While squats and lunges are two of the most popular bodyweight exercises, they tend to be hard on people with sensitive knees. Luckily, there are myriad other bodyweight exercises that can still give you a great workout but are more low-impact. Here, we recommend nine of those bodyweight exercises that will help you get in shape while still protecting your knees.
Glute bridges. Single leg deadlift. Reverse lunges improve balance. Box squats activate the quadriceps.
Calf raises, side-lying leg lifts, and seated leg extensions toughen the muscles supporting your knees. Standing or lying hamstring curls are apt for severe knee conditions. hi! i also have a lot of pressure in my knees and found this mildly bearable to follow. but my one question is that, when i do these exercises, my entire body goes numb? and tingly? please someone help me figure what this is
looks and feels great, and as I have a torn miniscus and am doing SYNVISC® hylan G-F 20 injections at the moment, I am just doing mostly upper body and low knee raises, so as to feel good. As a 64 year-old young lady who has always done weights and sport this is something I will work up to when I get the ok from the Ortho Surgeon. Thanks again

I will make my knee normal like before. I will prove my doctor that he said it will be lifetime pain if exercise is stopped. But I will make it work 100% work later without doing any exercise in future. I challenge my doctore. Exercise and believe of mine will cure it.

i sprained my knee about a month ago, i felt a loud pop on the left side of my left knee while squatting a low i managed to to rack the weight but flet unable to continue the workouts. the next day there was swelling and i was unable to walk downstairs without pain, now after a month i am able to walk downstairs and have minor discomfort but sometimes my knee pops and i cant put to much weight on it

It is a great exclusive product for learning how to fix chronic knee pain without the headache. I don’t have one of those fancy straps so I just lower my pants to do those exercises.
All you need to do strengthen your knees is to do mini-squats. “Mini” means you DON’T do a full squat, which is damaging to your knees. Pro baseball catchers have proven that. Instead, keep the angle between your thigh and lower leg greater than 90 degrees when you at the greatest depth of the squat. And a large range of motion is not needed for this exercise. So on each cycle/repetition, you don’t need to straighten out your legs.

Whenever I stoop or let’s say sit and raise up from a sitting position, my right knee feels powerless, I have to use my left knee more to help me raise up. My knee hurts when I try to jump on a trampoline. I do a lot of flips and stuff. I also do like flips on flat ground so I use my knees a lot. And it hurts when I put pressure or jump these past 3 days. When I tap right below my knee cap I feel like it’s bruised and right under my knee cap on the right side I feel a bruise and I tap on that and it just hurts idk what to do cause my knees are my life

Hey there! Just wanted to thank you for sharing these exercises! I’ve tried other exercises in the past that didn’t work out for me. I’ve had knee problems for years. Though my doctor advised me to continue to work my quad muscles I still had problems. I kid you not, I did these exact exercises on your video and my knees felt a lot better from day 1, today is my 3rd day doing just these exercises and I’m loving them, my knees feel a lot better!
What about reverse lunges? I find them much easier on my knees than forward lunges.

I used to love squatting. However, my senior year of high school I tore my meniscus in my left knee during wrestling practice. The doctor said it wasn’t significant enough to require surgery but I haven’t had the same strength in the leg since. And any time I try squatting or anything that requires me bending my knee a lot, I get a sharp pain in my knee.

I have juvenile arthritis and no matter what I do it always flares up around this time of year (April, as well as November) and one of my knees is a bit swollen but it feels a lot better after this practice. For the stiff leg deadlift with the weigh ball, what is a good range of weight to use? Actually doing squats make my knee feel better so far.No pain when I do the squats at this point.

When should I be doing this routine? I really like it but I worry about doing it on days where I’m doing other training I stay pretty active. Am I risking injury if I do this in the morning and training jiu-jitsu in the afternoon/evening? Or should I only do this after I’ve finished what ever strenuous activity I have for the day?
Being in recovery from being paralyzed my PT makes me do all of these exercises but I was surprised I was able to do the hip thrusts so thank you for that. Great video!

Hello! This is my first time coming across your channel. How long would you say it took you to recover and be able to lift weights again? I hurt my knees from running back in January of this year. I was training myself to run a marathon, but unfortunately could not continue due to sharp pains coming from my knee. It usually would start hurting once I hit my 6th mile during my runs. I was running an average of 6-8 miles daily and after only two weeks of training I noticed sharp pains in my knee where I couldn’t even run or walk without my leg feeling like it was going to collapse on me. After about two months I was not feeling pain in my knees anymore and I began to do bodyweight workouts without an issue, but I was unable to lift weights due to the pain arising again in my knee. It has been about 5 months now of bodyweight workouts only and my knee is feeling better than ever, but I am still nervous about lifting weights.
Wow! I have left knee pain during exercise. Maily the above listed exercise gave me immense pain and people didn’t understand when i told them. Running is never my choice and i felt guilty for not doing it. Now i found the answer. Thanks a lot

Hey Molly, I have no dumbells but all this time I´ve been doing this without because at my level it felt still very heavy. Now that i´m stronger it´s starting to feel a bit light, but for now I can´t buy dumbells, I would also have no idea what weight to get them.

