Ideally, take a guided tour of the equipment before you begin. It makes your first session a lot easier. Those clunky machines with pulleys, the on/off buttons, and the ambiance of the weight room all tend to put some pressure on you to look as if you know it all.Worth noting, though: Weight training isn’t the only way to challenge your body to new loads. Any form of resistance training offers a chance for you to expose your body to new loads.
7 TIPS FOR WEIGHT TRAINING BEGINNERS. 1. STAY HYDRATED: Muscle is 75% water. So weigh yourself on a digital scale before and after your workout. Then drink the difference in ounces of water.
The best place for beginners to start is a combination of body-weight exercises and weight lifting with dumbbells. You don’t need a lot of equipment to strength train, and you don’t need a laundry list of exercises. In fact, most trainers will make sure you don’t overcomplicate your training, especially in your first few sessions. As you begin or increase your weight lifting, you will be burning more calories. Lifting increases your metabolism for several hours, even up to 24 hours after your work out.
The strength of your connective tissues and joints will be increased as you lift weights, thus decreasing the possibility of injuries during your day to two day routines.Your muscles start tearing down with your very first weight training session, but it could take up to at least four weeks before you can physically start seeing an increase in muscle size. Weight loss and muscle building can each take the same amount of time to produce physical results, but when they are done together you may see results faster.Dumbbells are a great first step into the world of weight training and strength training: Most gyms will have dumbbells, even if it’s a basic gym in your apartment complex.; A set of dumbbells doesn’t take up a lot of room, which means you can have a pair at home without a large footprint. Dumbbells make it easy to add difficulty to a bodyweight movement: holding dumbbells while doing.
The fact that you’re able to lift for so long probably means you’re not lifting heavy enough to challenge your muscles and efficiently build strength. To use resistance training effectively. If you lift weights first thing in the morning, eat a banana and whole wheat bread at least 30 minutes before you begin.
Allow three hours before working out after you’ve taken in a full meal. When starting a new workout routine, before you even get to the part where you’re trying to figure out whether cardio or weight lifting should be done first, you need to understand your body. There are three main body types: endomorph, ectomorph, and mesomorph.
You may well be pretty tired before you even start your actual exercise and that will really test your mental fortitude. The same is true of many sandbag exercises there are transitions to accomplish alongside the main lifts. Some would see this as detracting from the program, but I see the opposite. On upper-body strength training days, you can do either first. On lower-body strength training days, lifts weights first.
If your goal is just general fitness, do either first, but maybe start with. You want your training sessions short and intense.” Four to six weeks before your tournament, start to reduce your training volume. Volume is the amount of work being done.Come to your first session with some pre-set, specific goals. If you are unsure of exactly what you want, let them know.
They are there to help you figure it out and quantify your goals so you can track and measure them, and therefore, reach them. The greatest strain on your muscles will come from heavy lifting, so you want to do that first while you still have muscle strength, but your glycogen stores, needed for.

I’m a beginner! I have been running and doing HIIT for a few years, but I’m new to lifting.
I am a complete beginner to lifting. I only ever do steady state cardio. Just wanting to tone after losing 30 lbs! (:
How do you feel about ISSA? I’m currently taking the certified personal trainer course with them.
Hey Brian! If you see this comment I’d love to hear your response!
So I’m a new personal trainer with an EXS degree, and want to come up with the initial consultation/assessment. I know you went over briefly what the assessment is, but where can I go for a more in depth initial assessment? Another video on this topic would be great too!:D Let me know please and love the videos!
Hey! Great videojust subscribed, what does a good assessment entail? New to the PT space but I have been passionate about weight training for a long time, considering going for my certification so I can become a PT but these videos are great.
I just realized that he reminds me of dave Foley. Sounds like him too.
I’m a beginner! And i love you personality and your videos!
Im a beginner!
Thank you so much for your technique and workout videos they help me sooooooooo much.
I saw your video on Keto. I would like to know your opinion with regards to the whole30 program. Thank you so much again for your work.
Damn TJs a real one. Dude still replies to all the comments on one of his most viewed videos
I love doing 20 min cardio then 40 min of weight lifting. But I don’t want to be that guy who is sweating profusely all over the gym equipment. So until I get my own gym at home, I’ll be the civilized citizen of Earth and do weights then cardio.
I’m a beginner. Really just got my start in the gym. Was a runner in high school until a hip injury and just swore off fitness. Just 6 short months ago I started yoga and it spark my joy in activity again, into a New Years resolution to start running again. Running wasn’t cutting it but I was to Intimidated by free weights so I’d just knockout a circuit using machines. I finally am ready to go and stand in front of the mirror to lift. Really need direction and your videos have made me to so excited to get strong.
Great video. I really interested in this video very good explained building muscle for beginners. Think you for sharing this video
Very thorough and professional. Wish this was the industry standard
I had never really workedout before, just work on the farm. But I started working out 2 weeks ago, I’m such a newb!
I am a beginner and I feel like I am too old to start but i am going to try I would like to know what kind of barbell would be best I didn’t realized they have so many different ones?
Really a joyful video, I’m glad to find the video, thank you for sharing the video
Hey critical bench, my first experience lifting weight was just bench press, no warm-up or anything, I’m trying to figure out how I would appreciate a warm-up. I think to my disadvantage I am a skinny/very mobile person genetically. But for someone who is just starting their movement and doesn’t have my skinny genetics, how do you think I could approach this?
A lot of great info! Didn’t see you upload for a while. Lots of people at my gym need to see this video, they don’t start light. Then the quit early.
Anyone else basically a vampire when it comes to training? When I lift in the morning, my overall performance takes a dip, but in the evening I absolutely CRUSH it.
Ok gents, I’m going all in. I’m 45, a recovering clean and sober addict, a proud father and in need of a total body and mind transformation. Well I have the mind part down for now, what I need is the body. Figure they both come hand in hand anyways. Any good motivational tips from someone who has done this program? Your input is welcome..
What kind of knee brace do you have on? Beginner Here! My knees tend to hurt when I’m doing squats or anything that requires me to put pressure on them. Apparently I may have arthritis in my left one. Any advice is welcomed!
hey Dr, is HIIT training good for building Lean Muscle as well, I’ve been doing a lot of that lately
I really interested in this video about building muscle for beginners. Thank you.
