Since Lockdown began,I have started a physical training regime which includes a daily walk of 10k steps, which has been a revelation…it has turned me into something of an urban explorer, and has gotten me walking around neighbourhoods and parks away from my local area that I would never have any reason to visit otherwise…the mental, not to mention physical benefits of walking have been an eye opener…
in my country japan, taking 10000 steps walk a day has been recommended to reduce the cost of health care since long time ago, probably since 1970’s or early 80’s.
it normally takes 1 hour and 10 to 30 minutes for most people.
10000 steps walk can burn about 350kcal.
Walk my 2 greyhounds an hour a day good for me, good for my dogs!
“Burning calories” does not equate to fat loss. Hence why walking is superior. Fat loss is hormonal hence why its important to do aerobic exercise when seeking fat loss. I also disagree, I hike on average 10 miles per day 5 days per week with a weighted pack. My entire body has toned up and I have drastically lost fat.
I guess when you weigh it up, it could be said that walking is beneficial.
Keep up the good work.
There was this 85 year old Chinese man with his family who travelled with us as part of a coach tour of Scandinavia
The coach tour being full of family friends who were mostly retired doctors, marvelled at his appearance and state of health
After some quizzing, he finally gave us his secret:
Two walks a day morning and afternoon/evening
And a bag of mysterious Chinese herbs
What a man you are Teach as simple as a common man can learn.
Walk and talk to the trees the are vary good at listening. Do it all the time and from time to time even the bird’s. But how to get rid of belly fat fast. I do cold baths ansmd fasting its hard
Walking. There is benefits clearly. But the value is tiny. Or a small part of a total program/approach. Has to be a “proper diet” and there needs to be some vigorous exercise. Using weights would help greatly. Even if not trying to be the next Olympic Weightlifter, Powerlifting champion…..etc. Still benefits one more than ONLY walking. And the walking would need to be at a brisk pace…on uneven ground, up and down steep hills…etc.it’s “better than doing nothing at all” but has to be a part of a larger plan of attack for better fitness/health.
this is my job 5-6 days a week as a postman, 10-12 mls a day carrying heavy mail bags between 4-6 hrs in all weathers and high rise flats and some days i feel like crap!! maybe theres a thing called doing to much?
I have lost 50lbs by just going on to my threadmill for 2 years. Check my story
Does it have to be brisk walking though? Or even alternating with regular walking and then quickening up
I’m impressed the way you present this useful information Dr. I just start my morning walk since past two days without much intention but to lose weight. However, your vedio helps me to stick with my practice into my habit. Thanks for that.
Thank You Dr., I used to do alot of walking when I was Younger, but I need to start walking again.!
I’m 53 and walked for at least 35 years. Sometimes a few miles sometimes up to 40. The benifit of walking clears my head, slows down the pace of life. I don’t plug in music just look around and listen to what’s around. When running you can miss stuff. After a reasonably good walk I come home calm and relaxed.
There’s no gym at the moment due to corona virus so I walk around my neighbourhood or to local nature spots. It helps everything.
Great vid! Doing a hard 2 day dry fast and walking is a great pass time activity with so much health benifits.
Hello! And respect. From my experience is this. I have been walking no 30 min but 2-3 hours a day and it doesn’t need to be intense or sweat a lot in order to lose weight. You just walk as fast as you can without hurting yourself. I can guarantee you gonna lose 1 Kilo or more in 3 hours of walking depending on your age and careful what you eat and how much control and weigh everything that enters your body.. Kind regards
I’m 63 and used to walk 2 miles a day and did jazzercise for years. l fell off the wagon big time. And l sit all day working from home. I have to start walking again. My muscles are so tight from sitting
Started walking every evening about 3.2 miles a year ago. This didn’t effect my 145/80 blood pressure at all. Also didn’t lose any weight and SI joint arthritis is as bad as ever. Walking may be beneficial, but this video overplays the benefits
I walk a minimum of 5 miles a day just because I need to… today I walked around 25 miles and I dont feel any benefit, im a mess all arojnd. just wondering what state I would be in if I didn’t walk
If walking worked, why does my mailman look like Jabba the Hutt?
Walking outside is the only thing that helps white blood cells, you can have the healthiest diet, but if you don’t walk outside, your immune system will be screwed,NOTHING helps white blood cells except being outside with FAST walking
I walk 2.5mile once a day and it takes 1hr. My 2 small chihuahuas and I all enjoy our walk together.
I walk after breakfast in the morning and do house chores for about 3 hours. Then after lunch I walk for about 20 to 30 mins. And after and hour I go to my computer institute by walking. In the evening I walk for about 30 mins or 40 mins. And after dinner I walk for about 2 hours. Btw I’m 18 years old and I’m 5’1 tall and I weight about 37kgs or 38kgs. I eat about 800-950 calories a day.
