Though they are designed for off-road runs, trail shoes are generally safe to wear when running on a road or pavement as well. There may be times when your road shoes may be a better choice, but your trail shoes are likely versatile enough for various road conditions.Sure. You could wear your road running shoes on your trail runs.
And the influx of hybrid shoes —made to crossover between pavement and dirt—are a.Mar 7, 2018. Whether pounding the pavement training for a marathon, jogging in the neighborhood, or walking around town, these are the best shoes for road running. Sure, you could get away with wearing normal sneakers on the trail, but having a pair of trail-specific.
Try to avoid trail running shoes when running on manmade surfaces, like concrete or asphalt. The abrasive pavement can wear down the rubber lugs on the shoe’s outsole, which can compromise your grip when you switch back to off-roading. Key Differences Between Trail Running Shoes and Road Running Shoes.Yes, you can, but the harder soles may not be so gentle on your feet and legs when running on tough surfaces like asphalt. I have been using my Kinvara trail shoes for every run, and they are ok, but I do prefer the non trail version for running on asphalt.
Another aspect: while yes you can run in trail shoes on roads, doing so will probably wear them out faster than if you were running in shoes designed for running on pavement. The reason is that trail shoes have soles that tend to be softer and have more ‘grip’. This helps them give a.Because of the softer rubber, wearing trail-running shoes on the road, where they will regularly pound and rub on hard pavement, can wear the soles out more quickly than if you stick to the softer surface of a trail. Road-running shoes have flatter, less-knobby soles to create a stable, consistent surface for running on paved roads.
I used trail running shoes on concrete, and the softer, grippier tread wore clean off long, long before the cushioning even had a chance at causing me serious problems. In my experience, it would be smarter to keep the regular road shoes for now and save up for the trail shoes, instead of buying new trail shoes twice as often.Running shoes designed for pavement are made to handle repeated movement on a relatively even but hard surface. As such, look for shoes with a little extra padding in them.
The best shoes for running on pavement have mid-level or maximum-level stability and are a little sturdier than other shoes. When you have identified the type of surface you expect most of your running will take place on, you can begin considering the types of features you will need from your shoes. Most trail shoes feature added cushioning and support, which provides protection to the joints and support to the ankles, especially on uneven surfaces.Yes, as long as your trail-running shoes don’t have metal ice studs you can wear them anywhere. Like road-running shoes, you have a lot of options when choosing your trail-running shoes.
If you think you’ll be using your trail runners on the treadmill or road, opt for a lighter pair that boasts flexibility and a responsive design. If it’s a paved nature trail, even a pair of city sneakers can handle it. If you expect to hike in cold, wet conditions, you might prefer the warmth and protection of a sturdy boot with a waterproof membrane, but you can find waterproof trail-running shoes as well. What’s your body type?BUT I will wear trail shoes all winter long, even on pavement, because the traction on snow is so much better.2.
Weather is a huge decision maker – I would never run in the mud in road shoes. And if I am feeling fatigued I stick to my trail shoes because of the inevitable root/rock kicking.3. N/A4.You can wear these hiking boots on pavement, but they really are optimized for more rugged conditions than city sidewalks.Any specialized running shoes are going to be a little costly so hesitating before using them on a new surface is understandable.
If you’re still unsure whether trail running shoes will work on a treadmill, there is a simple way to be convinced. Try it out for yourself.

DMT is unnatural, that junk u put in ur gut to try and bulk up is unnatural, that ridiculous human cockfighting is unnatural, that ink all over u is unnatural
We are not equipped with thick padding under our feet, true. We are instead equipped with a high intelligence to be capable of inventing our own ways to survive longer.
Most things people do is unnatural as from the moment we started to think all we do is geoengineering our environment. We just build new and mor sophisticsted tools to cross our limits. Political correctness is also not natural and no one is doing anything about it.
Just wondering if water will not come in from the top if you run through a field…
Can’t believe this video didn’t get the views it deserves. For all the corporate campaigns targeted to selling a particular product, this video gives the most practical advice. Approaching running with an awareness of what you are putting your physiology through is the best advice you can get, for a new/non-pro runner/athlete. Thank you!
Vaccines being unnatural is weird statement. A vaccine is an inoculation of a dead or weakened version of the pathogen that trains your secondary immune system to recognize the threat. It’s the same as just getting the virus and fighting it off successfully which is fairly natural. The only thing unnatural about vaccines is your access to them. There is also the fact that most things vaccinated against didn’t exist 15 thousand years ago. Diseases have jumped over to infecting us and our livestock in mass quantities as we’ve become the dominant species on the planet. So the need for vaccines in our evolutionary past would have been pretty slim.
He’s right. Wear the shoes you were born with, grown your own, or catch them in the wild. If you can’t be bothered to do any of that, go barefoot.
The last thing to worry about for the normal person is feet. Its knees and back. U know what else is unnatural? Headphones:D
The book “Born To Run” is awesome. Every running enthusiast should read it.
I’m an n=1 but I feel like my knees tend to hurt after a treadmill run, which I dont typically notice when I run outside. Anyone else feel this?
