Don’t use clips if your still a beginner or plan to learn tricks
Anyone else just wear a helmet, raincoat, t shirt, hoodie, trainers and joggers? I only came here cause everyone I see wears shorts but it’s cold in Wales so I kinda need pants
I use safety glasses but I put a treatment on the lens to help prevent fogging. it’s not perfect but works well enough for me. I have used goggles a lot through my offroad motorcycling career and used vented double pane lenses and they never fogged up on me ever. I live in north central WV and it gets really humid here and it can be a royal pain in the butt for fogging but the tricks I learned racing and riding dirt bikes still work for me.
5:56 the glasses name is Loops, not Nelson. They looks great on you!
Him ‘always bring a sunglass bag’. Forgets to mention a first aid kit
Awesome video thanks for the advice I’m trying to get into it this summer I’m also looking into kayaking do have any advice or tips in that department
I’m never going without first aid (importantly stick on sutures and large dressings, speaking from experience), knee pads, gloves and a phone, they’ll all save your ass in a bad crash some hex keys for readjusting anything that comes loose in a crash is also really important, a spare inner tube or tube repair kit, bike pump and/or CO2 and tyre levers I’d recommend but aren’t 100% necessary but would be very useful if riding quite a long distance which you can’t walk back to your car, a chain breaker tool and a quick link will serve well for repairing a snapped chain on the trails, everything I’ve listed, minus everything about tyre puncture is from personal experience or experiences of riding buddies within my last 3 mountain bike rides, stuff happens on the trail and to have the most fun it’s best to be prepared
Can I just say, that especially with bike park stuff, you need to be really REALLY careful taking hard things in a camelback type rucksack.
A friend of a friend is now paralysed from the waist down and has limited movement below the neck because he had a shock pump in the bag, fell hard on his back and broke his back badly where the gauge on the pump was.
He landed on rock and is absolutely sure he would have been okay without the pump.
I’m not saying don’t carry these things per say, just to be mindful of the risk there and take precautions and use common sense:)
Would be really great if this could be highlighted at some point on gmbn, as I don’t think it’s been mentioned and it’s something mountain bikers tend to forget. I know I did before I heard the story.
Many thanks all who read this far I hope it helps:)
Why don’t you buy a dji mavic Mini? I think it would give your Videos the Cherry on top espacially when you visit different countrys
Greetings from Germany
light enough, yea for sure, I am wearing a 1500g helmet, and now that feels light to me.
I use a pair of 100% dual lens goggles on the decents. They don’t fog at all even when I do the little breath to clean them on the inside. They don’t fog up at all. They do get really hot and it leaves a little sweat ring around my eyes but the one time I decided not to wear them I got to flies directly shot into both of my eyes going down single track. So they’re a must for me.
Flats are much better for beginners and pros, flats for life!
Looks like you have a carbon bike but you’re wearing clothes and have all the accessories on you, would that add weights to your bike?
I use some 16 dollar ranger shooting glasses with anti fog lenses. Been super humid no fogging and they look good! Found them on amazon
dude, if you earned a quarter, 25 cents per view, you would have made 13 million dollars by now.
My biggest issues with helmet’s, is that i end up wearing full on motor cross one, as i have the biggest head in the universe!
Have you ever tried buying a cap in XXXL Yes trip X L I have a XXL one that looks like i am wearing a child’s hat, and i put it on other peoples heads and it swamps them, and i am like thats not big enough for me, So if any one can point me to wards a MTB helmet, that will fit XXXL heads, 64cm around in the Uk that would be grate!
Já podiam era pôr legendas em português, para quem gosta e não percebe é mau.
Here in Wisconsin we don’t have mountains… But climbing some of these hills can’t imagine climbing something bigger.
Coffee(or tea) -> Ride -> Water -> Ride -> Water -> Ride -> BEER!!! =)
I’m saving up for a go pro and I don’t know what one to go for can you help me out GMBN
Yeah Brian a video of the stuff you pack as well would be great. Always useful to see what different riders pack. Look forward to that one
My 3 essential for the average rider at whistler are
1. Extra brake pads, you’ll find yourself on the brakes alot and good brakes gives you so much more confidence
2. A jumper/jacket. If your from a sunny part of the world and get cold easily you may find yourself getting cold from sweat and the wind on the chairlift back up especially on the top lift early in the season
3. A Spare set of forearms, failing that some kind of squishyball/arm strengthener/dencorub to relieve arm muscle cramp.
The last 2 can be compounded if you ride on the quiet days where you can almost ride upto the lift without a large wait in line
You are blessed to have the kind of body that clothes fit perfectly on! Perfect white guy proportions ; )
good info….I also eat a couple of bananas before I go out…the potassium is good for the heart and reduces muscle cramping
“brakes”….brakes come ON the bike:/
Why not throw in oxygen there too
the disturbing part is that I bought a bike about a week ago…I didn’t research it…I didn’t post about it on social media…and yet YouTube suggested mountain biker for beginners. that’s a little weird. but fuckit…so what.
Why i almost never get punctures?(1 time a year) I ride schwalbe tires and normal inner tubes.
They cost the same as Oakley and they are trying to compete against them.
what bike brands do you recommend that arent expensives but are good?
Also, you need something to protect your frame from getting hit by the chain! Important when you jump a lot. Otherwise the paint comes off and it’ll look ugly.
13:19 expect it to get some wear when it’s been about 3 years, I have a review of the the 16L enduro FR backpack on my website, I show how worn it got of course.
The most worn things were the the Velcro, it was not working, zippers, the zipper on the phone compartment failed, the thread that held the coil in plaice failed, it probably wore so fast due to me taking phone in and out of it so often to take photos, the material of the backpack, in the compartments I could see thee wear.
Now I use Neo 16L, i like the new back protector, it’s external, and keeps the back cooler, it’s not a gimmick it actually works.
the backpack you show here also look like it would be pretty cool, apart from lower back where the big thing is.
Thanks for the info! My new canondale is arriving this week! ☺️ I’m going to try to keep the gear to a minimum since it’s already hot in AL and I’m very heat sensitive. But I think I’ll take your suggestion about the shin guards.
Went on my first ride for probably ten years. 3-4 hours of both trails and road. I didn’t wear gloves. I wish I wore gloves.
This is a great video! I have been wanting to create outfits for different conditions and this video was educational. I really like your presentation style as well.
