So I’ve been meditating consistently every day for the past year. I believe I started my journey with guided meditation using the app “Headspace” on January 26th of 2018.
Ever since that day, my life has truly never been the same. The ways I perceive thoughts, emotions, and the environment around me are all radically different. More than that however, I’ve reached what feels like existential peace with myself and the world around me.
I could go on and on for many more paragraphs about how meditation has improved my life, but I’ll cut to the chase.
A week ago, I did my first hour long meditation session. I had been regularly meditating for over an hour a day at this point, but generally spaced it into multiple 20-30 minute sessions.
That day was one I’ll never forget. I began the hour of meditation around 6 A.M in the morning, after getting ready and eating breakfast.
The hour was a somewhat challenging time. My mind raced a lot in the beginning, but gradually drifted into a state of deep mindfulness. Towards the end of the exercise my mind felt rather empty as I continuously counted my breaths. When my timer went off, I was somewhat shocked. It had not felt like I sat for an hour in silence, but indeed it had been.
The rest of the day was one of the best days I’ve had in a long time. I was at peace with anything that came in and out of my awareness to an incredible extent. My anxiety came close to nonexistent. I was so content with myself and the world around me, and to think it was just another typical day with school and work.
I’ve started my days like that ever since, and I have absolutely no regrets. The time put in is so worth the consequential benefits.
My mind gains more clarity and peace as the days of practice go on; I don’t think I ever want to quit this habit at this point. My mind is infinitely stronger than how it was a little over a year ago. I can only imagine how I will be in another year, five years, or even 10.
Pursue the habits that improve you and the interests that sustain you, and leave everything else behind.