This video is pretty much the only reason I work out. It’s fun, quick and easy enough to be motivated even after a long day. I do some other workouts for arms and abs and whatnot but this one is what keeps me motivated. I always tell myself ‘come on you can do 20mins of cardio’ and end up doing all my other workouts as well:D

It is a great one off guide for learning how to fix chronic knee pain minus the hard work. Ive heard some incredible things about it and my BF got cool success with it.
I have not had any sort of replacements. My knees are just very weak. It’s hard for me to even stand for long periods of time. All of the tendons in my legs are very tight. I hope these exercises work for me. Thank you for the advice.

My question is, would this workout be safe for my stomach or could some of these exercises seperate my muscles more?

After doing what I thought was low impact (w/c wasn’t really apparently after watching this), my knees hurt and now I can’t even do a normal lunge. I hurt my right knee last week on vacation. I slipped in sand while riding my bike. I am doing a body detox to reduce inflammation (instead of taking a med that equals to 16 advil in one day!!). I’m a yoga teacher so do have awareness of anatomy & modifications, but this practice really gave me some new ideas about what might work better for me as I practice leading up to surgery. Namaste.

I have arthritis and did some of these exercises for two months and now back to running around 30 miles a week with no pain at all.:) they really help.
I have leg problems i get hurt quick the longest ive been injured is when my knee got hurt 1 month i still have it when the pain first started i couldn’t run i could bend my left knee i still have this knee pain its getting better i could better i hope this would help not to get this injury again because i play soccer and couldn’t play well.

My knee issues are genetic, inherited from my mother. I love yoga though, and have spent many hours reading up and watching videos on protecting and strengthening the knees for yoga. Your video has somehow managed to summarize so much of that info into a thoroughly enjoyable practice. I will be sharing this video with my mother and my sisters, who all share the same knee issues. You have NO idea what is to have a bad knee. Once you have bad knee you can NOT be on the floor on your knees, like you did it!

Ticks me off so bad that Im not suppose to run anymore cause Ive had a huge bone spur on my knee my whole life, with no pain until I started to run about 4-6 miles… now I can’t walk on it if I do. Im going to have it surgically removed and I am hoping this will help so I can start running again!

I’m 40 now but still enjoy running hills, spinning, weights, though my body is not what it used to be. I abused my knees with a lot of up and down hill running but I am very mobile still. I’m starting my new weight loss journey in a couple days and have destroyed knees which has made it so hard to exercise. I decided to look up HIIT safe for knees and although I may have to alter these slightly I am looking forward to starting. I’m going to update you on my progress because I want to see how far I can get with these videos! And you will get a real report on how a person does! I am 49 but still have a lot of muscle. I’m doing these in my living room and I will be done them 3x first week, 5x after that. I have about 19 weeks until my first vacation on my own since getting married and kids! I want to enjoy it! this video is wonderful! i have a discoid meniscus in my right knee, and it has recently prevented me (whenever it feels like it, its a inconstant issue) from doing the squat rack and lunges. this was so helpful to find exercises that wont aggravate my knee! thank you so very much!
I had surgery last year and again last month. I had a type 5 tibial plateau fracture, I’ve just had the plate removed. It collapsed so my recovery has taken a lot longer than it should. The only thing holding me back how is that I can easily lift 200kg with just my right leg but I struggle to lift 30kg with my injured leg. I can’t support my own weight properly with my left and it’s left with walking with a twisted limp. I’m doing everything that I know of to try and regain my strength, does anyone have any advice?
I have sound coming out from my right knee, sounds like cracking sound, whenever I did some of these exercises. I know I may have putting stress on my knees. I can’t do lunges as knee has weakened. Any advice or what is the cause of my knee cracking sound? How do get recover? Thanks

Foam rolling helps a lot. A lot of exercises to promote strengthening around the knee to support it. I wouldn’t just give up all of these things mentioned…. everyone is different though.
I’m finding this great in general but getting a little lost in warrior 2. It’s one knee in particular that is very weak and sensitive, so I’m trying to keep them close together in this pose but when the better knee (in my instance the left) is bent down, something in the twist of the back leg upsets the bad knee. Any tips on this? When this happens I try to adjust to where it feels comfortable but it often ends up practically stood up normally and then I’m not developing any strength-see what I mean? 😉 After a few times going through the video I’m starting to appreciate the subtlety of the moves and the gentle strength training:), but I’m still struggling with warrior 2. Love the videos though! In particular, it’s really been helping with my hips!

I have had a sore knee (hockey injury) well hiking for 18+ years and thought it was the way it was going to be forever.
After doing this Yoga For Sensitive Knees With Adriene about 10 times I have no pain in my knee well hiking. This is the first time I ever did Yoga and after getting everything down on this Yoga session I will continue with Yoga. Hoping I make Yoga a for life thing.

I have patellar tracking disorder in my left knee. I have been through PT and I’m also trained as a personal trainer. I know all the exercises to do to “fix”
This but it never goes away. The mind-body awareness you bring to this practice with how to focus on your feet on the ground as well as how to do a bridge without clenching the glutes is a game changer!

