Ashtanga Yoga has a lot of specialized terms. Learn words like Mysore, moon day, shala, bandha, and drishti to get ready for your first class.Below you will find the derivation for many of the words you will hear as you learn Ashtanga yoga.
In particular, you will be able to understand the meaning behind the names of the various poses. General Terminology; Opening Chant; Numbers; Warm-Up Poses; Standing Poses; Seated Poses; Finishing Poses; Rest. There are many yogas, but yoga is only one. This is totally true.
The original Yoga is RAJA YOGA or Classical yoga or Ashtanga Yoga. Ashtanga Yoga for beginners means ROYAL YOGA or “Royal Union.” Its main goal is the union with the Supreme. It has. What Is Ashtanga Yoga?
Ashtanga Yoga translates to ‘8 limbed yoga’, referring to the 8 limbs of Yoga. The 8 limbs of Yoga are guidelines that were intended for yoga practitioners to follow in order to live a more disciplined life.As the structure of the Ashtanga Yoga Series is an intelligent order, with the background of Vinyasa Krama (step by step guide of movements) you will learn to ‘wind up or down’ the Ashtanga sequence. By completing the Training you will be able to create any general or subject based Yoga class or create any kind of level of Vinyasa Flow. The number one reason people give me, for why they do not want to start Ashtanga, is they do not want to memorize the sequence.
Memorization has never been an issue for me. In fact, it is the only reason I made it through school because, God knows, I didn’t actually learn anything. For many, I suspect it goes way further then not wanting to memorize and has more to do with being vulnerable.
Whether you’re new to yoga or somewhat experienced, you’ve probably heard a name or two that everyone else seems to recognize, but you’re left nodding along and telling yourself to look that person up. I’ve been there (and still am sometimes). So let’s take a look at some of the big names in yoga, past and present.Ashtanga directly translates to eight limbs or branches, and it’s also a common, traditional style of yoga.
Ashtanga yoga is a physical, flow-style practice that follows a specific sequence of postures. How you might hear it used in class: Ashtanga yoga is intense — have you seen how many chaturangas they do?Join Richard Rosen—author and co-founder of the former Oaklandand San Francisco Bay-based Piedmont Yoga Studio—for Sanskrit 101: A Beginner’s Guide.
Through this 6-week introductory online course, you will learn Sanskrit translations, refine your pronunciations, explore its historic highlights, and more. The Ashtanga Primary Series is called Yoga Chikitsa, meaning yoga therapy, because of the cleansing and toning effect it has on both body and mind. On a physical level the asanas (poses) of the Primary Series build strength and flexibility in the body, loosening tight muscles and realigning and detoxifying the body and nervous system.Ashtanga Yoga teaches that everything is linked together. Every single movement is assigned a breath, or vinyasa, including how we get in and out of postures.
Every asana, in a way, is the blue print or preparation for something else to come.Ashtanga Yoga As It IS (Revised Third Edition) By Matthew Sweeney Astanga Yoga As It Is by Matthew Sweeney is much in demand, since it is the only resource that fully details the primary, intermediate and advanced A & B series of Astanga Yoga. In the text portion of the book the type is small and the.I first started learning the Ashtanga practice from Beryl Bender Birch’s book, “Power Yoga” and from a local teacher in central Florida who taught from a modified led primary format.
Some months after that start, I moved to Miami, FL and found my first Mysore teacher.Ashtanga Primary Series Yoga Chikitsa (योग चिकित्सा, Yoga Cikitsā) is the Sanskrit (संक्सृत्, Saṁksr̥t) name for the primary series sequence and it can be translated as Yoga Therapy. The benefits of Ashtanga yoga primary series is that it supposed to purify and heal the body.
Inversions can be fun and frightening and are not to often seen in a regular yoga class. You should always practice inversions with caution, and until you feel safe and steady always with the guidance of a yoga instructor. You should stop what you are doing straight away if you feel any discomfort in the neck or cervical spine.