Dude, nice side note on morality to kick off the video. It’s awesome you included the link to the charity. The ideas of moral accountability and moral obligation are interesting though I’ve always leaned toward the discussions on cognitive biases and the debate over free will. Side note I end up sharing nearly every vid of yours I watch with one client or another. As one of my younger clients (14 yr linebacker) so eloquently put it we like how you and your channel are more then “just another meathead on YouTube.”
I’m a beginner, I went to the g with my mom. I just kinda branched around. But sorta didnt know what I was doing
I’m a beginner!! I started going to the gym about 4 months ago. It was my first time ever going to the gym so I started off only 2x a week. I’ve finally progressed enough to start my 4x a week routine and I’m so glad I found your videos!! I have used the bars a few times but felt my form was off so I stay mostly with DB. Thank you so much for your videos!!! Can’t wait to put this knowledge to good use.
I’m a beginner, sort of. I’ve been taking a class for about 8 months that touches on kettlebell and dumbbell workouts. Outside of that I’m intimidated by the free weight section in the gym because I just don’t really know what I’m doing.
Sounds like some good advice for all levels. I need to start trying some of this to help with my own workouts. Thanks for the information!
I’m so a beginner, but I want to learn to lift heavy and lose weight and gain some muscle and look better of course lol
I’m a Beginner!!!! And I want to start lifting and I’ve always wanted to get strong but just don’t know how to get started. New Subscriber here too! So far loving the video
The best time to train is between 00:00 and 00:00. Cant stop the gaintrain
I’m a beginner to the gym! I am not a stranger to working out though, I’ve done body weight exercises (squats and pushups and things like that) and running for years.
Hello mate. I’ve been a freelance personal trainer for a few years now. I’m certified but it’s been a while since I sat the exam so the minutiae of certain data points aren’t fresh in my mind. I applied for a job at a corporate gym just before the COVID19 lockdown and got the job, but they said I still have to sit a short written exam, before I can begin work after the lockdown ends. I live in Asia so it’s not going to be all the legal stuff ACE focus on. It’s not very litigious out here and safety is also unlikely to be the focus of any exam. Do you have any experience of written examination for employment, and if so, do you have any advice or guidance on what to expect?
I’m expecting the focus to be basic anatomy, nutrition and sets, reps and rest for different goals. I don’t anticipate much in the way of ACE programming protocols or in depth cardio programming etc. At least I hope not!
I hope you can help
Cheers
Thank you so much!
Im new to personal training.
I think my biggest fear is coming up w/ quick effective workouts on the spot. Of course depending on the assessment is there some type of formula u have to know what to quickly have that person do.
I hope this question makes sense! Thank u!
Hey I’m a beginner I started lifting in june 2019 and your vids are super helpful
Been going to the gym for 1,5 years now, but not much results. Still a beginner I guess. Gonna follow this workout plan.
I haven’t been active in the gym since 8th grade, I’m about to go into my junior year of high school. This is gonna help a lot thank you a lot, I keep I don’t loose motivation
Hi Meg! Im a begginer, I wanna get stronger and see what my body can do
I would guess training later in the day gives slightly better results because sleep better coencides with your post workout anabolic state.
Could you do a study on training for night shift workers plz!?
Hi Jeff.. Nice video. I remember Keifer talking about this before and he mentioned the evening was better due to the increase in core body temperature so you would be stronger in the evening.
I’ve been working out for about 2 years and I have a younger friend who wants to start!! I just wanna reteach myself and be a good coach for him!!
Total beginner. Just learning how to do everything properly to make sure it’s working.
The question is always for me is that how can I build the session if the client wants to loose weight. I like intervall training, can I combine lifting weights with plank or isometric or dynamic excersises?
For example:
Squat with jump for 30 sec biceps curl 12-14 reps 3 circles not much rest. And other pair of excersises. Or should I repeat one excersise at the sam time?
I like supersets.
My client is beginner though.
The best personal training session is the best for that particular client. There are many exercises depicted here that many people are not able to do. This is why I agree with doing an in depth assessment and then from there then you can come up with a “perfect”training session. If you are a new pt don’t think that degrees etc are going to make you a better trainer, experience does that. So get experience in the gym and train lot of different people..
I’m a beginner!! I appreciate this video and looking forward to watching more of your videos. I appreciate your goofy sense of humor! I was laughing out loud, and that makes the info more enjoyable as well! I am only able to get to the gym mon-fri when my son is in school. I would ADORE a 5x week beginner program that focuses on specific muscle groups each day. If I do alternate day/full body, I’d only be able to come to the gym 3x. I am a newb but I am LOVING my gym time. And I REALLY want to learn to lift heavy. I loved the approach you talked about here!
Thank you!!
You talk too much, always go straight to lesson or the essence of the video posted
Besides working out do we need any type of diary of for workouts or nutrition dairy
God! I definitely needed this because I have zero muscle. I’I’m going to take your advice and tips to heart begin strength training. Its going to be journey but it will be worth it.
I’m a beginner. One hour ago I did back squats with weights on the bar for the first time (total 85 pounds). Thanks for the video, I look forward to getting stronger!
Do I increase the weight when I hit the first set of say 12-15 reps?
I’ve been going to the gym for about 2 months, only problem is I’m not 100% what thing does what muscle so no idea on a workout plan. Any idea on what I should be doing? I just want to lose some weight, tone up and get better strength. Not looking to be world’s strongest Man.
Switch off the music in the background
I agreed with what u said
Hi Meg, i am a beginner and do lifting everyday and as much as i see results i am not seeing as great of a result in my legs, and glutes any suggestions?
I’ve been weight lifting last year but I’ve slacked off! Your videos have helped me get back on up!
Hi, could you please help with this question. I’m currently underweight according to my BMI (around 5kg under), not sure whether to start working out now or first wait until I reach my recommend weight. Also FYI planning to do home workouts. Thanks.
his video was very informative very helpful exactly what i wanted to hear
Hey, I’m 13 and i’ll start going to the GYM tomorrow, and my mom told me that if i left weights and in 1 year if i stop doing it that my skin is gonna look weird.. Is it true or is she lying to me cuz she thinks weight lifting is bad for me?
