Olive oil goes as follows. I buy cheap extravergine oil in the store for cocking and buy real oil from farmers in the coastal region for 10-15 bucks for adding it to finished dishes.

It is agreed that avos are an excellent health food. However, before you buy your next avo, check out a Netflix movie called Rotten and see the circumstances surrounding avo production. Just some ‘food’ for thought.
You often say that a (low fat) whole food, plant based diet reverses heart disease and recommended it. You also say low fat or high fat doesn’t matter as long as it’s whole plant foods.. I’m looking for the heart disease protection, where is the line drawn on low fat for this? Does it even matter if it’s whole plant sources?

I eat a low additive guacamole and various unsalted nuts each day including walnuts and I grind flax seeds.. I’m not sure I would make the cut for low fat, depending on where the line is drawn. I would amend some of this if it wasn’t recommended.
EVOO I take in a shot glass and swirl it around my tongue and down it. You should taste olives in that oil. My method is better than ingesting a spoonful.
Most counterfeit olive oils are either canola oil mixed with chlorophyll or cheap olive oil mixed with canola oil. Now look at the label. If it states that the oil is a mix from several countries avoid it. It’s crap. Genuine EVOO should come from one region or province. Look at the label for a seal of approval from a governing body from the country of origin along with independent bodies.
To that end head to Trader Joe’s. There’s one EVOO from Sicily that fits the bill beautifully. Much cheaper is one from California. There no government body that awards it a seal of approval however there is a seal of authenticity from an independent body. Forgive me I forget the brand names of each right now. I’ll get back to you all on that.
Great lecture. Couple of questions on the timing/frequency of meals. I consume 35 grams whey protein and 50 grams dextrose (gummy bears) post workout. What is your opinion on waiting 3 hours after this “meal” or consuming another meal within 1 hour like most bodybuilding nutrition advice proclaims due to the post workout meal being “easily absorbed.” Also, what is your opinion on how long to wait to train after eating your last meal given your body wants to utilize energy on your digestive system over your skeletal muscle system after you eat. Than you.

Makes sense. Combining sugar and fat is always a bad idea. But there is one thing missing in this research. Are the people in this research addapted to fat or to carbs?
When normally on a high carb diet, a high load of fat is more likely to not be taken in by the cells. They are filled with glycogen and as a result will not be too interested in taking up fat. In a fat addapted subject, the cells will want to take up dietary fat more easily.
And ofcource, whole food like avocado is great. A meal should always come in a complete nutrient package, not isolated.
It’s like you mentioned in another video, a salad should always have enough fat in it for all nutrients to be absorbed.
A few questions…
1. You talked about Bioavailability vs leucine content, are they really independent or is leucine really what’s driving bio availability?
2. You talked about glycogen depletion triggering Hgh. I’ve read that those people with more endomorphic body types that they don’t as readily use glycogen stores. Which I believe is due to the insulin resistance. I may be a little off in my understanding but could you just speak to how body types may influence hgh and if it is worth consideration for anything that can be done nutritionally?
3. Double dose of protein for older people from 20 to 40, but you also said 3 grams is leucine would cover the old person. So isn’t it 40 or 3 whichever comes first depending on source?

Hey, i hope you can answear my curiosity. What is your point of view about the increasing concerns that meat and proteins are actually causing illness and people should go vegan? Not sure but i think there are medical studies on that side as well. Isn’t over eating cause problems from other perspectives too?
Currently i workout at 0430 and work (tree trimmer) at 0630. I slam a shake (whey, milk, pb, oats) upon waking and when i arrive on my worksite i wont be able to eat again until 1200. My post workout food options are to eat again before work( 2 hours from previous leucine spike) or during lunch break ( 8 hours from last spike, 7 hours post workout) should i skip post workout shake or just do both? Would whey pre and casein post make a difference? I did watch the video lol.

