of chocolate that she supposedly did is very rare so there could be a chance that chocolate is just that good. French Jeanne Calment lived healthy and mentally intact until she died at 122.
so it is better to drinking kefir with cacao powder so the probiotics don’t get destroyed from the stomach acid? (as it spends less time in the stomach) the taste is bitter sour though.
I regularly drink plain raw cocoa power with hot water. You don’t even need sugar or milk. I don’t have sugar in drinks anyway.
so you talk about dark chocolate in general. what cocao % should you go for? 50%? 75%?
Cacao is so toxic that body have no choice, but to pump blood harder in order to get rid of this toxic stuff from your body as quickly as possible! 😉
Thank you for making this video and spreading the cacao magic, Thomas!
There is lead (Pb) in most commercial chocolate bars, the higher the chocolate content, the higher the Pb concentration:
http://edition.cnn.com/2016/03/25/health/chocolate-lead-test/index.html
https://www.asyousow.org/our-work/environmental-health/toxic-enforcement/lead-and-cadmium-in-food/
I eat tons of chocolate and no other excess Pb/Cd containing sources, and test high for both Pb/Cd….
What about cacao, like cacao nibs?
Cocoa is heat treated, right?
I sprinkle cocoa powder on my berries every day. It is delicious.
I took 1 oz of cocaine for two years after watched this, then I got new power and a lot of energy.
Thank you
Can you do an update in this? Also what about cacao vs cocoa?
When ever I eat cocoa organic, what ever. I feel soo sluggish and tired.. not worth it for me.
My mom is severely allergic to caffeine, so any amount of chocolate consumption would kill her.
I can vouch for the penis benefits for sure get green and golds 85%
What about raw cacao? Is there a significant difference with roasted / treated cacao?
Try a chocolate, banana, vanilla bean, organic barley malt syrup smoothie/shake! You can also do a version with peanut butter.
I feel lucky to enjoy this bitter food. The smell is just so tantalizing, that aftertaste. I like blueberry aftertaste, also. Wow, it’s so wonderful. I do believe though that many tastes are acclimated. People switch cultures and then learn to enjoy, totally enjoy the foods they eat in almost all cases.
I had eaten a whole bar of 90% cocoa before watching this. 10,000 mg in my body, I’m a ticking bomb lmao. Thank you so much for the information. You have save my life with the keto diet along other info.
What about the neurotoxin theobromin in cocoa? Weird he even did not mention it. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Theobromine_poisoning
I must be a survivalist; I have 50lbs of organic cacao nibs.
Cacao has theobromine which is toxic. Everything with bitter taste(cacao, coffee..) is TOXIC to the human body. Once again stupid Greger claims that sugar is unhealthy!! LOL What an ignorant moron! watch some John Mcdougal’s videos and educate yourself you idiot.
I eat dark choc almonds almost daily..it covers almond benefits and choc benefits!
Dark chocolate is very good for your tastebuds and great for your health. Leave the milk chocolate alone and eat it dark!
Yes, theobromine is the key. It’s a better and far more interesting stimulant than caffeine. It’s a stimulant that also lowers blood pressure. As someone (Greger or CDC? I can’t remember) already noted, it’s oddly also an effective cough suppressant.
What has to be mentioned about chocolate and cocoa though is the acrylamide levels, especially in “dutched” cocoa (heavily toasted fine powder). Certain cocoa powder, and chocolate made from that powder, can have sky high acrylamide levels (does California require acrylamide warnings on chocolate the way they require on french fries?).
I think it’s best to mostly abstain from stimulants altogether, but if you like coffee, organic cocoa is a better alternative, and if you like cocoa, the best form is raw cocoa nibsthe crushed bean (surprisingly mild and naturally sweet). Note that “toasted” cocoa nibs seem to be only very lightly toasted.
05:52 but what chocolate bar, dark one? mm im curious about the genes make video if u havent pls im gna start watching ur channel
Great information! Could you please explain (by way of example) as to how insulin sensitivity can be a positive (benefits, etc…) and how it can also be a bad thing (and how can we know if we are too insulin sensitive). Thank you; you made this point on your video and I would like to learn more about it. Also, if you could explain more about the emerging science of how theobromine affects your genes. Thank you!
I love your videos, but the loud swallowing and lip smacking isn’t that fun.
Yeah but surely it opens up the arteries because cocoa contain caffeine which is a neurotoxin? lol
Excellent footage on the reveal of a blind study of decaf vs caffeinated coffee. Highly recommended… https://youtu.be/MCYcwqXda1s
I love me some dark chocolate! I always go for 70% or above, usually 80%, and it’s always vegan, of course.
How can you be so awesome but neglect to mention Theobromine?
Even if you believe it is safe to consume 1 serving of cocoa powder, how can you do an entire video about cocoa without even mentioning once the neurotoxicity of theobromine? Many viewers will understandably deduce from this video that the more cocoa powder the better.
Say as a result, they drank a smoothie a day with 5 tablespoons of cocoa powder. Say they had 2 smoothies like that a day because they Really wanted to get even more arterial health. What do you think their theobromine levels in their blood and tissue would be?
Maybe theobromine is a myth and cocoa consumption is totally fine.
Or maybe, cocoa is fine, and even good, but only in moderation…?
Which side are you on? To not address it is potentially harmful if the people who are taking their health into their own hands end up overusing cocoa.
Please address the question of theobromine, dear super doctor you are such a beneficent person. I hope cocoa consumption is fine, but please, just address it:) I would love to add it to my smoothies again:D
I also made a video about the benefits of dark chocolate 2 days ago =)
I love dark chocolate with almond I eat them everyday ♥️it’s help me if I’m stress and anxiety
From my experience with cacao powder I learned you have to eat it 10 hours before going to sleep in order for the therobromine to get out of your blood stream. I consumed the cacao powder it in the afternoon and evening and after two weeks I was exhausted and could barely stay awake during the day. Once I researched it and found the theobromine issue I added cacao to my breakfast, drinking it or adding it to oatmeal, and I began to sleep well again. So…you really have to have cacao or dark chocolate before noon to prevent it from really messing up your sleep patterns and making you miserable.
a friend made a chocolate dessert using cocoa and avocodo,, it sure was good,.
I love unsweetened cocoa in my oatmeal! It makes it chocolatey and the fruit I put in it sweetens it enough.
I don’t know if you are aware how often you say “you see…”.
Is it suppressed with all milk, or just animal milk? What if it was vegan?
Raw cacao is healthy but some people say that it has lots of bacteria also. It contaminated with lots of different bacteria while harvesting and preparing.
Eating 100% Dark Chocolate right now. Only 8g carbs per 100g bar.