Madam I too want learn ashtanga yoga kindly tell me the address or ashtanga yoga phone number where could I learn
Hi, thats a great sequence, just pay attention to correct names if you teach them, @ 4:06 it is Samasthiti not SamastitiHi:)
Samasthiti (sama = same, equal / sthiti = to establish, to stand) translates to establishing an equal and steady stance
Great video! One of the best yoga anatomy videos I’ve found on YouTube
i love the way she does it more slowly so you can really focus on how to do it, and i think slow, relaxed is more beneficial because you can advance the speed if you have become more limber and you dont stress through every pose. < 3 from norway best instructions i have seen
How to practice jump back and jump through? Actually, I am expert in Hatha yoga. But due to some fat on stomach, arms and thies, and also less core and arms strength, could not lift the body on hands which is the basis of Ashtanga. Please help and guide me how to practice.
I liked your teaching and guidance. So felt of asking you abt tips on doing.
Thank you so much for these tips as I found them to be very helpful especially when you mentioned how everything comes from the midline and to practice shavasana for longer at the end of practices as I find myself speeding through this portion!
You are the most kind and compassionate yoga teacher. Thank you ❤

Your videos have helped me a lot to improve in the details, such as breathing, dristis, and transitions. It became very clear and didactic. Thank you for your valuable contribution, congratulations for your work!
Beautiful I do the 5 Tibetan rites. I was challenged. I’m proud to be 58. And doing 21 of each rites daily.

i would like to know where she got her yoga top from. it looks very comfortable and flexible.
I’ve been looking this video with such a detailled explanation on the names of the postures and the exact moment you should inhale or exhale, nobody seems to care share that information that may seem obvious but for some of us it is not. Thank you so much Peter. I suscribe to your channel!
Great video!!! Very well done!! Thank u for sharing, really generous!
How nicely you have refreshed all these concepts in my memory again. Moving on to part 2 right now. Sending Love & Peace, sister.

Laruga, you look like you’re literally floating in the air! So cool to see. Thank you for this:)
One question to the channel “do they follow yogic diet? “
Please reply.

This is so helpful and should be mandatory viewing for beginners as it explains some fundamentals we often get wrong in the beginning of practice. Love.
It would be a shame if you did not build muscle when these normal people accomplish it so easily using Zippy Fat Loss (go google it).
Thank you Peter! Thank you to you and other teachers who harness technology such as youtube to share your teaching with people from all over the world and truly making the practice accessible to those of us who may not have means of accessing it. Thank you from the bottom of my heart!
I am glad that the ancient wisdom of INDIA (yoga and meditation) is being adapted and appreciated all over the world now..
Thanks Peter. Just read the book”Gururji” and have started practising looking at the video of primary series shot in 1993. I loved your explanation of how to breath. Thank you very much. God bless
Joey Miles is awesome! Seriously I find his tips super helpful.
love this! being doing it for a week. Perfect for quarantine. Thank you.
I wish she had more like this for beginers.
It’s Asana, Astanga Yoga includes 8 steps. 1. No killing, no sex, no stealing, no telling lie, no gift taking from others. 2. Getting up at 3:30 am, eating fixed time, half belly,……… Etc.
I really wanna start practicing ashtanga yoga. This is a great video to begin with.
Thanks Sigismondi and Laruga ❤️❤️
Thank you so much for a very informative conversation. This help me a lot on my home practice.
Great work as always, Namaste
I’m so glad you mentioned savasana! It is something so neglected in yoga classes nowadays, especially in the west, but even in places like Thailand I’ve seen, where students hardly stay for more than a couple of minutes in final relaxation. I was taught from the very beginning to give my students long savasana, many of them guided. Most teachers I come across and talk to do not know how to give/teach savasana or instill it in the class. They feel very uncomfortable with this, and hence just breeze through it, and often give it as an option. Unfortunately, that is depriving the student of the most important and sweet part of the practice.
You’re magical in my eyes. I’d love to see what you were like as a beginner.
Don’t know why I’m here. Saw a fine ass Black woman, now I’m touching my toes.

and you’re not chosen by the 10 best yogis of america???