Should I start a gym routine before the day starts or after the day is over? (Like for example I can wake up around 6 and go and then go to school or work and stuff or go after school/work like night time? And yes I know that eventually it will become a routine but what do y’all think?
I just had to subscribe this has been very imformative for me. Thank you so much
AMAZING video thank you so much this is the kind of video I am looking for.
Can’t get big if you don’t lift, eat, and sleep. Simple ain’t always exciting
I started gym around a month ago and I have a pt but Im not so sure she is helping me well. I go to the gym 5 days per week and 3 of those days I do exercises (without machine), lot of aerobics. My goal is building muscles. Im 50kg and I think my pt wants me to lose weight but I dont really want to. I need to burn some belly fat for sure (I have a 1 y.o baby) but I dont want to lose other than that. Im taking care of what I eat and all. I do squats, lunges, plank, deadlift, mountain climbers, bridge, many crunches, High intense exercises etc this will help me build muscles? I believe she wants me to get my stamina up ♀️ I dont really know how it works
This video is really helpful thank you Jeff now I can make my workouts better now I can fix my workouts to so I can gain better with everything
Beginner here✋…. is there a warm up and cool down… is this needed?
Doctor!!! it’s been 30 yrs since I’ve done anything for strength and physique, my last bench press was in the United States Marine Corps at 550lbs. You are a motivation me, pure and simple! Let’s DO THIS!!!
In conclusion:
-Weights before Cardio (Low intensity Cardio warm-up allowed)
-Evening works better for Hypertrophy in the long term
I’ve just begun watching your videos and find them exceptionally informative and helpful. I used to weight train about 30 year ago (I’m 56) and so many things have changed. Watching your videos has taken away the mass confusion and has my sights set on attainable goals. I’m a big fan now and look forward to new videos! Thanks Doc. Keep up the great work that you are doing.
Amazing vid bro! Ty. I’m a college student and I’m trying to get back into building my body up while I’m young but I got no idea where to start
Wow there is always a lot to learn from your videos, that is the advantage of learning from a doctor.
Would this work for a 41 year old who has never done any exercise in his life, thus far??? If no, can you please do a video for those mentioned above? Thanks.
Hi Criticalbench. So, are SMR and static stretching not beneficial for a new client? This is NASM’s guideline.
I know this is an old video but i think you should do a video on philosophy and what has been your approach to it
BTW, awesome video as all of them
I’m 41 and just purchased your book. i have not touched weights for the last 7 years.
Thanks for the workout tips:) I am going to the gym next week this will help me a lot thanks ^_^
Just started this video, but curious if you felt this is a good starting point for someone who’s been out of weightlifting for around a year. I’ve had injury and tons of excuses keep me away, and I’m hoping to begin again. I’ve lost tons of strength and muscle mass. Just watched your “Creatine 101” video. Loving the content and knowledge. Keep up the good work. Jay
Damn you see the progress in the vids and how theyre set up and how smooth they are
I lifted weights regularly in high school (I was a cheerleader). Then I went to college for 5 years and mostly did just body weight exercises. For the past month I have been lifting weights again and I can’t go back:)
This was actually really helpful thank you so much I have been looking for ways to build muscle and now I have the building blocks to do so.
Pretty good rundown. I add in a Super B-Complex with my supplements, really helps get me some added energy to burn off.
A study of 735k subscribers et. al. showed that gains are maximized by smashing the like button.
This is an informative and useful video about how to build Muscle. I have learned a lot from it. thanks for sharing.
Morality doesn’t exist, at least not as the concept that is presently used
Your 5 points are superb. Thanks for sharing. I was looking for proper guide and your video has encouraged me to start building muscles.
Hey, thanks for the video. I have some dusty weights downstairs and I want to see myself with some muscle mass. This’ll get me going.
Holy moley, that intro hit me hard! So clear, so true; thank you, Jeff.
Great vid. I downloaded the vid so i can look back to it anytime. A lot of information to take in, at least for me, but i know by watching it every now and then will help me address the stuff that ill miss. Thank you for this amazing video.
Ok doc quick? I’m a 41 yo newby lifter B/c of work I can only workout Friday, Saturday and Sunday I can’t do Monday Wednesday Friday like u advise is this ok for me
Hey can anyone help? I’m new and just curious I’m not overweight but have a bit of fat on my stomach, just curious woukd working out normally gaining muscle get rid of it?
very comprehensive and it’s impressive how much work you put into your vids! Thank YOU!
I think this is the video a lot of people have been waiting for.
Fitness isn’t the problem for me I just think I’m the right age to add this gym to my daily runs and U16s div 1 footy(AFL) training and cricket my problem is getting the right routine for the gym and also learning what most of the machines do
The best time to workout is when you have the most energy. Simply as that:)
Im a beginner! My biggest struggle is to learn how to breath while lifting weights and how to correct my form. Its a bit intimidating.
As someone who’s always walked a great deal I have quite a strong lower body but feel I’ve not paid attention to my arms and chest. I’m trying to understand the science of exercise better so I can develop a program that is sensible and natural. And if I can put a few pounds on even better.
My preference is midday. Doesn’t always work out that way, but always cardio after.
Excellent,i definitely needed this because, I am going to share this tips with my friends and family thanks.
Thanks for sharing this man, didn’t know where to start but this was really helpful:)
for muscle training, should I burn my fat off or just start right away?
Super informal video. It should help those build muscles at a fast rate when they start.
I’m a beginner. I saw a friend follow your program and looks FAB. I am literally in my first week at the gym. totally don’t know what I’m doing, but I’m working on it.
I’m a bigger! I have been in the gym a week! I’ve lost 40 pounds from just changing my eating and I’m ready for more! I want confidence in my body again and I think powerlifting will help with that
Just started going to the gym so I am total beginner and know not one thing about weight training! Love your video so far…hope I learn alot from your channel. Maybe in the long run weight training would stop being so intimidated to me!
Time to start investing into myself and boosting my confidence.
Am beginner to powerlifing Just dont know where to start. I have been going gym for 6 months now and am getting bored and dont see any improvement. X
great beginner level foundational muscle building training, mixing the training and workout routine creates optimum results, ton of learning and sharing material in this video.
