The best isn’t so much anecdotal description, but the science. If one “feels good” it’s not the same as being biologically good. There’s always gonna be gaps, but having listened to Asprey he tries not to leave too many gaps. So I’d personally trust his science more than other people’s anecdotes
I’m absolutely sure that if you actually watched the video, he says the research was conducted over the phone over several years and I am sure that he does not refer to VIDEO phone! He states that if he asked someone on the phone their height and weight, that they could calculate the BMI. And the country wide survey was conducted from phone polls.
You don’t need to calculate BMI to SEE that someone is FAT.

Well I am no surgeon and do not work for one but I do know about 50 people who have been battling obesity for years and all of them even those who made permanent lifestyle changes or participated in medically supervised weight loss diets are still obese.
I know only one person who used to be obese who is now thin and she had a gastric bypass 5 or 6 years ago.
Humans have the physiology and digestive system of Primates (Gorilla, green monkey, orang outan, bonobo, our hominid ancesters ) who are all vegetarian (fruit, vegetable, leaf, and nut eaters ) Humans have been domesticating and eating animals for only about 12,000 years. That is not enough to create an adaptation that is transmissable genetically. Any biologist will confirm this! The Omnivores (bear, pig, fox, rat, boar) have another type of dentition and digestive system, a shorter intestine like carnivores etc.

We don´t need to eat cholesterol, saturated fats, neither collagen, ´cause our body is able to product those itself. Only 2 fatty acids are essential (LA & ALA). For collagen production we need vitamin C! (video 39 min). Fortunately, same foods that are rich in vitamin C, contain also potassium and magnesium which also are important to our joints. Asprey´s comments about salt contains pure misinformation.

Lol, do you really believe that the rural Chinese who get the bulk of their calories from rice eat fewer grams of carbohydrates than the typical Westerner? There are villages documented in the Oxford-Cornell-China Project as consuming over 3,000 calories per day for a typical male. I’m sure that the folks patronizing McDonalds are eating way more rice than the rural Chinese. After a few years for this video to simmer it’s become abundantly clear that Dave Asprey is a total and complete hack. Stating that his wife couldn’t gain weight until she stopped drinking soy milk due to phytic acid. What a joke. Nothing that comes out of that guy’s mouth is backed by any legitimate group-study science. It’s all small study, industry funded, hack science and anecdote. A glass of soy milk per day couldn’t scientifically cause inability to gain weight or disrupt hormonal balance. There is ZERO science to back that up. ZERO. Perhaps his wife had a soy allergy then? That’s the only realistic option for him to make this claim. I’m so sick of hearing from hacks who use bad studies and anecdotes to back up hypochondriac theories about food.

There are many diets that work the problem is they are hard to stay on or are not practical from too much food prep to specific or expensive ingredients.

Pete your probably lacking vitamins and minerals. Swap your steak for liver. Liver is nutrient dense, anti fatigue and and the worlds number 1 super food followed by kidneys. I eat OMAD, day lamb, liver, 1 day lamb kidneys, 1 day lamb heart and have to take vitamin and mineral supplements. Also add nutritional yeast for the B vitamins. Make sure you get your RDA of 1 gram sodium and 4.7 g of potassium and other minerals like magnesium and zinc and the trace mineral. Good luck!

A big part of the problem is that people are confused by misleading terms. There is NO reason for the term carbohydrate. It is all just a storage form (starch) or structure form (fiber) of sugar (Primarily Glucose). They are all just different arrangements of glucose molecules loosely bound together. The body is not dumb. It makes digestive enzymes to unzip the caloric ones, primarily sugar, and starches. The body uses sugar, not carbohydrate. Carbohydrate is not absorbed and utilized in the body in any way, but the sugar is. We need to call the major macro-nutrients what they really are: Fats, Protein and Sugar. Don’t let sugar hide disguised as “Carbohydrates”.

I think that the main reason diets fail is that they do not address the psychological, educational and environmental factors involved in obesity. When people are put into environments where exercise seems natural, and where eating fresh fruits and vegetables is practical and desirable, people don’t need to resort to weight loss surgery nearly as often. It is the urban poor who suffer obesity the most, and those in areas like the Deep South where unhealthy behaviors are culturally ingrained.

You don’t need to go on a special diet. And you don’t need drugs or bariatric surgery either. Just eat REAL food (you know, the stuff your great-great-grandmother would have recognized as food) and cook your own meals. What’s getting us sick, fat, tired and depressed is all the convenient stuff out there (processed and junk food high in sugar, trans fats etc.). The food industry has got us so brainwashed over the years that we have no clue what is good for us any more.

Do you really need a diet book to let you know that junk food is not healthful? I guess the low carb idea might be helpful for people who can’t tell the difference between a bag of oranges and a half gallon of ice cream. However, some of us know which of the two is a junk food and which is the health food despite both of them being codified as “high-carb” according to low-carb diet book authors.

So all farming that involves a harvester will result in the deaths of small animals (generally used on big farms that grow government subsidized GM soy and corn) and since the meat being eaten by almost every American is fed the majority of that soy, that means the majority of those deaths are on the meat industry’s head. And in case you don’t know, many vegans avoid soy and if you eat processed foods and/or supermarket meat, you’re consuming more soy than the average vegan. Much less land/vegetation is even used to feed one vegan than is used to feed one omnivore and the average small farm (usually selling produce at farmer’s markets) isn’t using a harvester though they may use other farm vehicles like tractors to easier plow the soil. I don’t know why people bring up this issue as though it’s a good argument against veganism. If anything, it’s an argument against big farms in general and the diet they are at the foundation of-the Standard American Diet. I was actually liking this Dave guy until he said that ignorant crap.