Yoga with British accents is great, especially when then say Yoger
It is only the voice of our egos that causes us to think we are separate and different. Through the practice of Ashtanga Yoga we remove that veil of illusion (Maya) that hides us from our true nature. The modern day father of this practice SKP Jois taught westerners the 3rd limb Asanas, first before Yama, and Niyama, because we need the physical purification that comes from Asana practice. Automatically we will want to live pure lives and relate to all living beings with love (Ahimsa)
i did this after a 35 min run,,,,, out the all the people doing yoga……first timers like myself should record themselves and see how funny they look
O find ashtanga male practitioners have odd shaped legs and arms. Stew is an exception.
Which effect is this in video and which asana you are sitting at starting
Thank you for the comments. I have the full series in 1 video and the volume is much higher. it should be easier if you use the full length practice on the website. I also have videos of Guruji. ww (dot) ashtangayogavideos (dot) com
love your voice! Thank you for having the opportunity to do yoga with you at home, especially in these tought days
I’m new to yoga in general. After doing this I felt really good and challenged, but this was harder than it looks. Pace was a touch too fast for me to both experience the movements and learn them at the same time (but I think that’s because I’m still a newbie). I look forward to revisiting this video for more practice so I can appreciate it better. I did appreciate the calm tone.
Well you must be ignorant to reply to someone you don’t know the 1st thing about as an ‘ass’ You’re just drawing an awful lot of assumptions. 1 being about how I think yoga and Hinduism are related, 2 for jumping to the conclusion I am Christian…3 for dragging all ‘westerners’ over a cliff because you seem to think we all have the same beliefs, which by the way, is a tad bit racist:) In my initial comment I didn’t claim to know nor practice any of what you assume. I pointed out what was said.
I found more benefit doing 20 min yoga with attention, than one or two hours of hard yoga asanas.
Durant 2 hours yoga, we lose many things include breath attention. We use the body in hard way, it lead to hurt the tendons, joint. I like how she does, it smooth and easy flow. Thanks you.
After only Three weeks, I already lost ten pounds simply by applying this yoga guide “Yοmzοzο Kena” (Google it). The pictures are super handy and a must for almost any yoga exercise guide. This guide additionally shows you a great deal of poses, that are different enough to satisfy both starters and help much more advanced yoga practitioners improve..
Thank You…very helpful, especially the savasana. I am a yoga teacher and I have been neglecting that part of the practice
Does anyone else shake horribly when they do the floor lift, i could not hold it
1. Create the right ambiance/attitude
2. Listen to your breathing
3. Movement and breath
4. The posture is the foundation
5. Stabilizing action
6. Clarification of the 6 directions
7. Pay attention to the feeling in the hands, feet, face
8. Practice at the same time and spot
9. It’s okay if you understand
10. Do savasana for a long time. 1 hour practice::5 minutes savasana
We can see something like that on an MRI, right? Thanks so much!
We r speech less front of u and your precious and hard yoga practicing. U r so kind and so sweet. We r respect u and your your yoga family and skillfull yoga classes.
Purple Valley is top-notch content, I have got so many gems from only seven or eight videos. It is often rich in technicality taught by people who truly know the body which is very reassuring. There is so much great Yoga content online that enriches so many lives. I am very grateful for your teaching and insights in these unusual and uncertain times. I hope you are all well at Purple Valley. Thanks so much. Namaste:)
Hi Laura, I leave next month for India (yoga teacher training) and have been watching all of your videos as in to be more thoroughly prepared. Thank you! Do you by chance have any recommendations on how I can even better prepare for the training? I am hoping to get a yoga internship (or work exchange somewhere here in Asia) soon after completing the course. Thanks again. I am feeing much more relaxed and knowledgeable from watching your videos, so thank you.:)
Thanks so much! All day I have been looking forward to lighting my candles, getting my mat, and getting down with Glaser.
* Want others’ thoughts…
If you have chosen Ashtanga as you practice, why did you choose this type of yoga?
Thanks
Hello Peter Sir, this is ur new Indian fan. Im absolutely awestruck by the technicality of ur yogaasana. Loved it to the core. The fluidity that comes along in ur posture is worth a million praises. I found ur video to be highly motivating. Please keep up the good work. Hope to c thousands of more videos from ur side in coming times. God bless you.
excellent technic of teaching,. beutiffully perfomed. thank you
Seems interesting, but.I did -20 lbs past 30 days.More here hawght.so\#LXE2Xoh