I am huge on safety so would a full face helmet with goggles be better then a regular helmet
My only advice is to not go to Lowe’s and get glasses but to get proper mtb glasses
Never used backpack, gloves, glasses, and helmet.
Fuck Yea.
what about on top, should i be wearing short sleevs, elbow pads or what. (thx in advance)
Haven’t you already did a video about this?
Edit: oh it was ”What to wear at a bike park”
I’m just about to start mountain biking this Spring and Summer, here in Scotland. This video is really helpful, and I had no idea about clip ons, looks like there is still a lot to learn. Anyway, great video, mate.
Small first aid kit. Fits comfortably in my back pack. Have 2 pairs of medical gloves in too.
Come to Colorado, where some of the bike shops serve beer:D
Evoc back packs are awesome!!! Still have my Enduro blackline
I have heard that a 27.5″ inner tube will also fit on 26″ and 29″ wheels in a pinch. I have never had to test this though thankfully.
One more essential item pistol for bear, cougar, wolves etc.
Honestly there is just no need for this shit I just wear a shirt shorts and a 40 dollar helmet like this is just not needed
Running down the trail
That fatty session with Martyn was great. Need to do another one of those.:)
Thanks guys, as I’m going to les gets next week, what trails would you suggest?
good stuff, I’ve got a LOUD air horn, it communicates to people that don’t speak my language, or have ear buds in. Many bipeds actually thank me.
I use the smith rover you should try that its very comfortable
For glasses I personally recommend Oakley flak 2.0 Xl for glasses to ride with having the polarized versions helps tremendously. They come in different prism technologies for trail ridingand I like how they enhance the colors along with having polarisation to reduce glares I think they make a great combination and bonus the lenses are replaceable so if you scratch them you can replace them in the all plastic frame pops apart and disconnects so they are extremely difficult to break.
My goggles saved my eye today. Big rock came flying at my eye, and there’s a big dent on the lens, but I’m ok. It’s important!
Tld helmet actually offer a lot of protection according to Virginia Tech. I really love mine although I don’t have the full face one yet. I will be getting one soon.
Also some extra batteries for the Go pro or flashlight take up almost no room at all, and keep your gear running longer.
Do you find yourself leaving essentials or are you always taking tonnes that you don’t need? Let us know in the comments
I’ve rode supercross and motocross for almost 20 years… You know there’s spray and wipes you can buy that keep riding goggles from fogging right?.. They are cheap and work very well.. I’ve used it for years on my goggles
Whoop strap sounded cool until i realized it’s a membership base kind of thing. Wish it was a one time thing instead of monthly
Look at goodr sunglasses if you want glasses like the ones you want
nice video, like the idea of Whoop… but at a membership ($16-$300)for a year or a month I feel its just another additional cost to biking/lifestyle… shame really is a good idea
I have a rather precise question: Despite being useful and of course a must have for riding trails and the like, what would be the benefits of riding without gloves? For instance, I play some golf as well and hiting the links without glove helps your grip feel, club control and all around strengthens the hands. Is it the same rationale I should consider for biking? Cheers!
POC spin technology is scientifically INSANELY more protective for your brain than some plastic that moves 2mm(MIPS). Why would you tell people to think otherwise when it’s proven and you are a “professional”… lost all respect for you because of this video.
I still get mud and bugs in my eyes with my 100% goggles on, dont ask me how, but it happens.
good little vid, just started myself myself, found it pretty usefull to watch this, thumbs up!
Does anyone else think he’s just trying to show us his six pack?
Thanks for the heads up on eye protection, been in the market for a new pair and because of this video, Ryders will be my next pair!
I always ride with glasses. They have ranged from cheap to moderately priced, normally sport oriented glasses (wraps around the face), and a few have been safety glasses. Generally speaking (there have been one or two exceptions), the only times I’ve had problems with fogging is in cold weather at a stop or wearing a baclava over my mouth. I have switched to Smith googles for winter rides which has solved that problem. My daughter, on the other hand, has the same problem as you. We have tried moving them further away from her eyes to get more ventilation, but to no avail. We are currently looking for a pair of glasses for her. We’ll have to check these guys out.
How about a good first aid kit or do you have a first aider?
Am I the only one to notice Brian gets hella serious when he is modeling any of the items he wears like all smiles then puts on sunglasses to model no smile no emotions at all hahaha. Still a good video anyway, always makes good content.:)
Great advice. Does that multitool include a chain breaker? Otherwise how are you going to attach the spare missing link?
Just had to get 12 stitches up my shin because i slipped a pedal. I want to get some good shin and knee pads now, what would you recommend
Just watched this Neil always sunny here in Perth Australia, so you might need to wear those sunnies if you get a ride over here! Have you actually worn them in England? Oops…….haha
I’ve been looking for something like these in RX. I’ll definitely give them a shout. Thanks!
i would like to buy a Canondale. New to mountain biking can you advice me should buy catalyst or trail?
I feel everyone overestimates what you need to get into mountain biking
Bike
Pump
Helmet
(Optional)small backpack to hold phone, bottle ext.
#1 toilet paper just in case, I always keep some in a Ziploc bag in my walking and hiking packs, the Ziploc bag can also be used to protect your phone if the rain gets so heavy your pack is filling with water…….I’ve known people to keep their phone in a condom when hiking in torrential rain so maybe an idea for us mtbers.
I’m one sad, really sad mountain biker. I live in flatlands. Southern part of Slovakia, anything above 3m (10ft) is considered as a hill here. A have to travel 50km (30mi) to have some hills, even more if I want a single track. I’m a mountain biker since i was 15, now 43. I still have Zero mtb friends, riding the unpaved roads in the country in the last 20 years, alone. Who would buy a mountain bike here in the south? Only me. I like beer and I have a multitool, things are good then, i guess.:) I want to believe there is somebody else like me, riding the flatlands, alone.:)
great video! just bought a beginners bike and this helped. stay safe
Hi Brain, From the Netherlands, i was wondering what backpack I would buy. I bought the EVOC pro 30l thank to your advice. If it survive your adventures than it wil survive a life time:-)
If i had a dime every time I made fun of a roadie I would be able to buy a new bike
I never thought about first aid kit i the backpack. Thanks man.
Like the humble way to present it and really honest advice on what to carry when biking, Cheers!