Speaking about insulin sensitivity, a new study found that a protein-rich diet, while promoting weight loss, does not enhance insulin sensitivity. Enhanced insulin sensitivity can decrease risks for diabetes.

One potential parameter is the type of protein animal protein (inc whey protein) is not as healthy as plant protein.
Coco contains theobromine which is a neurotoxin to humans.
Stay away from this stuff
cocoa is fermented from what I read but I know little about all of this. From what I understand, cacao, a similar but distinctly different thing, is minimally processed-no cooking or fermenting. Cocoa I believe is, and when that happens, the nutrient value is lowered. Although there is still benefit, the way I understand it cacao is far more nutritious. The Kuma people on an island of Panama eat large quantities.
Study in NIH is “Flavanols, the Kuna, Cocoa Consumption, and Nitric Oxide”
I bought 16 ounces of cacao powder and drink it in hot water. about a tablespoon. I enjoy the bitterness but most people will not.
I buy “Pure Natural Miracles” raw organic 100% cacao powder. The nutrition facts label states: 30% (6g) saturated fat in a 1 ounce serving size. I am not sure one can get non fat cacao powder, or at least I have not searched for it. So I would appreciate Dr. Greger commenting on the intrinsic saturated fat in the cacao bean, and whether a small amount of this fat is harmful in an otherwise vegan diet.
Great video can you make a video on your thoughts on alkaline water?
Your skin is very good. Eat dark chocolate (so good to skin).
Huge fan Dr. Greger, and have to make one correction. The cacao fruit/seed is not a bean, as the plant Theobroma cacao is not in the family Fabaceae (the bean family), and its fruit is not a legume. It is therefore inaccurate to compare it to “other beans.” I have seen you make similar mistakes before, in contrasting different “berries.” The botanical fruit type of a plant is not necessarily an indication of taxonomy or of nutrition, and furthermore the common names given to fruits, as far as fruit type, are often inaccurate. Berries exist across plant families, and not all berries are similar in nutrition. Many things we refer to as berries, or nuts, or as any fruit type, for that matter, are not necessarily, botanically speaking, berries, or nuts, etc. For example, a blackberry or raspberry is an aggregate of drupelets, not a berry, and an almond is a drupe, not a nut. I think you would find botanical fruit types fascinating to learn about and somewhat relevant. The cacao tree, from which we derive cocoa, and ultimately chocolate (from the seeds of its fruits, usually fermented first, I believe, and then dried and roasted), is in the family Malvaceae; the mallow family. Okra and cotton are also members, as well as the very useful medicinal plant marshmallow (Althaea officinalis), rich in anti-inflammatory mucopolysaccharides. The fruit type of cacao seems most commonly classified as a (pepo-like) berry, though I think there has been some confusion on the subject as I have also seen it listed as a pepo or a capsule.
l’d sell my soul to the devil for chocolate, only dark of course, from 70% to 85%,milk chocolate is crap.l prefer some sugar inside.100% chocolate gets pretty sticky in mouth and hard to swallow down but raw cocoa powder is really not that bad.Eaten with some bananas and raisins or dates sugar doesn’t need to be added at all. Thanks for the info, chocoholic 4ever.
Maybe they should study me… For years I have added a teaspoon of pure cacao, unsweetened, unaltered and unmilked to my coffee. It was my passed ketogenic diet that helped me rid myself of any need for sweetners. Real or artificial. It’s nice to find I’ve inadvertently helped my heart.
What effect does dark chocolate have on our coronary arteries?

Cocoa powder (non dutched) gives you the benefits without the fat or added sugar. My favorite snack is eating it on a frozen banana after it melts a bit with some nuts. Dark baker’s chocolate is also good if you aren’t worried about the fat content.
i just ate a bunch of dark chocolate and im watching this to make myself feel better
Unbelievable what theyve done to chocolate…whatta shame, made it fake and actually bad for us…crime?
Bad news for me. I have been mixing dark chocolate with milk hoping to get some benefit. Looks like I will have to do it with water!
When he says milk; is he referring to milk from animals? Almond milk or soy milk with cacao sounds like a pretty tasty combo
Chocolate does contain caffein which will disrupt your neutransmitter pathway process.