Me and my best friend have finally decided to start getting in shape and have been looking for good information for beginners. Surprisingly it’s hard to find, this is exactly what I was looking for. Tips that cover all the bases and is easily attainable for beginners to accomplish. Can’t thank you enough, hope you’ll make an intermediate video for me to check out in a few months.
I’m gonna have to rewatch this video on 75% speed just to get it all.
Thanks for your video about how to build the muscle very strong. This video is very helpful for my son to get fit as per your instructions.
As a lifeguard you’re taught to never jump in to save a drowning person because they’ll pull you under and drown you out of sheer panic. I totally understand the moral question but the situation in itself could lead to you dying so that would be contradictory to the whole “it wont have any bad effect on other people” also you can save a suicidal person and get sued. So i dont think the question is ever this easy. If it was a small fountain and a child was drowning that could easily be saved without hurting yourself fatally or someone else then yes you would be, in my opinion, morally obligated to save the child. In saying all of this, i would save the person regardless of bodily harm to myself because thats the kind of person i am and the kind of person i was raised to be. The question of morality is never black and white like this, theres always so many variables that people get lost in protecting themselves that they dont want to help others. This is why hitchhiking is basically nonexistent in the states now. I would love an answer to how to handle the complete untrustworthiness strangers have for each other nowadays. My parents said people used to trust each other more often than not. Nowadays it seems the polar opposite, its few and far in between you find someone trustworthy and its hardly ever in a stranger.
Hey TJ! Loved this video! I’m just curious what programs you took in college/university if any?
I’m a beginner and had never really trained with weights until a couple of weeks ago. It’s still early days but I’m already super proud of how much weight I’ve been able to add to the exercises, and feel such a sense of satisfaction each time I pick up a slightly heavier dumbbell or kettlebell. I’m working my way towards barbell movements, and I’m pretty sure that once I’ve picked up a barbell nothing will be able to stop me getting stronger!
Totally agree with you. Checkout Jordan Peterson and Ravi Zacharias.
I excercise during evening, usually 6 to 8 pm. I want to change my workout time to morning. But the problem is that I just cant wake up before 8 am and stay energetic. Tried a lot of time to rise up early but finding it very hard. I go to bed at around 11pm everyday.
Nothing like some Tokyo drift music to get you in the mood haha
When you can. QED.
Jesus I hate these discussions. Unless you’re a professional athlete, you aren’t wondering because there’s only so much time and you can train when you can, so you do it then. If you ARE a pro then you’re likely training BOTH, morning AND evening. Christ.
I’m kinda a beginner, and have been lifting weights for 4 months now… but I’ve also probably done some mistakes, and was not sure, what I did the first couple of months xD
I love these beginner videos and also the “fix mistakes” videos… they really made a difference to my training!
Thanks for all your awesome videos. Also great to hear that you love philosophy.
For me everything comes down to worldview which everyone has and is built on certain assumptions about reality.
FWIW, here’s a debate with Peter Singer:
https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=HoTILnpd3q8
Thanks for the tips! I was really planning to hit the gym before quarantine, but now I can get started finally:D
He’s a strength and conditioning coach cscs. The guy is literally trying to help personal trainers be better at their craft.
I use to go to the gym every single day except sundays, those were my only rest days…so here I am to start up again and go hard and not quit this time
This video is really educational. Perfect video for beginners. Will definitely follow this. Kudos Dr., thank you for these tips!
Since you like moral philosophy, I’m going to play devil’s advocate a bit as I also like moral philosophy.
Morality is the prescription of a set of personally held values which pursue eudimonia. A man who flourishes is one who pursues the good is one basic assumption of moral theory as flourishing is the good in the conception of most moral philosophers, but a man is not always acting immorally if he does not act towards the good, he could be not acting which is always merely amoral as not acting cannot pursue anything as only nothing can come from nothing. No one is obligated to do anything beyond provide for their own survival and that is only mandated by biology and biology can motivate not doing that at times as well. Would it be good to save the child? Yes. Is it obligatory? Not necessarily, because being moral isn’t an obligation. Is it good? Well obviously, but not acting can never be immoral as not doing something can neither be good nor bad. It can’t cause the good and it can’t caused the bad. Non-action is always amoral. Drowning the child is immoral. Not preventing the child from drowning is amoral. Not stopping a drug dealer from dealing dirty heroin is not something that causes the dirty heroin to be sold. The two people involved in the sale made choices and actions that caused the exchange. You are not responsible for the exchange in any way as you are a complete third party. There is no reason why anyone needs to get involved so there is no obligation to get involved. Would it be kind of you to get involved and would someone who is pursuing eudimonia get involved? I’d say so, but is it mandated that to be a good person, they must get involved? Most certainly not. Imagine this for a moment: the drowning child is drowning because they never learned how to swim due to some fault of their own; they had every possible opportunity to learn to swim and simply made the wrong choices or couldn’t learn the skill adequately because of some hand that nature delt them. Who is responsible for the child drowning? If you didn’t cause the child to drown, you’re not logically or morally responsible for the life of another. What is it would be more beneficial if the child died? They might be the next baby Hitler for all you know. Similarly, if someone is ill entirely by their own mismanagement of their body, is it society’s responsibility to care for them or would it be better for society if they were held responsible for their actions? Our sympathy is almost never a logical justification for our actions.
ANDREW YANG ANDREW YANG ANDREW YANG that’s all I hear is ANDREW YANG who is ANDREW YANG
A bunch of people were OK with slavery in the United States. That doesn’t make it any less evil. The same token a lot of people are OK with the abortion and that doesn’t make that any less evil. People in society always vote by drowning children except current people stand on the shoulders of great people with blood cultures to a truer and better morality and then they want to judge people in the past while they are turning a blind eye to something just as evil. Value all human life, except if you’re defending your life or they committed and egregious crime possibly. Not a big fan of letting people who sell 12 year old girls a sex slaves to live if there is evidence they’ve committed the crime.
I’m new and my goal is to do a full les mill cross fit workout
Hey mate, do you have a full body routine for average body 5,8 feet 71 kilos.?(not fat, but not also skinny)
Or can i also use go for this routine? Thank you, I appreciate your vids.