Can live without
Snacks (eat once a day or at worst a 4 hour window and no added sugar)
Trails ok, well not MTB specific but one can find many trails in the forest. They can be quite a tech challenge too, getting round and between rocks and trees.
Mountains as long as there are inclines one can get speed on and I am not on a road I’m happy.
Friends riding friends, well fun sometimes but other times I like to chill on the bike and not be social.
Beer After sugaring yourself up on snacks you then want to dehydrate yourself on beer??? Where’s my Vodka?
Do need –
Mountain Bike
Somewhere off road
Multi Tool
Water
Brakes or things break when you crash
Helmet and at least knee pads.
Fun.
My $14 safety glasses have an anti fog coating. Works perfect. And photochromic lenses. They get dark in the sun, light in the shade
Alpinestars makes a combo shin & knee pad very comfortable and love mine because I can pull longer socks up and tuck under the shin pad to completely cover your lower legs for a bit of abrasion protection. Really reduces the number of cuts and scrapes on your lower legs.
You saved the best till last…. well played!!!!! Stay Safe Everyone
External batery for your phone, at least 2000 or 3000 mA, just in case… is quite cheap and who knows when you or your fried need some “power”
Mudguards cost 9 quid and I don’t get stuff thrown into my eyes… glasses are pretty overrated
I gotta question, u said u went bought safety glasses to keep bugs from hitting u in the face, well i wear perscription glasses. So what do i do about that? By the way, i bought my first mountain bike last year, its a marlin 7 by Trek.
Item thirteen spare cellphone battery can’t call anyone if the phone is dead
from my experience you need 3 things: a bike, a friend, and his bike… so he could carry you when front wheel and handles become 2 separate pieces and you end up in a WALL OF CACTUS!!! it’s been 11 years now and i still haven’t forgiven those cactie! (cactuses?)
Don’t have mountains here in the Netherlands and neither did Seth in Florida. Doesn’t stop you from riding hard. And I hate beer.
I think that Fenix watches from Garmin track more sleep data (stuff like REM, light and deep sleep)
I use Bolle Tracker II goggles with prescription inserts, they are dirt cheap (£12 uk) keep the crap out of your eyes and are well enough vented to not steam up as long as you’re moving.
I got a tinted set and an amber set for low light and transfer the inserts between them.
I’d say gloves are a higher priority than knee pads, or do they assume gloves are a given?
Very disappointed in this ad video Josh. I am a new subscriber, liked you but not this product endorsement.
Bruh all my mtb friends have deleted Instagram everyone that’s interesting has realized how stupid it is….
And that’ll be a legit 1500$ less in what’s left of your wallet after buying the bike!:’D
Wow! I’ve never seen a video like this before, well done!
How about knee pads for when you crash, a pump and tube repair kit and a multi-tool?
good vid, though I the three other most important things I carry aside from a multitool are a headlamp/bike light, small med kit with trauma bleeding kit and matches and lighter.
I always have a small backpack with two water bottles, and another bottle in the bottle cage. I use a small pump and a cateye velo computer. A 600 lumen axion lazer light and a small red tail light along with a saddle bag filled with lots of tools and a patch kit. I also keep a spare tube in my pack as I don’t ride tubeless.
Need mountains to be mountainbikers Everyone in Holland or Denmark says hi.
When you hear a mountainbiker can’t live without mountains and you live in holland.
I agree with all of these except for social media. I like your vids, but definitely don’t need (or have) twitbook, instapost or nugs.
Pro tip: send this video to a riding buddy and just take him/her on the ride so you can keep yourself light
Wondering here what you would pay on average taking all this with you when travelling by plane?
I don’t like beer but I like buds!
…and I don’t have friends:(
😉
Doddy is a good addition to the crew. Seems very straightforward and down to earth, has good delivery.
I got a six pack of safety glasses at Sam’s Club for about $13. For a bit more than $2 a pair I got six pairs of eye protecting glasses that protect my eyes safely and reliably. They provide UV protection as well. I have some expensive sunglasses, but most of the trails here are under forest canopy, so clear eye protection is a plus.
Thanks for the video. Hoping to get into it all this spring!
Definitely nice change to see you using an aluminum bike rather than carbon.
Definitely need protection in Whistler lol might catch something u can’t get rid of
Anything with UV protection that is comfy and don’t slide when sweaty. If riding in humidity, apply spit and wipe before each ride.
You’re not wearing a neck tie so unbutton the top button on your shirt.
How did this guy forget the kickstand? Every beginner rider needs one.
I’m eleven so now I really want to go to whistler but my dad would probably say no
Where I’m from you’re an asshole if you ride in the rain lol.
The stage is an enduro helmet made for big days and whatnot, it is meant to be ventilated
I don’t always use riding glasses but when I do I use pink ones for low loot conditions
I’ve got the same TroyLee helmet but I’m looking for a GoPro mounting solution. Can you explain how you have yours set up on there? Btw, what eyewear would you recommend for a guy with glasses?
Those thin latex gloves. Stop you getting filthy, and can also be used under bike gloves in very cold weather.
The number one thing we can’t live without is biking! If you’re stuck inside due to current events, stay safe and chat to other riders in the comments and our social media!
Bad advise on the clippless peddles. Need to get your skills up before you clip in. Bunny hoping and other skills needs to be learnt the right way.
If you are just getting into MBing, you will have more crashes as you try new things and because skills are not well developed. At least that is what I encountered. I suggest minimum items are: 1) Good helmet (full face is better). A head banging crash is always unexpected. Someone I know went OTB with a half helmet-shattered his jaw, bit half his lip off, knocked out 4 teeth and himself. 2) Good knee and elbow pads, gloves-going down in a rock garden can really bruise you up. I crashed in the chunk, whacked my elbow on a rock-I was hurting for about 4 weeks. I went to an Army-Navy surplus store-got military grade e and k pads for cheap. When you crash your first contact points with the ground are usually your head, face, elbow/forearms, knees-not necessarily in that order but…
10:36 they got acquired by Worldwide Cyclery. it was mentioned in a recent video.
Don’t worry they are not gone.
I haven’t tried their stuff.
Got no mountains here in Florida. We figured out how to shred anyway!
I dont agree with Number 2. I live in Florida a very very flat state and we make it work…. What we do is very much considered Mountain Biking! Love you anyway!