They are tools to improve performance like anything else humans use. Modern medicine is unnatural..but it doesn’t mean you shouldn’t use it
Humans weren’t meant to cook their food. But it was the best thing we ever did in terms of helping our brains develop.
Thanks for the explanation of the differences. Have wondered about that. Well done video.
There are some trails that no matter what shoes you wear you HAVE TO look where you step or you will die.
There is a professor of anthropology by the name of daniel lieberman who I think has many interesting things to say about running, look him up on youtubeif you are someone interested in running…
Comveres original no new stuff the original simple high top black and white are good they got no cushion
Are CrossFit shoes good for running? Something like the Nike Metcon?
I think what Joe means is that running shoes are shaped in an unnatural way that damages your feet and ankles, where as the barefoot type shoes don’t. Flat shoes without cushions is more like being actually natural living but without getting rid of shoes
Jeez, rogan is dumb fuck all the sudden, run bare foot if “natural” is important to you))) wtf?
I mean shoes in general are “unnatural” kind of a stupid title
well shoes are weird AND HEY SHOE MAKERS MY FEET ARE NOT CURVED!!!!!WHY ARE YOUR SHOES CURVED!!!!!THATS WHY I RUN ON DIRT ROADS WITH JUST SOCKS AND MOST TIMES BAREFOOT ALSO YES ROGAN THOSE finger shoes are good too shoe makers I wonder what type of feet they test or measure to make their shoes also theirs Mexican Native that Run with Sandels pretty badass
If the sole on trail shoes is “stickier” for better grip as the young lady states, then surely the sole will attract grit, dust and debris and straight away lose render its stickiness useless. I could be wrong but I don’t think formula 1 type grip is really applicable here except as sales bull shit
i used to use trekking shoes for running and recently switched to running shoe and my knee hurts, i think we should use what we have been using for long time our patterns are formed for that.
Running barefoot in the beginning makes a lot of sense. then for the marathon you put shoes to get the experience of comfort and see what your endurance can do…
great point joe, now I run barefoot on asphalt and my feet are scorched and my knees are shattered BUT AT LEAST I’M NATURAL
Zola Budd was a South African Olympic marathon runner in the 80’s who always ran barefoot
One of our evolutionary traits is our intelligence, not using something our intelligence created is so dumb. Plus running bare foot on concrete is not a good idea
Good video, says it like it is. Takes out all the fad and hype so many runners go through and gets to the point.
I enjoy Joe’s podcast but he sure does say some dumb ass shit!!!! Why question everything? If a fucking shoe feels good to run in then just fucking run in it!!!
Yes! I am glad someone said it. I like shoes but nearly every shoe today has a giant thick sole and it feels like wearing high heels while walking on a matress
Great information and spot on. This guy has his finger on the pulse of running
just curious, do people really unironically watch joe’s podcast?
Winner of Rome 1960 Olympic Marathon Abebe No Shoes Bikila

“Mix them up”
But the only thing that really mixes up things is a trail.
From my personal experience, at 51 years old, trail running doesn’t bother my knees or lower back anywhere near what street running does. I like lifting weights also, deadlifts, squats, and such, and if I were to do street running there is no way my body could also do these other exercises. But I can if I just do trail running, and/or something like mountain biking.
I have a feeling Joe is headed for a fall..just something about him that doesn’t ring true
I love my Vibrams. On the street they’re great! For real. On the trails tho.. ouch.
Wouldn’t say using our intelligence to invent is unnatural:o
Visited the western cape a few months ago, didn’t get to run though, but did hike up lions head. I want to spend more time in die kaap, and running there seems way fun.
I’m confused about running shoes is it better to just run in any casual shoe or do running shoes make a difference?, Some say cushion is good, some say having no cushion and minimal is the best, idk I rolled my ankle with to much arch and cushion before and running with minimal feet hurt if you hit a rock or rut. I like to run on different surfaces, grass, concrete, dirt trails, gravel roads and trails
People who wear the shoes with toes gimme the same energy as people who wear transition glasses
Padded mats in jiu jitsu are unnatural. Real men spar on top of rocks and twigs.
Barefoot running is in the area of 10% less efficient.. if you aint trying to make the national team, go a head and run in what ever or in Nothing..
Neither are condoms but I don’t want 50 billion humans on gods green earth.
I’m not sure where he got this idea. We 100% are designed to walk with a heel strike. The entire point of the plantar fascia (the connective tissue that is inflamed when someone has plantar fascitis) is designed for a biomechanical principle called the windlass mechanism. Essentially when you put your heel down aka heel strike which is the first stage of normal gait and then roll over into foot flat you are loading up energy that gives a springing effect when you lift your heel off the ground. This is absolutely how we are designed to walk in a bipedal position.
I love Rogan but this is one of those things he has gotten into his head from some pseudoscience BS and says frequently. Look at any biomechanics or Anatomy and Phys book or speak to any expert in gait analysis and they will tell you the same.
joe in one podcast: “humans were meant to innovate and make things easier for ourselves. It’s our own evolution”
Joe in this podcast: “it’s unnatural, if we needed it we would have evolved with it”
The best shoes i have ever worn, they stopped making them. They were skechers, which is funny because usually i think skechers are crappy. They were slip-ons, very light breathable, flexible, and the insole was comfy but also firm, not memory foam. They are called the skechers “on the go” and i dont remember which exact variation they were.