I think this pose requires either particular anatomical proportions (long thighs, short calves, no broad shoulders) or an unusual amount of hip flexibility (like ability to perform contortion-style forward bend, more than 180 degrees). It is impossible for me to work the shoulder behind the knee as shown. The only position where shoulder-under-knee halfway works is in a deep forward lunge, but then it only works on one side because it utilizes twisting the whole torso to get the shoulder under.
I have been doing this yoga practice for about three months now and i have gotten to understand the sun salutation much better now. i use to do it at a gym and couldnt really understand the method. you are fantastic! thanks for doing this. Love you beautibul!!!!!!
This video helped me make a connection! For the last 3 weeks, I have been rushing out of Mysore and not doing shavasana for very long at all. For the last 3 weeks, I have been very frazzled and my practice seems to have come to a standstill. I was about to seek the help of an energy worker to figure out what is “wrong” with me. Thanks for the tips. I will write them down and integrate them into my practice.
This 20 minute yoga session for me connects on a more spiritual level than merely an exercise. I appreciate that. Thank you for making this.
Thank you. This was amazing. the practice was perfect as a short one. Your voice was peaceful and helped me with the focus.
Hi! This is my 6th day doing yoga with you. I am complete beginner and I love the way you explain, and your voice is very soothing. Are you going to make more beginner videos?
where can I find the prayer written out and perhaps translated? I’d like to learn it.
Beautiful presentation. The explanation along with the graphics makes for a perfect tool for teaching. The focus on dristi and the flow of inhalations and exhalations into one breath is great.
So. Ain’t anyone going to say anything about the white shadow at around 7:02 7:08????
‘Prayer should not be offensive to any other religion”??????? Soory mate but Yoga & Hindu religion are inter related..if any other religion finds it offensive they can basically FO
I really appreciate this yoga session. It gives me life and renews my energies. Thank you!
Wish the audio quality was better. It’s worth it to have a professional work on it and re-release.
Excellent ashtanga yoga posters. I am practicing them daily. I am finding lot of difference in my body and life styles. I could able to keep my sugar level well in control. I am healthy. My body is becoming very light and feeling very active through out the day. Ashtanga yoga is really working like a medicine against the diabetes. My digestion system has improved a lot. Before practicing the ashtanga yoga my sugar levels were very high and within three months of my regular practice the sugar levels brought to normal stage. Thanks to Mr. Peter Hurley for his videos of Ashtanga yoga. These videos are very useful for all sections of people to keep their body keep fit. BEST TEACHING METHODSREERAMULU, INDIA
Thank you! For the first time I feel really engaged in exercising yoga everyday with you. Never happened before, you’re great! I’m 62!
OMG and again first page of comments about religion. I am so tired of this. Youtube should all get you blocked.
The clearest, most beautiful video for a short ashtanga sequence and all the fundamentals. Enjoyed it dearly. Thank you!
Doing shavasana for long time is very useful to relax every cell of the body….thank you
Namasta…Peter thanks for being humble and teaching the mass’s with accent skills…OM!
¡Muchas gracias! Saludos desde la ciudad de Barquisimeto, Venezuela.
When I heard you’ve been practising it for 25 years I was shocked! I thought you are 25:)
well listen again to what he says & the make comments to me..as for westerners did u never hear of the way catholic & other churches are throwing out yoga in uk becoz its part of the Hindu philosophy? majority of u westrenrs hv made yoga into some type of work out for reducing ur fat butts instd of understanding the way it was for the gr8 ancient vedic seers of India
By stating your intent to be inoffensive, You Offend people who actually Mean what they say. Enough already.
It’s extremely rare to have a long savasana offered in a public class if ever! Teachers really need to reconsider this and understand the importance of calming the nervous system. The more teachers incorporate this in public classes the more it becomes a consistent offering in more and more classes.
This is the best yoga video ever! I love it! Thank you for helping people practice yoga in their own homes!
Thank you Laura. Your video and communication skills are terrific!
Full Bhuja has your chin down….It was a great video but to stop there may confuse people into thinking head on the floor is the full variation
I first saw your amazing and beautiful ashtanga demo so when I saw you had a class available I was so psyched! I loved this sequence! You do such an amazing job and give me inspiration to aspire too within my own practice! Thank you so much for this
Really amazing crystal clear explanations. I loved it. Thankyou so much for uploading.