BMI Is an inacurate measure of Obesity as it is only a ratio of height to weight. It will show the same BMI for a fat person compared to a muscular weight lifter if the are both the same weight and height. You will get a better indication is you get a body fat analyser and identify how much percentage/visceral fat you have and how much lean muscle mass you have.
Many people are born with hernias. Being overweight makes it worse. They can also be triggered by benign growths in the abdomen.

If you are attacking BMI as an imperfect indicator of obesity, then I agree with you. But it is simple to calculate, doesn’t require expensive equipment, is used the world over, and correlates with important things like cancer risk and all-cause mortality. That’s why doctors use it.
Because fruits contain carbs and a lot of fibre. Fibre reduces the carb absorption. Fat cannot make you fat and farmers know this by fattening their live stock with low fat grains. A high sugar diet is a high fat diet. And the US do it best lacing everything with high fructose corn syrup. You want diabetes, obesity and heart disease, you got it.
Anyone that has to call their diet “bulletproof”, is probably a diet filled with holes and flaws.

The second gentle mans story was extremely touching. I have multiple mostly invisible disabilities and I face subtle unfair judgement daily (the difference between when I’m using crutches and not is unbelievable). I’ve often said that dealing with other peoples attitudes to my disposables is harder than dealing with the actual disabilities. Although I am a little overweight, I’m fairly average for the area I live in, so I can only imagine that for someone who is significantly overweight for the area they live in not only do they face those sorts of subtle unfair judgement everyday but probably also believe them, and that must make their lives sooo much harder. I think every overweight person needs to see that short talk.
I’ve currently worked at the Cheesecake Factory for 5 years. None of these issues are an issue. Food is still fresh, there are plenty of light options. It’s been consistently busy for a while. And quality wise, you get what you pay for. In one breath you say the cost is too high and in the same the portions are too big. I would imagine there are plenty of other chains way closer to closing than the Cheesecake Factory.
Its all gloom and doom at restaurants according to Mashed. Somehow they’re all still open and busy.

This is a shame. Cheesecake Factory is the only chain restaurant that has truly good food. And it seems their problems are everything I like about them! Most of what Dr. Carter says is accurate, but he does seem to have a bit of a bias toward his own particular specialty. Various weight loss surgeries can certainly benefit some seriously overweight people, but they do carry risks. Dr. Carter makes all drug based therapies seem particularly dangerous, but invasive surgery carries greater risk of death than almost all of the weight loss drugs available by prescription. That’s not to say surgery can’t be a good treatment for some, though.
Yak tea is novel, and has been a fad. But I’m a cold, physically challenging environment..can provide calories and fat storage for the time it is needed.

7 months into this lifestyle, 40 pounds down, 16 more to go, I have ZERO interest in sweets, ice creams, cakes, yuck! I can’t even imagine myself eating beans and tortillas or bread or corn or a banana…BUT…I still fantasize about mashed potatoes. A potato, maybe once or twice a year. I can see it in my near future. Our wheat is GMO theirs isn’t as much and they eat less carbs than we do, and that’s irrefutable (percentages do not equal sum totals, I know you wish they did but they don’t). In the book wheat belly the author talks about this.

According to the documentary “The World According to Monsanto”, NINETY-THREE PERCENT of soybean IS GMO (aka “Roundup Ready”). Although the the soybean industry is fighting hard against science, high consumption soybeans can impact thyroid function. As serious as this is, forget about that for the moment and think about this: A little soy here and there from time to time is not going to kill anyone. Nevertheless, you STILL have to consider that the main, active ingredient used on soybean crops was also used to make Agent Orange, and has been proven to cause cancers such as Non-Hodgkin Lymphoma, T-Cell Lymphoma, Leukemia, etc. Despite the fact that employment between Monsanto, EPA, and FDA, has been a revolving door and they have been helping each other, there have been multiple legal settlements awarded to victims of Monsanto / Bayer as a result of the of their RR-sprayed GMO soybeans, thus far that have been to the tune of $2.4 billion dollars, and you can bet that there will be more in the near future.
The smart thing to do is either to completely eliminate or at least reduce soy intake as much as reasonably possible. We know vegans want to use soy so badly, and stick only to its benefits while ignoring the risks, but when 93% of soy is not only GMO, but contaminated as well with dangerous chemicals on top other health concerns with soybeans themselves, regularly consuming large amounts of soy products is not a good idea. It is better to avoid consuming soy, and / or switch to quinoa, almonds, etc., for a main protein, even though they are much lower in BCAA’s to eggs, meat, chicken, and fish.
On a lighter note:

Rice contains fibre. Fiber also inhibits the absorption of some free fatty acids which reduces insulin response. No fast food contains fibre or else it wouldn’t be fast food..it would be very slow. There is an obesity epidemic of 6 month olds. High fructose corn syrup is added to the baby formulas. HFCS is cheap, tasty, increases the shelf life of food and is a replacement for low fat foods. Fat is delicious and food tastes like cardboard when you remove the fat.
God made food for everyone. But It seems Americans are eating not only their food but also on behalf of African n some Asian.
On a side note, maybe they could also start eating more exotic foods from rather thin cultures. Look at Japan, their food makes 90 years an average life expectancy!

Only in the U.S., with it’s excessive consumption of lard and dairy fat, could people believe that carbohydrates cause obesity. People in rural China or India who use rice as their dietary staple would have a good laugh if they knew that low-carb book authors have made millions of dollars claiming that rice causes obesity.