I eat 1/2 of an avocado every day. Do you recommend having 1/2 an avocado a day or having 1 whole avocado a day?
I am from Spain where most people cook with olive oil. The quality of oil here might be better than there but it is said not cook with extra virgin olive oil but instead to use refined olive oil precisely because the virgin has polyphenols and other stuff that will oxidize. I don’t think the refined olive oil here is already oxidized as the bottles will often list the peroxide index and other undesirable products.
Sometimes the lack of throat stinging can be due to the variety, most would sting but my favorite one from Arbequina olives doesn’t and has almost no bitterness either but a nutty and somewhat fruity flavor. But most of the time you are right, it should be harsh on the throat.
I believe that olive oil is what lies behind Spanish longevity and definitely felt worse during a time I switched to sunflower oil due to cost (1/2 to 1/3 cheaper). Avocado oil is rare and really expensive here.
All whole plant fats including avocados do seem to trigger inflammation in my skin:(

Then I eat a snack at 9 AM like peanut butter jelly sandwich just for the calories (I know I wont trigger MPS)
Do I have to wait until noon to eat and get my MPS since I ate a snack at 9 AM or I can eat my lunch at 10 AM (3 hours from my breakfast)

If I eat a few bites of chicken and then come back an hour and a half later and eat 8oz of chicken, only the first few bites from earlier get utilized during the muscle protein synthesis phase, and the 8 oz 1 1-2 hours later are essentially just calories not contributing to muscle restoration, repair, growth?

As far as plant-based protein sources go; pea protein isolate seems to be the king, right? PDCAAS close to 0.9 and 8.4 grams of leucine per 100 grams. That means that a 35 gram serving of pea protein isolate gives almost 3 grams of leucine. Not bad eh? What’s the caveat here?
random question but I can’t find an answer anywhere else on the internet. Does ON whey protein have leucine in it?
Should we supplement leucine and if so how and when should we.
What about in reduction of a clogged artery? Esselstyn fund that eating fat was preventing patients from reversing arterial plaques on a whole plant based diet… Would eating avicados have the same effects on heart diseased patients that want to reverse the condition?
So, it is impossible to gain bodyfat from protein because the process of converting protein into fat and storing it takes more calories than what is stored? So the KETO people were right?
The question then is which source does the body prefer for fuel? Say one needs 3000kcal a day, and eats 2000kcal from fat and carbs, and 1500kcal from protein, does it first utilize the fat and carbs for fuel, and then 1000kcal of calories from the protein, and then just turn the remaining 500kcal into heat? Or does it burn the 1500kcal from the protein, 1500kcal from fat and/or carbs, and then store 500kcal from the fat and/or carbs as bodyfat?
As long as the body prefers fat and carbs as fuel, it would seem logical that one could eat fat and carbs to the point of getting maintenance calories from them, and then stuff themselves with however much protein they want, and still maintain bodyfat.

Thank you so much for the great information. In regard to the refractory period, how does a pre workout meal effect things? If my pre and post workout meals are less than 3 hours apart, am I not getting the benefits from my post meal? An example would be a paleo breakfast at 8AM, training from 9-10 and a post workout meal at 1030.

I used to use coconut oil for my face and I think hands down the avacado oil is way better and isn’t as gross and greasy feeling and olive oil is one of the worse oils to clog pores. It always felt like my skin had a smothery feeling when I used it like it couldn’t breathe

Little info: The recommended daily intake for leucine is 39mg per kilogram of body weight, or 17.7mg per pound. A 100 gm chicken leg has about 70% of rdi of leucine. 1 large egg is 20% rdi.

Could you just advise to eat a 80% whole food/20% ‘junk’ food diet? I’ve run out of patience with olive oil. Now I just eat a stupefying volume of organic olives I’m very happy with my olives.
The oils I maintain at my skillet are 1) avocado 50% of the time, then 2) Ghee, 3) coconut oil, 4) bacon fat.
Then insuring a positive Omega 3 balance, supplementing with Cod Liver oil, Krill Oil and sardines & Mackerel.

Whn you talk about high fat diets being ‘healthy’ what is the timeframe here?
Are you referring to chronic consumption over weeks/months, or total amounts per day, or week?
For instance, doing a few days per week of “ketogenic” dieting, mixed with low fat, higher carbohydrates on other days?
If the same total fat calories are consumed each week by someone on a high fat diet every day?
It’s simple, play it safe cook with Avocado oil, everything else use olive oil!

Is there significant benefit to spreading out calories across the day? As long as you get 40 grams (or whatever) of protein 4 times (or however many) a day, can you get most of your calories in one of those meals without significant muscle building cost?
Too much polyunsaturated fat for cooking. Heating them creates oxidation products. Just use tallow, lard, butter or ghee (clarified butter) for heated applications.

I microwave with olive oil, 210F max EVOO. Nothing denatures, mix with bromelin powder, shoulder beef, pork butt, melts in your mouth. Never heard of the tickle test for EVOO but will be doing. Search websites for rec’d OO brands that don’t lie. Google it.

