After a day or two of indulging in high dopamine activities, and kind of burning myself out, I totally feel like i’m a worthless piece of shit by the end of it and it’s a pretty terrible feeling. Now think back to those moments where you spent 6+ hours cleaning your place up, or staying super focused and working for quite a while. When the end of the day comes in and you are able to sit down and play stuff or listen to some music, that particular activity feels just so much better.

I’ve thought of this concept before, the notion of even tricking your brain to like things that reward more in the long term. To derive dopamine in high amounts from working hard. Indulgence in the long term is the best pleasure, but it’s so gruelling and short term indulgence is the devil that ruins and triumphs over most people, such as myself. I was too busy procrastinating to actually look into how to do that though, which I should’ve. But better late than never. I didn’t know it was called a dopamine detox. I actually did this radical first step recently, kind of by accident. Basically I had a really bad day and instead of going where I was suppose to, I decided to stay alone. The place where I stayed had no electricity, I didn’t bring any books(which is a high dopamine activity for me), I had eaten all of my lunch and so I just spent four hours doing nothing. I just walked around a little, sitted in place for a few minutes, looked at insects, stuff like that. It was weird.

You need a more holistic approach that considers endorphins, gaba, androgens etc. You can permanently alter your neuronal homeostasis. This happens with chronic meth addicts (forever deficient in dopamine receptors). The thing is, this also works the other way, albeit in a slightly different manner. Take Naltrexone for example, an opioid blocking drug that when taken by non-addicts, increases the neurogenesis of opioidal receptors, which works great for improving executive function.

I am an extreme professional in the simultaneous language interpretation field, sometimes driving a car or riding my motorcycle about 2,000 miles a week to get to my assignments.. I work crazy hours every week, and your video made me realize that I was very low on rewards, which is why I was struggling to some degree. You are awesome. We all appreciate you greatly. I disagree with that method, because that is a sign, that specific activities get more of your attention for a reason.
What I mean by this is that you are just fighting the symptom of boring activities instead of making those activities less boring.
An example would be cleaning your working space (I am making this from a subjective viewpoint now):
Cleaning it is boring. Making myself bored to enjoy cleaning it will make the mood even worse.
But if you find some enjoyment-keypoints in cleaning it (like for example making a different layout of the desk in that process and that maybe excites you), it will have a high dopamine output and it can reach the same level of the enjoyment of gaming and you dont have to torture yourself.
Find the joy in specific activities and sometimes there are some, which just arent for you. I have had times I didnt clean my workspace for 1 year, till I find a properly rewarding reason for doing so.
But! It never bothered me how my workspace looked like in that year and I dont see a reason to be bothered about it.

There’s not actual science that proves dopamine detoxing or fasting does anything. Dopamine levels don’t decrease if you avoid stimulating activities so you enjoy less stimulating activity more. Dopamine detoxing and fasting are just silly fads that don’t actually do anything meaningful to the person. It’s just a false way to promote living life in a healthy balance.