I’m still a newbie, I’ve been consistent in the gym since August but have been on and off since last September. I think that I am way more confident in the gym room and it’s awesome!
Could you do a workout routine for starters, and maybe foods to eat and stay away from?
it is a fucking shame that you can become a “certified PT” with some weeks courses
I want to get myself into a gym now been training at home for 2 years now but the point where I am now I’m less motivated to gym at home because I gym alone and the vibe ain’t the same as a gym but I feel I will get more done at a gym with their equipment as I dont have all the equipment but in my city theres only 2 gyms but I dont really be able to drive to the gym every single day… as I’m still a student but I just move to another school In my city the gym is walking distance away from the gym….and now then ever I want to get a membership more then ever because I will be able to go to the gym but then it means I must go every single day after school to the gym…. and get home an hour later then I use to but I really want to start training and I haven’t train for 1 month now and I gotten smaller it’s sad
Good video mate and I’ll subscribe. I’m going to joining a Gym this week. I’m extremely anxious about it but I need to do it. I’ve put on a lot of weight the last 10 years due to depression and not looking after myself as a result. I’m going for weight loss but mainly to make myself stronger on my disabled side in the hope it will make life a lot easier. If anyone has anymore tip then drop me a comment. Thanks again mate!
Great video this information is exactly what I was looking for!!!
Some people work out for their summer body… I work out to keep myself “regular” during the hollidays:D Good timing Doc!
Just go and workout..its not a fashionshow, no need for all the selfies and twatooes
This video was very helpful. I’m a rookie personal trainer just got certified about 6 months ago!! I do have a question. Say I am training at a local gym or wellness center. Will that specific gym have a outline of what they want us to do as far as assesmebtsbor will we (the trainer”” need to have one already made up.!
What if I drink 1L of water in the morning? Unlike most people who stay dehydrated in the morning.
Would like to know before goin to gym we should have light breakfast?
Meg, I’ve been binging your channel for over a week and you have me inspired and excited to train and embrace being an athlete. This is huge for me. I am overcoming years of struggling with my body image, several years of exercise bulimia (I haven’t relapsed (binge-eating or over-exercise)in over 5 years but am still cautious.)
While I still feel nervous about the gym triggering many old negative patterns, I am feeling more encouraged than ever to be a strong strong woman. Thank you so much, seriously!
i dont understand why all people getting Proteins and much more when they go to gym..

If I want to do cardio, should I do it before or after lifting?
Wtf, ruin your clothes and late to shopping is reason enough not to save a child? Wtf, why are you bringing this up? I assume most people that can swim would do it or am I wrong?
Love this ❤️ thank you for sharing! Can’t wait to try this!!
Thanks for making this! Thought I had to go thought alot more videos before feeling ready to go, but in this one video I got everything, just awesome, had to sub!:)
Great video. One of the hardest thing for fathers is getting fit, staying fit, but also knowing where to start! Tough in the winter months in the motivation side but gotta stick to it. Great work.
At the opening of the video, Peter Singer’s paper, is a great example closed minded think and the corruption effects of the modern first world.
What are you thoughts on daily whole body vibration @ 30 Hz? Help muscle/strength building?
Great video and very thoughtful.. Thank you for sharing with great explanation, I am going to share this tips with my friends.
Thanks brother, heading to the gym for the first time tonight after work.
Signed up at 3am this morning instead of doing the usual and having a beer.
Im 24, 115lbs never got up to 120lbs.
Casual body exercise and biking only. I’ve been anxious to go gym
This vid aspires me. Let’s go!
Push Pull Legs. Does anyone have their own workout I can follow?
Honestly. Thank you so much for this video. I’m starting up as a personal trainer, and I honestly don’t know much. The certification process just has us test out of a book, and I honestly dont feel ready for clients at all. I’m trying to learn more, and your youtube videos really help out
Im a skinny dude in college and I started hitting the gym last week and I love it.. I go Monday-Thursday and plan on going everyday as I’ve been doing.. just wanna make sure I’m doing it right and getting the best results..
I recently achieved my NASM certification and I have never tried anybody I am going to make a career change in doing this I am 100% all and just need to know the first approach when dealing with clientele whatever advice you can give me I’d appreciate it thank you and have a great day

Dude fucking nailed everything! And didn’t try to sell me shittt. Got a new subscriber!
I am starting my fitness journey tomorrow. So tonight, once again is all about research.
I also started a keto based diet to get me back on the track of better eating but now I’m keen to start lifting weights. Trying to build good habits.. worried I’ll fail
Excellent as an older bloke 55 yes starting to look at building, stamina, tone and strength without wishing to bulk up. Thank you for the advice. I hope to see many more of these videos. Hopefully you could do one on gym machines pros and cons, if you haven’t already
Great video good to watch i have a question i love to train good with my exercises but too great on programme writing you got any tips or videos?
I need muscle, should I eat more calories and do heavier weights like 15 to 25 lbs and 10 to 15 reps, 2 set? When I do my arms and squats with the weights? Thank you for your help.
Yo, what’s your Instagram? I want to get some help on weight loss
Hey Jeff, have you ever taken part in an exercise/diet research study (either as a researcher or participant)? If not, have you considered doing so?
I will have to start taking supplements. That’s probably the part I’m missing.
Cardio opens AMPK pathways which promote fat loss and catabolic aerobic states.
Weight training opens the mTOR pathways which promote hypertrophy and protein synthesis in anaerobic states. If at all possible, proper cardio on a separate day.
As for training time, I can run at 5am especially if I eat junk the night before, but weight training I feel best around lunch time. Energy/hydration does feel lacking first thing, even in a calorie surplus most days.
To the people viewing this video and interested in getting into gym, this is the exact definition of what you need to do. Listen to this guy. I mean it, you won’t regret it.
How would you perform an assessment as a virtual training during the COVID-19 pandemic
I’m a beginner! I’ve been training consistently for about 2 months now and I love it! I’ve been doing really well with gaining strength however the area that has been the most hard to train and see results in is my stomach area.
I’m a Beginner. I started going to the gym about 3 months ago to start feeling better and healthier. Currently, my biggest struggle is posture is completely a move, mostly with the shoulder press. I find it hard to determine where I should have my hands and how far the bench should be raised.
