Is it possible to track the weight gain after surgery back to whether or not the patient had previously been overweight since childhood or gained their weight over time after adulthood as an additional factor that might influence increased rate of weight gain after surgical weight loss slows? Or are there any other factors in addition to the coloration that could help or predispose someone toward reduced weight gain after surgery?
Thank you for the video. I had RNY 16 years ago. I lost 200 lbs and I have lost and gained 40 to 50 at least 4 times. I have never met my goal weight which requires me to lose another 30 lbs. I’m on the ring, and I’m loving it! It’s reduced my period in length, flow, pain, mood symptoms, etc. It’s also helping to increase the estrogen in my body (my levels were on the low end of normal). It’s super easy to insert, use, and take out. It’s the best choice of birth control for me. I can’t really say about any side effects I may or may not be experiencing though. Because of my other physical and mental health issues and the ongoing prescribing of different medications and medication combinations, it’s incredibly hard, borderline impossible, for me to know what is causing what side effect. Sorry, y’all. All I know is my period sucks, and it’s helping me for that. I really recommend people look into the ring as a possible choice of birth control (I feel it’s a bit underrated and unknown), but please consult your doctor and go with what’s right for you. Don’t know if this is helpful or needed, but I thought maybe it might be.
It’s okay Abbey I can’t say the name of my shot either. I can say that I gained weight on it but at the same time when I started taking it I also got in a car accident and was basically bed ridden and then about 8 months later got put on topamax (to cope with the pinched occipital nerves from said accident) and lost 40 pounds in 4 months so….I lost it all now at least. Still waiting on the surgery to fix the nerves but my medical situation is hella complicated. I just call it my depo shot it works so much better than trying to pronounce that damn thing.
I’m confused with the whole idea of metabolism, calorie intake, gsv surgery and weight loss. I always thought that extreme calorie deficits (under 1200) causing rapid weight loss tanked metabolism, and that eating fuels metabolism. Recently there has been talk of the Biggest Loser contestants who have wrecked metabolisms making it harder than it ever was for them to lose weight. I’ve watched your videos about the “set point” and they’ve given me hope, but I’m really worried about that period of very low calorie intake after surgery keeping me from having a “normal” metabolism again. How soon do you recommend (and how soon can someone) get up to 1200 calories a day? I read a comment from a vsg’er who said she got up to 1,200 as quickly as she could post-op so as not to “tank” her metabolism, and lost most of her weight at the 1500 calorie mark. Can your body only handle that for so long before it has long term or permanent affects on your metabolism? This is sad to say but my surgeon has not seemed very tolerant of these rambling questions…and so I’m coming to you…again.:) Thanks!

Dr. Matthew Weiner I came across your videos tonight on a bariatric page on fb. Was considering having a bypass or revision. But after watchin your videos it shows its not that successful maybe lose 10-25 extra pounds.I had the gastric sleeve back in 2014. lost 85 pounds. Gained back 50 due to complications after the surgery. I ended up with a vitamin B1 deficiency. But was not caught until 4 months later. I lost the ability to walk for several months and was in rehab for 7 for physical therapy. I gained back do to not being active, depression and by making wrong food choices. I no longer see the surgeon that did my surgery. Because I went and paid him a visit after I got back home and he laughed and said this was not caused by the surgery. Its been over 2 years and I got major foot drop in both feet due to not being able to walk.Just had achilles tendon surgery on both feet. My question for you is, what is my best option. I feel I wasn’t given a real chance at this. I weigh 272/ 5″9

Strokes could absolutely happen, talk to your doctor. I have chronic headaches and migraines, estrogen could case me to have a stroke. (My doctor told me this) so I’m getting the implant in my arm that’s progesterone. Birth control is awesome, talk to your doctor and find what one works for you.

I’ve only been on keto for almost two weeks. I’ve lost 6 ish pounds going up and down by one pound. Kind of plateaued lately though. Anyways…. I do t feel it’s sustainable for me though I want to remain healthier. Still want junk food once in a while…. could I be fat adapted already or would that take much longer? Is the process any different for someone only on keto a couple weeks or same as in the video?