You make it sound if one trains enough the bad knees are just going to vanish. However exercise does not always help. I hoped to find advice on how to substitute certain exercises because I have bad knees (29 and scheduled for an artificial knee because of genes). Instead I left feeling guilty that I don’t try hard enough.
Good video. I would add biking as a low impact way to strengthen your knees. But you need to make it somewhat difficult by going up hills or putting the bike into its highest gear if you’re on flat ground. And of course, you also need to be careful and start out with easy biking and then progress slowly to making it more difficult. And set your seat low enough so you don’t overextend your knees at the end of each stroke. At maximum extension your leg should NOT be straightened out like it is when you are standing.
These may be not jumping, but they are not knee friendly. Back and Across lunges are serious knee exercises, for example.
Do these work if you have a bone problem that causes your knees to be weak
I workout but i have a problem with my knees they locks sometime so I need to stop for weeks and then I go back to doing weights but I cant lift or do most of the workouts that I want too..
I never loved run and jumping because my knees always bothering me, so I’m stick to walking and low impact exercise. People sometimes call me loser. I’m glad though because apparently I did all the right thing

Have been putting off starting yoga for ages after I injured my knee a couple of years ago. I had to have pretty extensive surgery (bone grafts/reconstruction/implants), which left me with a lot of nerve damage and has stopped me being able to kneel. I have Osgood Schlatters and for the first time in my life it’s really giving me a hard time. I do not want to stop training. But literally just moving it at this point causes me serious pain
this was what my physiotherapist made me do and three other exercises. i did these at least three times a day.

Opening the feet further helps with squats. Even for lunges, space out the front and back feet. Otherwise the front knee will be more bend n go above the front feet, which can cause jnjury

I my left knee troubles since childhood due to some filament issue (I have never had any accidents ) I think it’s what I’m born with! I do my legs workout but squats and lunges always trouble me so I avoid that instead I do floor glute workout that helps it’s not as fast as squats! But it’s slow and working process

Condition of your knees is a resultant fire od what’s happening in your hips and feet. Pretty much if either of them are fucked and/or imbalanced, your knees will tell you.

I injured my right knee last week working out.. it’s swollen right under the cap.. I’m icing and elevating haven’t worked out lower body since I injured it on Thursday.. went to the doctors she said it’s bursitis.. how long do you think before I can do these exercises for legs?

I have struggled with knee pain for a while now and I always suspected it comes from imbalance in my muscles. Thanks so much for this practice! I did it for the first time today and I was struggling to engage my inner thighs. Especially the bridge I just couldn’t do without engaging my glutes. Feels like such a revelation:D gonna try this more often now to see if anything changes.

Very hard not to engage the glutes. So much focus is given generally to activate glutes before exercise that to do the reverse is difficult

Then, Someone told him about planet Ayurveda. He went to Planet Ayurveda & got his treatment started. Now he is fine. If you have this type of problem or any other type of health problem. you should go to Planet Ayurveda.
The Epliptical also hurts my knees. There’s knee conditions that it can aggravate if done regularly.

This seems contrary to general knee advice. After years of knee pain, the only physiotherapy I found to make any difference was training to actively engage the glutes. It worked! The logic (which makes sense) is that the glutes align the leg properly, and so if they are relaxed (as mine used to be) then as you walk/run etc you put huge stress on the knee to control the realignment to maintain balance.
Why is Adrienne advocating turning off the glute stabilisers?

A good friend have got difficulties going for walks due to tenderness and also stiffness of his knee and hip. Dislocated my knee about 5 months ago and I’m still doing physio as I wasn’t fully grown so I couldn’t have surgery
I’m very new to yoga and struggle on making sure I have the correct body alignment during poses. Being 5’2 and on the chubbier side don’t seem to help either but that is something I am learning and adjusting! I am loving your videos so thank you ❤️ I had a question regarding the position and exercise at 7:57 I’ve noticed that the lower arch of my back starts to ache during this exercise, is that normal? I tend to find it hard to have my lower back stay completely flushed with the ground not sure if it’s a big booty issue or what but if you had any advice it’ll be extremely appreciated. These seem to be for post-knee-replacement surgery. They’re good exercises anyhow as well. But I was looking to strengthen my knees (the muscles supporting them) to Prevent or postpone surgery. I was looking for non-sitting exercises. Oh well.
How do you feel about donkey kicks modified to a chair. Standing, holding the back of chair for support? As opposed to being on the knee, still effective?

For some strange reason i just had pains around my upper knee muscles, thanks for these recommended exercises.
Definitely going to do these. My bilateral knee pain has stopped me from exercising and riding my bike to work as I’m worried they will be worse. The GP I saw about it didn’t suggest anything like these moves so will be very interesting to see what effect they have on me..

Thank you so much for this practice. My knees are sensitive because I often sit on them, it’s a bad habit that I have to break, as I’m a teenager and shouldn’t be experiencing this problem. I will try to do this practice once a week.