I do bootcamp 3x week and want to get into lifting on a regular schedule
Im not sure out of all years of following programs and watching youtube vids you explain stuff and show things way better that someone understands
Total noob. But I have such a great set up at home because of my hubbs
I’m just afraid of going to a gym. I would like it and feel more comfortable going for the first time if I had someone to go with me.
Totes a beginner over here. Wanna get strong for a new work role that’s a lot more physically demanding than my current one.
And you know, so I’ll survive the zombie apocalypse
Extraordinary video and exceptionally keen.. Much obliged to you for imparting to incredible clarification, I am going to impart this tips to my companions. Much obliged once more.
Hey can anyone help me with this?
I never worked on cardio in my life. I always lifted weights because my old gym didn’t have the equipment nor did I think cardio mattered. Now i had given myself a Month of break and now I’m back to an old gym, should I start cardio and do weights or should I just continue weights. I’m scared I’ll end up losing my mass and I am training for mass
What should I do?
( Sorry for the grammar)
your muscle-building plan looks awesome and very flexible. I liked the fact that you don’t have to exercise every day. gonna try it out for sure! thanks for sharing doctor
THANK YOU so much for this video! I’m just starting in my personal training journey & it’s so encouraging to find a mentor on YouTube! Will definitely be watching all your videos as inspiration for my own fitness journey & the journey I will be leading my clients on. Thank you!!!
Can’t even tell you how good this video is, I’ve been searching the web all day just to get this info and I swear websites and trainers made it more complicated then it needed to be..cheers
I’m a beginner, and I’m doing powerlifting at my highschool but my biggest struggle is my diet!!! Need help! Any tips or suggestions would be AMAZING!!!
my friends are all twats, I’m the only obesed one amongst them and after we worked out at the gym, they decided to eat at McDonalds.
Training in the evening? You mean after work when I’m already tired? Maybe the guys in the morning trained as soon as they woke up. I would do terrible if I trained like that. I need at least 2 hours to eat and fully wake up in order to have a good training session.
You should do a philosophy podcast. You’d probably touch on politics. The reason you aren’t morally obligated to donate all of your income is because the probability of you surviving on zero dollars a year is pretty low and if you’re dead you can’t help people anymore. We are absolutely morally obligated to give to charity. It is morally evil to vote to take away other peoples money and force them to give. As a Christian I give at least 10% of everything I make into anybody who wants to give but doesn’t know where, just buy somebody’s food and the fast food line behind you. But also he gave a specific instance of a person you could help not big instances of giving all your money to a group and hope they help people with it. I don’t give cash to homeless people but you can buy food gift cards maybe McDonald’s five dollars and give those to people. If you are poor in America it’s a very high likelihood it’s because of drug use and addictions or you may have a severe mental illness and those people really do need help
We have the ability to help but the bystander effect will always play in our psyche reaction. People may have answered that they would help the child if people were walking by but we’ll never know, Kitty Genovese thought everyone around would have helped but she was stabbed 50 times in broad daylight and no one did anything.
Wow, your channel is such a huge load of useful information and your explanations are so in-depth yet relatively easy to understand, where have you been all my life:)
Stick to the exercise stuff Jeff, we don’t need another “bro-philosopher”
No offense to your personal life but I think you should stick to information.
I think people like your videos because you’re quoting factual studies and we get results.
We don’t care how many hash browns you eat…
Maybe separate informational videos and personal ones so I don’t have to skip…
Just a suggestion. Love what you do.
What if you come across stressed out clients that get irritated easily? can you refuse service if you don’t gel well togeather?
LOVED THIS VIDEO!! Exactly what I needed to know and hear. THANK YOU
What about doing weight training and cardio on split days? Is that better, worse, or have the same effect as doing cardio after weight training?
I drink a ton of coffee in the morning so my performance is best early afternoon. You can’t take too much caffeine for an evening training session without it impacting on sleep.
Thank you for this video! It’s given me the right motivation to start!
Am a fat girl and have only done ever bench presses in the gym so I am definitely a beginner. Just found your channel and am loving your advice
One of the things I hate about your videos is that you don’t get to your thumbnail until the end of the video. It’s bullshit. You’re trying to make more money that way
Says you can’t get lean while eating junk food then thinks of Jason derulo
Who else is watching this because of QUARANTINE and ur bored of Games
As always, one of the best videos out there (the rest also belonging to Dr. Anthony as well)!!!
I’m a beginner and I’m so excited to stumble on your channel!
I’m literally on a binge watching session.
I’m trying to get a banging body for EDCLV 2020!
Thank you for putting these videos together!
I’m a beginner. I’ve always stayed fairly fit, but I’m in my late 50s, and now have trouble staying lean. I typically do a lot of cardio, and very little weights. I want to learn how to lift safely.
Do you lose fat more when you do cardio right after strength training?
Dr. B knows his stuff. I do all this but not consistently, that’s what I need to bemore consistent.
“justice is subject to dispute. Might is easily recognized and is therefore not disputed. So we cannot give might to justice, because might has already gainsaid justice.”

I go at 1-3am after a nap and that’s because the gym is empty and I own the whole place taking up 7 machines with dumbbells covering the floor. If anyone walks in, I throw a 45lb plate like a frisbee into their throat and send them packing.
Conclusion (based on Jeff’s excellent research and my own personal findings)
Early in the day
Light cardio warm up followed by a low intensity lightweight technique oriented workout with a focus on functional strength & mobility 30 mins max.
Intermittent Fasting/yoga/meditation (connect with Gaia and earth yourself)
Jot down your goals for the day in your journal.
Evening time
Snort a line of Pre-Gains post pre intraworkout predigested peptodismal-peptides
Pop a dick pill
Beast mode at the gym 45-60 mins
Chug a steak & rice smoothie
Text the wife on the way home from the gym that you popped a dick pill & that that and the pre workout caffeine is still up in yo dick.
Bust a viagra nut and decaf yo dick her ass and tell her how lucky she is to have a real man like you.
Open up your journal and reflect upon your day. Retire for the night with a feeling of gratitude to all and everything.
Namaste
Lights out
Oh fuck, I forgot the fish oil
Wen I run within 5 minutes after waking up, I lose weight super fast. My body just seems to have a faster metabolism with a little running or jogging
Great video very interesting and informative and insightful.