Yes, thank you for this! It’s so good!!! I’ve been on keto 7 months now. I initially did it for aesthetic reasons because restriction and extreme calorie counting was taking a toll on my body (I’ve had an unhealthy relationship with food before, ie: practically starving myself). But it helped me not obsess over my food once I got the hang of it, and I feel freer now. After doing a lot more research, I realized with the way I was eating and the symptoms I was experiencing, that I was on the road to prediabetes as Type 2 diabetes runs in my family. My father was recently put on insulin as his blood glucose levels were around a constant 350. He’s so weak, lost feeling in his feet, has atrophied muscles in his legs, etc. This is a man who has always lifted heavy and had so much energy all his adult life. No more. After waving my suggestions off for some time, he finally came to me to set up his keto diet. I used your formulas to come up with a general basis for his dietary needs. He’s been on keto since October and his levels are down 200-225 mg/dL!!!! He’s not been in the lower 100s in YEARS! His doctors are stunned and have already begun to lower his insulin dosage. He’s the type of person who, having lost all feeling in his feet, gotten procedures done to clear his blood vessels, etc., will need to maintain keto for the rest of his life. He literally has no self control and complains everyday , thank God my mom is on board with keto and cooks his food lol. As for me, I’m hoping to reset my body and get it to tolerate carbs a bit more. I love this way of eating but I want a season off every year where I can eat a few more (healthy) carbs that keto doesn’t allow for. This video is perfect for people like me! Thank you so much! ❤️❤️

Also if you research the symptoms of a male pill, I don’t particularly feel like dealing with a large male population on the pill. I did gain weight but because I eat very much and move very little so for me it is very good. The only scary thing is thinking about my liver, it is not very good for the liver, “they said”.

the only birth control that ever messed with my mood was the ortho tri cyclen. I was suicidal depressed on that. I mean granted i do have mdd and pstd but the pill was the only thing that had changed and my mood got better after I stopped taking it. currently on ortho cyclen and if anything it’s actually helped a bit when it comes to my mood swings

Day 1. Today I’m going to be adding this transition into play. I will also be doing IF so I can still try to maintain some form of ketosis. These were my past Macronutirens on keto. 5%, 75% and 20%. 16 carbs, 108 fat and 64 protein. With my new Macros 20%, 55%, and 25%, for the next 15 days I’ll consume 65 carbs, 79 fat, and 81 protein for 1300 calories a day. I expect to gain some water weight from this.
Starting off with a 22 hour fast: I broke my fast with a large salad with bacon bits and Ceasar sauce and then had some oatmeal with almond milk raspberries, avocado and coconut oil. Then some chicken. I most likely went over my macros because I wasn’t careful measuring out my Ceasar. didn’t notice how many calories oatmeal had. But it was VERY filling!

I didn’t gain weight but it exacerbated my anxiety quite a lot. Not interested in ever trying oral contraceptives again because of that
I am prone to migraines and when i used the contraceptive rings, i started developing very rough migraines almost every week. I could barely function and had to go home from work and go to bed, there was no other way to overcome it. I started being super anxious about using contraception and ive been clean for a year and a half now and the migraines have completely disappeared. I understand the risks im taking in terms of pregnancy etc and i am making sure everythings done to avoid any unexpected surprises but my life has definitely improved since ditching the ring. I also had a huge rise in my cholesterol levels being a vegetarian on whole foods and it has magically decreased ever since i was off contraceptives despite the very minimal changes in my diet.
I also was diagnosed with an auto-immune thyroiditis just recently which makes me wonder just how much contraception messed with my body. I understand that in some instances we need the security of not becoming pregnant but i cannot believe how these pills can still do you so much harm. This is not an educated and well-researched opinion and i know im just speaking from experience but heck!
I would 100% be off birth control if I could, but I don’t want even the slightest chance of getting pregnant until I’m done with college + my internship. I have pretty much every side effect possible.

I’m late to the game with this video but thank you for making this! I had about 60 lbs last year with keto and I have been trying to manipulate to fit my current lifestyle and it just wasn’t working. I went back to the drawing board and reworked my macros and created a weeks worth of meal plans. I’m still LCHF for now but I feel so much better already.
Great information here! I wish I had heard some of these things before starting the pill. I took the combined pill for a year; three different brands all gave me debilitating anxiety and panic attacks, so I switched to the progestin only pill. No more side effects! Now I know this is probably just me, but it would have been good to know this was a possibility before starting.

I’ve taken the pill for many years & it’s trustworthy for me. I used to work with three ladies who all got. pregnant using different types of birth controls. Pill, shot, & IU. THEN AGAIN, they could have done things like take antibiotics & not take their pill on time, etc. Before I worked at that job, I haven’t heard of anyone else claim they took BC (without variables) & still got pregnant. I’ve heard many, “I was taking antibiotics for an infection & oops!” I don’t have any major effects from the pill, but I’m not super sensitive to hormones so far in my life. I feel like the biggest thing that affects me in the weight, libido, & mood swing department is stress. If I’m too stressed, I’m a mess.

