My thoughts are summarized below. I think the time to act is now. I have no experience coordinating such efforts. And would be interested to hear others thoughts. I will be unavailable for the next several hours while we continue to prepare my hospitals response.
The current spread of COVID within the United States is extremely concerning to say the least. More concerning is the lack of a centrally coordinated effort to provide necessary supplies to both diagnose patients and protect health care workers. A lack of proper protection for health care workers has two results. One will cause us to adjust our practices in a way that may alter patient survival. The other results in reckless reuse of PPE that will increase health care worker risk and deplete our workforce.
I am proposing that this community consider a grass roots medicine organization to collaborate with industries which utilize the protective equipment we need. Non essential biotech, construction and aesbestos abatement etc. I would be open to hearing other industries that use similar equipment. This needs to be a movement at the National or state level, but we can’t wait for leadership to do the right thing. They have not yet.
We need to prepare to protect ourselves so that we can effective help others. This is the way.