Find these a little intimidating, in the course for level 2 and 3 its basic questions, optional answers, so piss easy to pass… but obviously we want to provide a great service to our clients, and it just seems like that doesnt come with the qualification, i guess it’s our own responsibility to develop that when we start working, but just prefer always being ahead rather than winging stuff and learning as i go personally.
I like the video but you ask too much for us to subscribe/follow
I do both, morning workout before work, then an evening work out when I get home, before dinner.
Amazing, found a mentor there truly is some great advice out there if you look hard enough. Thanks
Woww. You are really a good personal trainer. Thank you. I learnt something.
Superb video. I absolutely love the backed examination and how you follow the science, even when it seems counter-intuitive. I also really like the philosophy about helping others when you can!
Knowing the difference between morality and ethnics, the latter, one would contemplate, the former, there is just a reaction to the situation.
Jeff, I really appreciate your videos I dig how you included that philosophy, morality, and helping with the hurricane relief. Keep up the excellent work and thanks again for your highly informative posts!
It’s crazy, i thought some of this was common sense but I guess there are really some clueless trainers out there! Great vid btw!
I’m a beginner. Trying to pose weight and get stronger after 8th back surgery. Doc and physical therapist has cleared me to start back slowly
The reason there is poverty in most of the world is due to a lack of capitalism in those regions. Property rights are almost non-existent in 3rd world countries and this makes open and competitive markets nearly impossible. The answer isn’t to just throw money at a problem endlessly. The answer is to help by educating on individual freedom and property rights which reduces global poverty overall. That is better help, allowing people to become free and prosperous, rather than just continuously throwing money into an endless money pit.
i dont wanna be buff. i just dont wanna die before the age of 25… so here i come gym woooo
If u don’t have a computer to access the workout plan cause u view everything on the phone?
What about the protein synthesis? Does it makes any difference if you train in the morning or in the evening? I mean, if you train in the morning then you eat at least 2 or 3 times after the workout. Does it matter?
Could you split your workout up do a little bit in the morning then the rest in the evening that would help me have more time at night for other stuff
I used to be obese and I did HIITS for 20 min as soon as I was done weight training, 5 days a week. Lost 87 pounds in 3 months. I cut my daily calorie intake by 500 calories and would still eat pretty much whatever I wanted. I was eating a snickers bar every single day. But, I would never eat anything deep fried at all. So I would get a cheese burger and some chicken tenders for example, but no fries. I lost a ton of weight, and performed better and better at the HIITS as time went by. I only saw positive results doing cardio after the weight training, including a ton of fat loss and Yes I gained a very significant amount of muscle in that 3 month period. I got those newbie gains. I would say that I prob gained about 10 pounds of lean muscle. Some of my weight lifting coworkers were implying that I was taking steroids. Which I def was not.
I’m a beginner with a skinny fat body so I’m lifting weights to fix it:)
Body temperature rises naturally throughout the course of the day and there’s about a 2 hour window of natural grogginess (where peak physical and cognitive performance cannot be achieved) that comes after waking as well. Both factors, I would imagine, would play a role in favor of afternoon and evening training!
I think the reason evening is better might be because you are closer to sleeping, a significant period of time where you are expending minimum energy and will be recovering/growing. Working out in the morning you still have to get through the rest of the day.
30-45 minutes of cardio after weight training burns more calories with considerably less perceived effort..
Singer or MackAskill warned against close to home donations/disaster relief. Both are often not as effective for various reasons.
If you’re going to donate, consider comparing options using reliable empirical data about which option maximises your values/goals.
Ending animal factory farming is a priority.
Hey! Been lifting as a novice for like 2 years. Please make a video on cleaning please:)
Has Dr. A loss weight? Your face looks leaner than it did back in videos from 2017 and in your profile picture. Have you changed any approaches in the last two years?
TJ
How can a 15 year old start going gym? I want to start when gyms open again.
Hey man just wanted to say thank you! So much!! This was so helpful, I’m starting my first week of shadowing at the gym I just got hired at next week and am so excited but SO NERVOUS!! Haha this helped and put me at ease:))
Im a beginner! Signed up to your program! My biggest struggle is knowing which workouts to do and also consistency
I just got my diploma in physical fitness and will like to work as a fitness trainer, please I need your advice. currently working in gym but as a trainer also if some one like 40 up that want to lose weight what kind of exercise will I place them on?thanks.
So many thumbs up for using your platform for social justice.
I think it’s really important to look, are you more a late training guy or a morning… For me, for example, it’s more stressful for my body to train in the morning. We actually know that there is a hugh impact on your testosterone level from stress, so in my opinion, you should train when it’s the most comfortable for you
I’m not sure if I’m a beginner or intermediate, but I still struggle with determining whether or not I’m lifting heavy enough. Sometimes I think I’m not but I’ll be super sore the next day. Other times I’ll think it’s way too heavy and no soreness afterwards. I know soreness isn’t really supposed to be an indicator but… I really just don’t know if I’m lifting at a level 5 or a level 8.
Very helpful for Programming. How do you relate this to training the 50+ year old person? Do you follow the same workout outline?
Thank you very much!
Better performance in the afternoon is actually to do with circadian rhythm. We are strongest at 5-8pm.
It’s similar to how going to bed (and sleeping) between 9pm-12pm promotes melatonin (which is needed for hormone regulation), thus resulting in more testosterone.
This is literally all you need. Thank you so much for this awesome guide!!!
Always in the morning, just like what arnold said that all his best workouts are in the morning
I can not stress strongly enough DYNAMIC STRETCHING!!! There are so many lazy ass PT’s who either don’t implement it enough or is flat out absent from their client’s sessions I personally know of a few, but to each their own. Funny you bring up the research on static stretching. About 7 months ago they covered that in a seminar I attended and I followed it up w/ additional research showing it does in fact seem to be the trend Less static stretching. As a personal trainer myself, I really like to implement rolling as it breaks the muscle density and prepares you for the workout and the beauty is that it also works for post training as well. Great vid though This is something ALL newbies should be taking notes on because it’s evident they’re just simply not covering enough in some of these mediocre certs they’re offering to people. Personally, I believe they want your money more than they want you to be qualified in fitness coaching…
Bro you look like Alex Smith lol I had to double take for a second. Great info definitely will be checking out the rest of your vids
Great vid, made alot of mistakes in my first year. My issue is I work a 12 hour night shift so I cant do a normal workout routine. But if anyones is struggling with the same I’ve been experimenting with an upper-lower split… upper on my first day off, lower the next. Rest the 2 days I work but do some core stuff before work, then a push-pull-legs on my 3 day weekend off. While still applying the info in these videos I’ve come way farther my second year in the gym!