If I do indoor walking like low impact power walk exercise it would be the same as normal outdoor walking?
Get a weighted vest and walk its all you will ever need to stay fit
hey doc. is it too much to run 3 miles daily on treadmill incline level 8? appreciate ur expertise. thanks doc.!
I walk to and from work,2 times 40 minutes, relaxed when i arrive there, and stress from work gone when i get home,if i don’t work i take walks from more than a hour, but 30 minutes walks are great also.
I walk 5-6 miles a day and have done so for years. I also swim in the summertime.
Professor Dr. Mungli, Thank you for this wonderful video. I am more than sure that this video will save many people from the disease of bad life style. In this modern time of enormous technological development many many flowers are dropping down even before they bloom properly. It is only because of physical inactivity. Your video will encourage many people to start brisk walking and to have healthy lives.
I walk at least 10.000 steps a day and most of the time 15000 I do one big session or 2 smaller. At least 45 min a day:) everytime I feel so good after and ready to boost myself and do other staff!

Walking is the easiest way to get in shape and stay in shape. As we age, it does our body good to slow down… think “tortoise and the hare”! Slow and steady wins the race. While all the Bootcamp, weightlifters, and high-intensity workout enthusiasts are burned or worse, hurt, you will be walking on! Frank
I started walking daily on a treadmill 2 weeks ago.
I am 69 yr old female struggling with nerve pain in my legs and hips.
I am doing 10 min./2% incline/2 mph right now.
I hope to be able to increase to 10 min. twice a day soon…. then maybe to three times a day.
I don’t tolerate long periods on the treadmill….I get bored.
10 min. at a time works for me.
I believe 10 min. is better than no minutes a day.
Walking on the treadmill I can hold on for balance.
I love to walk outside but in our city the sidewalks are not in good repair and many older adults have nasty falls.
The same with walking a wooded trail.
I am trying to be proactive and creative to get some good exercise and strengthening.
Cut long story short. I left my flat 8am returned 4pm why, to avoid my land lady who was a right bitch.Walking, Tell me about it.
After two years of continuous walking I sat in my local park, one afternoon, I COULDN’T MOVE! Rang 999 spent the night in hospital tendons
On my feet were so painful I couldn’t move. I have had planter firsiitus before….I LOVE WALKING!!
I wonder if those walks were outside increasing vitamin D, thus Lowery sick days
What the deferent between outdoor or indoor I walk on my treadmill 1 hour or more everyday..thank you Dr..❤️❤️
I’m 44 years old I walk about 5 to 10 miles every day when it’s raining or snowing I use my Sole E35 for 99.99 minutes about 6 to 8 miles on that
It certainly does create muscle, i started doing 10k walks every other day and my legs have more muscle than ever before, also my back, neck and arms are a lot stronger. I agree with everything else he says, the mental health benefits are true but it takes a few weeks before you get the full benefit and sense of achievement.
swimming is the best! rather run or be swimm8ng but walk is good as a rest day exercise
Thank you very much for sharing the benefits of walking
It was very informative
Awesome!!!!! I use to feel like I had to jog or run in order to get a good workout but I came to realize walking is a great exercise and sense I am older and gained some weight, it’s better on my joints. I try for 10000 steps a day on my fitbit. Cycling is another alternative for me too. Thanks for the info.
Im a 29 y/o guy with social anxiety and gets depressed easily. Walking has been helping my mood and become happy 😉
Getting up and out causes me anxiety! Still haven’t found anything calming to take, that works, or doesn’t make me sleepy.
One of the many virtues of owning a dog (particularly a breed that requires daily exercise) is that it will force you out of the house to walk, even in lousy weather. Unless it rains all day, I walk my dog at least a half hour to 45 minutes every day, at a minimum. For much of the year, we also do hikes of 3 to 10 miles two or three times a week.
Can’t overestimate not can’t underestimate. Anyone can underestimate.
Get a dog!
Mine reminds and encourages me to walk 30 mins + twice a day. You will find you have more and friendlier interactions with strangers, less stress, more appreciation of your environment. Low cost, no negative side effects,.. doctors should be prescribing them!
Today is my 6th day walking 30 minutes a day. I’ve been infertile for 2 1/2 years. I’m really praying that adding exercise will help.
Absolutely love walking. My wife and family thinks I crazy but most of the time I walk from and to work. It is only a 1 mile walk. Most days I walk 10,000 steps.
Great video. Walking helps control my BP and arthritis. I’m 64 and walk 4 to 5 miles a day (1-1/2 hrs/day). It’s also a great time to reflect, pray, meditate, Etc.