I feel like a lot of us mountain bikers come on these videos to just disagree with joeys xD
my led lenser lamp(that i fucking lost on a school trip 3 years ago…)would light up the whole forest
where can i buy that long sleeve t shirt he’s wearing looks really nice
Hand wash your knee pads with some “Sport Wash” from Amazon. It will breakdown the sweat and grime in the fabric and leave your gear without any odor. NATHAN NS1344 Power Sport Wash Detergent 64 oz Bottle https://www.amazon.com/dp/B06VWC75SG/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_aSc5Db4S5FG0G
I got gifted some Oakley’s that I am in love with. It came with replacement lenses that I can change depending on how much tint I want. I have full sun polarized, yellow and blueish tints, and clear ones. They have never fogged on me.
I also like that they rest on your nose but also a little on your forehead. I like that alot because if something ever hits me the impact will be on my forehead and not just my nose.
How did you get that crankbros f15 multitool? I was only able to get it on Black.
My Scott knee guards are stacked in my nuclear containment bag, I clean them but the smell is impossible to get away so I sometimes just powder them witch stain free deodorant
Lights? High-Viz (breathable/waterproof) jacket? Gold standard lock? Alan keys? Adjustable? Tape? Telephone? Some cash? Puncture repair kit? Pump? Spare inner tube? Or have done with that and go for tubeless ready rims/wheels before you make a bike purchase.
Beer is not essential! What is essential is a proper high five after a nice descent. Or maybe a little slap on the bum XD
Those shin guards fuck8ng save you when you crash. My opinion you should get another pair of shin or knee pads after they wear out. Good video tho
My eyes tend to water up because of wind getting on them and glasses don’t help so I had to resort to Scott goggles, and I’ve loved it ever since, I look stupid sometimes but it helps me
my Schwinn 26 function wireless computer and cell phone mount for map my ride not a strava fan
I wondered if doddy was a light packer… Now i know he’s not!
I was told as a beginner to stick with flat paddles as clip-less can teach bad habits and are harder to bail on.
What to bring when Mountain Biking
1.)Helmet and maybe shin guards, elbow pads, body armour, neck protector.
2.) Water bottle holders (and a squirtable water bottle that fits)
3.)Suntan Lotion, Bug Spray (depends on where your going)
4.)Protein Snacks
5.)First Aid Kit
6.) Someone Else (a friend or family member)
7.) Some form if eye protection
8.)Some form of backpack
9.)Watch
10.) Cheap Lock
11.) Some form of
Navigation
12.) Gloves
13.) Bike Repair Kit
14.) Phones and rechargeable batteries for them
15.) Helmet Mounted Camera EX: GoPro
16.)The right kind of bike
17.)Good reliable equiptment
18.) Music is fun
Hope this list helps (it was in no particular order and some was unnecessary but good) Btw this video is great.
bro you can afford all that gear but other people cant like me i would love to have all that gear someday but sometimes you just need to stick with what you got
Toilet paper and a basic medkit. Also some cash, you never know.
if you ride trails out west, include the cost of a gun that can drop a mountain lion and or grizzly.
Great video Chris . I’m a beginner and didn’t really know what I needed to buy to get out on the trails. Now I do, thx.
I always tend to find that when i ride flats, my feet slip off forward when it does happen. So my calves get banged up rather than my shins
Personally I would buy some better flat pedals and some skate shoes, as this can be cheaper and far better for confidence.
dosent it make no footer tricks harder? do they clip in n out real quick?
14:56 since you dont use as much why dont you do maybe a giveaway of the bag?(if you do it do it world wide)
Oh Blake, what an interesting video! My daughter is really into mountain biking, I am roadie.
That’s why when you find something you really love like that fleece but 2 or 3 of it.
Nice video, thanks!
Way back I had the same fear with the shins haha.. glad i overcome it!
2 important extra things: an extra derailleur hanger and a gear cable. They wheight grams and you’ll thank god (or someone else) to have them with you 😉
This stuff too expensive for me! I am broke boy (14 years old) lol but nice video!
I once bonked so hard that when I finally got to the trailhead table, I hate trail mix and then fell asleep while eating. Baffled many riders going through
Hot tip with the straps on your backpack mate…… I was in the army and we would roll up the excess, flatten it and wrap it in electrical tape. That way it does not flap around and if you ever need more length you can take the tape off and unravel it.
Hope that helps!
I use Rx Wiley X when I ride. I like the brand mainly because they support our troops and I think they have a good product. Even if I didn’t need prescription lenses I would still use eye protection. It did take me a while to find an anti-fog method that worked good enough to keep my lenses mostly clear. I don’t believe there is a truly anti-fog treatment out there to keep lenses totally fog free.
If you don’t carry a full headlamp etc. then at least carry a cheap front and rear LED light – so if / when you get eventually caught out after sunset (or in a storm) you can get home (reasonably) safely.
I have bad eye site I need to we’re glasses and they are called transition lenses and tint and go clear go to your local eye were stor and they could get you a pair they don’t fog
you get 8 hours sleep and you think you are overstraining your body?
13:29 You might have gotten a too big size, but to me it looks fine, they just did this to make sure people with beer belly can wear it, mine also has this, but not a problem for me, it pretty much looks the same when I wear it.
if this is too much of a problem, size down, Evoc has several sizes, it’s not a one size fits all, like USWE for example.
you should have looked into this before buying it, measure your upper body, and then try it if it did not fit, send it back and try smaller size.
Tube repair kit
First aid kit
Energy bars
Map
Headlamp
want to ride without camel back and dont know how to bring equipment with me so any tips
Can you please tell me what brand and model is the little waist bag?
i would avoid the peddles at first, and maybe forever. a beginner doesnt need the extra frustration of having their feet “attached” to the bike, you want to be able to put your foot down without any interference.
nice bike trail you got out there sir. I enjoy the view since i cannot go to places you’ve been sir. Im from the Philippines.
I’m a xco rider and I have a pair of Oakleys that don’t fog at all on my rides
why are you such a noob.. god try the millions of mtb glasses out there you tard.
#gmbn guys can you please come to the DH park in kranjska gora,Slovenia?
Oakley Racing Jacket with anti-mist spray never fog up, also have good vents built in & also can buy after market changeable lenses for 10-15 bucks have tried lots of different designs, trust me, these are awesome, been using them for years and can get renewed lenses whenever I want they NEVER mist up when using spray, will last an entire day of riding with one application of spray can’t recommend them enough.