Thanks lot for this video, you defined many things I didnt know what to call them.
Klepacki,
Polish? Wooo
Just straight facts and no BS from us Poles:)
Thank you for being my mentor. I’m a new personal trainer and have been structure my workout exactly like you’ve said. I realized I’m lacking in a long term (macro) plan for my clients
Thank you so much! Your videos have been helpful. I’m certified as a Group Fitness Instructor, but delving into Personal Training. What type of education would you suggest I pursue next? I feel getting certified as a personal trainer would be a lot of repeated info. Would it be more advantageous to strive for a degree in sports fitness, kinesiology, or something? Thanks!!
a child was drag out to sea and my first reaction was to go in and save him. Man i can tell you not fun at all. the currents were so strong but i was able to get the child to safety but i ended up getting dragged back out to sea, got caught in a rip and struggled to swim my way back to shore i gave up after 30mins of hard nonstop swimming. Seeing flash of lights and all these flash backs of family and friends. Untill a Lifesaver came and pulled me back to shore i thought i was going to die. Got home told my parents and they acted like it wasn’t a big thing lmao
Useful video, but you might want to consider removing the background music. Just saying.
Good moral philosophy: don’t eat inoccent animals in a world where we don’t have to in order to survive and be healthy.
that was so fantastic!! so helpfull you explained it so well thanks!!
See trainers all the time that don’t any form off assessments
Everyone tells me i have a bodybuilding body, but i see my belly its just bloated guys its not even fat its fresturating i tried all
Thanks for this video. Am looking to do coaching for my local boxing. Have u got any videos for training in boxing or fitness?
Thanks for your video. I have a question. How much time I have to spend on the first assessment? I think it shouldn’t take all the time of first PT session with the new client..
I’m a beginner, I’m in gym to rehab a bulged neck injury but i figure that i can still get stronger whilst doing this. any tips?
I check a lot of workouts handbooks. This one from Unflexal is the best.
Thank you for this video really helpful! Quick question how would you design a programme for 34 yr old person who’s looking to loose weight?
I like your story and I agree with it. Can you send me 2000 dollars by paypal to help me pay for my tuition fees?I’m drowning on debts.
The rock works out from 4:00– 9:00 in the morning… That’s a good plan to follow
like your videos.. I am a trainer but need to increase my skill set as a personal trainer.. do you offer mentoring? or can you direct me to where I can get certified in doing better assessments and programing? I like to learn how to give a functional assessment so I really understand there limitations and provide better programing.
I just wanted to say your videos are definitely super motivating for me to workout! Keep em coming, man
If you’re looking for some solid business-building information, there’s a great site at http://www.TheSixFigureTrainer.com
There’s a lot of good information. I emailed the guy and he was really nice in emailing me back and giving me some great advice.
I start out with dynamic stretching, abs and 10 min cardio. Then hit the machines, weights and heavy bags. Always get in some MMA type exercises and also do agility drills 2x per week, so you don’t just build muscle and get slow, but stay flexible and quick as well. I do 10-15 more minutes cardio at the end, after glycogen reserves are low. Take 1tsp glutamine after every workout for sure and another before bedtime on workout days. You can also drink Powerade or the like during your workout to keep energy levels up.
Great vids brother thanks for taking time to share your knowledge, much appreciated!!
Ha. At first glance I thought you were recommending Meth as a supplement.
Great beginner advice. So hard to get started sometimes without a clear path.
Hello Brian, Its inspiring to see ur video fist time on personal training. could you please suggests some good books on this?
Thanks in advance.
Sumit
Dr A is my fitness guru.
Joined the FFP for life and couldn’t be more pleased.
I really appreciate your emphasis on functional assessments when you start with a new client and then every 6-8 weeks to check in. I have a similar education background so maybe it’s my understanding of postural dysfunction and muscular imbalance, and what that really means when you’re coaching someone. It’s not like I can just have someone to do a walking lunge and assume that because they were able to do it that it means they performed it optimally with zero compensation. Not to mention ignoring those things increases your clients risk of injury which is irresponsible on the trainers part and also means that client won’t be buying anymore sessions until they heal if at all.
I do cardio first thing in the morning leave the gym and come back a few hours later to train weights
Any god templates to build on for assessments? I am just getting into the PT game, I wanna do this right.
My ass just got a membership and one of my fears is the food part. Hopefully I can be an amateur chef after I get started hahaaaa
The problem i have with the gym is that you always start with the biggest plans and idea. Fast forward several months and you dropped it. The thought of taking your gym bag, changing and than going to the gym is too much combine with your busy schedule. I do all of my exercises at home so there is no excuse for doing it. Yes it will take some effort and you need some amount of money to start it but it is way better than to pay for a subscription at gym which you eventually will drop.
the gyms are opening and i’m tryna get stronger for basketball
I’m a beginner and i dream to become a body builder but i have no discipline at allllll NEED HELP only time i had discipline was when in the service
The question of moral obligations really seem obvious on its face, but it’s not. There are acts which can be considered moral, yet not be an obligation, and vice versa. For example, you could become a fireman, and help lots of people. Or you could, like Singer says, donate your money. However, these cannot be moral duties because you are simply being nice without any reason. Now, let’s say I manage to damage your property on accident. I was playing soccer, and hit your window. Now, it’s more than clear that I should be morally obligated to pay for it. Why? It’s my fault. For something to be a duty, it has to be your fault. Otherwise you’re being nothing but nice.
This distinction has to be made otherwise we can tell anyone that they’re obligated to do anything and everything that’s good, which makes no sense.
I m Personal Trainer in Brazil
Agree with you
Assessment is so important
Great vídeos e great tips
Thanks