I’d like to know more about how different levels, such as speed, duration, and frequency of waking affect health.
Dr make suspence..i red all ur headings and understand it in less then a minute. Thank u
Walking is active recreation,20 years of walking, wore out my joints.!
I have multiple lumbar spinal surgeries over 5 yrs ago and pain was unbearable. Now I’m started to walk daily if possible 30 mins to help ease the pain and gives me strength!
I walk 3 hours minimum in my work day and I’m not fit? I have a belly I feel tired as well. Not convinced walking is improving my health notably.
Quicl question please. When walking do u walk super fast or just normal pace? Grateful if you or anyone could help me with this!! TIA Nicola xx
I walk around 35-40 miles each week (I’m 32). I started walking very short distances when I was very obese to get into moving again. I increased the distances slowly, but it really helped. Now, 2 years later and 66 pounds lighter, I can’t live without my (long) daily walks anymore.
Doc can you also talk about benefit of swimming coz I love swimming
i am addicted to walking…i am 65 and have been exerising all my life,,i feel sluggish if i go 2-3 days without exerising…

I’m 71 and I make it a point to walk 3 miles a day, sometimes I really don’t want to because I have a bad back due to a very bad traffic accident when a guy ran a light and T-bone my car. I can see this has helped with my blood pressure. I have recently added a 20 minutes cardio exercises a few days a week. I guess it won’t hurt
I’m happy for everyone on this channel. never give up on your gold
Probably just an artifact of the fact that faster walking requires an increase in situational processing…people who walk fast force a higher level of brain activity. You are more likely to trip on or bump into something if you don’t step up mental reaction time when walking fast. People who prefer a slower pace may simply be uncomfortable with the higher level of inputs from the flux of stimuli at a higher pace.
Some days you tell yourself “I don’t feel like walking today”. Unless you are hurt or sick that is the best time to walk. You will thank yourself for it. I am one of those who can’t see the logic in using a treadmill. If you are going to walk then walk. Doing it out doors you have the added benefit of fresh air and sunshine. If the weather is bad an indoor track is still better than a treadmill. Take along some music to battle the boredom and monotony. Happy walking and happy health.
Hello Dr. Mungli,
I am still watching your videos and referring them to the new friends I’ve made at my new school. They have helped me so much and I know you would be proud of my progress. Thank you for being the best professor ever!!!
Excellent video! I’m a proponent of bodyweight exercises and walking. The more we move our bodies, the healthier we are. Average walking speed studies show that an older person’s pace, along with their age and gender, can predict their life expectancy just as well as the complex battery of other health indicators such as blood pressure, body mass index, chronic conditions, and smoking history.
Benefits of my heel and toe walking Regime
For some time now my feet have been killing me, I did a lot of limping, I tried insoles and other stuff, no good at all, I went on line seeking help, one web site suggested what they call heel and toe walking, striking the floor with your heel, rolling the feet and taking off on your toes, I took it seriously, I think I must have been walking flat footed, here are the amazing things that happened.
Wonderful, life changing!
Balance.
Correct walking affects the muscles in the feet, the legs and beyond.
I don’t limp anymore the reason I started this method of walking.
For a short while my thigh muscles ached, that is good.
I can now wear shoes I was reluctant to wear because they hurt my feet.
I am not at all unsteady when I walk now.
Walking on cobbled streets in my home town I always avoided because I felt unsteady walking on them, not anymore I make a point of walking on them now.
Steps I avoided because I felt unsteady walking up and down them, much better.
I feel a lot more confident.
Here is the BIG one
The Pelvic Floor Muscle.
I had prostate cancer some years ago and had to have it surgically removed resulting in incontinence, I did the kegal exercises but it was a waste of time so I gave up, I wear pads and change them every day sometimes twice a day, after doing my new walking regime after not very long I noticed one night when I took one off it was dry, never happened before, now they are either dry or not very wet, also every morning about six I need to pee, I had to grab my willy to stop myself peeing on the floor on my way to the toilet, not anymore, if I was caught short often I would wet myself as I undid my pants, not anymore, I wore my pads for three days with hardly any leakage!
One problem was drinking beer, bitter/real ale, if I tried a pint it was as if my body was a drain pipe, I quickly wet my pants, it’s a diuretic, Guinness and wine were OK, after the improvements with the pad I decided to try and drink a pint to see what would happen, I stayed dry, next day I had two pints, I stayed dry!
As I said wonderful and life changing.
Not bad for a man who is 79 years old!
I am 67; I walk everyday but my knees are hurting. What shall I do to relieve the pain and the aching? Thanks
Interesting, correlation but not causation, except in the view that health causes fast walking speed and not the other way around.