@GMBN PLEASE MAKE A VIDEO WITH @SkillswithPhil AT WHISTLER I THINK THAT WOULD BE A VERY INTERESTING VIDEO
Great vid, I’m about to pick up a used bike and wanted an idea of what else to think about. The pedals and the shin guards are what I would have never thought about. I ride dual sports, so I’ve got gloves and a backpack that will work well already, so that was good input too.
I live in the plains and ride trails… Does that mean I’m a plain trail rider, who loves beer? Who doesn’t love beer?
I m planning to start mountain biking(guess whats that called) any beginner tips?
Here’s a tip for you, remove that disgusting piercing from ur nose. That is the ugliest thing ive seen in a long time
Got a pair of mechanics gloves from harbor freight for 5 bucks.they work great! Save the money!
I am riding in a lot of slippery and muddy conditions and I tempt to fall a lot,are clips any good for me?
gloves are a must in cold climates, 15 minutes, out there without them, or as long as you are fit to. ( unless you like pain and rigid hands)
Hi I am from India I do not miss any video of you please give me your contact no
Didnt know of this doddy at all before he came to gmbn, like him alot, has a fire gram too
I haven’t rode a bike for probably around 8 years or so and am interesting in getting into MTB, any beginner tips like how/where to buy equipment, recommended bike, gloves, helmet, bike sizing etc. Would be greatly appreciated!
You may want to bring an derailleur hanger for your bike it will suck if one breaks and the bike shop doesn’t have one specific to your bike.
You forgot to mention you need a spare frame, you know, just in case lol.
I only ride park.
(lets make the lyrics in the comments, dont let me down team. )
Those glasses look ridiculous . They all look ridiculous.
I really liked Whoop so much until I got the message, “excessive self pleasuring is significantly affecting your recovery time in a negative way.”: (
As a xc rider its not that much, but as a enduro or dh rider you can easyly spend like 300 to 500€ at least on protection gear, shoes and clothing.
I was about to subscribe but then
I realised I was already subscribed
Mm… I don’t ride at night, don’t go for longer trip, wherever i go i got tools in my pick up… don’t have a youtube channel and sure enough I won’t have it..why am i even watching this video? Lol
Don’t go clipless…:/ clipless is for road bikes… not mountain bikes. Flat is faster, and safer for beginners.
bringing all this stuff is unnecessary where are you going to keep a spare tire
First aid kit, cell phone. There’s always the possibility something happens. In any emergency a cell phone is essential to warn any help. A first aid kit (brought along by the rider at the rear, for obvious reasons) may help to tackle the smaller problems at hand.
Dang, master class! Now where did the cash for my cargo freight go…
I feel like god created you to look good in most of this stuff and not look like a tool.
I bought my helmet 2 years ago for 50$ and I have had a few light crashes, I really don’t see how a very similar helmet can cost 4 times as much, I get that if you want it to be a bit lighter or a bit more comfortable you would spend a little more, but I’ve worn two hundred dollar helmets and personally don’t think they are worth it, as well as with the riding glasses, you can buy a decent pair of sport glasses that will stay on well and keep gunk and uv rays from hurting your eyes for under 75$, so again how are the 250$ glasses worth 3 times more,
Blake: Welcome back you beautiful people!
Me: Oh its blake! (automatically clicks like button)
I look at this awesome “how to jump” video, then I think “there must be some nice accessories for MTB”, and then there you are again with another awesome video! Thanks!
Very nice video doddy, I had to turn off mountain bike adventures now your not on it and go straight to GMBN vids. Great work from you all
I love how your video are useful, entertaining, casual yet professional! Love it!
wooo I do like the hip back very nice.. I only go out with a seat bag so that’s very appealing
Yes I use them or else I get bugs in my eyes. No there are no eye wear that do not fog. Interesting if that particular brand is true to what you say if so great, but I am not interested in try and error anymore.
Cool! Have you every done a “Electronics/Video gear you use” video”? Might make for great content on how you film and process.
Hi. Loved the video. Clear, concise and well presented. Fab! Many thanks.
my wife and i pack so much stuff on our blue mountain trips i have to strap the kids to our Jeeps roof:)
a derailleur hanger is a must, we learned the hard way. great video.
My load out:
Multi tool with patch kit.
Small pump with pressure gauge
Water bottle.
Protein bar and energy bar
Wind breaker
And of course my mobile.
those pedals are mainly for road bikes, definitely not for beginners…. if you’re beginning to ride and want to ride clipped the Crank Brothers Mallot are the best……..
with that syncross pump, pump it really hard and fast onece and the stress relief bit pops out
Never buy a Garmin. Useless piece of shit for the price. Got a Garmin 510 and it fails at recording every few rides. Just use strava on your phone.
If you are older and getting into biking I would highly recommend getting a full suspension bike. I rode a hard tail (only front shocks) for about 9 years and switched to full suspension (front and rear shocks) this past year and it has increased my riding by saving my back. Worth the extra money to not have a sore back. Tried to get my husband to switch when he bought a 29er, now he wishes he has made the additional investment because his back gets worn out. (We are 49 and 52). Lots of people our age riding so get out there and have some fun! If your investing in a bike you can get a full suspension decent bike for about $1300. Also check with your bike shop and find out if they will demo bikes so you can try some out before you buy.
#sponseredvid good vid man but don’t get too much of a slave for money
Can i use my motorcycle helmet (nolan n53 practice replica 1.300kg) as a dh helmet?
Rain-X antifog, shave cream, Dawn dish soap, catchup antifog lens cleaner. They can all do a good job of keeping lenses fog free.
I can’t live without mountains too, shame I live in the flatland of the NETHERLANDS aaaarghhh……..