Are you supposed to take normal breathes in between each designated inhale/exhale or are you supposed to try and follow those breathes only?
Very useful and easy to follow. That board was a bit daunting when the video started, but your explanations made it really accessible. Thanks.
@mncypeu sure is right. even i was very sad since i workout well for abs but nothing was coming. Between My international body building trainer also recommended this 7 food elements to kill your fat belly. check it out here >>> bit.ly/VC7TrT?=ueknak
Thank you for this! It’s very useful and clear! I’ll share it forward. ♥ Can’t wait to visit you all in Purple Valley someday:)!!
I was also breathing while resting my gaze on the nose. On your nose.
Thank you for your views on Ashtanga yoga, it was informative.
Shylaja shouted at me unreasonably when I suggested I make wheat gruel for my mother and then I took the wheat mixed it with Kinley water amrit sugar and amulya water and left the wheat gruel down but she made it. My mother had only few spoons from what I made. Shylaja and the criminals are holding my mother hostage and harming me harmed me harmed her. I dont owe anything to shylaja. I sense the food she is giving her is not increasing her life energy and the thieves are trying to kill her and me. I am trillion times the way shylaja reacted she is partner to crime and she might have food poisoned today itself. I do not have atms issued to me suspect Durga temple is conducting programmes and has money flow. My mother did not join me in coimbatore kaliappa lodge instead shylaja answered her phone and reported her fallen down. My atms and money is not given to me by the thieves who run a shaktheyam movement or something using my money claiming I would break up with her but they are slowly killing me and her and has harmed me In hospitals.
ur an ass for misunderstanding that Hindu philosophy is only to do with Gods the very concept of a prayer to inner self is a Hindu concept..did u miss when he says prayer should nt be offensive to any other religion?? Do u think Yoga & Hinduism are ot related to each other?? Ur ignorant if u do coz u westerners are hell bent on stealing everything that sgood from Hinduism & claiming it as urs…go get ur own ideas from ur bible..yoga is mentioned in all Hindu scriptures unlike in bible
All great however tip 10 was divine and perhaps the least practiced to that extent for that reason! Love it