The King of Broscience is back at it again with his nonsense trying to push his affiliate links. The truth is there is no such thing as a healthy cooking oil, you never want to separate fat from it’s fiber. Free-based fats like oils cause something caused post-prandial hyperlipidemia, or also known as “sludge blood”, where your blood stream gets flooded with fat cells causing the blood to thicken; which as you’d imagine is extremely bad for cardiovascular health. Stay away from all cooking oil or at the minimum use as little as possible if you’re truly looking for optimal health.
I would have liked to see the 2006 Walnut study compare olive oil to walnut oil instead of whole walnuts (kind of convenient for your argument about whole foods). Perhaps the olive oil had inflammatory effects because of the high amount of omega 6 fatty acid in it and the walnuts had an anti-inflammatory effect because they have more omega 3.
The obvious shortcoming in this discussion is the assumption that “vascular function” is the same as “flow-mediated dilation). There is probably more to it than just dilatation. These experiments based on acute effects should be only the beginning of the story. We should look for studying these diets over periods of months if not years.

I cut down some fat, from 20% (112 kg)to 17%(102 kg) while getting my strength in the basic lifts up on 3×3. I just finally hit a 180 kg Squat for 3×3. But lately I am extremely hungry. And this is dangerous because when I am always hungry I will binge. My question is if I should stop being in a deficit now and eat more or keep on. Because I always thought when you lose weight you’ll get less hungry cause you need less calories. However it doesn’t feel like it.

The problem with avocadoes is the high persin content. This was brought to my attention by Dr Greger. Although persins are detoxified by the liver, what damage does the toxin do that is either in transit to the liver and/or not absorbed from the gut? A recent epidemiological study showed that vegans in the USA have higher than expected rates of rectal cancer. Could a higher consumption of avocadoes among USA vegans be the reason?
Very amused that the entire planet considers Avocado as the symbol of Vegetarianism and/or healthy eating. Such bullshit. Yes, some avocado is fine, but the symbol for our food should be the Sweet Fruit, not some stupid avocado that can be eaten only in combinations with other things.
What’s interesting to me about the peanuts though, to my knowledge most peanuts are cooked in peanut oil I don’t know where these people find peanuts that aren’t cooked in peanut oil or some type of oil any store within a hundred miles of my house does not sell peanuts that are not cooked in some type of oil or roasted with some type of oil so I’m not sure if this study consisted of roasted or cooked peanuts with oil. You would think the oil would hurt things so I’m not sure it wasn’t stated in this video if the peanuts were cooked in oil or not. You know it’s very difficult for me to resist certain foods. I fell off the wagon the other day it was my step son’s graduation from high school and there was cake available and I had a slice of cake and I felt so guilty afterwards eating the cake. The problem is that every now and then I’ll slip and I’ll eat something I shouldn’t. I just know for me that I still have problems with my cholesterol even being on this diet I don’t exercise as I used to due to a back injury so I’m not able to go jogging and do a lot of high-intensity cardio like I used to. I can’t do that stuff anymore. My lipids are not ideal and the doctor wants to put me on statins. I just don’t know what to do though because it could be a hereditary thing I don’t know but I need to get my lipids in check and I have a feeling it has to do a sugar I don’t eat much processed sugar if any it’s very low I only eat generally two meals a day and I snack in between those meals with fruit usually eat oatmeal every morning have some type of plant-based dinner every night and I’m just not sure what else I can do. All I know is I don’t want to be on statins that’s for sure. So I guess my question is does having an overall lipid panel that isn’t ideal while on a plant-based diet necessarily mean that my artillery function is poor? I like Terra Delyssa Extra virgin olive oil. Packaged in dark amber glass bottles with both the press date and expiration date clearly stamped. Slight peppery taste but not harsh. Seems to check all the boxes. And it’s available at a Walmart in my area for less then $10 for a large bottle. My guess for the low price is Walmart and their volume plus Terra Delyssa is a Tunisian olive oil, which Tunisia has a long history of olive’s and olive oil. Great Video! Thanks doctor. I’ve been told to stop eating nuts and seeds to get rid of my bloating as they may be adding some toxins into my body. They said when having nuts and seeds Ive got water retention so water can dilute the toxins.. I’ve been vengan for 9 months and I’m finding kind of difficult to meet my caloric intake so I eat big amounts of whole grain plant based diet (70%carbs, 15%fats, 15%protein) sometimes the percent of fats is higher so I can meet my calorie intake otherwise I lose weight. I took this on and decided putting avocado oil in my smoothie, about less than one table spoon a day. The end result was an increase of triglycerides and VLDL. Could you please explain why this may have happened?