You don’t need to worry too much abt tools or a shock pump bc you can always find that at the rental shops or at the tool stations. But I still always carry a multi tool and a tube on the trail for quick touchups and emergencies
i use a little co2 pump not the nozzle…. it’s just a bit easier and more effective
Big nose advice: 100% and hilx eyewear goggles don’t fit as close to your face as other brands like oakley, melon and smith. Pretty much removes the problem for me as it doesn’t pinch my nose
What small and large multi tool would people recommend getting and also a good pump with both tire valves. And where is lock and helmet in the video and you defiantly need a pair of gloves
In Southern California we ride with bells. So we scare away wild animals and notify hikers that we are coming.
thanks for the suggestion, I’m going to Whistler Bike Park today and I’m renting a bike from Arbutus Bikes and I’m definitely going to be picking up the polarized glasses when I go there, can’t wait to try them out, going to be so much fun.
i live in SoCal, Ill mostly never need any winter gear. Sucks cuz i enjoy winter season, i like cold weather more than summer. ill get a lot of hate from my fellow SoCal neighbors for that lol
I’ll take All your hand me downs I’m The Same size as you,,,,
Our version of Rei in UK is probably mountain warehouse. I literally have 10 of their fleeces that cost a fiver each. I swear they are the same as my £130 quid Patagonia version!
I prefer not to have a backpack full of compressed gas cylinders so I’ll stick to the little pump.
I don’t mind the look. I’ll have to see if they do prescription though… I need that. So right now I’m stuck riding with my Ray Ban prescription aviators. Crashing and scratching them would be very expensive though:-( Thanks for the honest review!
Great video super helpful getting my new mtb bike in two days not had one since I was 10 so 7 years ago
Ditch the back pack get frame strap two bottle cages lower centre of gravity save your back for longer rides
Shouldn’t use clipless on a mountain bike, its dangerous. Many of the top pro’s use flats. Don’t believe the hype, totally pointless.
#ask gmbn do you think I should train at my local park? I’m only 10 yrs old and gmbn you guys are the best thanks for all
I have six of them,I bought them by myself and I am only 12 years old
I think nobody mention helmet, probably the most important item
is there any chance to get a mountain biking lesson from you guys? that would be cool
if going on a long ride should i bring 1 or 2 spare inner tubes,
I would get knee pads more than shin guards and you need to drop kick who ever told u to get the clip less pedals
Don’t forget mountain bike gloves is one but mountain bike gloves also might not be a to get think
Tube or patches. Also will you post a vid on how to adjust pre load on RockShox Sektor Silver
great topic. But colour me skeptical about how they’ll perform in Nov-March here in the PNW. I kinda don’t trust anything yet for anti fog, having tried lots. I remember when Ryders were the cheap glasses, lol, guess they got some cred now.
I have always a pair of medical gloves with me. Just to keep my super cool gloves clean, when I have a mechanical…
Bike stoke level: high! Another great reason to wear a light colored helmet is to reflect more sunlight and heat during warm weather rides. I ran into you when I was MTBing in Aubrun in 2018 or 2019 cheers.
Also I don’t mean to be adversely opinionated about hillbillies because I definitely am 1I just wouldn’t always trust my opinion as a hillbilly when it comes to safety haha
Good tips…always a good refresher for gear. Like the tape idea!
I had my mountain bike stolen early Feb, and I missed it so much
Not even kidding, I was running on the trails, exactly as Blake was, just to get some trail time:-(
Next video will be how to get sponsor to pay for overweight baggage.
I don’t know what it is but I can never make my self go down stairs on a bike don’t no why
I’ll go anywhere on anything. Just give me zip pockets and a backpack. I’ll be fine lol. Rode 30 miles on a litre and a half of juice and 20 miles to enfield on a can of 330ml KA. As long as i got good storage i’ll ride #EconomicVeteran
I use prescription sport glasses since I’m nearsighted. But no tint, since going from sunnny to dark forest in 2 seconds is kind of problematic. And they fog a lot here in the tropics.
Energy bars and means of communication or to send a distress call if out by yourself and no mobile coverage.
If you are new to mountain biking 1 you do not need pads really unless you’re doing downhill at a park and 2 DO NOT GET CLIP PEDALS when you are a beginner it will develop really bad habits and you won’t be able to learn skills like bunny hopping right with clips and unless you are great at balancing then you WILL fall over several times and it will hurt untill you get used to them
Great editing but I did not come here as a beginner MBR to hear that the first “essentials” are a bike, mountains, and inflated tires. No sh!%. This is seriously stupid and a waste of time. Is this satire?
that cold beer with your mates at the end of the ride is the greatest thing ever
you dont deserve a like. you should have your own originality, dont take other people’s ideas!
We don’t have mountains in Finland. Specially here in the southern parts it’s just cross-country with some enduro-like piece of trail gems scattered here and there. In Bike parks you can probably get a top to bottom run in a 60 seconds In fact the finnish word for mountain biking doesn’t have “mountain” in it, it would translate back to “terrain biking”. Still, I love it!
At 2:07, Doddy says, “If you are riding outside the POC you don’t want something so hot and heavy…”. Shouldn’t you have your head inside the POC?
I want a bike like him but my parents never bought me a bike
This ad like video is super amateurish. You can buy anti fog goggles from 100% for under 60$ no problem.
You forgot a spare part that everybody should have at home. Mech hanger spare!
It’s easy to have a crash in a bike park and if you ruin you mech hanger and your rear deraileur, probably you can get a deraileur easily in any local shop but mech hangers is another story.
I bought a second new bike just to keep locked in my oversized suv incase i need more rep points to front the trail pimps that also bought extra everything to do everything and go everywhere yet dont ride further than 5 miles away. Did i win yet???
Why when you ride with clips its called clipless? Still to this day it confuses me
Blake is the funniest dude on your channel, oh and I drink beer before riding:)
Strippers, how do we incorporate strippers into mountain biking?
To put on a fullface, go face first and roll it on. You can also roll it off by lifting the face bar up and roll it back.
A 24” inner tube will expand to fit in a 29er. In a pinch it works and it will get you back to the car. FYI for reduced weight.
I cant live without beer after a ride too 😉 Coffee and Beer! 😉
Ok buddy cliples pedals don’t have a clip cliples pedals have no clip
We aren’t fueling ourselves for the day. The idea that we need peri-workout nutrition is ridiculous. Eat real food, not processed junk.
bike, helmet, water bottle, fingerless gloves, eyewear, air pump, extra tubes, good backpack with a waist strap, bike tools. do not invest in clipless from start, if later after you get used to the bike you think maybe it is worth it find a way to test clipless without spending the cash for them, then make the decision on it.
BKXC, you’re obviously not a four seasons rider. Apart from the fleece and rain jacket I totally missed autumn or winter gear in this presentation like windstoppers, gilets, softshells or thermo jerseys.
i like to carry fuel of some sort, weather it’s shot bloks or a fig bar. Just something for a longer ride.