love how they’re ribbing each other a little bit. lets you know that they are good natured and that they have a strong connection, which is one of the biggest benefits of yoga in my opinionit gives you the ability to connect with people more deeply when you are at peace yourself! This is something I look for in a teacher and lets me know I can trust their advice
Thank you for making such clear videos on anatomy. You are a life saver for new yoga teachers.
great video. Thank you for sharing. Where can I find Part 1?

Thank you from an PT and new ♂️ I found this a clear refresher
I have watched this video for 15 days straight, doing every morning before having breakfast, and it has been changing my life! Thank you very much
Peace and love ❤
Lovely Laura ………. I wish someone can translate this video exactly same to same into Hindi language too
Did u miss that he said it’s a prayer to yourself?..A prayer to your inner guru is what he said. He never said to any god from the Hindu religion.
Laruga inspires me to do this practice every morning with the same presence, focus and intensity she has in this video. I am putting more effort in when I follow this video than with any other teacher. Having practiced yoga for many years, just coming back to the fundamentals is helping me refine my practice
Great tips!
I’m tiring as I bring my feet back through to lift my head, and then getting my legs round into Crow with sweaty arms is where I come unstuck.
That seesaw may be the trick as well as slipping the shoulders in early as you did.
This is do hard! Watching this makes me feel overwhelmed for all the perfection I possibly won’t reach
Thank you so much for sharing! Just had my first Ashtanga today, and this video helped a lot! The more I learned about the poses! Much appreciated! Namaste!!!!
Thank you for helping us to overcome these days being locked in our homes☺️
The audio quality in pretty good. Don’t mind the usual critics that can help but find mistakes where there are none. GOOD WORK!!!
Right on! Thanks, I like this. i highly recommend you broadcast a lot more like this
all that shallow breathing would have me passing out. why are we not expanding the belly to fill our lungs completely???
once we have the feet up, you did not say what to do next to be able to cross the ankles. Ok no bending forward but what are we supposed to do then to cross the ankles. thank you for your video.
Thanks, Your tips were very useful, especially the starting portion.

Woooow!!! She moves so beautifully precisely n strooongly!!!!!
I am drawn to non Indian yogis who pronounce the Sanskrat words and names of asana correctly without messing with a single syllable. Just like this yogi. It somehow makes me feel they cared enough to learn it in its purest form and have a context of the asanas. She is incredibly graceful.
Thank you for the video i am thinking about going to teacher training this was helpful.
I am thankful I made space to find a Yoga video on YouTube where I could see myself represented by the Teacher. This is my first Ashtanga flow. It is just what my Spirit needed. Thank you Laruga. How do we find more of her work?
yes I agree cant even believe it. you can make your workout sessions much more productive if your eating the right foods to avoid fat and belly. Between My senior in gym daily having this secret food items to kill his belly with less excercise. you can see it here >> bit.ly/117quQ8?=ginzq
That’s so funny because I do actually always listen to heavy metal on my way to my classes and sometimes during my home practise. Slayer or Morbid Angel usually.
Hi! I do yoga and have started doing Ashtanga. How should I properly prepare my body for the sequences? What can you recommend?
Thanks. This is very cleat, but I badly get my shoulders behind my knees. Is this just skeletal structure?
That was the smoothest, quickest jump I’ve ever seen I was like hold up a minute let me get there but overall, this was an Amazing video❤️❤️❤️
It’s not Mysore, Actual spelling is Mysuru,
I’m from Mysuru, Karnataka (India)
I am grateful for the vid. Youtube is fantastic for this type of info.
My buddy used to be bullied. He stated he was about to get bigger. I chuckled at him. I didn’t believe him…. Then before long he packed on 40 pounds of pure muscle. He made use of the Muscle Building Bible Google it. No person dares to bully him now.:-)
I actually subscribed a few days ago. See what will happen. And this guys emails are great!!!
Thank you discovered your channel todayI found this video very helpful. Subscribed.

Hey everyone, the best success that ive ever had was with the Anatomy Blueprint Pro (i found it on google) without a doubt the most useful course that I’ve followed.
Your explanations are crystal clear and reflect your knowledge, pity the board was not straight and bigger, and moving along in the video step by step (would have been visually easier). But you are very pedagogic in the way you describe and explain, and I have learned some things and refreshed some knowledge, so THANK YOU so much.