I have bought 5 pair of Altras since buying my first pair in February.
Between the extra room for your toes and the zero drop heel they’re the best in my opinion.
You know what else is unnatural? Using a electronic device to comment on YouTube videos 😉
I don’t agree. I spent 23 years in the US Army wearing all types of footwear. NOTHING beats a GORE-TEX shoe or boot . You mention water getting your shoe and getting trapped inside? How much water do you get inside your footwear lol ?! In all my years of outdoor travels I’ve NEVER had so much water in my footwear that couldn’t turn into vapor and escape through the GORE-TEX membrane. If you have pools of water inside your footwear that can’t escape through a GORE-TEX membrane I’m wondering if your footwear is fitted correctly… seriously.
But… sub-2 hour marathon was ran in those Nike Vaporfly’s…! Yeah I’ll stick to shoes!!!
Man I’m 60 and not fat about to start running again but too old for this shit.
I use asics gel cumulus gt-x as my running shoes but I use asics effort LD spikes for races on soft trails.
what the fuck am I even watching. What shit discussion is this and why has it so many views? I dont’ know who this jim rogen, but I already had enough.
I like to wear sandals. But i wear the strap sandals. Those ones with the thing in between the two toes looks not great.
The dude looks dirty as fuck like he hasn’t bathed in years.
I have ultraboost that I use for my runs, not assed about shit me as long as they’re comfy ini. No point in wearing shoes with no sole and arnt comfy, mayaswell wear doc martens or just go barefoot aha
Tarahumaras in Mexico are famous for running long distances in the mountains between one village and the other while wearing footwear called huaraches that are basically sandals made of leather.
You know what else is unnatural, almost every person on Instagram
for someone who claims to be so open minded and intelligent joe sure does say stupid shit a lot
A lot of guys are missing the point here. It isn’t that shoes are bad. Shoes are good they protect our feet. But they should be shaped in a way that complements the foot not in a way that cushions it and makes it run differently.
You know what else is unnatural? Prescription glasses, I will still use them, can’t see shit without it.
Information is provided practical: thank you. One question I swear i have been doing trail running but suddenly one question arises Is any speed expected while doing the trail because I love variation of speed in my trail and mostly you have to follow what fits you on the moment. Glad to hear community comments back
7:33 Well that’s disturbing, I think i’ll stick to running shoes.
When you run barefoot it teaches you how to run. You won’t land heel first because it hurts. If I run barefoot I feel like I’m sneaking up on someone, because in both circumstances you’re minimising the impact. I’m not a runner but I went out barefoot once and had sore calves within 5 -10 minutes. With barefoot running your calf muscle works like suspension to absorb the impact instead of the knees and heels. Landing heel first is retarded because it’s out in front acting like a brake. Even though I got sore calves straight away it was just evidence of a lack of proper running in my life. Calf muscles will strengthen and adapt better than hammering your knees from landing heel first.
Suckers, some of my nerves were cut from a stunt I did. So I can’t feel part of my right foot when I step on sharp things..
Joe “good sized knobs so you can have some good uh, some good tread” rogan
Literally everything on this earth is inherently not good for you. If ya don’t want a blown acl or broken/sprained ankle at some point in your life you should prolly try to just sit down forever. Have fun developing diabetes tho.
Minimalist is definitely the best. Just check out every track Runners WR setting footwear. The issue with USA hobbyist is Most people aren’t patient enough to learn the form. You all spoke on strength but that comes best from knowing form. For best form watch David Rudisha 800m WR
Makes us think why us regular runners have thought about triathlons training or the ironman (variety) and in the other direction of staying as a distance runner and moving to ultra…. but being flexible and running, swimming core and on the bike….. I think happens naturally get an injury as a runner, and you return to the bike, gym or pool….
So many ppl here totally missunderstand the whole point of barefoot/minimalist running. The point is that your fat shoes train you to run unnaturally against the way your body is engineered. And barefoot running with the right technique is still better for your knews than heel running with the next gen cyberpunk 2077 super cushioned nike running shoes…
Just remember that Raramuri people run in fucking sandals for like 200 km. They ofter kick a ball and drink corn beer-like stuff. Now this is bad ass.
Good video. I loathe trail running because of the rough uneven terrain. But I understand that variety is important.
The iron knee you’ll get put in you with minimalist shoes isn’t natural either.
lol I like a natural feel thats why my shoes has a carbon fibre plate which is as unnatural as it gets
I use to compete competitively when I was younger, now I just run for fitness. I would take a hiatus over the winter time (I live in the northeast) simple because I don’t like running in snow. I’ve noticed that when I do start to run again (spring), my recovery time is less when I run in minimalist shoes (I use the Vibram Five Fingers shoe). I think we all agree that running on concrete is not natural but I believe in the minimalist running shoes.