Hey bro I am from india and I want your t shirt but it is not available.
4:53 I get it happens to everyone at some point but if you get a decent pair of flat pedals with good screws for grip you don’t often get it to be honest.
Thanks for all the information on glasses. I use cheap fishing glasses from Walmart. Work great and don’t fog. To bad these glasses are so expensive
You make the world a better place Blake, not just for Mountain Biking. Thank you for every video you do or are part of.
If you were to wreck, an ace bandage can save you life, I carry one of those!
I’m gonna ride a MTB offroad for the first time this weekend…
what do I need?
Jersey, shorts, gloves, helmet, kneepads…
I disagree with the backpack as I think there cumbersome and hinder your ability to ride but that’s just my opinion and I guess it’s personal opinion
There are anti-fog sprays, and they work, to a point. Most helmets have holes that can securely hold the glasses while you climb. When done with climbing, you can easily get the glasses off the helmet and put them on with one hand. Once in motion, they need very little airflow to keep the fog off them. Some glasses (Oakley Flight Jacket) have clever nose piece that lets you adjust the glasses so they stay further from your face, improving the breathing. It works to a point, but if you combine all of the steps: the nose piece, the antifog, the ventilation from speed and taking the glasses off when you stop you won’t get issues with fogging.
Hi guys! Love the show, but…. Can you make more cross country content and enduro? Please?
My city doesn’t have mountains or even hills and my country barely has any relief. ☹️
Damn there’s no way I could turn my biking wardrobe into a 20 min video. Lol
Please tell me what pressure in the wheels you swing in the summer?
You can tell gmbn is starting to run out of ideas. Top things a mountain biker can’t live without: a mountain bike
CO2 and a backup pump? If I’m carrying a pump, why do I need the CO2?
Thank you for your video I am just Thinking about getting into mountain biking again. I took it up about 20 years ago I purchased a bike and some equipment And I went on a few rides Then shortly after that my wife Informed me she was pregnant. An unexpected pregnancy took Up most of my free time for quite some time after that. Anyway I still have my original bike which is still in almost perfect condition It is a little outdated which doesn’t bother me but the fact it has regular Pole breaks in not disgrace concerns me in a wonder if you think that is a real serious issue. I think there are probably other people I could ask in other Web pages I could go on but your honesty and sincerity Made me want to ask you and I feel I would have more respect for your opinion Then some other whiskey driven hillbilly opinion. Thanks again I look forward to more videos And hopefully your opinion on the brakes Sincerely Steven Rogers
Would love some video of pros talking bout entry cost bike which brands to look for hardtails etc im a heavy tall lad looking for a bike but not got 1000 pound to a bike
Hi agree this is a good kit but I also carry a small first aid kit important piece for me!
If your helmet is hard to put on its prob because it’s too small
hi guys witch company do you think makes better bikes? mondraker or pivot cycles…. and between the mondraker dune carbon xr and the pivot firebird witch one do you think is more capable?
also bring a pocket knife with you while going to a ride. the knife can help you to cut something and also can be used as a weapon when you got into some trouble.
Ok I’ve been biking for years giant jumps and everything. I never bought shin guards they’re a total waste of money and if you slip your foot and you get cut deal with it and save the flippen money. In my opinion all beginners should use platform pedals so if you fall you can put your foot out fast without having to shift your foot around.
I like ESS, the military brand of Oakley. Really nice, durable and don’t fog.
Ryders are so stoked on the video they wanted to pass along a 20% off code and free shipping! Use the code “DailyMTBRider-20off”
oh my… I’m from a third world country and I’m saving money to try some other trails like whistler but it seems that I need two lives to make it happen, first life is to buy those item and second is to enjoy biking.
Just got me a Diamondback Outlook on Craigslist. Dont have much gear and hearing your words, Just Go Ride is awsome.
Anti fog glasses have been around for years. This is nothing new.
Have you ever used the Garmin forerunner watch instead of a cycling computer?

Every riding glasses video on youtube is an ad. I guess I’ll end up just buying some and going the trial and error route.
Do anybody know how to clean goggles (probably) because after I clean them they look worse than before I cleaned then especially the inside. And well the inside is much more dirty than the outside.

I was thinking you forgot beer but then yes!!!! After MTB beer is on a par with after concreting beer. Thanks for the laugh mate.
nice video Doddy, gave whole instruction about what i need to pack for my next whistler trip
When I go riding I’m never going without first aid (importantly stick on sutures and large dressings, speaking from experience), knee pads, gloves and a phone, they’ll all save your ass in a bad crash some hex keys for readjusting anything that comes loose in a crash is also really important, a spare inner tube and/or tube repair kit (if not tubeless), bike pump and/or CO2 and tyre levers I’d recommend but aren’t 100% necessary but would be very useful if riding quite a long distance which you can’t walk back to your car, a chain breaker tool and a quick link will serve well for repairing a snapped chain on the trails, everything I’ve listed, minus anything about tyre puncture and repair is from personal experience or experiences of riding buddies within my last 3 mountain bike rides, stuff happens on the trail and to have the most fun it’s best to be prepared
I ride for a high school team. And there are three things that if you do not have you don’t get to ride and dont get substitutes. Helmet, glasses, and bike.
I use the wraparound safety glasses myself, clear and smoke depending on the time of day. They’re not perfect, they do fog in the Glasgow winter, but they protect your eyes for sure and they don’t break the bank (especially when I work for a company that sells them: I’m not tight, but I do squeak when I walk…!)
I’ve been watching your videos for a while now and I wanted to ride my MTB Evey day but I had a busy schedule with school and work but I found out the perfect solution I just ride to school so I’m now getting at least 7 miles a day on my MTB thx for the content.
I wear a helmet and shoes (usually) when I ride my Ninja, and generally only put on gloves and a jacket when it gets cold. I just got my first mountain bike at 57 years old, and so far I just wear shorts with no shoes or helmet, but I’m just working on conditioning on pavement and a little 2 track. I’ve gone down a few times on motorcycles, and have a few scars to show for it, but I’m still not obsessed with wearing gear. It’s hot where I live 9 months out of the year, and I value comfort over precaution. The way I see it, I might be uncomfortable for a few weeks after a crash, but that’s better than being miserable every second of every ride. If a truck flattens you, no amount of gear will protect you anyway. I’m sure the guys who sell or promote gear will disapprove, but I’m my own man, and make my own choices.