There’s such a stigma around birth control. There is absolutely nothing wrong with wanting to take the pill exclusively to prevent unwanted pregnancies actually, I would do it too if I didn’t already have to take it, but many people overlook the fact that for women who suffer from hormones related issues like myself, the pill is actually a medication! My quality of life improved so much since I started taking it: no more horrible cramps, no more mood swings, fatigue and almost constant bad mood, no more irregular periods, and no more acne! And I haven’t had any side effect at all! So yeah, as Abbey said: talk to your doctor about it and figure out if the pill is the best option for you or not, wether it is for health issues or contraception 😉

I think there is so much back and forth banter about weather or not it’s sustainable and for the most part I believe the answer comes down to a personal level. Personally speaking, I thrive on Keto, I have celiac disease therefore most carbs ( not naturally grown carbs such as potatoes) are harmful to me. Gluten makes me fatigued, depressed, harms my thyroid that then attacks my hormones, sever stomach pain and nausea. So for me Keto has changed my life, it’s made me energetic, healthy and overall happy. So it really is dependent upon each specific person. It’s not for everyone tho.
Would you recommend the Keto diet for someone (me) who is trying to lose fat before spring/summer?

What are your thoughts on using birth control for acne? How long (on average) does it take to help clear up skin? Have you heard of the birth control, Taytulla and do you know if it is a good medication for treating hormonal acne? Thanks for making this video! I was recently prescribed Taytulla (primarily because I’m getting married soon and we don’t want kids right away, but also for my skin. I used the month’ sample they gave me at my appointment, and it didn’t seem to do anything for my skin. When I went to get the prescription refilled it was super expensive (even with my insurance) and I’m debating if I should check with my doctor for something more affordable or just chance it once I’m married. I made a dermatology appointment to see if they could help, in case I decide to forgo asking for another type of birth control.

Oh my, well birth control still does it’s hormonal job so what do you expect no side effects? It also mask the actual problem.
This was helpful! I’m definitely seasonal keto. Keto works for me, I like how I feel and endure life on it. but it’s not realistic in the summer. I love fruit and cider at the cottage, the occasional campfire smore. Gotta live. Managing the transition off was definitely challenging last time, so this helps me for this go around. I love your videos and your channel! However this is one video I’m not quite on board with as it felt overly one-sided without mentioning the negative effects. You missed some important points of discussion. The first, and the one I thought for sure you’d mention as a nutritionist, is that there are actual nutritional deficiencies linked with the pill ( https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/23852908)– such as folic acid, vitamins B2, B6, B12, vitamin C and E and the minerals magnesium, selenium and zinc. Which means if you’re going to go on the pill you really need to be careful you’re getting enough nutrients and supplementing with a multiV is likely a good idea (something I would have loved to know when I went on it!). Women are put on the pill for a plethora of reasons, many of which involve hormonal issues–to help with acne, PMS, cramps, etc. However, it’s important to point out that going on the pill does NOT cure these issues, but instead merely masks them. I know this first hand because I was on the pill for 10 years and when I went off it my problems came back in full force. Only when I made the necessary lifestyle changes did I finally see improvements in my quality of life and hormonal symptoms. While I was on the pill I felt fine and didn’t have those symptoms so It was easier to continue with my less than ideal lifestyle choices. It can take over a year for your body to go back to normal and unfortunately if you’re already prone to those issues, ignoring the underlying issues can ultimately affect your fertility or make it much more difficult to conceive–I’m surprised you didn’t mention this. Also this doesn’t even go into the fact that the pill stops ovulation and ovulation is actually a really healthy positive thing for a woman’s body to go through–ovulation produces actual progesterone (as opposed to the very different progestin) and that monthly dose of progesterone reduces inflammation, regulates immune function, and supports thyroid, brain, bones, and breast tissue….Dr Lara Briden is a great resource on this. It is so scary that I feel hunger now at 4 weeks not ravishing hunger, but a feeling that is or is identical to hunger. The Nutritionist said it wasn’t possible… well okey dokey, then if it is acid or something else it is doing a good imitation of hunger (as it is not head hunger) . FYI tried the app, but since it gives only that info, it is too labor intensive to log there and at MFP for protein etc. I would love it if it had everything together

Ugh I’m so conflicted on my pill. On one hand, I have the lightest period ever, no cramping, no period cravings, no PMS, clear skin. On the other hand, I’ve been depressed for so long I hadn’t even realized it might be my pill. I’m experimenting soon by stopping my pill, I’m really hoping I don’t have to go through this for no reason and it is the reason behind my depression. But then that means I have to deal with having an awful period again. Women can’t win
So I’ve been on DP for about two years and I really have had no significant side effects. The day of the shot I might be a little tired, a little hungry, but besides that it’s great, Also the male version of the pill is going to be a lot harder. Easier to stop one egg than THOUSANDS of sperm. Birth control can also be used for treating medical problems. I would go up to 6 months without a period and then be on it for 10+ days, which is really bad. DP is keeping my lady parts doing what they need to!

I have done what I call semi-Keto and your HFLC for one year and my weight has been exactly the same after Keto. I kid you not. It’s pretty amazing how nothing affects my body weight, my body stays exactly the same. It’s kind of weird. I hope I am not giving myself cholesterol . I am going for blood work here pretty soon.