So, having a PWO containing BCAA’s before two hours of training, would make it so that whey protein after workout has no use? So then the logical thing in the 2 hour scenario would be to have a meal one good hour before training to initiate MPS, then have BCAA’s to prevent muscle breakdown during training (or is that just bs?), then have the whey protein directly after training? (Or is the whole “eat within half an hour of training” just nonsense?)

There’s no data that says that even in starvation situations that your body burns more muscle than fat or carbs.
3-5 hours doesn’t work perfectly. I’m 200 lbs, if I’m eating 200-220g of protein, and each meal is 30g, that’s 7 meals. Eating 7 times a day if I waited 3 hours between 30g boluses, that’s 21 hours of feeding. That doesn’t work. I think Rhonda Patrick cited that keeping your feeding hour about 9 hours gives you the majority of the benefits of fasting, and as you pointed out gives you 3 MPS spikes with the boost in HGH.
Concerning High Carb, Low carb, look up Peter Attia’s Generation U-Can presentation for endurance athletes. There are products that let you stay fueled without burning out your endocrine system.
When you say that their cholesterol numbers are really bad, do you mean their ratios are bad? or their absolute values are bad?

i originally bought a bottle of avacado oil to cook my frozen veggies on the stove with, just in a frying pan on high heat and stirring them aroudn until they absorbed the oil and were cooked enough to eat.
But i sort of steered away from that and the avacado oil just sat on my shelf in the cabinet.
However, i have been taking greens powders with lots of vitamin a, k, and e the fat soluble vitamins, so i decided to try using the avacado oil in my drinks i use a mason jar and shake the powder with water until it dissolves, i now add 1 teaspoon of the avacado oil into my drinks and shake it up to enhance the absorption of the vitamins that are fat soluble, since i dont eat much fat anyway other than fish oil, which is low in fat.
I was just wondering if this is a good idea, or a bad idea?

Avocado oil has become my secret weapon in my keto lifestyle. I put it in practically everything. It’s versatile and incredibly satiating. My version of Italian dressing for example is avocado oil, garlic powder, basil, parmesan cheese, salt, pepper and crushed red pepper. Shake it up and pour liberally over romain. It’s delicious and really satisfies.
Love avocados and it’s health benefits, unfortunately it’s too expensive for some of us.

I hate avocados the greasy/waxy and don’t taste very good. Trying to eat one for a better balance diet. If health worth this distress?
There was a study that just came out that many avocado oils are tainted and/or not really avocado oil.

I want to know definitively if type 2 diabetics and those with non alcoholic fatty liver disease can safely eat high fat foods like nuts, seeds, avocado, coconut and so on, and still reverse and repair those issues? I haven’t seen this addressed yet, other than speculation.
Important correction however: Avocados are NOT 77% fat Not even remotely. Avocados are no more than 15-17% FAT.. but of that fat, 75% is ‘good’ fat.
I even took the video back to be sure I heard you say what I thought you said. Repeat: Avodacos are only 15% FAT in total. Do not calculate your macros using the above 77% percentage in the video. Ta

I think you’re missing the most important parts of the cellular processes including respiration. enzymes do all the work including building amino acids from existing tissue and from proteins.
“You’re gonna gain fat” Uhhh they’re really high in calories. Use in moderation.
Do NOT keep your avocado oil in the fridge if you’re going to cook with it. That should have been specified. It drastically lowers the smoking point and inreases the amount of smoke. As a dressing its fine cold but cook it at room temp. Trust me, don’t learn the hard way.

This makes me think (obviously) that the same would hold true with bread products. Those that are refined (almost all, even artisanal and gourmet) are probably making an oxidative bomb on ingestion. Those that are consumed whole, not so much.

Dr Berg I’ve read the Eat Right4Blood Type book and it lists avocado as an avoid for my blood type…I love avocados too so what is your opinion on this
From my experience, good quality minimally processed oils need to be kept in the refrigerator or freezer if it’s used sporadically. Oils will start getting rancid in a few weeks if kept in a warm place. Avocado oil seems less sensitive to heat than olive, sesame or walnut oil.
Have y’all considered doing a follow up on this? Especially with regard to some of the new research surrounding the conventional model vs carbohydrate-insulin model of obesity? It’s all very difficult for me to parse and get a feeling for whether or not the rough consensus still lies in the same place as it did when this episode was posted:)