I use 3m saftey glasses with brow gaurd, they sit a bit farther from my face and don’t fog.. they cost $15
Glasses is a type of wearables that I never really even consider that I need/want, but now that I own my first mountain bike I realise that protecting my eyes from dirt and/or the sun I’m seriously considering a pair of glasses.
I just use my everyday Ray ban sunglasses. No issues with them fogging up ever.
Those lightweight protectors seem great… did not know they even existed.
Could have spared me a lot of annoying bruises.
Thanks GMBN!
POC > SMITH I’d literally put my life on the line for it. Smith is all about looking good while POC has had the same color schemes for years, yet keep advancing in protection and are at the top of the charts in protection because of spin!
This is an infomercial the further I listen. Smith this, smith that. Even his not so bad negative comments. All publicity is good publicity.
Personally I always like to bring a bike as it helps me get down the trail
$220?!?! yeah, i’ll pass and spring for the $15 anti fog wipes.
gonna have to add “comfortability” to my criteria for helmet selection….
I don’t carry anything on my rides I just yolo it can’t be that bad, right?
Quick comment @ CO2, a fine alternative is an airbone pump; it’s actually the smaller than the CO2 model shown and functions like a traditional pump, so it never runs out and doesn’t require additional cartridges / space / weight. Huge plus is it easily fits in a small under-saddle bag with an m17 and patch kit:)
Need a follow up to blakes trail balls….now is a great time…at home, get Blaking..sorry, baking
don t forget to tell people where you go and when you normally come home take a fully loaded phone with you and leave the unlock code screen off for the emergency’s paramedics
1:15 is exactly why I like mountain biking! Nobody is worried of upsetting anyone! In typical mountain biking fashion, let’s just stick someone in a wheelchair at the end of a wall and let’s ride a bike on that wall full pelt towards that person in the wheelchair to see how far we can get without slamming on the brakes! Love it! Exactly why it’s become habit to sit down and watch your videos after a long day at work. Keep it up guys!
Matt Stephens take some notes from Doddy this is how to unpack your case 😉 (love you both GMBN & GCN)
Is that a 661 wrist protection at 2:57? do you find it useful? (I suffer from wrist pain while riding due to an old injury)
As a long distance hiker i feel you on the fleece lasting ten years. Any gear holding up that long becomes a much loved item.
One thing I can’t live without is gmbn videos and mountain biking. Blake has to be the most optimistic person out there right now. Thanks for the good vibes… Can’t wait to ride my bike again
My beginners equipment list is a bike. you can go biking with just a bike, sounds crazy, but it actually works. If you are doing trails rated Green circle you are set to go. (water recommended) there’s nothing wrong with a simple water bottle, you can buy a bottle of water that fits into your bottle holder and save some money. Gloves yes, all the pads and extra gear not really needed if you ride greens, which is what you should ride as a Beginner. A helmet is a great idea! but not really mandatory if you take it easy and have some self preservation instincts, still a great idea. don’t bother with clipless shoes if you are a beginner, go and ride. when you are ready for a blue you are intermediate and should then think about upping your safety gear.
Cycle only with glasses here in Tacoma. Got some from Nashbar that have worked well for me that arent too dark. Also for the rainy cloud filled days have some yellow lensed glasses.
Please do a video on fall/winter mountain bike clothes for the nw
I would trade the lot for some toilet roll these days ♂️
I dont wear glasses much just because they are not aesthetically pleasing to my eyes IMO. I prefer goggles over glasses but that’s just me. Stay shredding!!
and a nine mil. for safety and camera and a gps unit, and a gallon of water / soreass pills xtra chain and links, ECT>
Seems to b more about the most expensive cool guy gear…that u get sponsored by, ie it’s free
Rode whole summer with my Siroko K2’s, they never fogged up, are super light and they have different options for dimming. Plus they don’t look like something out of ninja-turtles like yours… https://www.siroko.com/collections/sport-sunglasses-for-running-and-cycling
Gotta see Blake back on the dirt jumper ALOT more often
They look great, then I saw the price of the models you’re wearing here in the UK; nearly £300 is the best I could find:-/
I scratched an eyeball while riding, it then got infected. It wasn’t pleasant, always wear glasses now.
Whens the new bike coming? Been waiting for too long. Its about time for the new ride, wheres it at?
Life hack! Tape a bottle stuck to a bottle cage and store some multitools or sparetubes and stuff it with paper so that it doesnt make any noise and then you can wear a smaller hydrationpack.
The Milwaukee safety glasses from home Depot works good for me it’s never fogged up on me and it’s less than 12 dollors
Got to say, helmet wise; I had one of those non-MIPS, bare bones helmets for a while. It saved my life. It didn’t survive the crash, but the important thing is that I did, so any helmet adds a huge amount of protection! Also…nothing wrist-mounted for heart rate monitors has held up as accurate or repeatable in clinical trials yet. It’s fun as a, I don’t want to use the word toy, but…for fun, I guess, though!
Those cliff bars are my favourite, I like the crunchy peanut butter bar and the macadamia nut
you can buy anti-fog stuff for glasses but its basically just soap so use that. Put some on the inside of the lens and rub it in then wipe it off. On the trails though, I find just a bit of spit actually works well.
Awesome informative video. Just bought my first real mountain bike. 2015 Devinci Spartan!
Hey i picked up a brand new 2015 fox 32 evo fork for my xc bike. Did a lowers oil and new seals and the rebound and lockout stopped working. Seals and fox gold fluid were to address the tsb. Any ideas? That due to not enough fluid?
What about spray waterproof spray or anti-wet spray of your normal cycle glasses?
Wish I was a gmbn presenter, having all that stuff would be a dream come true
I have to take everything because i have no riding buddies, ha ha
Because i’m a huge bro, Oakley Gascans are go to shades. They dont fit into my FF helmet, so i ride with either clear goggles or no goggles
A tip for everyone with a big Nose: Try the SCOTT Prospect googles, they are GREAT! i had the same problem with my nose getting squished but the SCOTT goggles have a relatively big cutout to prevent this.
am i the only one who tapes granola bars and other snacks to my helmet for easy access
About to enter the world of off-road biking. Thanks for the info>
